May 3-5, thousands of design and architecture enthusiasts,

tastemakers, and editors from across the country and around the

world will descend upon Los Angeles for the annual LEGENDS event. Over

60 international, national, and local designers will transform La Cienega

Design Quarter’s (LCDQ) romantic courtyards and alluring storefront

windows inspired by the theme, One of a Kind. Now in its eighth year,

LEGENDS has attracted more than 50,000 attendees, and this year’s

event is slated to be even larger, playing host to over 33 activities including

keynote panels, cocktail parties, book signings, presentations, and more.

We recently caught up with Lee Stanton, president of LCDQ, ahead of the

event’s kickoff to get the inside scoop on this must-attend design event.

The LEGENDS event is now in its 8th year. How did it become such a

phenomena among the design community?

The success of LEGENDS is based upon spirit—the spirit of the event itself,

the spirit of LCDQ and our design community, and the spirit of Los Angeles.

BY LAUREN GEGA People from around the world come to LEGENDS to connect, collaborate,

and get inspired. There really is no other event anywhere in the country

quite like it. Beautiful people, beautiful weather, and beautiful design all in

an energetic and creative space that I call the “Main Street of design.” The

LEGENDS event started during the recession to pull together, motivate,

and raise the disposition of our colleagues in the design community. Eight

years later it continues to do just that and, as time evolves, so does the

LEGENDS event.

Each year, LEGENDS embraces an overarching theme. Last year, we

explored the world of muses. What can we expect from this year’s

theme, One of a Kind?

The LCDQ is a unique community made up of showrooms with one-of-

a-kind antiques and textiles, custom furniture and lighting, and original

art. L.A. is a diverse, creative, and talented community. Therefore,

One of a Kind is such an appropriate theme for the LEGENDS event.

Today, designers are rejecting mass production and conformity, choosing

to celebrate originality, diversity, and artisanship. Expect to see provocative

displays with unique and rare objects.

LEGENDS 2015 enjoyed an unprecedented levelof participation of the most prominent nationaland international design publications.

We hear that Nate Berkus and Robert Stilin will be designing windows

for your showroom this year … any secrets you can disclose?

I am fortunate to have two very talented and creative designers working on

my windows. I don’t know exactly what they are each doing, but I can tell

you that there is serious competition to outdo the other.

La Cienega Design Quarter is a leading destination for interior design,

not to mention a treasure trove for exceptional finds. Will there be

time to explore the shops and showrooms?

Realizing that the LEGENDS event is packed with lots to do, this year we

decided to start the event a day earlier to provide guests the opportunity

to come back on Friday and properly enjoy the 60+ showrooms on their

own time.

As chair, what are your major contributions to the event?

My energy really goes into the planning for the event. Once I prepare

my showroom, the actual event is my time to enjoy the creativity and

inspiration from the hundreds of talented window designers, moderators,

panelists, artisans, and book authors contributing to the event. LEGENDS,

has been referred to as the “spring break for designers” and I intend to

mingle, network, and enjoy the company of my fellow design enthusiasts.

Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “I go to nature every day for inspiration in the

day’s work.” Nature not only inspires us to be creative, but also inspires us to

come together and experience the power of fresh air, trees or the changing

colors of a sunset. Whether it’s gathering the kids around the fire pit on a

brisk spring night, drinking wine on your terrace or inviting your closest pals

over for a relaxing Sunday afternoon at the pool, the outdoor spaces in our

homes give us a sense of being in harmony with the world around us

Stephen Block, founder and owner of Inner Gardens, a Los Angeles-

based firm that provides landscape design services and a global array of

sophisticated garden accessories and furniture to affluent homeowners and

celebrities, has a deeper connection to nature than most. After more than 27

years in the landscape and gardening business, he still marvels at a plant’s

ability to regenerate. “Plants are in my hands and in my heart,” he says.

“There is a vibration to them.”

His horticultural talent eventually earned him the recognition of top interior

designers like Martyn Lawrence Bullard and Michael Smith. He designed the

landscape for Ellen Pompeo’s Mediterranean-style villa in Los Feliz, which

featured an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven and a kitchen garden for

vegetables, fruit trees and a chicken coop, as well as for Elton John and

David Furnish’s Beverly Hills abode, both decorated by Bullard and featured

in Architectural Digest. His growing garden collection — one of the most

enviable and largest in the country — includes everything from $5,000 antique

French terra-cotta pots to $18,000 19th century French statuaries. “It’s like

jewelry for the garden,” he likes to say. “These objects make the house shine.”

What’s hot for the garden right now?

In general, the outdoor world is modern, modern, modern right now. It doesn’t

matter if you have a Spanish-style home or an English Tudor, everyone wants

a modern edge. Homeowners are looking for cleaner lines and less is more

— and that’s also an extension of the interiors. Even when I sell vintage pots

and outdoor antiques, I’m buying them with clean lines and very little detail.

Of course, concrete is a staple. It’s modern and simple. We do a lot of mixing

of styles and periods, and even mixing concrete with terracotta. The gardens

themselves tend to be modern too, but they are more consistent with the

exterior architecture.

With the drought in California and greater focus on finding water saving

solutions in other parts of the country too, are you seeing an increased

demand for drought tolerant landscaping among your clients?

I would say it represents 50% of market today. There are still homeowners

who have not given up on their lawns. This is happening even as we continue

to see reports in the news about homeowners getting fined for their water

usage. Some homeowners are converting their gardens with succulents,

Euphorbia, more gravel and decomposed granite. We’re also seeing lower

water usage grasses being developed, but it’s not as green and it doesn’t

feel as good on your feet. The question for those of us in the landscape

industry is, “how do we create landscape designs that arrive at lower water

usage without making them look like Palm Springs?” For me, I like to design

Mediterranean-style gardens with lots of gray-green tones. I like to use a lot

of rosemary and lavender, as well as fruiting olive trees and shrubs that can

survive on very little water. I also look at other ways to cut water usage, such

as converting spray heads to drip irrigation — and of course, many cities are

requiring this as well.

You were previously a real estate agent before turning your sights

towards horticulture. Has your real estate experience been helpful in

your line of work?

Yes, because I understand the value of curb appeal. When the landscaping

is beautiful, you set people up to love that home from the very beginning.

Spending money on landscaping is really important, especially when you

are trying to sell a home. It’s psychological. People often have an emotional

response to landscaping and they don’t even know it. It manifests in a positive

feeling when you first drive up to a house. It’s no different than walking in the

front door. It’s like a blind date. People often know within minutes if they are

interested in a house or not.

You’ve worked with several leading interior designers. What’s it like

collaborating with them?

Yes. I’ve worked with Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Kristopher Winters and

Michael Smith. I enjoy working with them a great deal. We really view the

exterior as an extension of the interior. When you’re working with designers

of this caliber, they help drive the design, and they’ll often do the furnishings

outside. I also do a lot of exterior decorating and work with landscape

architects. I call it “the jewelry of the garden”: the planters, fountains, benches

and fire pits. These are all must-haves. It’s like getting dressed for a nice night

out and there is nothing to make your outfit shine.

What type of plants are you drawn to?

I’m drawn to Mediterranean plant material. We plant a lot of olive trees and

Arabian Lilac (Vitex Purpurea). I love Westringia and Li’l Ollies, which is a

shrub form of an olive tree. And then of course, lavender. I love the color and

fragrance. I especially love the gray-green lavenders, and the shape and the

fuzzy texture of the flowers. I also like to use Agave Attenuata, which is a

gray-green color. And now you know my palette!

How important is it for you to balance elements, like fire and water, in

your landscape designs?

We view it as part of finishing a garden. We make a lot of fire pits. It’s not

just a practical element to keep warm on cool nights, but it’s also interactive

— people can sit around a fire pit and socialize. It’s a way to bring people

together, and we’ll often create a dining area around them, so people can

eat on them. Even kids can gather around them and make s’mores. If I had

a choice between fire and water, I would take fire.

What are your clients asking you for, right now?

I work with very sophisticated and successful clients, and they are like

everyone else. They want their home to be comfortable and livable. That

said, we are seeing a lot of outdoor rooms with televisions.

When Southern Pacific Railroad was marking out the halfway point

between Yuma, Arizona, and Los Angeles, they chose the spot in

Riverside County that would eventually blossom into the city of Indio.

Located 130 miles east of Los Angeles, Indio is today one of the desert

communities that populate the Coachella Valley with residents and

tourists drawn to the clean air, mild winters and relaxed lifestyle.

With the rail line as its hub and a frontier spirit, Indio grew into a vital

agricultural region, at one time the site of enormous groves of towering

date palms. But as more people were attracted to the area as a winter

health resort, agriculture gave way to residential development and

Indio found its true character as a recreational center.

Nearly a million visitors find their way to “The City of Festivals” each

year to enjoy celebrations of music, art, sport, food and, yes, dates.

Scheduled at the County Fairgrounds throughout the year, festivals

draw an audience from throughout Southern California and beyond.

Among the better-known festivals are the Date Festival, in February;

Coachella Fest, two weekends in April/May; the Indian Powwow, over

Thanksgiving weekend; and the Tamale Festival, in December. Indio also

hosts rodeos, music concerts and a variety of other popular events.

Known for its world-famous polo clubs and annual equestrian events,

Indio also attracts golfers and birdwatchers in large numbers. It is a

National Bird Sanctuary, with vast seasonal migrations of birds headed

to the Salton Sea, and is also a gateway to the extremely scenic and

geologically important Joshua Tree National Park.

An estimated population of 85,633 (2014) is served by six elementary

and two middle schools that are highly rated under the California

Distinguished Schools program. A strong sense of community and

history supports the town’s Historic Mural Project, with ten murals

celebrating Indio’s railroad and agricultural origins decorating old

town structures.

Zip codes. Situated in southwest Orange County, about halfway between

Los Angeles and San Diego, Laguna Beach is under nine square miles

While the area’s prehistoric settlements date back nearly twelve thousand

years, the coast was the historic home of the Tongva peoples. As with

Laguna Beach became part of the United States after the Mexican-

American War.

Attracted by the region’s beauty and encouraged by the incentives of

the Homestead Act, settlers made their homes along the shore, in the

scenic canyons and around freshwater lakes (lagonas). They planted

eucalyptus groves and welcomed the tourists who pitched their tents

along the beaches each summer. The first post office was established

in 1887, hotels and restaurants were built to serve the growing trade

and the city of Laguna Beach was incorporated in 1927.

As word of the area’s beauty spread, numerous plein air artists joined

the permanent population and galleries opened to display their work.

Hollywood filmmakers and privacy-seeking celebrities weren’t far behind.

In 1932, the first Festival of the Arts was held and its “living pictures”

launched the Pageant of the Masters—annual traditions that continue

to the present day.

Over the past century, Laguna Beach has refined its reputation as an art

destination, with a world-class art museum, a massive collection of public

art, dynamic festivals, art tours and classes, galleries and much more.

At the same time, its gorgeous protected shoreline and Mediterranean

climate have inspired a vast array of recreational options, making Laguna

Beach a truly livable resort town.
