Dear Friends of SEO,

It is my sincere privilege to welcome you to SEO’s 50th Anniversary Awards Dinner.Tonight, we come together to celebrate a proud tradition of matching talented young peoplewith opportunities to succeed in college and beyond, and to ensure their continued success. This evening we will recognize three honorees who embody the spirit and values of SEO:Henry R. Kravis and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., Kelly M. Williams, ManagingDirector and Global Head of The Customized Fund Investment Group, and The HonorableJulián Castro, Mayor of San Antonio (SEOAlumnus ’96). Their leadership is a reminderof the integral role each of us can play in shaping America’s future and the lives of brightyoung people everywhere.

For UBS, our partnership with SEO first began back in 1982, and over the past 31 yearsnearly 550 interns have passed through our doors. Today, many of these individuals – ladiesand gentlemen of character and capability – are having a significant impact on our companyand the industry as a whole.

And that’s important because, for me, having a diverse talent pool isn’t just the right thingto do, it’s the smart thing to do. Our world is evolving more rapidly than ever before, andso too must our companies. We need smart, capable young people who are reflective ofthe communities where we live and work, and the clients whom we serve. SEO is theorganization that can help us do that. Through programs like SEO Scholars, they areensuring that under-resourced students are prepared for college, graduate on time and havethe skills to embark on challenging, rewarding careers in whatever fields they choose. Theproof is in the results: 95% of SEO Scholars graduate from college.

We have a lot to celebrate tonight, and as we recognize the accomplishments of the past, let’s also look confidently toward the future. Thanks to your generous support, SEO isstrongly positioned to serve countless young people in the decades ahead. I appreciate allthat you do on behalf of our nation’s youth. Please enjoy this special evening.

Regards,

Robert J. McCannCEO, UBS Group Americas

SEO 50th Anniversary Awards Dinner

May 15, 2013

Dear SEO Friends & Family,

When we started Sponsors for Educational Opportunity in 1963, our intention was toopen up opportunities for young people in underserved communities. I envisioned aday when they could become forceful and effective leaders in business, government, and philanthropy.Never did I expect SEO to become an organization with over 10,000alumni operating programs acrossmany cities in the United States andworldwide, including the United Kingdom,China,Vietnam, and now Africa.

SEO began in NewYork City as an all-volunteer mentoring program that helped highschool students from low-income families excel academically, get into and graduatefrom college and then go on tomeaningful careers.Today, SEO offers three distinctprograms:SEO Scholars is an academic program that eliminates the achievement gapfor low-income high school students and supports them through college graduation;SEO Career is the nation’s premier summer internship and training program forunderrepresented college students; and SEOAlternative Investments advances diversityin the alternative investments industry.

SEO alumni have distinguished themselves in almost every field imaginable. All havemade a commitment to improve opportunities for others, and of that I ammost proud.SEOwould not be where it is today, in countries around the world, without ourdedicated staff, alumni, donors, and supporters. I thank you for your continued support.

Fifty years ago, our country was in state of tremendous turmoil. Fortunately, wewerealso on the cusp of change. In the summer of 1963,Martin Luther King’s “I Have aDream”speech inspired us all with a new vision of equality and brotherhood – and SEObecame a part of that movement.Though I still look forward to a timewhen ambitionand intelligence alonewill determinewho succeeds in America, I trust that SEOwillcontinue to open doors for deserving young people, and that thosewhose lives havebeen touched by SEOwill continue to light a pathway of success for others.
