1st European country to settle Canada was France Jacques Cartier traveled up St. Lawrence River

1608: Samuel de Champlain establishes Quebec 1st permanent French settlement in North America
France’s 3 main goals in North America:
1. Wanted to find a water passage across N. America to Asia
2. Develop fish & fur trade 3. Convert Native Americans to Christianity
British enter Canada Begin to take over places such as Nova Scotia
British & French eventually came to blows over Canada French & Indian War 1754-1763
Forced majority of French out of Canada Many French stayed in Quebec
British took control of Canada in 1763 Organized Canada into governmental districts or
provinces Canada has 10 provinces & 3 territories
British North America Act 1867 Gave Canada its own gov’t
Military & foreign policy decisions still made by England Created the Dominion of Canada
1931: Canada seen as an independent country Still subject to some control by United Kingdom
1982: Canada given full independence
Influenced by France, England, & Native Americans
Most Canadians live near southern border
Examples:Quebec: 90% of people speak French, are Roman
Catholic, & follow French laws
Ontario: Most people speak English, are Protestant
Canada still has a large Native American population
Also has an Inuit/Eskimo population
Majority of both populations live in the 3 territories Yukon, Nunavut, & Northwest Territories

¼ of all Canadians live in Quebec Quebec center of French-Canadian culture
Examples of French culture in Quebec:1. Road signs written in French
2. All provincial gov’t papers written in French
1. Many French in Quebec feel discrimination Some feel gov’t jobs go to English speaking
individuals
2. Some French in Quebec favor separatismWant to make Quebec an independent country
