Editing techniques

Wipe: one picture wiping off another picture

Editing techniques

Superimposition or a “super”: placing one image over another.

Ricky Telg Video instructor

Editing techniques

Key: two-source effect where a foreground image is cut into a background image and filled back in with itself.  (Example: chroma key : cuts a given

color out and replaces it with another visual.)

A- & B-Roll

Terms from the film days.  B-roll is the visuals.  A-roll carries the voice.

Aesthetics of editing

Content and program flow  Pacing  Continuity  Scene transitions

Content and program flow

Contextual flow of the program.  The flow of ideas in a program is

normally determined by the script.  Editor has discretion in some instances.

Pacing

Speed or timing or rhythm of a program.

To maintain interest, pacing must be brisk.

Instructional use of television requires that the audience be given sufficient time to absorb new information.

Continuity  Each shot (edit) within a scene must connect to the shots preceding and following it.

Scene transitions: Cuts vs. effects

Cuts: simplest, cleanest and most unobtrusive transitions available.

Dissolves: program changes.  Examples, changes in time, location

Special effects: wipes and other techniques, mainly digital effects

Editing – In the camera  Could be all you need: A quick interview

or tour of a place that brings the person or location to your audience

Takes a little prior planning  If a tour, perhaps coordinate how you’ll travel

through the area  Tip: Try starting the angle of each new scene

a little differently than the shot that precedes it  If an interview, confirm your audio is good and

consider ambient noise or loud areas.

Editing  The art of putting it all together: Good

editing is helped by good planning.  How complex of an editing program?

Very basic to very powerful programs available

What features do you really need?  Software can be fun, or hard, to learn  Do you have time to learn new software?  Can your computer run the software?

Editing - Software  Considerations:

Relatively easy to learn and use  Do you need it to do more than the software that

comes with shoot-and-share cameras?  Can it easily trim and edit video?  Add titles and effects?  Good, easy-to-follow tutorials?  Demo available?  Customer support?  Community forum?
