View from the Hill Thorpe on the Hill News 101st Edition October / November 2016 Welcome to View from the Hill, your local Parish Newsletter -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- View from the Past by Paul Smith Hello and welcome to this 101st edition of View from the Past. Over the last 17 years I have tried to bring you village memories in photographs from the past 130 years and now find that my archive has just about been exhausted. There are obviously some of you who have probably not seen the photographs from the very beginning, or early issues and that is a shame as the village has seen many changes in that time. This month’s offering takes us back to 1896 and one of the oldest properties in the village still standing, “Holly Green” on Lincoln Lane, the home of Geoff and Wendy Sykes, with the view taken from Blacksmith Lane. Hello and welcome to this 101st edition of View from the Past. Over the last 17 years I have tried to bring you village memories in photographs from the past 130 years and now find that my archive has just about been exhausted. Editorial…...

Welcome to the 101st edition of View from the Hill. As we move into Autumn please be vigilant, “even nosy”, further thefts and burglaries have taken place in our village, thought to be committed by people from outside the area, so keep your eyes peeled, look out for anything suspicious and report it to the police.

Support is always required by the Parish Council when it comes to dealing with planning permissions for housing outside what used to be the village curtilage. Well, curtilages may have gone but we are still classified as a small village, although some would perhaps wish to have it otherwise. You can see more information regarding this in the centre pages.

What a great event was held at the Railway on Saturday 27th August, not put off in the least by the weather. A substantial amount was raised for the Alzheimer’s Charity and despite the late rain everyone had a great time. Another extravaganza is planned for the same charity on Saturday October 29th when a village ceilidh will take place at Lincoln Golf Centre; ceilidhs are a lot of fun so please support this event. Tickets are available now.

If you’re at a loose end during the winter months don’t forget the village activities; Book Club, Bridge Club, Craft Club and Walking Club all have meetings planned. There will be a THREDS Christmas Party at the Oliver Roper on Saturday 10th December and the Carol Service and get together is on Sunday 18th December, 4pm, at our lovely Church. Finally if you would like to contribute to the newsletter please do so, interesting articles are always welcome.

THORPE ON THE HILL BOWLS CLUB Another very enjoyable season is over for this year and although May 2017 seems like a long way off work has already started on the green. Results were certainly a mixed bag with promotion being gained by finishing top of the Cliff League, Division One here we come, but being relegated to Division 4 of Monday night’s City of Lincoln league. For the first time in the club’s history, we believe, two finals were reached, The Hospital Cup and The Evening Knockout Cup. Unfortunately the opposition were too good for us on both occasions so we finished runners up in both competitions; nevertheless a great achievement for such a small club. If you fancy having a go next year we will be very pleased to see you. For more information please contact Dave Cuthbert Tel: 695945 Battling it out at Eastgate Bowls Club

Loose THREDS The Village Walking Group

Walk 12 Thursday 25th August

On a muggy day, with rain in the forecast, we met at Whisby Nature Park for a walk which would incorporate eight of the best views in the parish.

The overcast sky and disappointing visibility spoilt some of the sights but we did manage to see Lincoln Cathedral sitting on top of Thorpe village. In addition, we climbed to a heady 31 metres (102 feet) above sea level, the highest point in the parish, where we had extensive views in all directions; we avoided the crowds at Whisby, thus enjoying the views at their most peaceful; we saw the village framed by the trees at the exit to Stocking Wood; we saw a typical Lincolnshire big sky and we were amazed by the density of tree cover within the parish when standing at the Eagle crossroads.

By the time we reached the Railway for lunch (always excellent) we had walked about 6 miles and had managed to avoid the rain.

There will be two more walks in 2016. In October (probably the 27th) we will revisit the Trent Valley Way. On this occasion we will walk up onto the old railway track and cross the river walking towards Fledborough.

In December we will repeat last year’s successful night hike. The date will probably be Thursday 15th December. Although it is a full moon on that day, it doesn’t rise until 17.56 and remains low in the sky until well after our walk is over. Hopefully this will ensure that we get the darkness which eluded us last year. The walk will be followed by a Christmas meal at the Railway.

Parish Council News

The meeting of the 31st August was well attended by the public and not surprisingly was mainly concerned with the development proposed by Mr. P Sowerby. At the end of the public session which lasted over an hour a vote was taken and this showed that all attendees were against the proposal. There were also a number of apologies given which were also against the proposal. The Parish Council will be strongly opposing the application.

Other issues which were raised included the potholes on Moor Lane; cars being parked on the pavement; perceived dangerous parking; and recent burglaries.

An update was given on the Neighbourhood Plan; further consultations were still to take place.

The donations of £105 raised from the Love your Parish Week Party were discussed. It was agreed to use the funds for the community, specifically to be put towards a new tree on the small traffic island to replace the one that is being removed.

The full minutes can be seen on the parish website.

St Michaels Church of England Primary School

Welcome back to another year! The summer seems long behind us and we are already steaming ahead with the new term. This year we have six classes named after famous Britains:

Potters (Beatrix) – Reception Windsors – Year 1 Lowrys – Year 2 Holmes – Year 3/4 Peakes – Year 4/5 Shakespeares – Year 5/6

We are hoping that this will help us to get to know more about British culture and embed our British values. We also welcome sixteen new Reception children who started with us last week – they have all settled in well and are enjoying the new outside area which we developed over the summer holidays.

Last term saw us say goodbye to a long standing member of staff – Mrs Emery but this term we have welcomed many new staff including Mrs Kelly who is our new administrator.

The children are busy preparing for the Harvest Festival which takes place on Friday 14th October at 9.15am and all villagers are welcome to attend. We will have a visit from a representative from Lincoln Larder as well as celebrate harvest by bringing new gifts for our altar – our altar in school is made by the children and each harvest we change it. Every class makes a new element for it and it always looks very different for the next year.

This term has started with our Year 6 children bidding for the position of House Captain. We have four house teams in school – red, blue, yellow and green. Well done to Leigha, Erin, Leo and Ellie who have been voted in and to Sam, Thomas, Jonathan and Daniel as their vice captains.

Please pop in to school for our harvest festival or even our open afternoon on Monday 17th Oc-tober from 1.30pm until 3pm. We look forward to welcoming you into our school.

The Natural World Centre and Whisby Nature Park

Taking a step back in time.. Can you help?

The Natural World Centre is to host a brand new exhibition showing the history of Whisby Nature Park set to open in 2017

The Natural World Centre is asking members of the public to share their interest and memories of Whisby Nature Park and to contribute to their ‘History of Whisby’ exhibition. The exhibition will focus on the development of the site and is hoped to be displayed at the Natural World Centre in early 2017.

It is hoped that the exhibition will be made up from a combination of contributions from the public who have been involved with the parks development or who have visited over the years. It is intended to be a celebration of the site and have a real visual element showing visitors the history of the site and how it compares to today.

Contributions can be in the form of documentation, imagery, articles, film or audio footage. The team are also collating individual stories and memories to add a personal touch to the development of Whisby. They are also welcoming any artefacts, materials, equipment or items which can bring the story of Whisby alive.

For further information, or if you have anything you would like to contribute, include or show, please contact Ann Worrell on 01522 688868 or email [email protected] In fact, if you feel you can contribute in any way, please contact us. Thankyou

Bridge on the Hill

Our Thorpe Bridge Club is celebrating a very successful first year. When we started 12 months ago many of the group knew nothing about the game of Bridge. Others were returning after a long absence. The cries of “I don’t know what to do” and “I know what it says but I don’t want to” disappeared as players grew in confidence. A few weeks ago we reached a major milestone and played without the aid of crib sheets. Great fun!

Anyone who would like to join us for an evening of relaxed social bridge is more than welcome. Partners are not needed.

For those who wish to learn how to play, a new beginners group is starting on Wednesday 12th October at 7pm. Come along and give it a go! Absolute beginners are welcome, especially 12-18 year olds.

For further information please contact: Dave or Sally Williams on 693128

Alzheimer’s Fund Raising Event - Music and Fizz Saturday, 27th August

With Carly doing an excellent job at the helm, Annie providing expertise, ideas and help and with plenty of support from THREDS, from Eagle villagers (who provided marquees and manpower), from all those at the Railway Inn and from all the excellent performers who waived their fees, the Music and Fizz event was bound to be a success. In pleasant weather, music played and fizz flowed from midday onwards. There was only a slow trickle of people at this stage and with heavy rain expected later, we were hoping that the majority of visitors would arrive during the course of the afternoon. This was the case so that well before the rain started falling, 195 people had paid £5 each to enter and, as children were free, the total number of visitors could well have exceeded 250. There was plenty for everyone to see and do with some very enjoyable music, a cake stall, a bric a brac stall, sponsored head shaving, a tombola (all prizes donated), a raffle (all prizes donated), a mini railway, kids games, an outside bar and a barbcue. Eventually it did start to rain heavily but spirits were not dampened and the music continued well into the evening. The success of this fund raiser was based on excellent preliminary preparation, with strong support from the army of helpers and performers who, in many cases, turned out before, during and after the event. Even on a very damp Sunday morning teams gathered early to clear up. However, without the 250 people who attended this extravaganza very little money would have been raised. So, thank you to everyone who paid a fiver and to those who brought along kids to make the event so successful. In addition, thank you to the performers, to the two people who dared to have their heads shaved, to anyone who helped in any way and to Carly for fantastic organisation. By common consent, the sense of community throughout the day was excellent and if this is the case in bad weather what would it be like on a warm and pleasant summer’s day? Maybe we’ll find out next year. The final total raised was a staggering £3270.33p Tony Magri

Love Your Parish Week

Earlier this year in May the village enjoyed a very successful ‘Love Your Parish Week’, an idea conceived by our Parish Clerk Janet and believed to be a first in the country. As Tony Magri said at the time….it was a wonderful week enjoyed by everyone who took part and very well worthwhile. The Parish Council are considering making this an annual event. Here are a few pictures:

A big thank you to the litter pickers.
