On the tails of helping find homes for over 20,000 adoptable
dogs last year, Coldwell Banker® is extending its collaboration
with Adopt-A-Pet.com and will continue its successful “Homes
for Dogs Project” into 2016.
Last year, Coldwell Banker was inspired by the canine stars
of its popular “Home’s Best Friend” television commercial.
Upon learning that half of the featured pups were adopted,
Coldwell Banker set out on a mission to make a difference for
the millions of adoptable pets around the country in need of a
loving home.
Last year’s campaign brought together national and local
Coldwell Banker offices and more than 650 animal shelters
nationwide. As we continue to celebrate the successes of 2015,
this year, we look forward to the launch of another canine-
centric commercial as part of a new television and online video
campaign that will continue to drive awareness of the “Homes
for Dogs Project.” Coldwell Banker together with Adopt-A-
Pet.com also intends to host another National Pet Adoption
Weekend in the fall.
There is no doubt that pets play a special role in our hearts

T he color gods have spoken and for the first time Pantone has anointed
not one, but two colors of the year for 2016. Dubbed Rose Quartz
and Serenity, the harmonious and refreshing duo replaces the earthy wine
2015 Color of the Year, Marsala.
Recognized as the global authority on color, Pantone Color Institute® has
shaped the standard for color trends since 1963. Deeming the Color of the
Year since 2010, Pantone’s selection process spans across all industries
(from entertainment and fashion to politics and technology) to determine
the influential factors which best define the global zeitgeist. And with this
year’s controversial announcement will come, as always, a cascade of
impressions on home décor, design, and fashion sure to last several years.
Pantone Institute describes Rose Quartz (Pantone 13-1520) as a “persuasive
yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and sense of composure.” The
warm shade of rose will pair nicely with spring florals and metallics as we
head into a new style season.
Serenity (Pantone 15-3919) is “weightless and airy, like the expanse of
the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in
turbulent times.” Adding this soft blue hue with a slight hint of periwinkle
will evoke a tranquil and spa-like setting intended to calm the mind and
please the senses.

“Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent
balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil
blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of
order and peace,” stated Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone
Color Institute, in a recent release.
We have to admit, Rose Quartz and Serenity work well alongside each
other, like a sweet cloud of swirled cotton candy or an enchanted Southern
California sunset. An exceptional combination for rugs and upholstery, the
duo lends itself to paint selections and decorative accessories including
pillows, throws, and tableware. Styling with translucent, glazing, matte,
and metallic finishes will yield the optimal effect while delivering a delicate
balance from across the color wheel.
Beyond providing an eloquent pairing for design projects, combining these
pastel shades challenges the traditional perceptions of color association,
further celebrating society’s move towards “gender equality and fluidity” and
the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression.
Predicting color is no easy feat. Sometimes it takes years for a color to catch
on and even the hottest trends may become immaterial a few years down
the line— the heyday of avocado appliances so prevalent in the 1970s has
come and gone (fortunately). Only time will tell for this perfectly pastel pair.

Paris Fashion Week recently kicked off, officially putting us in the fashion state of mind. The spectacle
of runway shows taking place at Carrousel du Louvre always leaves us freshly inspired, and in a spirit
of wonder. Which designer will be this year’s darling? Which wearables are going to be the next big
trend? And for us, especially since we’re immersed in the world of luxury real estate, which fashion
trends will cross over into the world of home decor? After all, fashion and interior design have been
closely linked for decades.
Just ask New York City-based designer Phillip Thomas, who counts 15 Central Park West, River
House and One Madison among his completed projects and has worked with clients across the
U.S., from Boston to Newport, R.I. to Southampton.
“There is an undeniable link between the worlds of interior design and fashion,” says Thomas.
“Each pushes the other in new directions by the use of colors, patterns, and texture. You often see
fashion designers crossing the line into interior design by the creation of homes collections including
furniture and fabrics.”
We sat down with the designer to ask him about the 2016 fashion trends he is most looking forward
to incorporating into his client’s interiors.
FEMININE ROMANTICISM“The runways were packed with floral, bohemian and ethnic patterns and textures evoking a sense of
relaxed informality,” says Thomas. “I see this trend manifesting itself in interior design from beautiful
florals at Cowtan and Tout to the premiere of the Albert Hadley Collection at Lee Jofa.”
SPARKLE“Quite apparent on the runways was the use of sparkle,” says Thomas. “By sparkle, it was not just
the use of metallics, like golds and silvers, but also the use of shimmer and reflectivity. In interior
design, this trend is apparent in fabrics, embroideries and trims that incorporate sequins, such as
new collections from Ardecora, Nobilis and Samuel and Sons, carpets with lurex accents from
Stark and Edward Fields, to wallcoverings and specialty plaster finishes with metallic elements or
contrasting sheens.”
TIE DYENotes Thomas: “The runways also saw the resurgence of tie dye which is often indicative of
the relaxed appeal of the summer wardrobe and an offshoot of the street art influence seen in
2015 collections. Tie dye has made it in to fabrics and wallcoverings from designers both in the
United States, such as Kravet, to European houses, such as Pierre Frey and
Eskayel. Gauzy linens with tie die motifs, for example, invigorate existing summer
spaces breathing new energy.”
FUTURISM / SILVER“Silvers and shades of grey have been in demand by interior designers and their
clients for many seasons,” Thomas points out. “The fashion runways continued
this love for grey by featuring textured metallics, such as mirrors and lame, in their
fashions. This story has been interpreted in interiors through the use of materials
such as glass and mirror which have had a renaissance based on production
innovations that have allowed for the creation of new and dynamic materials.
Galaxy Glass Silk Mirror for example provides the glow, depth and glamour of
mirror without necessarily the literal and distracting reflections of plain mirror.”
STRIPESAs Thomas remarks: “While they are always present on the runways of fashion
houses, stripes came back to the forefront on the runways this season alternating
and mixing vertical to horizontal stripes. Although quite simple in concept, stripes
can often be a challenge, as colors or proportions can impact the end result.
Interior designers are using stripes interpreting them new and bold manners.
Striped wallpapers are used and cut in asymmetric manners to create fractured
wall surfaces with depth and movement.”

A scenic city in the rolling foothills west of the San Fernando Valley, Calabasas
is known for its colorful history, its massive, gnarled oaks and its family-friendly
community feeling. Ranked among the 50 Safest Cities in California on The
SafeWise Report, Calabasas is served by the Las Virgenes Unifi ed School District,
one of the highest-ranked in the state.
Originally settled by peaceful Chumash Indians, the area was visited by Spanish
explorers as early as the 1700s and divided – not without plenty of resistance
by squatters and hired guns – into huge ranches and, later, farms. It wasn’t long
before city dwellers hungry for respite were attracted to its shaded canyons and
trickling streams, setting up picnic grounds, vacation camps and homesteads.
The iconic scenery also attracted early movie makers and found its way into
such classics as “Tarzan,” “The Adventures of Robin Hood” and “Stalag 17.”
The Monterey-style Leonis Adobe Museum is Los Angeles Historic-Cultural
Monument #1 and a meticulously maintained anchor for Old Town Calabasas.
The adjacent Plummer House was moved from its original location in West
Hollywood in 1983 and, like the Leonis Adobe, is available for touring. The
area’s most signifi cant development began after 1958, when the Las Virgenes
Municipal Water District assured the region a reliable water supply.
Just over 13 square miles in size, Calabasas is an unusually prosperous and
educated community, with some 62 percent of its 24,153 residents (2013) holding
bachelor’s degrees or higher. The median household income is $124,583 and
the city’s largest employers are the school district, Bank of America and The
Cheesecake Factory. A number of technology fi rms also call it home.
Just 22 miles from downtown Los Angeles and seven miles across Topanga
Canyon Boulevard to the Pacifi c Ocean, Calabasas has a strong tradition of
protecting the region’s environmental resources and looking out for the well-being
of its residents. Green initiatives safeguard open space, ban single-use plastic
carry-out bags and food packaging in polystyrene, and prohibit smoking in all

Los Angeles is home, no pun intended, to homes by world-class architects including Frank Lloyd Wright (think
Hollyhock House or Anderton Court Shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills). However, most are unaware that his son, Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr., (called Lloyd Wright to avoid confusion) designed more projects in the Southland than his famous father ever did. Wright began his career by apprenticing for the Olmsted Brothers (designers of New York’s Central Park). In the 1920s he moved to LA and became a production designer at Paramount Studios responsible for the castle and 12th-century village sets of “Robin Hood” starring Douglas Fairbanks. Using lumber from the dismantled sets, he created a pyramidal shell for the Hollywood Bowl in 1927 which offered superb acoustics. Numerous residences followed both in Hollywood and Los Feliz including the theatrical Mayan-inspired John Sowden House on Hollywood Boulevard, regarded as his best work (think Black Dahlia murder, too). His best-known project is the 1951 Wayfarers Chapel on the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes, an indoor/outdoor church crafted almost entirely of glass blending Wright’s brilliant design with his stellar landscaping talents. To the right, the masterfully restored Warwick Evans House, north of Sunset Boulevard in Brentwood, is available for sale. Wright created the estate in 1936 incorporating a remarkable forward-thinking open floor plan with seductive indoor/outdoor living spaces.
