tsThis is our first newsletter for 2020. I’ve had several people ask me about the newsletter design and layout so I though I’d introduce the individual who designed out current newsletter and does our layout.

In 2017, the individual who, for years, laid out the newsletter retired. At that time the Board instructed me to find a new company or person to layout the newsletter and made the decision to update the format and design of the current newsletter. After contacting several local firms and getting estimates, all of which were 5-6 times what we were currently paying; I talked to Diana Quinn, the current president, and suggested an individual I knew who would redesign the newsletter and would do the layout and had committed to complete the rest of the year for the same amount we were currently budgeted for. That individual was my son, Jonathan. Diana gave me the go ahead to contact him. Jon put together several concept designs one of which is the current template for our newsletter.

A little about Jon; Jon has always been very artistic. In High School one of this paintings were selected by the High Museum in Atlanta for a special display of High School Student art. After graduating from High School, Jon attended UGA and majored in Scientific Illustration. While there he won a several awards for his drawings. After graduating from UGA, he was accepted into the Medical Art program at Johns Hopkins University. He Graduated in 2006 with a Masters in Medical Art.

Since graduating Jon has specialized in medical animation and art. He is an experienced animator, with more than a decade of medical Illustration and animation experience. He has a thorough knowledge of the human anatomy, and molecular biology, along with a diverse background of traditional art and science. Jon’s work has been featured on the Dr. Oz Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show as well as on the cover of Nature and Nature Nanotechnology. He currently lives in Wethersfield CT with his wife, Traci, and our two grandsons, Theo and Remy. He is a Lead Animator for XVIVO one of the country’s top medical animation studios. Here’s a sample of Jon’s Work:

The diverse range of new 35-series models offering a new entry point to the world of Mercedes-AMG is now complete. This model family extends from the A-Class to the CLA Coupe as well as the GLB, which is optionally available as a seven-seater. This versatile line-up is now rounded out by the new GLA 35, combining high-style and high- performance in a sporty crossover. At the heart of the new GLA 35 is the AMG-enhanced engine: the agile high-torque 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine delivering 302 hp, which is variably distributed to all four wheels via the 8-speed dual- clutch transmission and all-wheel drive. Quick acceleration (0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds), high versatility, high style, and a performance-oriented driving experience are all hallmarks of this dynamic new model.

“With the new GLA 35 we are rounding off our attractive portfolio of compact entry-

level models to the world of Mercedes-AMG,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “Our wide portfolio in this segment therefore has seven models with which we are able to meet wide-ranging customer wishes and are systematically able to transfer our AMG philosophy of Driving Performance to our dynamically growing compact segment. The muscular design, superior performance and thrilling handling make the new GLA 35 a sporty crossover with hallmark AMG genes.”

Characteristic of Mercedes-AMG, characteristically dynamic: the exterior designThe design of the GLA 35 is unmistakably AMG. Up front, the AMG-specific radiator grille immediately emphasizes the model’s clear membership in the AMG family. Other design highlights include the unique silver chrome trim elements in the outer air inlets and the front splitter, also optionally available in high-gloss black. Eye-catching features when viewed from the side include the 19-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, painted in grey with a high-sheen finish (other designs are optionally available in 19, 20 or 21 inches) as well as the door panel inserts in silver

chrome or high-gloss black (optional). When viewed from the rear, the GLA 35 stands out thanks to its striking rear bumper with a new diffuser insert, AMG spoiler lip on the roof spoiler and two round tailpipe trims. The slim, two-section rear lights lend a strong impression of width to the GLA’s rear. With design features in high-gloss black and black chrome-plated exhaust tailpipes, the optional AMG Night package ensures an even more aggressive and unique appearance.

Fully-digital instrument cluster with AMG-specific displaysThe driver can choose between three AMG display styles “Classic”, “Sport” and “Supersport” for the instrument cluster. The “Supersport” mode is particularly striking with a central, round rev counter and additional information presented in the form of bars to the left and right of the rev counter: with a three-dimensional perspective, they reach far into the background to an artificial horizon. Via the AMG menu, the driver can call up various special displays such as Warm-up, Set-up, G-Force and Engine Data. With individual AMG displays such as visualization of the driving modes or telemetry data, the touchscreen multimedia display also underscores the dynamic configuration.

AMG steering wheel with optional steering wheel buttonsThe multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather ensures first-class ergonomics and intuitive operation. The steering wheel rim with a flat bottom, perforated leather in the grip area and red contrasting topstitching is both attractive and pleasant to the touch. The galvanized steering wheel gearshift paddles enable an even sportier driving style with manual shift operations.

The optional AMG Performance steering wheels and accompanying AMG steering wheel buttons are visibly and ergonomically designed for performance. The material is extremely grippy, and like the 12 o’clock marking is reminiscent of motorsport design cues. The steering wheel buttons allow fast and confident operation of specific dynamic functions – for a focused and performance-oriented driving style.

Turbocharged four-cylinder engine developing 302 hpThe 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine has an immediate response to accelerator pedal commands, high torque (295 lb- ft max. torque from 3000 rpm), a supremely lively response and an evocative and dynamic engine note. The crankcase is made

of high-strength, lightweight die-cast aluminum and helps to reduce the overall vehicle weight. A twin-scroll exhaust gas turbocharger combines optimum responsiveness at low engine speeds with a strong power increase at higher speeds.

AMG Performance 4MATIC variable all-wheel driveDynamism, agility and performance – these three attributes characterize the standard all-wheel drive of the new AMG GLA 35. The variable AMG Performance 4MATIC combines the best possible traction with plenty of driving performance. The spectrum ranges from front- wheel drive only to a 50:50 percent distribution to the front and rear axles.

AMG suspension with AMG-specific componentsThe AMG sport suspension is tuned for high cornering speeds and low roll tendencies. This allows the dynamic potential of the GLA 35 to be fully realized. The high reserves at the critical limits ensures sheer driving pleasure while the vehicle remains safe and predictable at all times. A McPherson suspension strut construction is fitted on the front axle.

The optional AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive damping system enables the driver to choose between three different suspension control modes. The spectrum ranges from comfort-focused to sporty.

Robust AMG high-performance braking systemThe AMG high-performance braking system ensures fade-resistant deceleration and short braking distances. The front axle is fitted with 4-piston fixed calipers and 13.8 inch brake discs, the rear axle with 1-piston sliding calipers and 13.0 inch brake discs. The discs are internally ventilated and perforated to better dissipate heat and prevent brake fading, even with extreme use. The silver-painted brake calipers feature black AMG lettering.

AMG exhaust system with exhaust gas flap for sound modulationThe unique AMG exhaust system enhances the performance-oriented yet also suited for everyday character of the new GLA 35. Depending on the choice of driving mode, the sound signature ranges from very sporty and dynamic (Sport+) to discreet (Slippery, Comfort, Sport). The sound characteristics are controlled by an exhaust gas flap, depending on engine speed and load.

Member Spotlight - Chris SmithBy Steve Chapman

When I met Chris Smith, we instantly bonded. Perhaps is was a mutual respect for German horsepower or just the quirkiness of finding a fellow MBCA member who owns and enjoys 550+hp station wagons. Or, it could have just been the spirited drive home from the tour of the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins! I also learned in our youth, we both looked forward to new issues of The Robb Report each month which further fostered a desire for very cool cars.

Chris originally joined MBCA as a member in Virginia/Potomac prior to relocating to the Atlanta area about seven years ago. His extensive background in the automotive industry and passion for the world of automobiles has fueled a wide variety of cars he has owned over the years. His very first car was an MG Midget (in Butterscotch of course), which morphed into another MG, this time a B model.

He has owned nearly 70 cars total including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VW, Audi Jeep and many others. Chris also possesses the capability of modifying, repairing and restoring cars and trucks in his own garage. I asked if he regretted selling any of his previous cars. He didn’t hesitate when he mentioned a previous Porsche 911 turbo with an ultra-rare green color and an E30 M3 - one of his all-time favorites. I imagine Chris will be on the lookout for his next ride soon as he tends to enjoy a car and move on to the next with regular cadence.

While an MBCA member in the Old Dominion state, Chris owned a 190E 2.3-16 (this unique W201 had Cosworth cylinder heads and a manual transmission). The garage companion was a G500, a very special Austrian-built truck, notable for not only the capabilities it possesses but the owners who tend to be passionate enthusiasts. Today, Chris enjoys a G55 AMG (hand-built supercharged V8), producing 500hp and 516lb-ft of torque. This truck makes wonderful noises and is the perfect companion to his 45 hp John Deere tractor that gets extensive use on his property. As seen in these pictures, he is not shy about finding places to enjoy this immensely capable off-roader.

Please look for Chris at an upcoming Peachtree section event!

GarageGary’s

There’s a Puddle Under My Rear Wheel!

By: Gary Edwards, Tech EditorAs I walked by the 450SL the other day, I noticed some wetness on the floor around the right rear wheel. It got bigger and wetter over the next week. It occurred to me that I’ve had this type of thing happen a number of times in the last few years and maybe it’s happened to you too.

There just aren’t that many potential sources for a leak at the right rear wheel. The obvious choice is brake fluid

from a leaking caliper; that’s what it’s been in the 3 of the 5 occasions this has happened to me lately. For some of the more complex cars, there are some other potential sources. Mercedes cars with the Self Leveling System (SLS) use hydraulics to level the car for heavy loads. W124 wagons, the 500E and a few other 124’s (including a member’s cabriolet) have this system, along with a bevy of the other Mercedes. In the other 2 occurrences it was a leaking strut in the SLS system. BUT our SLs and cabriolets with hydraulically operated tops have many more sources for leaks in front or behind the rear wheel – see my previous article on replacing hydraulic cylinders for these cars.

So, what do you do and how do you diagnose? Well, as with any leak investigation, you look closely to see where the fluid is coming from. Often this requires extensive cleaning then follow-up observation as the leak starts again. With the 450SL it involved laying on the concrete under the car looking carefully at the brake caliper (of course 450SL’s don’t have SLS so I didn’t really have another choice). This requires a rebuild or replacement of the brake caliper. It could also be the brake line or the flexible brake hose, but in my experience, these are pretty low probably failures. It’s also helpful to check the brake fluid level, and on appropriate cars, the hydraulic fluid level.

My preference is to rebuild the caliper myself. It’s a lot cheaper than buying a new or rebuilt caliper, you get to learn the condition of the caliper’s piston(s) and cylinder(s) and you know

that cleanliness conditions were maintained. Of course,

a new or rebuilt caliper from a dealer or a reputable supplier will be

fine but I have heard some horror stories about rebuilt calipers and I did an inspection on a

560SL whose rear calipers came from the local auto parts store and something just wasn’t right – car pulled to the left as it was slowing while braking. Plus you do NOT want to install used brake calipers (not without rebuilding them).

Caliper rebuilding is easy. There is a rubber seal ring in the cylinder and a dust boot on the outside. Cleaning takes most of the time, as absolute cleanliness is essential in the reassembly and I’ve found that I can’t maintain the necessary level of cleanliness if the exterior of the caliper is dirty. I normally use compressed air to push the piston out of the caliper, though it’s important to block its exit with a piece of wood to avoid having

the piston flying around the room (like the last one I did!). Safety glasses are a nice addition too! When I did this on the 450SL, I found the other side was also leaking, just not enough to drip onto the concrete – emphasizing that what you do on one side, you should also do on the other. If the brake pads get wetted with brake fluid, it’s a good idea to replace them too (plus you have to remove them to rebuild the caliper anyway).

This is a good time to inspect the rubber brake line hoses that lead to the caliper, since you have to disconnect them and you’ll have to bleed that brakes in any case. If you haven’t done it in the last two years, it’s a good idea to bleed the front brakes as well – your brakes will work better and last longer if brake fluid is regularly changed. Brake fluid absorbs water over time, and the boiling point of the brake fluid goes down with increased water absorption.

If it’s an SLS strut, you’ll need to come up with a replacement and these can be expensive. When I had to do this for my 300TD Turbo, I found many expensive choices when I looked it up under the Mercedes part number. However, I was able to learn the manufacturers part number from the ads and when I looked it up under the manufacturer’s part number I found it at about a third of the cost. The replacement was straightforward after I finally figured out how to remove the interior panel that provided access to the upper bolts (I couldn’t find anything that showed me where all the screws were).

You are much better detecting these problems by finding the puddle than by experiencing the symptoms in motion, especially if it’s the brakes! The last time I ignored one of these I found my brake pedal going mostly to the floor (and the car didn’t stop very well!). Parking the car on a hard surface and paying attention to anything that drips from the car is a great practice.

Progressive Georgia BBQ Rally11:30am March 28, 2020

Event Planners : Ernie Smallman and Patricia Duer

ICold weather is rural North Georgia is hog killing time. This is when the best butts and sides of the hog are selected for going on the smoker. Late March is Mercedes convertible weather on most days. You’ll want the top down so you can smell good BBQ and so you will know where to stop for good “eatin”. After you have planted your garden, change from your coveralls to sporty driving rally attire and join an adventure into southern culture and cuisine.

In the modern era there are realities such as $7.00 cups of coffee, designer clothing for dogs, and spending an inordinate amount of money on services that rarely justify the cost. If you are adventurous and want to get back to the basics of life, then sample “real” Georgia BBQ while driving in parts of Cherokee County

Georgia that you may have never seen before.

We will meet initially at J.D’s BBQ in Acworth, GA located at 4424 South Main Street, Acworth, GA . Owner and pit master Chip Allen has converted the Eli Whitney Schoolhouse in Acworth to a BBQ destination of note. In addition to the massive grill in the rear of the building, Chip recently unveiled his biggest BBQ smoker that will be on display at the Georgia state fair this fall. “Big Bertha”, J.D’s new trailer mounted grill can cook one hundred pork butts and one hundred whole chickens simultaneously. Your appetizer is a helping of J.D.’s spicy collards, mighty good on a spring morning. Those who do not know what collards are, can have Cole Slaw. The rest of us will pretend we don’t know you and that you are driving a BMW.

Next stop after a drive into the middle of Cherokee County is Amos’ Biscuits and BBQ, located at 697 Hightower Road, Ball Ground, GA between Canton and

Gainesville and has a Ball Ground, GA address. Amos sells firewood in addition to BBQ plus ten types of breakfast biscuits. Proud pit master of “fall off the ribs BBQ”, Amos is known for “nothing fancy, just tasty slow cooked fresh food.” Amos’ location will look like home where you were raised. Difference is that “your momma” did not make Brunswick Stew like that of Amos. Sample a heaping cup of stew before cranking your motor and letting your horses run. If you are low on firewood, buy a rick that you can place in your trunk with the lid tied down to hold the load. Patricia is from the Bronx in New York. She could not believe that places like Amos ‘exist!

Third stop is nearby Butts and Barley Smokehouse. Their BBQ is so good that you can smell their butts a mile away. Butts and Barley is only three miles from Amos’ location, so start smelling as soon as your Mercedes begins its journey to Butts and Barley. Here you will have a large Pork BBQ sandwich, your entrée. The barley in the name is for the cold beer sold on site. Other than water, you will pay a la carte for a beverage.

The final leg of your journey will take you to the Hickory Flat area of Cherokee County to Frosty Frog Creamery and Café. You will be served a bowl of delicious ice cream. Your tummy should be full by then as you depart of the metropolitan area where you reside with fond memories of a day in the country. Time will not permit us to include a taste of moonshine and a gospel singing. Please, no banjo playing! Cost is $22 per person.

Locations:• J.D.’s BBQ, 4424 South Main Street, Acworth, GA• Amos’s Biscuits and BBQ, 697 Hightower Road, Ball Ground, GA• Butts and Barley, 11474 Cumming Hwy, Canton, GA • Frosty Frog Creamery and Café, 6205 Hickory Flat Hwy, Canton, GA

Please get off your “butt” and register by March 20th.

Saturday April 18, 2020Event Planner -Dean Prince

If you are a proud owner of an R107/R129 Mercedes, or are considering acquiring one, come to the Peachtree Section Gathering on Saturday April 18, 2020 in Lincolnton, GA.

Building upon a successful R107 gathering in 2019, we are adding the next generation SL, the R129 to this years’ gathering. Our plan is to meet up at the Lincoln County Historical Park, Lincolnton GA where we will admire these great vehicles, have lunch (pizza), socialize and discuss car valuations and technical issues.

The R107 and R129 are the insider's designation for the Mercedes SL sold in the US from 1972 to 2001. At various times the R107 was called the 350SL, 450SL, 380SL and the 560SL. The R129’s were called 300SL, 320SL, 500SL, 600SL, SL320, SL500, SL600 (in the US). R107's and R129’s are generally quite reliable and are great driving machines.

Both of these models are still quite reasonably priced, and we expect an increase in values for nice examples over time. Not yet an owner of an R107/R129? Now may be the time to purchase and this event will be a great time to learn about the cars by talking with owners and viewing many examples. It will be a fun event and anyone with an interest in the R107/R129 should plan to attend!

Mid-April is a great time to get out and enjoy your SL. The drive to Lincolnton from the Atlanta area is about a 2½ hour drive and one can take the interstate or back county roads, put the top down and enjoy Georgia in the spring. For questions, contact Dean Prince at [email protected].

April 24-25, 2020Organizers: Doug Geganto and Cheryl Edwards

We’re heading to Savannah for our annual Spring Fling weekend on the weekend of April 24-26th.

We’ve secured a block of 25 rooms at the Towne Place Suites located at 11309 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA 31419, at a rate of $129 per night. In order to receive the group rate, you must register directly with the hotel at 912-920-9080 before the cutoff date of March 24th. After that date the negotiated room rates will go to $199 per night, so reserve your room early.

Plan to arrive on Friday which will give you an opportunity to make the short drive to historic Fort Pulaski which is just outside the city or to explore the Savannah river front. Dinner on Friday will be on your own. You could also opt to take an evening walk along the River Front or stroll through one of the many squares located in the historic downtown district.

We’re planning a Savannah Experience bus tour of the city on Saturday morning. The tour is $36.00 per person, which includes a tip for the tour guide and driver. Our tour will begin at 9AM at the visitor center and last three hours.

March 5-8, 2020The Amelia Island Concours d’ Elegance is now well established as the premier event of this sort for the Eastern part of North America. Mercedes-Benz was the first and continues as the most prominent sponsor with an awesome pavilion on the show field and a star-studded gala at the Ritz Carlton on Saturday evening. If you have an invitation to the gala, this is your pass to the pavilion. These places have been filled for some time.

MBCA members gather for dinner Friday night and Saturday night as well as at the Saturday morning Cars and Coffee at the concours. If you don’t already have a car entry confirmed for this, forget it. It has been filled for quite some time. MBCA will, however have a tent in the area of the Mercedes-Benz pavilion. You are welcome to see the historic Mercedes-Benz display both Saturday and Sunday. We would also welcome your help with recruiting new members among the visitors to the Mercedes-Benz area. Contact Enthusiast Committee Chair, Josie Lesler [email protected] or National Membership Chair, Doug Geganto [email protected] that you would like to help at tent.

National Director at Large, Jim Roberts and the Alabama/ N.W. Florida Section have arranged traditional Fri & Sat evening dinners for MBCA members and guests.

Friday, 6 March at 6:30pm We will be at the Jacksonville Airport Doubletree Hotel’s banquet facilities. This will feature an extensive buffet. The hotel will collect from you at the door.

Note: This replaces our traditional event in Kingsland, GA, as “The Millhouse” restaurant there has closed. The Jacksonville Airport is about 25 min from Kingsland (i.e. the same time as it is to Amelia Island).

Saturday, 6pm we will be at the Crab Trap in historic Fernandina Beach. This is also about 25 min from Kingsland or the Jacksonville airport. You will be able to order from the extensive menu.

Each year these events have grown. In order for the facilities to plan it is important that you let Jim know each of the nights you will be attending at [email protected]. These are all great events to see and visit with your MBCA friends from all over North America.

You can buy tickets for the Concours here: https://www.ameliaconcours.org/shop/tickets

Mercedes-Benz Concours Seriesby: Diana Quinn, Concours Chair

Our Concours Series committee has been busy, and things are well underway for 2020. We think we have some exciting plans and we hope that you will consider coming to one or all of these events. This series will educate the novice through the experienced on how to prepare your car to be shown at a Concours event.

• Saturday, June 27th Concours Judging School –at Bud’s Benz in Douglasville. Several Certified Concours Judges will be on hand to train new judges and to recertify judges. This session is not only to train judges but to educate those wishing to show their car, you will learn how the MBCA 100-pt scoring system works and what the judges will be examining when looking at your car. Practice vehicles will be on hand to participants to judge and learn from.

• Saturday, July 18th Car Detailing Clinic –at Mercedes-Benz of Athens. Master Detailers will be on hand to show you how to prep and clean your car. They will share their Tips & Tricks on how to get your car clean as a whistle! Even if you don’t plan on showing your car this clinic will be fun and informative.

• (August, place TBD). Mercedes-Benz Meet-Up –This will be casual gathering of Mercedes-Benz automobiles. We are looking for a place where we can gather and just have some fun!

SAVE THE DATE! PCA Autocross May 24 at Atlanta Motor SpeedwaySave the date of 24 May as our friends in Porsche Club of America are having their first autocross of the season that day at Atlanta Motor Speedway’s parking lot and we are welcome to come. We’ll probably have separate classes for AMG Mercedes and non-AMG Mercedes and give out our own awards. Registration is not yet open, but we’ll send out the link once it’s up. There is also in-car instruction for novices.

Autocross is a great, low-risk way of learning car control in your own car while having fun too! An autocross is a competition, usually held in a parking lot, for the fastest time around a course set up with rubber cones. A typical run is on the order of a minute or so and speeds are generally not very high. It’s a fun, low-cost way of getting involved in performance driving.

One of our goals for this year is to have events that help us improve our driving skills. Our turnout for this one will help us assess how to follow-up with other similar events – autocross, karting, safe driver, safe family or even track events - please put this one on your calendar. More information to follow; contact Steve Chapman ([email protected]) or Gary Edwards ([email protected]) for more information.

SAVE the DATE! 10K Run Up Mount Currahee! After our Toccoa event (see the SAVE THE DATE for the May 18 Toccoa event), many of our more athletic members will want to visit the trails that paratroopers in training used at Camp Toccoa. The 9th Annual D-Day at Currahee 10K uses these trails for the racecourse. This 10K is a fund raiser for the Camp Toccoa at Currahee Project to preserve the grounds of the WWII era Camp Toccoa.

The race starts at 8 am, rain or shine. Let’s have a big Peachtree Section turnout for this challenging 10K. Sign up on the event website at https://www.camptoccoaatcurrahee.org/. This is part of the D-Day weekend events at Camp Toccoa, and we might want to have a group attend the Friday night banquet as well. Contact Gary Edwards ([email protected]) or Cheryl Edwards ([email protected]) for more information.

By: Ernie Smallman Sixty-six section members and their guests plus newsletter advertiser representatives from Sports and Imports and My Mercedes and Beemer attended the Peachtree Section annual holiday luncheon at Rays on the River in Atlanta. Peachtree board members and officers were recognized by President Joe Martin. President Martin recognized Diana Quinn as the Immediate past President. Diana had received her Past President’s plaque in 2018 that recognized her service for two terms (2018 and 2019). Immediate Past President Quinn presented the member of the year award to Sam Kamber, in recognition of his untiring effort to promote and organize the club’s presence at the monthly Caffeine and Octane events. The Jim Partain award was presented to Roger McKissick, honoring his tenure service as advertising director and current club Treasurer.

Attendees were treated to hors d’oeuvres of shrimp, crab, and lobster prior to lunch being served thanks to the club event subsidy. Lunch entrée choices were salmon with dill sauce or grilled steak both accompanied by broccoli rub and shaved Brussel Sprouts. After New York style cheesecake desert; we enjoyed club member entertainer Richard Fabozzi’s performance featuring a trip down memory lane with impersonations of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elvis, and other notable performers.

The members generously contributed toys for the Marine Corp Toys for Tots program as part of the event.

Save the Date Nov. 15, 2020 – MBCA TSD Rally –This will be a straightforward daytime TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) rally. On a TSD rally, a team consisting of a driver and a navigator are given a set of instructions that contain directions for following a measured route at a specified speed (or speeds). Based on this information, the objective is to arrive at a series of checkpoints exactly on time. Points are assessed for being early or late. Like golf, the lowest score wins. This event will be a straight-forward timing competition, with no complex instructions, traps or other not-fun course following stuff. All turns will be clearly identified and mileaged. Speeds will be set below posted limits and will allow for enjoying the roads and the scenery. Rest stops will be provided. The challenge will be staying on time. Scoring will be done through a smartphone app which uses GPS technology, eliminating the need for checkpoint control workers and allowing for more flexibility in locating checkpoints.

Although the details are far from complete, we anticipate the route to be approximately 100 miles, which should allow for about four hours of driving on beautiful Georgia roads, followed by a meal and awards presentation at a venue to be named.

Opportunities to learn more will be made available at a “TSD Rally School” to be held earlier on the day of the event, and possibly a second school some days before the event. Keep an eye on “Stars in Georgia” for further details as they become available! For more information, contact Jim Fekete at 734 718 5032 ([email protected])”

Event Planners Workshop Wrap up

Event Planners Workshop Wrap up and SAVE THE DATES for our 2020 EventsGary Edwards, Vice President

A very motivated and enthusiastic group of Peachtree members assembled at the Sidelines Grill in Canton on Saturday January 11th for training on event planning and to develop a 2020 schedule of events. President Joe Martin, Vice President Gary Edwards and Past President Diana Quinn led a session on the requirements and best practices of running events for Peachtree section.

After a lunchtime discussion of the participants’ interests, Diana Quinn (concours and shows), Steve Chapman (performance driving), Rusty Duncan (technical), Jim Fekete (Rally) and Leslie Martin (Social) led small groups that brainstormed events and came up with event planners. The result was a robust and diverse calendar of Peachtree events for 2020. SAVE the DATES in your calendar for these events!
