About four years ago we, a group of forty two young impressionable minds decided to opt for a
program which for us could change the meaning of education. Liberal Arts we were told was a
transformational learning experience. As we settled in, we discovered ourselves. We were trained
to think holistically. We were asked to always ask why. We were taken on experiential journeys
which were borderless and stimulating. We specialized in subjects which were fundamental to
our professional future. We were encouraged to debate, argue, discuss, write, explore, interact,
research, communicate. As fine assimilated qualities we were trained to recognize and appreciate.
We learnt to respect and flourish in the cusp of a great country.
And now its time.
As our future falls into place. For a world that justifies our existence.

Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), a leader in providing world-class education in Oil & Gas and
allied energy sectors has also taken an initiative of inculcating human values and has tried to tap the talent pool
in the form of future leadership for the world by introducing the School of Liberal Studies. PDPU realizes the global
requirement of producing young leaders with inquisitiveness and passion for knowledge and wisdom. The global market
expects students not just to be ‘informed’ but also ‘enlightened’ and ‘responsible’ today. Young leaders have to chart
their own path with innovative solutions for the world today which are seasoned with social concerns. Liberal Studies
programme, which is highly popular abroad is the need of the hour for the Indian society.
As the foundation batch of the School of Liberal Studies is on the verge of climbing the pedestals of research, careers and self-realization
for a better world tomorrow, I convey my best wishes to the students and hope that the School with its advanced academic structure and
innovative approach will enable students to participate in constructive work to achieve dignified quality of life through intellectually
self-propelled pursuits.
I am sure the inclusion of students from Humanities in the workforce today would bring interdisciplinary perspectives and mould
economic concerns with ethical dimensions.
My good wishes to students.

President’sMessage
Mahatma Gandhi used to say, “I do not want my house to be
walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the
cultures of all the lands to be bl own about my house as freely as possible.
But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any. I refuse to live in other
people’s houses as an interloper, a beggar or a slave.” As the foundation
batch of School of Liberal Studies is climbing the first step of their
corporate ladder, I am confident that the liberal arts pedagogy has
provided them enough exposure to the global trends and demands
but has also sensitized them to the grass root realities and challenges
of Indian society. I express my heartfelt best wishes to the batch and
would like to convey, “From those who have received much, much is
expected”. I look forward to the relevant and genuine contribution
from the batch for the nation and for the global society.
The foundation batch of School of Liberal Studies of Pandit
Deendayal Petroleum University Gandhinagar is passing out
their first pedestal and is preparing for the placement and further
studies. The journey of this foundation batch has just begun and there
are ‘miles to go’ still. I am happy that the students after making their
way through 30 interdisciplinary courses have also dived into the depth
of major and minor of their interest. I am confident that the liberal
arts pedagogy has given them lifelong desire to learn and update their
skills and aptitude that all modern corporations look for.
School of Liberal Studies has put all efforts to create future leaders of
the society, who will contribute tremendously in building our country.
These students have achieved excellence in their field of studies. My
best wishes to the entire batch.

As the first batch of School of Liberal Studies PDPU is getting ready to step into
the corporate world, we at PDPU have a sense of pride to have been involved
in crafting this group of fine young people. They embody a perfect blend of
education and a 360-degree outlook of the world weaved in by the hands
of experience, exposure and training in Business Administration and other
disciplines that they have pursued. It has provided them the understanding
to evaluate real life challenges and opportunities for making the appropriate
and timely decisions and, to become responsible citizens, employees and team
members. I am sure that from the time of their absorption as fresher’s in
organizations, they will certainly learn the skills and acumen necessary to go
up the corporate ladder quickly. My best wishes to everyone for a very bright
future.
Dr.TanushriBanerjee(Faculty Business Administration)

Faculty Speak
According to me, liberal education lies above all
other disciplines or forms of education. Due to the
knowledge of various subjects and the high exposure
provided by School Of Liberal Studies, the students
undoubtedly stand apart from their counterparts
in other colleges. In future, they would not only
have the ability to understand their work, but they
would also be able to perceive and interpret their
environmental cues very efficiently. They are the
torch bearers, visionaries and leaders of the future.
Organizations need them.
Mr.jagatShahTrade & Investment representative Govt. of Manitoba- Canada for India
SLS offers cutting edge programs focused on
exposure and exploration for the students which is
the need of the hour. Certainly industries require
technical people, however for strategic and long
term sustainable growth of any organization;
they need leaders and creative thinkers who are
able to think beyond the box. Liberal Studies help
students obtain such competencies. India needs
strategic thinkers, visionaries and motivating
leaders. An employee of liberal study back-ground
would be the end of search for Indian employers
certainly.

SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES, JNU
Students of the SLS-09 batch attended a series of lecture organized by Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. The program was undertaken by Prof Santosh Kumar, facilitated by Prof Bharat Desai, Chair of International Legal Studies, who happens to be a member of the Board of Studies in SLS, PDPU.

Project One World“International Economic and Commercial Sciences Students Association” is a global youth organization that develops leadership capabilities through their internal leadership programs and engages students and graduates in international student exchange and internship programs for profit and non-profit organizations. The One World Project is a one month long cultural internship hosted by PDPU and facilitated by AIESEC Ahmedabad. Vasudhaivakutumbakam is a Sanskrit phrase that means “The whole world is one family”. We receive students participating in this project from various corners of the world such as from France, Poland, China, Ukraine, USA, Netherlands, Colombia, Canada, Estonia, Hong Kong and Ireland. This project has strengthened the international appeal and furthered the delivery of the liberal studies program which has increased the leverage for all PDPU students including Engineering and Management.
SPAINDIAThe Bonsai of Spain in India
As the roots of a Liberal Education spread their reach across world, so it is necessary for a liberal studies student to understand not just his/her own country but the varied cultures of the world. That is what made PDPU bring Spain to India. We showcased Spain’s most famous dance that the world envies it for is the sensuous and beautiful Flamenco, the Las Ketch up song that moves one and all ,the fiery , romantic, dance of the moment Salsa , Drama- Amor en Espana , the very famous and beautifully composed track from the blockbuster Desperado. While putting up this zealous show we all realized that the two nations are quite alike as if we could find a little India in Spain and a little Spain in India
‘En este día una nueva vida empieza, compartiremos juntos.Un Amor, Un Sueño, Un Corazon’On this day a new life has its start We’ll share with each other one love, one dream, one heart.
Student Clubs
Video graphic association
VGA is a student club, which gives exposure to interested students toward film making. Club organises different activities like film making workshops, film appreciation workshops and takes part in different university techno culture festivals. The short films and documentaries directed and produced by students have been sent to national film festivals. Apart from reaching other institutes, the VGA films are capable of sending effective messages and shaping up students talent.
Soul Pepper

The club also participates in inter-college / inter-university events and brings glory to PDPU.
Rang
“The fine arts club” is fine arts and crafts club of PDPU to bring out the hidden creativity of students and provide a platform for those who want to show their creative and designer skills. Through the medium of arts, we become aware of the beauty of creation around us, able to explore and experiment on this beauty. It also provides opportunities to grow at one’s own pace. The club members are also taught how to create an artwork using the different resources.
Off-beat
Music has no language, it has direct connection with heart and it connects everyone even if they don’t speak same language. Off-Beat, the music club of PDPU helps them to do so. It enhances people to showcase their talent in any possible manner and it also helps to develop their skills and encourages them to explore their talent. This club is not only for the artist but is also for the music lovers and who has interest and knowledge about any aspect of music.
Society of Public Policy and Governance
The club was incorporated under guidance and supervision of Prof. Santosh Kumar. It aims to create stage for futuristic administrative practitioners in public governance and business for welfare in the country. It provides students with essential learning opportunities that will prepare them for careers in public services and innovative leader by developing their managerial, analytical faculties. There are lectures and interactions (Workshops) held under expertise of researchers from various research organizations like NGOs, Government organizations, public-private partnership firms.
Sorriso
The quote “Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst” - Henri Cartier-Bresson laid the bricks of the photography club. Well known as the camera eye of PDPU, the club provides an opportunity to the university students to showcase their creativity by capturing pictures while playing with lights and camera angles. The club organises competitions and exhibitions to display the best captured pictures by students and spreading appreciation messages for the same.
Community development initiative
It has been said that the world has transformed from caves to modern times because there were always a bunch of men and woman who thought differently. The CDI is a perfect analogy to it. It aims at developing and maintaining our environment, sustaining the gifts of Almighty, nurture and cherish the young and powerful body and souls of the under privileged rural children in every suttle and simple way possible. The school ‘Umang’ started for children of labourers have been successful in bringing smiles to people around.
Greek life
Greek life at PDPU stands for fraternity and solidarity. PDPU students come from various cultural backgrounds and are multilingual. The motto of the club is to create an ‘en masse’ identity. When I joined as a 1st year undergraduate student, my confidence was very low. On the very first day of SLS, a few students were given the chance to speak their expectations. The day I took a
decision I went up to the stage and spoke in front of the audience. After that SLS gave me a platform to build myself, identify my interests and a thrust to achieve them. I had the great environment of studying here. I learn to choose the best options. I am pursuing Business Administration as my major. I worked as an HR intern in Ma Foi Randstad in which I saw theories converting into practices. In last 3 years I have grown in many ways and I wish to continue for the rest of my life.
IshaSharmaSome people say “why to hatch all the eggs in one basket?” I absorbed the
same from SLS. At this juncture of my career, I have insight to what I have to do. To hold on to an optimistic view, I have back support of various subjects and exposure which came because of SLS. Specialization in economic major and clubbing it up with any of the subjects provides me unique opportunities in work field and for further studies. Internships at SLS gave me a sneak peak of the working of the organizations. While interning at Equirus Capital, I understood the pace, hard work and dedication required for completion of tasks. Now, I have a fair idea of the challenges ahead of me.

At each & every step, School of Liberal Studies has always proved that how it is different from other institutes. It has always carried forward its main
attraction with it, i.e. its uniqueness. I always think that, if it would not have been for that rural internship what would have motivated me to go for Public Administration as my major? Those 21 days at the rural level transformed my thinking & motivated me to work for the public sector.I never ever imagined that I would be working with the State Governments, at the grass root level, which included visiting and conducting surveys at the remotest areas possible & would be analyzing the two most influential policies of Government of India existing today, the National Rural Health Mission & the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.For me, this has been an opportunity of a life time and no place apart from SLS could have provided this to me.
vipuljain
Our lives are the outcome of the decisions we make, and I too made a decision to join The School of Liberal Studies, PDPU. Being the
pioneer batch, the school was young and so were we. The journey to halcyon days was together. And during this journey we learnt the most important arts of life, to honor our ideas and align them, to choose what we want to be, to take the first step and build a staircase. We here believe in choosing the course of one’s life and not taking it, we get to decide which discipline to study further. I took my first step and decided to take up Psychology as the major field of study. Our pedagogy’s agenda is’ learning by doing’ and this surely makes a difference. To experience the grass at the other end we all did our internships in various walks of life, I did mine with Gantar (NGO), Thomas Assessments Pvt. Ltd. (Multi-National Consulting Firm) Hindustan Zinc Ltd., Vedanta, Defense Institute of Psychological Research(DRDO). Each ending of an internship gave me the opportunity to a new beginning, each time I came out as a more matured and thoughtful person. With such varied exposure I aspire to channelize my efforts to touch lives.

Student’s Speak
My internship as a research analyst at infoAnalytica Consulting helped me to experience and explore
my working skills in the corporate world. infoAnalytica Consulting has an extensive expertise in outsourced knowledge processes spanning business research and analysis, financial, statistical, social media solutions, etc. It has served over 250 global clients till date. I worked under mentor Mr Aniket Banthia, Research Analysts on the project – High Speed Internet Access for US Hospitality Industry. Throughout the two month summer internship I was lucky enough to learn a lot from the company and also contribute to the project with SWOT analysis, transcription, creating database and analysing secondary research information. SLS being an interdisciplinary course helped my way towards corporate environment. Besides the knowledge gained at SLS, we have field exposure on subjectsandassignments which help us connect to real type business situations. This type of study helps us to get the just of the workings in a corporate world.
RahulBakshi
Experience builds and improves the skill. Knowledge without practice is like pot without water in it.
My experience added up not only to what was taught in the classroom but also to my attitude and practical aspect of knowledge. I did my internship at one of the most prestigious institutes of India the IIPA that is the Indian Institute of Public Administration at New Delhi, The institute offered us to learn various things and gain knowledge which an administrator or a researcher earns through various types of training and exposures. I learnt to follow guidelines, codes of conduct and functionalities of an organization. We were exposed to professional lives of bureaucrats’ military officers, revenue officials or general administrators. We also visited the Indian Parliament and the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) to understand the functioning and setup of these institutions. All these activities enriched our basic understanding of Administration and the people, who handle this significant process whether it is Public or Private Administration. Our everyday lives are governed by public administrators, and I would like to build such an aptitude.
ShashankBajpai
The very decision to prefer a liberal form of education was a decision I would cherish lifelong. I was a Chartered Accountancy aspirant a part of one of Gujarat’s premium Commerce Colleges. The
journey over the years has fetched me experiences which I never imagined. I realized how painstaking it is to conduct a survey, collect data, analyze variable and interpret it during my rural internship. I learned the dimensions of research when I was interning at JNU. I learnt the art of communication and motivation when I organized a cultural exchange program organized through AIESEC. I learnt how to meet deadline, when I interned in DHL-Lehmur Logistics Pvt Ltd, and how to balance work and life in a totally new city (since I was interning in Bangalore, away from my home in Ahmedabad). Throughout the years, I participated, won and organized various events, which taught me intricacies of time management and decision making. I am proud to say that I floundered
on various occasions, but floundering is what leads us through the ladder of success.
PranavNair
Liberal Studies provides a significant educational experience that enhanced my knowledge and skills. It sounded astonishing to them when I told people
that I am studying in School of Liberal Studies studying 30 different subjects in first two years and then pursuing my Majors and Minors in the next two. I relish this course structure which has given me plenty of exposure to the outside of the world. I did my 3 weeks Internship with Hats off Production, Mumbai with the serial R.K Lakshman ki Dunia. I learnt screenplay editing and dialogue structuring which helped me in my interest in the field of media communications. Being a liberal studies student, I feel that Employers are recognizing that while employees can be taught the technical skills of a job, the communication skills that liberal arts graduates possess are not as easy to find or teach.
