Connellsville E-news April Saint Soter Easter is fast approaching and this high point of the Christian year will certainly be a glorious morning. The music and message always lift one's heart to heaven. Of course the celebration of Easter starts with the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion and burial. But when you look at the origins of the church's celebration of Easter you will run into Saint Soter. Soter is the Greek word for Savior. This saint wanted to be like his savior in every way. His life mirrored his savior in such a way that he served as pope from 167 to 175 and is listed in the martyrologies. Soter is mainly known for three things. First he was particularly known for his personal kindness and his support for those who were persecuted for their faith by being deported from Rome to the mines and prisons. St. Dionysius of Corinth wrote, "From the beginning it has been your custom to do good to all the brethren in many ways, and to send alms to many churches in every city, refreshing the poverty of those who sent request, or giving aid the brethren in the mines....." Soter also was very interested in the relationship of families. He was convinced that the church had a vital role to play in marriage. As pope, he was the first to really ensure that the church was responsible for conducting marriage ceremonies for believers. Most importantly Soter was the person who instituted the annual celebration of Easter in the church. Prior to his leadership, Easter was celebrated every Sunday (Sundays are still considered little Easters in the church), but more haphazardly as a church holiday. Soter felt that it needed to be celebrated every year as a special remembrance. Although the exact date of when Easter should be celebrated wasn't worked out until the First Council of Nicaea in 325. Saint Soter

Easter is fast approaching and this high point of the Christian year will certainly be a glorious morning.

St. Dionysius of Corinth wrote, "From the beginning it has been your custom to do good to all the brethren in many ways, and to send alms to many churches in every city, refreshing the poverty of those who sent request, or giving aid the brethren in the mines....."

Soter also was very interested in the relationship of families.

I hope that as we go through the season of Lent and prepare to celebrate Easter, that you will truly have a wonderful Easter celebration. I pray that each of your families will be blessed by the Spirit of our Resurrected Savior and that you will use this time to remember those who are less fortunate and reach out in kindness and mercy. Have a Happy Easter!

God Bless,

Pastor Bob
