VVA 862 Color Guard makes its way down Midland Avenue

VVA Makes a Grand Showing in Midland4th of July ParadeKathleen (Katy) Miller, Public Affairs

This day—the birth of our country—belongs to us. On this Independence Day 2017, we remember all those who made sacrifi ces for our freedom and celebrate with a parade.

Members from VVA 862 and its Color Guard, marched in the Midland parade to honor our country’s heritage. DAV 107, the American Legion, local VFWs, fi re trucks, ambulances, tractors and antique cars, and enthusiastic bands kept time in the parade. Following the parade, the Midland VFW had a banquet for the veterans.

The 16th Annual Support Our Troops Rally held on Sunday, June 11th at the Gazebo in Irvine Park in Beaver was another resounding success. The Rally began at 3:00 PM with an invocation by Chaplain Don Villella, the Presentation of Colors by the Chapter 862 Color Guard, and the National Anthem sung by Diane Brosius. We had a beautiful sunny day with mild temperatures and no rain. This was the largest turnout of veterans, families, and local residents than we had previously seen.

As has been in the past, the entire afternoon program was free. Beaver Supermarket donated food items and soft drinks and Brighton Music Center donated and operated their modern sound equipment which made the musical entertainment exceptional. Rita Swesey printed donation signs and, together with others, sold the signs which paid for the event. Many other individuals and organizations also contributed to the event but are too numerous to list.

The entertainment program, organized by Jay Paisley and directed by Diane Brosius and Rudy Zetz , was excellent. It began with popular music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s followed by patriotic selections from The Voices.

Much of the credit for organizing the program again goes to AVVA Life Members Bob Gwin and Rita Swesey. They will tell you that they didn’t do it alone, but it takes leaders with an idea and a vision to turn that idea into a successful event. Bob has done this for years, and now Rita has joined him to make the event even more successful. They plan to improve the Rally each year.

I want to thank everyone who contributed to the Support Our Troops Rally and helped make this event so memorable. Our chapter again followed and demonstrated the founding principle of the Vietnam Veterans of America that “Never Again Will One Generation of Veterans Abandon Another.”

August Birthdays

During the month of June, red roses were sent in memory of eleven deceased Vietnam Era veterans and one family member of Chapter 862. Our Chapter sends a single red rose

and vase to the funeral home for every military veteran, or family member of a member of our chapter, who passes away. Chaplain Don Villella scans the newspapers daily and orders the roses sent to the appropriate funeral home in honor of the deceased veteran(s) or family member.

Legislative Update July 2017

Bart Farzati, Government Aff airs Chairman“As of July 5, every VA emergency room will be prepared to receive veterans with a ‘bad paper,’ (other than honorable) administrative discharge, who are experiencing a mental health crisis, and that they are now eligible to be treated for an initial period of up to 90 days, which can include inpatient, residential, or outpatient care.” VVA press release 20 June 2017. Let this be a reminder to all veterans that VA emergency mental health care is also available to you. As we age events around us and in our own lives may trigger the need for mental health care we never before thought we needed.

The House of Representatives NDAA released in late June calls for a 2018 COLA of 2.4% pay increase for military retirees and no changes in fees associated with Tricare For Life, the health care plan for retired military over age 65.

H.R.299 - Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2017 now has 288 cosponsors which usually means representatives are sure they will never have to vote on the bill. This year however Chairman Roe has said he is ready to take a closer look at this important legislation. No hearings have been announced yet.

VA has established a presumptive service connection for Veterans, Reservists, and National Guard members exposed to contaminants in the water supply at Camp Lejeune from August 1, 1953 through December 31, 1987 who later developed one of the following eight diseases:

• Adult leukemia• Aplastic anemia and other

myelodysplastic syndromes• Bladder cancer• Kidney cancer• Liver cancer• Multiple myeloma• Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma• Parkinson’s disease

Presently, these conditions are the only ones for which there is suffi cient scientifi c and medical evidence to support the creation of presumptions. However, VA will continue to review relevant information as it becomes available. Veterans who are experiencing other health conditions that they think may be related to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune are encouraged to contact their primary care provider and to fi le a claim. VA reviews and decides disability compensation claims on a case-by-case basis.htt ps://www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/camp-lejeune/

Donation From Black Hawk Golf Course

Larry Googins, PresidentAt the June 21st general membership meeting, we were pleased to introduce and welcome Mr. Mike Blackwood and Mr. Jay Daniels from Black Hawk Golf Course. Philip Morris established a mutual partnership with the golf course several years ago. On May 20th, Black Hawk Golf Course sponsored the Annual Armed Forces Golf Outing for residents and military supporters in our area. Many of our chapter members also participated and enjoyed a day of golfi ng and lunch. At our membership meeting, Mr. Blackwood and Mr. Daniels presented a large donation to our chapter from the proceeds from the day’s event. We are indebted to Black Hawk Golf Course for the continued support of our local veterans. Please visit the golf course and thank them for their partnership and contribution.

Kathy (Katy) Miller, Public Affi ars

The people of Beaver County who contributed to the Tom and Linda McCormack Foundation showed their generosity by sending a truckload of medical equipment to the people of Panama. Volunteers—just everyday citizens and veterans (WWII, Korea, and Vietnam Vets of 862)—helped load a 40-foot tractor-trailer full of wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, artifi cial limbs, and children’s clothing, on June 13th.

(Editor’s note: for more about the Tom and Linda McCormack Foundation, visit their website at htt p://www.panamamccormackfoundation.com/)

Thank you!Kathy (Katy) Miller, Public Aff airs

Thanks to our drivers who drive veterans on the Veterans’ Van to Pitt sburgh hospitals every week: Jerry Fisher, Tony Whitt ed, Ken Oakes, and Bart Farzati.

Thanks from the First United Presbyterian Church of Darlington to VVA 862 for our donation which helped buy a wheelchair elevator with hydraulic drive that helps transport veterans and other church members.

Quilt of ValorMichelle Wilcox, Secretary

The Beaver Valley Piecemakers Quilt Guild have been involved with Quilts of Valor for over 10 years. As a kickoff to their newest campaign, the guild chose to honor two of their own members.
