  • ST. CATHERINE OF S IENA CATHOLIC CHURCH

    4800 CONVICT HILL ROAD, AUSTIN , TX 78749 December 20 & 27, 2020

From the Pastor’s OfficeDecember 20 - Fourth Sunday of Advent

The Lord spoke to Nathan and said, “Go, tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord; Should you build me a house to dwell in?’” It is

time to build a house for God. The dwelling place of the Messiah as He comes to birth will be the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The ancient church called Mary “Theotokus,” a name meaning “God Bearer.” In the Gospel we are given the story of the Annunciation.

This scripture reads in a very formal manner. As I listen to the text I feel like I am looking at a classical painting of the Annunciation

and someone is reading aloud the commentary. The language is very one dimensional. He said and then she said and then he

said. “Hail, full of grace…behold…overshadow…nothing impossible to God.” There is no grit or grime in the text. Everything is very

antiseptic. We are looking at a painting. It seems very important to me that when we come to proclaim scripture and make it come

alive we have to move away from the art gallery and enter the stable. Things get a bit more realistic, a bit more messy when it

comes to giving birth in the stable. That sounds more realistic. We are now on the threshold of Christmas. The decorations are up. The

tree is lighting up. We have come to terms with a smaller crowd for Christmas. I guess that means there is more food for the rest of

us. If life comes down to making decisions, how about we make this the best Christmas ever. We have had little to celebrate this

past year. There have been disappointments all round. At the start of the pandemic I remember seeing families out walking. I saw

families riding their bikes. People said a good thing about it all was that they came to appreciate what family means again. I hope

we haven’t forgotten that. It doesn’t matter who is at home for Christmas. We are all family. Let’s all make an effort to make things

nice for everyone. We have our Zoom and our thousand other live streaming devices. We can still see each other and talk. Next

year, please God, we will all get together safely and really enjoy family. But for now, happiness is a decision. We will decide to be a

    happy family.

    With love, Fr. Pat

December 27 - The Holy Family

Mary and Joseph, new parents, have to take their baby to the Temple for a blessing. Just like every parent of a newborn they are

very protective. Think of the shock when they are approached by the old man Simeon, full of the spirit. In our society we tell our

children not to talk to strangers, but this stranger was adamant. He wanted to meet this child. Mary and Joseph knew that their

child was special. They knew that because of a revelation of God. But the revelation continues to reveal itself, and it unfolds. Simeon

confirms the revelation. That must have been scary for Mary and Joseph. You hope nothing bad happens to your child. Then they

are approached by Anna who spoke in similar vein about Jesus. The revelation comes and then it unfolds and expands. Who is this

special child of ours? Every day we learn a little bit more about our children. They spend their lives becoming more and more who

they are meant to be. From the beginning, Mary and Joseph had to put their faith in God because the world can be a scary place.

Coming into the new year, let us pause to say thanks to God for the blessing of our children. Parents tell me that their children drive

them crazy all the time, but they would not have it any other way. What a wonderful blessing children are. Without them home and

family would be greatly diminished. Too quickly they grow up and they are gone. Let us cherish the time we have with them. Ours is the

responsibility as their parents to nurture them. We must make them feel secure and confident. We must be careful not to impose on

them our own personal unfinished stuff. They must grow to maturity in freedom. Let us thank God for our family. There was a time

when family meant cousins and uncles and aunts. Now most of us live in what is called the nuclear family. Often, we are far from

other family members, so today our thanks to God is principally thanks for the people who live in our house at home. But thank you

God for all the others, the cousins, Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa. Our lives are enriched by their presence in our lives.

Each one of them adds color and texture to our children’s lives. God bless us all and everyone today on the Feast of the Holy Family.

    With love, Fr. Pat

teach a play-based emergent curriculum. This allows us to plan based

on the children’s interest and passion at a certain point in time. Teachers

will take into account the class skills, needs, and interests. Children thrive and

learn best when their interests are captured. Our play-based preschool is for children

Tuesday through Thursday. For more information, please contact Camille Parker at

    Liturgy

SUNDAY, DEC. 20, IS THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT: This

is the week we celebrate love. Although God our Creator is in

so many ways beyond our understanding, what we do know is

that God is love. As God sends us his only Son, Jesus, our

manger scene gives a vivid image of God’s love for each one

of us. This week, take time out to ponder God’s love for you –

and to reflect that love to family, friends and all whom you

    meet!

LITURGICAL MINISTERS: The church is in great need of your

ministry at our Christmas Masses! There are many open positions,

especially the less-crowded Masses on Christmas Eve and on

Christmas Day. If you plan to attend Mass at Christmas, please

consider committing to serving at a specific Mass. Sign up today!

ON SUN., DEC 27, WE CELEBRATE THE FEAST OF THE HOLY

FAMILY: With this feast, we celebrate the love and unity made

manifest in the family of Joseph, Mary and Jesus, and to aspire

to that same love in our own lives.

ON FRI., JAN. 1, WE CELEBRATE THE SOLEMNITY OF MARY,

THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. Mary is the model of holiness for

us in her willingness to hear and obey God’s will. The Vigil

Mass will be held Thurs., Dec 31, at 5 p.m. and the Holy Day

Mass will be held Fri., Jan. 1 at 12 Noon.

ON SUN., JAN. 3, WE CELEBRATE THE EPIPHANY OF THE

LORD. We remember the gifts that the Three Kings brought to

the baby Jesus. Epiphany packets will be available at the

church doors. Please take one home and bless your home for

    the New Year!

A SPECIAL THANK YOU to our priests, deacons,

altar servers, musicians, lectors, ushers, Mass

coordinators, and Ministers of Communion who

have given their time and talents to serve the

community, especially in this very holy season. We

are grateful to those who have been able to continue in their

ministries during these months of the pandemic – you have

gone above and beyond, and we pray God will multiply the

blessing back to you. To those who have been unable to do

so, please know how much we miss you! We pray for the

health and protection of all our Liturgical Ministries family.

Further thanks to the members of the Arts & Environment

Committee for returning time and again this year, enhancing

our worship both here and via the livestream through the

beauty of our church sanctuary. Blessings and gratitude to all!

  • Support for the Roof at the Cloistered Carmelite Sisters’ Convent

Greetings from your brother, Fr. Ray Pothireddy. Two years ago, the Bridgetine Sisters requested help to repair their con-vent roof, bathrooms and to improve security. We all stepped in with support for them. Now, those Sisters are well-protected and happy. Most importantly, they pray for all of us every day.

This past year, the heavy rains in India caused the 50 year old Cloistered Carmelite Sisters Convent building to leak causing much damage to the building and great unrest to the poor sisters. When they requested help from me, I approached our pastor, Fr. Pat, to let him know of their situation. He generously gave his permission to seek your support to provide the necessary financial help, the sisters need to fix their Convent roof. These sisters spend their entire time in prayer and remain within the four walls of their convent by totally depending on charities for their survival.

In the past three years some of the parishioners have visited these Cloistered Carmelite Nuns and witnessed how they live in prayer, depending upon charity and God’s Providence. Here are their testimonies.

“It has been a blessing to meet with the Cloistered Carmelite Nuns in Kurnool, India. These sisters have dedicated their life to prayer for the world. We are fortu-nate to have them also praying for us. They are dependent on our contributions for the continuation of their mission. Let us pray for them; let us support them.” – Stephanie and Greg Nelson

“When I visited India, I personally experienced these bright smiles behind the grill. Joining together to repair their roof will be a wonderful gift from our Cathe-rine’s community.” – Alison Manzer

“My visit to the Carmelite Sisters was very humbling. I am still in awe of the devotion to their charism, convent, each other and above all to the Diocese of Kurnool in spite of the many financial and physical challenges they endure every day. They will be grateful for our help.” – Juan Ontiveros

“It was such a joy to meet the sisters in person. Our meeting was very enlightening learning that their mission is to continuously pray for the world. This showed their sacrifice and devotion to all of us and has increased my faith. The vision still sticks with me today to see the constant smiles on their faces.” – Raymond Arriaga
