(Academic Skills - Teach Me How To Study) with an emphasis on Academic Skills: Writing Paraphrases and Summaries in “The Writer’s Craft” on pages 341-343. Students will be given direct instruction (audio & visual) on How Do I Put Things in My Own Words? Specifically, student will be taking notes on three main points: Paraphrasing, Summarizing, and Avoiding Plagiarism. How Do I Put Things in My Own Words? Tired of writing things word for word? PAY ATTENTION!!! Here are a few tips to make all that hand cramping go away;) Paraphrasing – when you rewrite a passage or lecture in your own words 1) Make sure it makes sense to you 2) Don’t cut too many corners 3) Find the main idea 4) List supporting details 5) Simplify language so it makes sense to you 6) Revise if necessary Summarizing – when you express the main idea of the passage in your own words, leaving out details 1) Reread passage 2) Rewrite key ideas in simple words 3) Check for accuracy Hands on Activity: Students will participate on page 343’s “Practice Your Skills.” Students will do skill review of Part A during an allotted amount of time. Once students are finished section, students will come back together for a comprehension check led by teacher or Peer Review to help with comprehension. Completed work is ticket out of class…
