At Coldwell Banker®, we’ve been champions of home longer
than any other real estate brand, and our marketing has set out
to recreate these moments at home in the most realistic way
possible. But this year, we’re embarking on our most authentic
campaign yet.
Instead of casting calls and staged sets, we’ve put down our
cameras and asked everyday people to pick up theirs. Our
campaign called “This is Home. This is Where Awesomeness
Happens” celebrates these ordinary, micro-moments that shape
the house we call home. From baby belly laughs to telling your
mom you’re pregnant to the hilarious antics of our four-legged
family members, the “Awesomeness” campaign celebrates home
as we know it best – through the eyes of everyday life.
As a supplement to the campaign, we encourage you to submit
videos and photos of the awesome moments in your homes
using the hashtag #HomeIsAwesomeness for a chance to be
featured in the national advertising campaign. The hashtag will
also serve as a home for the thousands of poignant, funny and

Exploring the New California Cool
What do you picture when you think of “California
Style”? If you envision white slipcovered furniture,
Sisal rugs and bleached wood floors, you’re not alone.
These breezy coastal inspired looks are classically
California — timeless representations, of our natural
surroundings and the cool, casual, relaxed mood
that thrives in environments by the shore, after all.
My perspective on the new California Style, however,
is that it is as rich and varied as our topography,
encompassing all aspects of the lush indoor/outdoor
lifestyle that our state has to offer. In this column I
intend to explore what California style means and how
it influences our lives through all aspects of design.
Whether it’s our rugged mountains and canyons or
our sweeping deserts and coastlines, California’s
climate and landscape is — and always has been —
the muse for the creative world. In that way, the new
California Style almost defies definition. It embraces
the spirit of eclecticism, creativity and experimentalism
flowing through our environment, and by extension,
our lifestyles and homes. White and neutral colors
have been replaced with unexpected color palettes
of teal blues and slate gray walls. Homeowners are
now seeking interiors layered with casual function
and sophisticated style as opposed to falling into
one note informality. The art of mixing high and low,
old and new has never been more sought out in the
design community.
Britishborn Jane Hallworth, is one example of a
local LA designer who is making her own design
rules. When I asked her to define California Style for
View readers, her answer was predictably complex.
“California style is a paradox, a true reflection of
the many creatives that seem to live here,” she told
me. “It is at once precise and casual. As a designer
working and living here, it feels like the epicenter for
fearless impeccable eclecticism. I love the greats of
Modernism — Chipperfield, Zumthor, Tadao, John
Pawson and Steven Holl. They represent passion
restrained. Californians tend to use expensive formal
pieces casually and casual pieces formally. This
creates an interesting juxtaposition.”
Another favorite local designer of mine, Molly
Luetkemeyer, who is known for fearlessly embracing
bold colors and mixing contemporary styles with
a bohemian vibe, maintains that California Style is
all about the outdoors. “California Style is all about
comfort, ease and access to the natural world,” she
reveals. “The canyons and beaches never fail to
inspire. The details from a shell can get me thinking
about fabric and patterns, and the colors I see on a
hike can inspire a room palette.”
These talented designers embody a modern design
esthetic that is constantly evolving, highly nuanced,
and building California into their brand. California Style
is sophisticated modern; it’s Coastal Mediterranean;
it’s a vintage Cliff May ranch off a wild canyon in
Brentwood; there are no rules. So, the next time
you think of California Style, I hope you envision
cozy nooks mixed with hand forged artisan tiles and
hardware, walls papered with exposed woods or
vivid handmade wallpapers, richly hued accent walls,
small vignettes peppered throughout the home with
local flowers and vintage finds that add depth and
richness to an interior space. This is the new point
of view on California Style.

Located at the intersection of the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys,
Glendale is a robust and culturally rich city that preserves enough small-
town feel to be named L.A.’s Neighborhood of the Year in 2013 by the
readers and editors of Curbed.com.
Historically the home of the Tongva/Gabrieleño people, the area around
Glendale became a Spanish concession, Rancho San Rafael, in 1798.
The grandson of the landholder constructed the Verdugo Adobe in
1860, the first building in Glendale. The vast rancho was later divided
and sold and, in 1884, the original townsite was mapped and given the
name Glendale.
Among the early settlers, Leslie Coombs Brand brought visionary
expansion to the young community. He built a lavish estate, El Miradero,
partnered with Henry Huntington to establish Glendale service for the
Pacific Electric Railway streetcar, and, in 1919, built a private airstrip
to indulge his personal passion for flying. The city was incorporated in
1906, the same year that Forest Lawn Cemetery opened.
Today, Brand’s legacy to the city continues: his mansion is the Brand
Library and Brand Boulevard, a main Glendale thoroughfare, carries his
name. The Brand Library & Art Center, with a collection of more than
110,000 books, scores, DVDs, CDs, LPs and magazines, is a cultural hub
for the entire region. In addition to its art and music libraries, it has art
galleries and a recital hall and offers classes, tours, lectures, films and
other events year round.
The third largest city in Los Angeles County, Glendale has a population
of 200,167 (2014). It is known as the starting point for several important
ventures. Grand Central Airport was the departure field for Charles
Lindbergh’s first commercial west-to-east transcontinental flight. Bob’s
Big Boy hamburger restaurants and Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlors
also had their beginnings here. Today Glendale is widely known as a
major production center for the entertainment industry and, in particular,
animation studios, including Disney and DreamWorks.

architecture today. Home gyms, spas, lap pools, meditation and massage rooms - spaces for physical and mental respite - are important lifestyle components and common requests by our clients. � e unique architectural challenge pictured here
began with the cavernous underside of a hillside tennis court. In the case of this project, our clients’ desire for a substantial gym and spa facility for this residential estate was accommodated by slipping in a 6,000 square foot “vessel” below the existing cantilevered tennis court. Constructed completely independently of the existing concrete structure, the new spa houses workout facilities, lap pool, steam room, spa baths and lounge. Private spa facilities are tucked back into the hillside and open on to the large open gym space. � is central volume then opens to the outdoors via a � oor to ceiling frameless operable glass wall to the 25-meter lap pool and to the arroyo and terraced garden space beyond. Sheaths of white plaster form the ceiling and gently bow upwards and out to the natural light and gardens beyond.
