ighting solutions have come a long way since Thomas Edison

developed the first light bulb in the 1870s. Today, homeowners

have a variety of options, from basic bulbs to innovative

technology that turns on and changes colors at the touch of

a wireless remote, and many are turning to LEDs to light their

homes. Due to their compact nature, LED lighting solutions come in all shapes and

sizes, providing an almost unlimited amount of ways light can be used in a home

environment. Besides being much more energy efficient than incandescent and

CFL options - providing significant energy savings - they last much longer, don’t

contain Mercury-like CFLs, and also provide a variety of options for brightness and

light appearance. Let’s take a look at some of the specifics.

BENEFITS OF LED LIGHTING

When using LEDs, it is important to understand these three specifications that

define lighting: brightness & dimming, light appearance, and color accuracy.

Brightness & Dimming: Let go of the misconception that wattage equals brightness.

While for incandescent bulbs, wattage and brightness have a direct correlation,

lumens (lm) is the unit of measurement for light output. As important as brightness

is, dimming is a main feature of ambient and task lighting as users can set the light

level to create the desired atmosphere.

Light Appearance: The color appearance or correlated color temperature (CCT)

of light is measured in kelvin (K). When we want to know if a lighting fixture or bulb

creates a warmer or crisper, cooler light we need to look for the kelvin number.

The lower the number, the warmer the light will be and the higher the number the

more cool and blue the light will appear. A typical incandescent bulb has a color

temperature between 2700K and 3000K—to put that in perspective, the sun at

noon on a clear day produces a light of approximately 5500K.

The warm kelvin numbers (2700K and 3000K) are common options offered for

LED lighting. These warm white lights are a good choice to compliment earthy

tones and wood furniture. Neutral white (3500K to 4000K) accentuate lighter colors

more accurately than warm white lights. The cooler light is a closer representation

of what we look like in the outside world. Look for kelvin numbers between 4000K

and 5000K for your main ambient bathroom fixtures.

Color Accuracy: Light sources differ in their ability to render the colors of objects

“accurately”. Through truer color representation, we compare an object under a

natural light source, like the sun, to an artificial light source like those found within

your home.

The color rendering is expressed as the Color Rendering Index or CRI. The scale

goes from 0 to 100. A 2700K incandescent light bulb has a CRI of 100. A value

of above 80 is considered a good CRI and will be sufficient for most applications.

Higher CRI is beneficial for artistic displays, food prep areas, and bathrooms so

that subject’s colors appear truer to natural light perceptions.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT LED LIGHT FOR DIFFERENT AREAS IN YOUR HOME

Now let’s talk about how to best implement these ideas in the home. Lighting

is typically categorized as ambient, task, accent, or decorative lighting. Each

category provides a different purpose. When planning home lighting, it is helpful to

understand how these different light levels can complement each other. Ambient

(or general) lighting provides a uniform amount of lighting throughout an area or

room for general vision and orientation. Recessed down lights, cove lighting, and

pendant-hung fixtures are typical examples of ambient lighting. Task lighting is

meant to highlight a specific area in addition to the ambient light in that room. It

typically provides light in an area where an activity takes place, for example, the

kitchen countertop for meal preparation or a reading area. Accent lighting is used

to highlight objects like works of art, architectural features, or plants, by creating

contrast in brightness. This is often achieved using recessed or surface mount

adjustable fixtures or track lighting, wall grazing, and wall washing. Decorative

lighting is considered the jewelry for the home. The main function of decorative

lighting fixtures is to “look pretty.” Chandeliers and wall sconces are typical examples.

This layered approach to lighting is useful in creating a comfortable, visually balanced

atmosphere. Understanding lighting and the various functions is key to minimizing

glare and shadows, while adding depth and dimension to your home’s atmosphere.

Now add LED lighting into the mix and you get more versatility, efficiency, longer

life, and lower overall heat generation. Yet, the most dramatic benefit is the range

of color options (color temperatures) offered by LED lighting, from warm candlelight

to cool glacier almost blue light. Layering lighting with various color temperatures

gives you tons of great options to decorate your home.

MAKE THE CHANGE TO LED LIGHTING TODAY

The beauty of LED lighting is the wide range of colors that are available, the ability

to change colors, and the complete control over the brightness of the light. It’s

how the surface shines when lit properly, or how an item glimmers in a way that

catches the eye. You’ll be amazed at how much more you’ll enjoy your home simply

by casting the proper light.

color combination that can be used in both traditional and modern

settings. The white provides the neutral space for the black and brown

to bring a fresh, sharp high-contrast. It feels very current. The mixture

provides a great backdrop for high-colored art.

You’ve designed a lot of vacation or secondary residences for your

clients. What are some of your favorite ways to create a sense of

serenity in a space that may only be enjoyed seasonally?

With vacation homes, clients are often braver with their choices. They’re

open to experimenting outside of their comfort zone. Because the

client isn’t living in the home full-time, they’re more open to art and

accessories that have humor, fun, or an unusual element. Working on

a second home with a client is a great way to build trust because it

stretches boundaries a little further and builds a pathway toward doing

even more in the main house.

Travel must be a huge inspiration to your clients as well. What are

some of the ways you’ve brought ‘the resort’ into your clients’

vacation homes?

It’s important to design the home with its surroundings in mind. When

a client falls in love with the location, they want to see it reflected in

their home. But making a home look appropriate for its environment

doesn’t mean putting seashells and starfish all over beach homes or

antlers and pine cones everywhere in a mountain house. What we aim

for is to have a vacation home feel and look luxurious, without looking

like everyone else’s.

What’s your best advice for someone who is designing or decorating

a vacation home?

Hire a designer. You’ll save money in the end by not making mistakes. If

you’ve worked with a designer on your other houses, they’ll understand

how you live and make your vacation home better than you ever expected.

Sheldon Harte was destined for a career in design. He grew up in

an iconic Cliff May house in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley, after all.

May’s hyper-focus on the indoor-outdoor connection and open ranch-

style living gave Harte his first experience with the concept of creating

luxurious yet approachable rooms.

“I focus on quality, comfort and adding a timeless quality to the interiors

I design, so that my work withstands changing trends and styles,” says

the HGTV Top 10 designer, who partnered with John Brownlee to create

Harte Brownlee & Associates Interior Design in 1984.

Since then, Harte has embraced a deep sense of eclecticism. The

evidence is his diverse portfolio, which ranges from estates and villas

to family compounds, hilltop homes, beach bungalows and ski homes

in numerous locales, from California’s Gold Coast to Indian Wells,

Deer Valley, Carmel Valley and Vail. The Laguna Beach-based designer

is versed in a variety of styles from traditional to contemporary and

formal to casual, and particularly skilled at layering art and antiques. A

contemporary art collector himself, Harte is also a member of the board

of trustees of the Laguna Art Museum — a fact his sophisticated clients

appreciate. We recently asked the Laguna Beach-based designer to

give us a look into his beautified and rarified world.

Where do you go for design inspiration?

I travel. I’m always aware of my surroundings and I find inspiration all

around, whether it’s in the landscape or in a museum exhibit. I love

Hawaii because of its nature, and New York for the architecture and

design. These two places are always stimulating, each in a different way.

What do you consider your greatest masterpiece?

I don’t have one project in particular that I consider my ultimate

masterpiece. It’s really all about the client. Our work is a backdrop for

them to live their lives in. As long as we paint the picture down to the

last detail, then we’ve created a masterpiece for them that they can

call their own.

What’s the hottest trend you are incorporating into your work

right now?

Color. People are enjoying bounces of color throughout their homes.

I don’t like predictable – I like sophisticated mixes of color and mixing

metals. Another hot trend right now is the tension of the old and the

new, the smooth and the rough. Lately I’ve been into layering rugs, like

placing a Scandinavian rug on top of a larger abaca rug for an interesting

contrast of refined and tribal.

Can you give us some examples of unpredictable mixes of color

you’ve used recently?

Charcoal grey, chartreuse and white. I like the offset of the moody

and dark grey against the exciting acidity of chartreuse. They have an

interesting interchange, and I haven’t really seen it much on the market.

I also recently did black, brown and white together. It’s a sophisticated

Taking its name from its “coastal tableland” geography, Costa Mesa is a comfortable

suburban city just a mile from the Pacifi c Ocean in Orange County, California.

Located between San Diego and Los Angeles and home to a population of

about 109,960 (2010), Costa Mesa is known for its mild Mediterranean climate,

dynamic arts institutions and destination shopping.

The coastal plateau and the banks of the Santa Ana River housed settlements

of the Gabrieleño/Tongva and Juaneño/Luiseño people for hundreds of years.

After the Mission San Juan Capistrano was established, about 20 miles down

the coast, the padres visited the native communities and the area was used for

cattle grazing. In 1810, the rancho was part of the Spanish land grant to Jose

Antonio Yorba and later in the 19th century the land was divided. It continued

as an agricultural region, with small towns cropping up to serve the slowly

growing population.

One of them, Harper—often confused with nearby Harperville—held a contest

to select a new name. School teacher Alice Plumer won the $25 prize and Harper

changed its name to Costa Mesa in 1920, sticking with that name when the

city was incorporated in 1953. As the entire west coast population expanded,

Costa Mesa grew as well, drawing large numbers of military personnel during

World War II and becoming home for their families during the post-war period.

Today, Costa Mesa is an attractive suburban community, home to the Pacifi c

Symphony, the South Coast Repertory Theater and the Segerstrom Center for

the Arts. The OC Fair & Event Center is also in Costa Mesa and is the site of the

annual Orange County Fair, one of the largest in the United States, attracting

more than a million visitors each year.

South Coast Plaza is a global shopping destination well known for its luxury

boutiques, with a concentration of elegant stores rivaling Beverly Hills and Fifth

Avenue in New York. The city has also provided an attractive setting for major

corporate headquarters, with schools, parks, libraries and other facilities to

serve employees and their families.

Along the eastern curve of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains,

the Coachella Valley is a low-lying crown, jeweled with sparkling resort

communities. La Quinta, nearly surrounded by the Santa Rosas, is one of

those gems—a residential/resort community known for its golf, pristine

surroundings, equestrian lifestyle, and its appreciation for the arts.

In its geological footprint, the valley shows evidence of the Pacifi c

Ocean that once covered the landscape, as well as later traces of the

freshwater Lake Cahuilla. This was the traditional home of the Desert

Cahuilla Indians, who dug wells, hunted and gathered throughout the

area, and whose descendants live in the region today.

When nearby Indio became the halfway point on the Flagstaff -to-Los

Angeles rail line, La Quinta was settled by farmers who saw the agricultural

promise in desert-friendly dates, seedless grapes, onions, and corn. By

1926, the La Quinta Resort was welcoming visitors from both coasts,

and gained additional fame as the place where director Frank Capra

wrote the screenplay for Lost Horizon. Decades later, when the city was

incorporated, taking its name from the now-classic resort.

With more than 20 golf courses in the city of 35.6 square miles, it’s little

wonder that the Robb Report called La Quinta the leading golf destination

in the U.S. These courses, including PGA West, the Arnold Palmer Classic

Course at SilverRock, and The Quarry at La Quinta, designed by Tom

Fazio, host some of the most prestigious tournaments in the world.

The city of La Quinta has 20 parks and scores of hiking, biking, and

equestrian trails. The parks and trails each preserve an aspect of the

region’s character, from desert fl ora to ancient petroglyphs and, of

course, stellar views during the day and breathtaking stars in the clear

desert nights.

With a year-round population of 39,331 (2013), La Quinta welcomes an

annual infl ux of “snowbirds” who enjoy its many galleries, fi ne restaurants,

abundant recreation and entertainment options, shopping, relaxing

spas, and unlimited natural beauty.
