Have you ever wondered what

it would feel like to win a trophy

for taking a written test? It’s pretty

hard considering that the closest

thing that you can come to the shiny,

gold-plated statuette of plastic is a

capitol letter on a piece of paper.

This is where the W.Y.S.E. Team

comes into play. W.Y.S.E. stands

for World Wide Youth for Science

and Engineering. The headquarters

of W.Y.S.E. is the University of

Illinois. W.Y.S.E. is intended

to increase students’ interest in

mathematics and science.

Since 2004, Mr. Jones, who

inherited the team from Mr.

Reichert, has been watching over

this surprisingly competitive

activity.

Mr. Jones and all his W.Y.S.E.

Team members hope to become

state champions or, as stated by

Mr. Jones, “At least make it further

than Anna-Jonesboro.”

The first of the W.Y.S.E. events

takes place at Shawnee Community

College on February 4th. Every

member takes two tests. The tests

are in computer science, English,

chemistry, mathematics, physics,

biology, and engineering graphics.

This year, more test content is

available online, making it easier

to prepare for events.

All of the schools are divided

into divisions based on the size of

there student body. Vienna is part

of the 700 division. This is the

second to smallest division, only

larger than the 300 division, and

smaller than the 1500 division, and

even larger, the Unlimited division.

Passports Ready! VHS

Students Travel the GlobeThis year the Globetrotters will

once again be going on “holiday,”

as the Brits would say it. However,

this spring break, London is not on

our schedule like last year. This

year’s group will be traveling even

farther east and starting our trip in

the capital of Bavarian Germany;

Munich. Before going home we will

have traveled through Germany,

Austria, Italy, and Switzerland.

A few of the stops include

Neuschwanstein castle, home of

the “Mad” king and model for

the Sleeping Beauty Castle at

Disneyland; the Black Forest; WWII

concentration camp at Dachau; snow

capped Alps and alpine meadows;

Venice, home of Marco Polo, canals,

gondolas, and gondoliers; and Romeo

and Juliet’s “fair” Verona. If all this

sounds like great adventure, it is.

“This is my first year to go on

the Globe Trotters trip, and I am so

excited! I can’t wait to fly across

the Atlantic Ocean and see part of

Europe. I am a little nervous about

being so far away from home and

my parents for nine days, but it

will be worth it!” says Junior Paige

Langston.

Drake Sanders, Senior, attended

the 2008 Greece trip he said “I had

alot of fun in Greece. It was worth

all the money spent. It was good

being able to go overseas in my high

school years. It was a great cultural

experience being able to see all

the islands and temples. I would

recommend it for anyone looking for

fun and adventure.”

If you are not globe trotting

this year, maybe next year’s spring

break trip to Scotland and Ireland is

for you. Any student can go; bring

a parent, grandparent, or friend if

you like. We will be traveling to the

Scottish highlands, visiting castles,

cruising Loch Ness (maybe Nessie

will make an appearance), touring

the beautiful St. Patrick’s cathedral,

day tripping to the Waterford Crystal

factory (look but don’t touch),

romping around bogs and ancient

ruins, and maybe even kissing the

Blarney Stone at Blarney castle.

If this adventure through Scotland

and Ireland sounds like fun, join us.

It is not too late to sign up. See Mr.

Giffin for details.

Madrigal finally returns, after a year of rest

For years students in our school

have been a part of the Madrigal.

But, with all the changes in band and

choir teachers, having a Madrigal

has been nearly impossible for the

past few years. Because of a having

a lasting director, the Madrigal has

finally returned!

This year’s Madrigal consisted

participated in the Madrigal this

year. Tara Garrett, who is a

characters.

Also, among the cast of

Pirates, Arrrg!, were three student

from Vienna Grade School: Seth

Holoman, Noah Jackson, and

Matthew Williams, who played the

trumpet fanfare.

A Madrigal is a Christmas

tradition and is similar to a play.

The audience is served a meal and

watches the performance while

eating. It’s fabulous food, and

laugh-so-hard-you-almost-choke

entertainment!

If you didn’t come see the

Madrigal this year, cross your

fingers, because it might be coming

back in 2011!

Music students show off their hard work in Christmas Concert

Cookies, quilts and letters sent to American heroesBy Jared Johnson

In December of 2009, Mrs.

McGinnis’ class wrote letters and

baked cookies for the soldiers

who are in, or have been to, Iraq,

fighting for our country. Many

students participated in the letter

writing and cookie making. They

were successful in mailing the

letters, and they also had great fun.

Here are a few examples of the

letters that were written and

sent out to the American heroes.

Your willingness to serve our

country by putting your life on

the line is greatly appreciated.

The job being done for us is a

prime example that your actions

speak louder than words. Once

again, your unselfish character

is greatly appreciated and do

not go by unheard of. Behind a

mother and father, my respect

for you is greater than any other.

Lots of love and thanks.

Thank you for doing what you

Once again, on December

17th, the music classes have had

a stellar performance with their

Christmas concert. The students

have been working hard since the

beginning of the year, and their

hard word has paid off.

The guitar class started off the

night by playing some Christmas

favorites. For most of the students,

it was their first year of playing,

and they did an excellent job of

showing how far they have come

in playing the guitar.

Choir was the next performing

group, continuing their tradition

of an Acappella (an Italian term

for a choir piece without musical

accompaniment), and Gospel piece

called “Follow That Star.”

And last but definitely not least,

the third group that performed was

Vienna High School’s band. They

performed songs including “Clash

of the Carolers,” and “Sleigh

Ride.”

All the students performed

their best and earned a heartfelt

standing ovation from the crowd.

This being the third year that

Mr. Newbold has taught here at

Vienna High School, he has done

an absolutely amazing job with all

of the music classes.

are doing for our country, it means

a lot to me. I know it’s hard on you

on the holidays because you can’t

go home and see your family. But

they know this is something you

want to do to help our country out.

So they just have to deal with it, I

am sure they miss you a lot and

they want you to be safe. I know

some of my friends and family are

over there where you guys are, and

I miss them to deal and can’t wait

to see them. Be safe. - Amber

Thank you for your service to our

country. It is thanks to you that

my family can live safely from

day to day. My name is Keeley.

I am a freshman at Vienna High

School. I’m so excited to finally

be in high school, also I’m excited

because I was voted by my class to

be a homecoming attendant. our

homecoming is December the 4th

and I can’t wait for it to be here.

Our school has a huge celebration

for it is the week of coming and

each day we have a different

theme to dress up to. Hope this

brightened your day. -Keeley

Thank you to a Hero,

Dear Solders,

Dear Solders,

Ms. Judy Fosse, a quilt maker at

Calico Corners, has been making

quilts for the soldiers. To the right

is an example of one of the quilts

that Ms. Fosse has made. Along

with make beautiful quilts, she is

also the person who actually sent

off the letters and quilts. She has

done many things for the soldiers

and we, Americans, should look at

her examples and do the same for the

defenders of our country.

This year has been very busy for the Beta Club.

One of the Beta club sponsors, Mrs. Bradley, said it

has been “Much, much busier, with our officers choos-

ing to complete a service project every month.” With

a new project every month, Betas have had more op-

portunities for service hours than ever.

In December, for instance, there were many differ-

ent activities, including raising money to buy gifts for

less fortunate children. For each five dollars students

brought in they earned one of their twenty required ser-

vice hours to attend State convention. On December

10th, several members went to Mrs. Bradley’s room

to sort out the toys that Mrs. Bradley purchased with

the money that was raised. They were able to sponsor

over 20 children with the gifts that were bought.

Betas are also selling flower certificates from This-

N-That Flower Shop. For only twenty dollars, the

card allows buyers to receive a bouquet of flowers

each month. The flowers incorporate a theme from the

time of year. Half of the money that each Beta sells

goes towards each Beta member’s cost for State Con-

vention.

The Beta lock-in was a huge success. Many students

attended, and with the entertainment provided, there

was no way for Betas to get bored. Little sleeping

was involved since there was a ping-pong table, sev-

eral video games such as Sing Star for the Wii, and

Halo for the Xbox.

Yet another project that Betas are working on this

January is collecting toiletry items for Autumn Ridge,

Kirsten Trambley and Mellisa Maze contemplating what

to buy for the children.

Been wondering what the Betas are doing?

is hosting an 1980’s themed Valentine’s dance,

starting after the basketball on February 12th and

ending at midnight.

Would someone please explain the game to

It’s swine time in Mr. Hight’s room

Tyler Harner cutting into the pigs liver, which is located

under the heart and lungs, but above the intestines.

Mr. Hight’s Biology class dissected

pigs and learned about all twenty

nine organs. In order to dissect the

pigs, there were three main cuts.

To make the Y-cut you first cut the mid

stomach down to the back legs. Then you

cut up to chest and down the sides by the

front and back legs, revealing all the organs,

The second cut is the mouth cut. To

make this cut, you cut the corners of the

mouth back to and through jaw bone,

and pull the mouth open to expose

soft pallet, hard pallet, and epiglottis.

The third and final cut opens

the chest to expose the heart, lungs,

thymus, thyroid glands, and larynx,

which is also known as the voice box.

This project was simply for the

educational purpose of discovering and

examining a pig’s organs, and how the pigs’

insides highly resemble a human. They

both have the same sizes and positions of

the internal organ. For example, if you

laid a person and an adult pig on their back

and looked at their insides, all the organs

would be in almost the same exact places.

Male pigs are called boars, the

females are called sows, and the baby

pigs (as dissected) are called piglets.

The average pigs dissected were male.

Mrs. Bradley and Mr. Giffin, book club

sponsors.Andrew Williams, Ethan McGinnis, and Cody Hosfeldt sitting looking at their books.

Members of the book club discussing their book.

VHS has a new club and it

has had a great turn out so far.

The sponsors of the club are Mr.

Giffin and Mrs. Bradley. They

are deeply honored to be the club

sponsors. “It is very important for

students to read because it helps

them develop their vocabulary

and it generally improves reading

comprehension,” stated Mrs.

Bradley and Mr. Giffin.

Both Mr. Giffin and Mrs.

Bradley thought of starting a book

club. The club is planning to read

approximately one book every three

weeks. It doesn’t cost anything to

join the book club. The only cost is

that you buy your own books.

They meet once a month to

discuss the books they would like

to read. The club is a great way

to meet new friends and get to

know your fellow students a little

better. The club chooses the books

they read. Either the students will

suggest one or they get to vote

on the book they want to read.

The club plans on reading the

book, The Lovely Bones, and then

going to see the movie. The book

and movie, The Lovely Bones, is

about a girl who was murdered and

comes back to watch over her family

to get vengeance on her killer and

help her family heal from her death.

This is just one of the many

great books you will be able to

read. It’s not to late to join book

club. So go find Mrs. Bradley

or Mr. Giffin and join now!

It was crazy day on Thursday

and students dressed up as random

and wild as possible. Clothes clashed

and mismatched as untamed hair

and make-up made eye brows rise.

The Juniors managed to take the win

for the most dressed for Thursday.

An obstacle course was the

Thursday’s activity. This course

involved crawling under mats,

carrying a ball with a dinosaur

grabber toy, spinning in circles

then dribbling a basketball, jump

roping, and rolling people on

scooters through cones blindfolded.

Continued from page 1

The Freshmen pulled out the win

for the obstacle course and left the

crowd impressed over their victory.

As Friday rolled along, blue and

orange flooded the halls throughout

the school as people expressed their

VHS spirit. Traditionally, Friday

has always been spirit day and

VHS is definitely keeping it alive.

This day has been claimed to be the

most entertaining day of the week.

Homecoming candidate skits and

class lip syncs are displayed after

lunch and until the end of the day.

The class lip sync theme this year

was a little different. Each class had

a different music genre. Freshmen

were classic rock, Sophomores

were hip-hop, Juniors were Rap,

and the Seniors were country. The

Sophomores prevailed over the

other classes in order to take home

first place in the class lip syncs.

You Caught MeBy Kaylee Knight

Straight from the HeartPage by Kaylee Knight, Sarah Nelson, and Paige Langston

From the darkness of the night, Emerges rays of morning light.Dispelling Moon and Midnight’s mist, Engulfing Earth in Sun’s warm kiss;‘Tis the gift of Morning’s Fire, to burn the night and spark desire. To give us warmth along with life, and light the path away from strife. But like all things, the day must end, at twilight, night once more begins. The moon returns for all to see, and turns the tides in gentle ease. A wolf now howls as others rest, It hunts for prey, survival’s test. However, the sounds will cease, As sun rises in the East. Midnight mist and morning fire;Moon’s calm grace and sun’s desire, Both essential to creation, For life and love and inspiration.

Everything was falling,It was falling so fast.No one to catch me, I shattered like glass. Then you came out of no where,Straight from the sky,Grabbing my hand,You taught me to fly.

Straight From The Heart ContinuedI Wanna Be

I wanna be your sunshine to your rainy day,the color of your paper that takes away the Grey.I wanna be the last person you think about at night, your favorite star that you say shines the most bright.I wanna be the first person you think about at dawn, the girl that you’d die for if the next day i was gone.I wanna be that girl you point at and say that’s her,the girl you can see yourself with forever and be for sure.I wanna be that girl that you say means the world and more, the girl you’re willing to tell yours friends I’m yours.I wanna the that girl that you’d love forever, the girl you want to marry and nothing means never.I wanna be that girl you’d be willing to call in the middle of the night, just to say you’re sorry if at one point we would fight,I wanna be that girl that you’d hug to show the love you make, the girl you’d do anything for just to show me what we have ain’t fake.I wanna be that girl who you’d hold your hand with tight, just to make me feel like we can be one, that you’ll love me with all your mightI wanna be that girl that you’d write a song for even if you can’t sing, just to show me that you’re worth it to what you willing to bring,I wanna be that girl you show that you’re always going to care, that you’d run a thousand miles just to show you’d always be there,I wanna be that girl you can talk to because you can, just to show me you can open up and can act like a man,Boy, I wanna be that girl you say is your one in one million, the girl you’d say is your one in one billion,All I really want to be is your beautiful everything..but I know you just see me as just an ordinary girl.

Friends

We all have that special friendwho listens to ourproblems and difficulties.Who makes life a biteasier by just being thereReaching outSharing doubtWhen life gets you downHaving that special bondbetween friendsA bond that timecannot break. We all need someoneTo talk to in our life,A friend to whom we runIn times of stress or strifeWhen I am angry, you are there to soothemy aggression. And when I am sad,you are there to cheer me up.For everythingand all that you do,I want you to knowI’ll do the same for you. You’ve been a true friendI hope you stayI would be so very emptyIf you ever went away.
