PRESIDENT’S Welcome

Welcome everyone to the 2015 Victorian Junior and Senior Lifesaving Championships. These are two very special events on the lifesaving sport calendar and I look forward to witnessing our outstanding lifesaving athlete’s showcase their skills on the beach and in the surf over two weekends.

The State Championships are a great opportunity to celebrate all of the hard work and dedication that our lifesavers embody and these events provide a great test for their fitness, lifesaving skills and sportsmanship.

Firstly I would like to thank both the Warrnambool SLSC for hosting the junior championships and the Ocean Grove SLSC for hosting the seniors.

Thank you to the club Presidents, Michael Owen (Warrnambool SLSC) and Chris Paterson (Ocean Grove SLSC) and their club committees, for their preparation, planning and commitment to present these two significant events for the second year running.

Congratulations to each and every one of our competitors for making it to the State Championships. Your skill, energy, tenacity and team spirit throughout the carnival season is inspiring to us all and I wish you all the very best of luck as your training and efforts over the season come to the fore.

I’d like to recognise and thank everyone who has helped make these events possible. To the coaches, officials, water safety, team managers, supporters, family and friends – we couldn’t do it without you. Your contributions and efforts throughout the season and beyond play a crucial role for all of our lifesavers and without this support, events like these simply could not take place.

To the officials who will spend a two full days each weekend from dawn ‘til dusk on the beach, we are all indebted to you.

Thanks are also due to all the sponsors who continue to support the individual clubs and athletes and lifesaving in general, and to the Victorian Government who have supported and partnered with us all.

Finally, thank you to the Life Saving Victoria staff who have committed not only their day jobs to lifesaving, but often their weekends and nights as well.

To all of the competitors, I wish you good luck and I hope you all have a fantastic weekend both in Warrnambool and Ocean Grove.

Now, let the competition begin!

On behalf of Life Saving Victoria and the Aquatic Sports Council

I would like to welcome competitors, officials, coaches, team

managers, guests and sponsors to the 2015 Victorian Lifesaving

Championships.

I would like to congratulate the Warrnambool SLSC and Ocean

Grove SLSC on again being selected as the Host Clubs for the

Junior and Senior Victorian Championships. I would like to also

take this opportunity to congratulate both clubs for their co-

operation and motivation in hosting the 2014 Championships and

this has continued with the preparation for the respective 2015

Championships.

I would like to thank all the LSV staff members involved in this

year’s Championships and appreciate their efforts in providing their

support and event management skills to ensure the best possible

outcome for our members.

Since the 2014 Junior and Senior Victorian Championships we have

had a very active period. Over the 2014 winter months we have held

a number of IRB competitions around the coast culminating with a

very successful IRB Victorian Championships hosted by 13th Beach

SLSC at their beach, but unfortunately due to sea conditions the

second day of competition had to be transferred to Lorne. I would

like to thank the 13th Beach SLSC for hosting these Championships

and the Lorne Club for allowing 13th Beach to use the Club House

facilities on the second day.

The Junior and Senior Pool competitions were also held during the

winter months with successful Junior and Senior Victorian Pool

Championships held at Watermarc Aquatic Centre, Greensborough.

On behalf of the LSV Aquatic Sports Council I would like to promote

and encourage the Pool competition to our Clubs and their members.

This is a competition area which we believe our Victorian Clubs and

members can and do excel in including at Australian Championship

level. This competition is also a gateway for our competitors to make

Australian Teams as we are not restricted by climate when it comes

to training. The dates for the 2015 Pool Season have been circulated.

The Aquatic Sport Pool Panel are also working on ways to arrange for

the training and coaching of the Clubs to introduce them to the Pool

Competition.

This season has seen a successful junior and senior Summer Surf

Series. We have tried to introduce some changes to improve the

running of these carnivals and would like to receive any feedback

and recommendations on how we can continue to improve these

events. A successful Victorian Masters Championship was once again

held at Lorne. Other successful events were the Victorian Champion

Lifesaver, Patrol Competition, and First Aid Championships hosted

by the South Melbourne LSC. We would like to thank the Clubs for

hosting these events along with competitors, officials and IRB crews

for their efforts at all these events.

Our Victorian State Teams have competed successfully at the various

National Championships over the past year. At the 2014 Australian

IRB Championships held at Cudgen Headland SLSC during July 2014

our Victorian IRB Team finished second, a fantastic result from all

involved! The 2015 Southern States Challenge was hosted by LSV

at the Torquay Beach and Geelong Grammar, and once again, our

Junior Development Team were successful in winning the Southern

States Development Challenge At the 2015 RLSSA Australian Pool

Life Saving Championships held in Hobart during January 2015

we finished third overall with some fantastic individual results. At

the 2015 SLSA National Ocean/Beach Interstate Championships

(this year the Pool component will be held as a separate event)

held during January 2015 at Newport in Sydney we finished 4th

overall. At the 2015 Surf Boat Interstate Championships held at

Shellharbour, NSW we finished ?? On behalf of the LSV Aquatic

Sports Council and Executive could I compliment all competitors,

coaches and managers associated with these Teams for their efforts

and contributions.

Again this year we have seen a number of new officials attend

Officials Courses and I thank these members for volunteering and

getting involved. Even with the influx of these new Officials we are

continuing to struggle with getting suitably qualified Officials at our

various competition carnivals involving beach, IRB and pool. We

would like to encourage more members to get involved and become

Officials. It is a great way of making sure our sport continues to

develop. We are seeing Clubs develop their coaches and competitors

and we encourage this, but we would also like to encourage Clubs to

get their members involved in becoming qualified officials.

I would like to thank all of our partners for their support, especially

the Victorian Government, City of Greater Geelong, Warrnambool

City Council, Engine Swimwear and Charger Surf Craft.

Finally I would once again like to thank our hard working officials, IRB

Drivers and Crew, Water Safety, and First Aid personal who do a great

job and without their contribution our Sports Carnivals would not be

the success they are.

Regards,

Allan Holmes

Victorian Titles 2015 President’s Welcome – Chris Paterson

On behalf of the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club’s members and committee, I would like to welcome you back to the Bellarine for the 2015 Victorian Surf Lifesaving Championships. After the fantastic conditions at last years event we are looking forward to again partnering with Life Saving Victoria to deliver another memorable titles. As one of the biggest and most popular clubs in Victoria, Ocean Grove SLSC has always taken pride in its beach and the ability of the club to provide a consistent service to the community via its life saving services as well as a strong social, competition and junior development program.

Hopefully this will be the final time many of you experience the Ocean Grove Surf Beach Complex in its current state. As some of you may already know, the club has been working with State and Federal Government, City of Greater Geelong, Life Saving Victoria, DEPI and Barwon Coast on major renovation and extension plans for the building, which celebrates its 20 anniversary this year. Current timelines have the facility closing for these works from May 2016 and we look forward to welcoming you back to a brand new facility some time after that.

We appreciate the support of Life Saving Victoria in again preparing for this event and the support and assistance given by the City of Greater Geelong and Barwon Coast Committee of Management.

I would also like to acknowledge the great work done by our organising team and Committee of Management in assisting in the planning and implementation of the event.

Please enjoy the hospitality of Ocean Grove SLSC and have a great weekend of competition and camaraderie.

Victorian Junior Lifesaving Championships 2014President’s Welcome – Michael Owen

On behalf of Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club I would like to welcome competitors, their families, coaches, officials and all involved in Life Saving Victoria.

It is a great honour for Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club to host the 2015 Victorian Junior Lifesaving Championships on this wonderful beach following the success of last year’s event.

Our Club and General Committee are supporting our Junior State Titles committee, headed up by Alan Aulesbrook. They have worked in conjunction with Life Saving Victoria to present an excellent event for everyone to participate in.

These events are the result of a lot of hard work by our members. It is very satisfying to witness the cooperation of so many of our club members working to facilitate the staging of these successful events whilst not losing the objective of a safe environment for the beach going public.

We appreciate the partnership with Life Saving Victoria and the Warrnambool City Council who has been very supportive and helpful to our Victorian Junior Championships Committee in preparation for this event.

To our many club sponsors and supporters, our ongoing appreciation for your contributions towards the success of our club this season and we look forward to your continuing support.

The Victorian Government is delighted to welcome competitors, spectators, officials and volunteers to the 2015 Victorian Lifesaving Championships.

Lifesavers contribute many voluntary hours to ensure we all enjoy the beach and I would like to especially acknowledge their contribution and dedication.

In addition to welcoming the competitors and wishing them success for their respective events, I would also like to acknowledge the team officials and judges involved in the Victorian Championships, who have also contributed many hours.

Events such as the 2015 Victorian Lifesaving Championships continue to be important in increasing local participation and encouraging sport in our local communities. The Victorian Government has contributed to the funding of this event through the Significant Sporting Events Program.

I encourage everyone to come along to this event and enjoy the many good things that regional Victoria has to offer.

Congratulations to everyone involved in staging and supporting these championships.

I wish all competitors the best of luck.

MAYORS’ Messages

On behalf of the City of Greater Geelong I would like to welcome you to the 2015 Victorian Life Saving Championships in beautiful Ocean Grove.

It’s going to be a cracking weekend full of traditional lifesaving events including surf boats, escue and Resuscitation, and Ironman/Ironwoman competitions.

The Victorian Life Saving Championships always attract large participation numbers and this year we’re expecting over 800 athletes.

Approximately 35 clubs have signed up for the Championships and what an event it will be!

Geelong is becoming a sporting capital. Over summer we have been host to the Festival of Sails, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race and the Oates Victorian Open Golf Championships.

I do hope you enjoy your time on the Bellarine. Make sure you also visit our Waterfront precinct, CBD and enjoy the award winning restaurants and cafes spread across the region.

All the best in the competition!

Giddy Up!

Cr Darryn LyonsMayor, City of Greater Geelong

Welcome to Warrnambool.

We’re thrilled to be hosting the Victorian Junior Lifesaving Championships and hope that all competitors, their families and supporters have a great time while here in Warrnambool.

There’s plenty to enjoy about the championships. They’re about being fit and active and of course we have a growing appreciation of how important that is for both physical and mental health and wellbeing. There’s also the water safety theme for everyone to contemplate and the championships provide a great spectacle for those who enjoy watching a full-on action sport.

It’s just possible that the championships might inspire more people – young and not so young – to don bathers or a wetsuit and head for the surf. I’d also like to acknowledge the work of volunteer lifesavers and the efforts of the volunteers who have helped make the championships possible. We’re fortunate to have such a beautiful beach at our doorstep that is ideal for this event. To have Lady Bay and our surf beach showcased by the championships is a bonus for Warrnambool and the Great South Coast region.

So, best of luck to all competitors and stay safe. I hope we’re lucky enough to score some sunny days and we look forward to a wonderful competition and to everyone returning in 2015.

Cr Michael NeohMayor, Warrnambool City Council

Life Saving Victoria today presented Geelong Leisurelink rescuers with “Everyday Lifesaver” awards, congratulating them on their quick actions.

In September Geelong Leisurelink member Garry Simpson suffered from a heart attack while swimming laps at the centre and has recently returned to the pool to thank the team that saved his life.

Four of the centre’s lifeguards – Peter Claffey, Ashlea Smith, Imogen Brough and Lee Murray together with off-duty fire fighter Justin Craven were awarded as “Everyday Lifesavers” at the reunion, for their quick actions to save Mr Simpson’s life.

Lifeguard Ashlea Smith spotted Mr Simpson appearing to be having a seizure in the 25 metre deep lap swimming pool and quickly alerted her colleagues for assistance.

Ms Smith and Mr Claffey recovered the unconscious Mr Simpson from the water using a spinal board.

Upon discovering that he wasn’t breathing, Mr Claffey commenced resuscitation as fellow lifeguards Ashlea Smith and Imogen Brough recovered and applied an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), while Lee Murray called 000 and met paramedics.

Off duty fire fighter Justin Craven, also offered his service and provided assistance with CPR compressions.

The team performed CPR, applied the defibrillator and delivered one shock before MICA paramedics arrived and took over treatment.

Mr Simpson is believed to have been clinically dead for approximately 40 minutes before being revived and stabilised at the centre.

He was then transported to hospital in Geelong, where he was admitted to intensive care.

Mr Simpson spent four days in hospital following the heart attack and has since made full recovery.

GEELONG LEISURELINK LIFEGUARDS RECOGNISED AS “Everyday Lifesavers”

Page 11: Victorian life saving championships 2015

“I am so thankful for the staff on hand at Leisurelink. The team were fully prepared. They were ready for action. They truly saved my life,” Mr Simpson said.

Life Saving Victoria Manager Commercial Services Andy Dennis who presented the “Everyday Lifesaver” awards said that this was a terrific team effort to a critical situation.

“Providing first aid quickly, before emergency responders arrive, can make the difference between life and death,” Mr Dennis said.

“Resuscitation is all about early access, early CPR and early defibrillation. Being able to provide this treatment before paramedics arrive can increase chances of survival significantly.”

“Emergencies like this can happen everyday, so we encourage all Victorians to become “Everyday Lifesavers” by doing training in first aid and CPR.”

“You are also particularly vulnerable if you are in the water if a medical emergency like a heart attack occurs.”

“That’s why it is so important never to swim alone and wherever possible, to swim at a pool or patrolled beach where lifeguards are not only looking out for you in the water, but also trained to act quickly in an emergency,” Mr Dennis said.

City of Greater Geelong Councillor Jock Irvine who holds a portfolio for Sport & Recreation is thrilled to recognise local Geelong heroes.

“Incidents such as these show just how important and how vital basic first aid knowledge skills are,” Cr Irvine said.

“I am glad our talented lifeguards at Leisurelink were on hand and prepared with the adequate training and skills needed to save a life.”

“I applaud these local heroes for their efforts and I urge more Geelong residents to complete first aid training,”

I owe all of my accomplishments to him

What are your interests outside of lifesaving? Being a mother to my two year old son, rugby

COACHESCAMDixonHalf Moon Bay

How long have you been involved in lifesaving? I have been involved in surf since 1992 as a competitor in the open ranks and finished competing seriously in 2001, we moved to Dubai for five years in 2004 and while working there I started a nipper programme for expats (mainly Aussie, Kiwi and South African) as an introduction to the sport of lifesaving. When we moved back to Melbourne my son was old enough to start competing in Nippers which is where I find myself now.

What’s your favourite event/Discipline? As a swimmer my favourite events were the Belt Swim and Board rescue. My favourite team event was and is the Taplin relay, like the Aqua Cameron Relay in Nippers the Taplin Relay shows both teamwork and depth of talent in one’s club. Choosing the right competitors in the conditions you are fronted with is vital.

How do you prepare yourself for a day on the beach?Preparation is always done in the days and weeks prior to a race for a larger event like the Vic titles. Organising the list of competitors into events and pre-planning with them race schedules, key events, etc. On the day itself you just have to be prepared for anything, conditions, competitor tiredness / sickness, change in order of events, basically be ready for all of the pre-planning to change on you and have alternatives ready to implement. The hardest thing to deal with on the day are the ‘highs’ and ‘lows’ of the kids, the big smiles are easy to deal with but the tears are hard. Every race is a lesson as you never stop learning in the surf.

What’s your greatest achievement to date in coaching?Passing on my knowledge and experience to the athletes is what it is all about, with life saving being such a unique sport there are not many former competitors in Victoria that hang around in the sport and give back so really whatever I can pass on.

I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching the Junior High Performance squads and Junior Southern State Team for the past two seasons. At HMB I have really enjoyed coaching my sons age group and I think it is wonderful that for the past two Vic titles nearly every one of my nippers has received a medal, such a great bunch of kids!

Who is your role model and why? Probably my old swimming coach, he was a ‘hard task master’ which is how I always approached my races and now as a coach I need to keep telling myself ‘not everyone responds well to this same approach’ but I always expect my athletes to give 100% effort!

What are your interests outside of lifesaving/what do you do during the week? I’m a partner in an Architectural firm which is flat out at times, and when I’m not playing Architect or running around with my son’s sporting activities, I still keep fit and compete in some open surf carnivals and the surf masters at both Vic’s and Aussies.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about getting involved in coaching? It is very rewarding to watch the athletes growth, but always listen to others as we as coaches never stop learning too.

Aims for 2015? Youth Aussies – I want to make a big push to get as many of our nippers training and working harder so we are not just competitive at the Aussies but making finals.

Favourite thing about Lifesaving Events? Anything can happen in the surf, those that read the surf best usually win but now and then you can get lucky with a wave and their the races you remember the longest.

Event(s) to watch at this year’s Vic titles? I love to watch the board rescue because a lot can happen after the pickup, team work, reading the conditions, waves, you can go from first to last or vice-versa before the race is done.

Favourite QuotesMuhammad Ali - “Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them—a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.”

And the second a lot simpler from my swimming coach as a teenager – Respect All, Fear None.

Page 21: Victorian life saving championships 2015

PAULTaylorMordialloc

How long have you been involved in lifesaving? 15 years

What’s your favourite event/Discipline? Beach Relay and any event I can watch my son Matthew compete in. He’s a water athlete so I don’t watch as much of his races as I would like.

How do you prepare yourself for a day on the beach? Run though the check list, pack early and try to get an early night beforehand. Get to the beach early.

What’s your greatest achievement to date in coaching?   Playing my small part in helping the club (first bay club) win the 2014 Vic Champs. Also working closely with the head Beach coach Brian Dolly to create an environment where athletes of all abilities can achieve their personal best.  The Aussie medals are a (great) bonus.

Who is your role model and why?  No specific person, but people like the late Tom Hafey who  worked hard and have a positive outlook on life. If it is to be, it’s up to me.

What are your interests outside of lifesaving/what do you do during the week? Is there time outside of lifesaving to have other interests? Mainly work, home life and trying to increase my general knowledge.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about getting involved in coaching? Start now. Get qualified and always continue to increase your knowledge from those in the know. It’s a lot of work but very rewarding in ways you won’t believe.

Aims for 2015? Ongoing improvement in all the athletes to achieve their potential, and to continue to play my part in building an environment where athletes can achieve their goals.

Favourite thing about Lifesaving Events?    Being involved with positive people whilst providing a community service. When the suns out life can be pretty good..

Event(s) to watch at this year’s Vic titles? Any event in which the Mordialloc LSC competes in, especially the beach events.

Favourite Quote?“Effort is controllable, results are not”. And, “vision without execution is hallucination”.

JONFordPoint Leo

How long have you been involved in lifesaving? 10 years not including a brief stint at Anglesea many years ago!

What’s your favourite event/Discipline?  Iron and ski with my background in international flat water kayaking

How do you prepare yourself for a day on the beach?  Careful consideration of teams to get the best result for the club and all athletes.  Psyching myself to get up at 4am so we can reach the West Coast in time to do an effective warm up!

What’s your greatest achievement to date in coaching?  Developing the coaches and program for a complete and year round training schedule for all levels of athletes at our club.  Helping Bella Ford reach the U19 ski final at Aussies last year .

Who is your role model and why? Phil Clayton has been an inspiration in terms of engaging the squad with what is required to succeed as well as the importance of an organised and carefully planned program.  After witnessing Ali Day at a training camp last weekend I have become a big fan of his positive methods of communicating with young people!

What are your interests outside of lifesaving/what do you do during the week?  I run a research team and group of multi-disciplinary practices helping people with chronic back pain.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about getting involved in coaching? Some experience competing in the sport helps to understand what is required by athletes (its never too late to start with Masters).  There are so many resources and people out there who can help - find them and learn from their experience.  Be organised and develop the people around you (coaches and athletes).

Aims for 2015?  Improve Point Leo’s ranking at States and to help some of our top end athletes make individual finals at Aussies.

Favourite thing about Lifesaving Events?  The unpredictable nature of the sport; anything can happen.  The opportunity for coaches and athletes to better themselves through sport and working as a team.

Event(s) to watch at this year’s Vic titles?  U19 female iron, U19 female ski and hopefully some new talent in our open mens taplin!

Favourite Quote?“As a coach I’ve gotta spend more time researching quotes” by Jon Ford

COACH

Ocean Grove How long have you been involved in lifesaving?  30 years this year

How do you prepare yourself for a day on the beach?Get organised the night before. Pack the food, a range of clothes for all seasons, print the carnival program and the selected teams a number of times for kids that forget to print theirs as well as some for my family. Check the surf conditions and send out a good luck text usually to the squad.

Greatest coaching achievement to dateThere are quite a few....getting my own children to Australian finals and coaching them throughout their time racing. As for the kids I coach.....I love seeing an athlete get the results they deserve be it winning a pennant, winning a state medal individual or team race, or just making a final.....it’s all good and part of the sport.

Who is your role model and why?A swim coach I once had Alec Urquart....who passed away many years ago....taught me by the way he coached to treat everyone the same in your squad regardless of what their abilities were. Not to concentrate just on the champion as they are easy to coach and will always to well. To be successful is when everyone feels part of the group. And even when he was yelling and cursing as he did often, we always knew that he loved us all but he was just passionate about our racing. I think my style has turned out a bit like him.

Interests out of surf life savingPhys ed teacher at Geelong high school, free surf when I have time, play guitar and read a fair bit. Don’t have much free time really during the season and while I am working.

Advice for someone wanting to get involved in coaching: You need to love kids and be in it for them not for yourself. Obviously you need to have a love of the sport and be willing to stand up for what you believe in regardless of what others say. And also be willing for it to take up many many hours of your life if you want your athletes to succeed.

Aims for 2015?I’m not worried about the point score system as it just flogs the kids and they give it away. I want to concentrate on the youth of the club as we have a heap at Ocean Grove and I would like to see them stick around for the future. There is a new young group going to Aussies so I would like to see them have a positive experience. As well as this I would obviously like the kids to do well at Vics ......get a few team medals and some individual ones as well. As long as they have a good season, learn something and are ready to front up next year and work harder again, my job is done.

Favourite thing about surf lifesavingAs long as you are up there you have a chance of winning or doing well at a carnival. It’s a healthy lifestyle where you learn skills that could save someone’s life....that has to be a good thing. Also the friends that you make and all ages and both sexes mixing together....gotta love the sport!!!!

Events to watch at this years vic titlesAll of them but it won’t happen as now it is broken up into 3 areas I always miss something. The junior races are always good and more focus should be placed on them I think, taplin maybe as some kids have raced all weekend and done a heap of racing and still manage a great race at the end of the weekend.

Favourite quote? It used to be ...no pain no gain, but the kids I coach gave me a t shirt for Xmas with a new quote .....Soni’s way or the highway!!! So that’s my new one....

Half Moon Bay

How long have you been involved in lifesaving? Joined Half Moon Bay when I was about 14, 30+ years ago. Back then there was only about a dozen members with an average age of about 16yo.

What’s your favourite event/Discipline? I have competed in all disciplines including beach, ski board, surf boat, IRB, pool. I was never that good at any discipline and never really won anything until I competed at Masters. Favourite event is the Taplin or Cameron Relay as they are a true team event.

How do you prepare for a day on the beach?Usually a few days out checking the event lists, time and weather. Packing the day before is really important and being on the beach well before the event start to check the conditions.

What’s your greatest achievement to date in officiating? This year as Carnival Referee at Torquay Cosy Corner - State Junior Carnival was a great day. Everything went really well including the weather. Having a great team in every age group is very important to the success of the event.

Who is your role model and why?  Steve Seddon is an inspiration to me. He joined HMB at the same time I did and has been very focused on his training and competition while still working the coal face on the committee

What are your interests outside of lifesaving/what do you do during the week? Apart from lifesaving other sports I love is cycling (road and mountain) I have three sons which keep me busy with all their sports such as football, cricket and rowing

What advice do you have for someone thinking about getting involved in officiating? I started officiating in about 2006 when my son first started Nippers. I enjoy it because you get to witness that action close up. Being involved can be very challenging however it is also rewarding and you get to meet some great people all across the country.

Aims for 2015? My aim this year is to advance my skills as an Official. Also to implement some changes to the competition to benefit all competitors and officials.

Favourite thing about Lifesaving Events? You never know what you are going to get. Conditions play a big part in the results and it doesn’t matter who you are you have a chance. Sometimes it’s the luck of the surf but the more you train the luckier you get

Event(s) to watch at this year’s Vic titles?I always love to watch a surf boat race in difficult conditions however my focus will be on my sons in the U17 Ski and U14 board

CHRISTINECardwellSouth Melbourne LSC

How long have you been involved in lifesaving? 38 years

What’s your favourite event/Discipline? Two and five person Rescue & Resuscitation, but also like Surf races, Board Rescue and Champion Lifesaver Event

How do you prepare for a day on the beach?Try to get an early night, have judging panels and judging cards prepared. Cap, zinc and water in my bag.

What’s your greatest achievement to date in officiating? Since judging Rescue & Resuscitation at national level, about 15 years ago, I have always been selected on the Finals Judging Panel.

Who has been Mentors to you over the years with officiating? When I initially started officiating I was in the Water Area, with the late Fred Leiper from Ocean Grove. Being only one of a handful of female officials at that time (late 80’s) Fred ensured that I was given every opportunity to experience all roles of officiating. He treated me equally and with respect. He was consistent and fair to all competitors; a true role model, great mentor and along with Alan Dell from Torquay we had some fun as well as running an efficient area.

After finishing competing in my own right I went into the R&R area where Geoff Waters has been a continual wealth of information and experience and not just in the field of R&R. He has been an inspiration - to have someone so committed to an event. Geoff was the one that encouraged me to start judging R&R at a National Level and I haven’t looked back.

What are your interests outside of lifesaving/what do you do during the week? During the week I work part time at a Primary School, then am taxi driver for my son to numerous sports training and events. In winter love watching my son play junior football as well being Trainer for his team.

My interests outside of lifesaving are travel, swimming, cooking, drinking good wine and having long dinners with friends.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about getting involved in officiating?Be prepared to listen, know the rules and be consistent.

Aims for 2015? To continue to assist in running an efficient and fair area for the all R&R competitors and continue to mentor other officials to the best of my ability in both junior and senior competition.

Favourite thing about Lifesaving Events? Fitness and skill.

Event(s) to watch at this year’s Vic titles? U/17 Rescue & Resuscitation and U/17 Men’s Belt Race

Favourite Quote:“It’s not the will to win that matters – everyone has that.

Anglesea Surf Lifesaving Club hosted a surf camp on Thursday 8 January for 32 multicultural community members to teach participants about water safety and increase aquatic participation locally.

It was run in conjunction with “The Huddle”, a joint initiative of the North Melbourne Football Club, the Scanlon Foundation and the Australian Multicultural Foundation, that targets youths from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

25 children aged 6 – 18 years and seven parents participated in the camp, each from various cultural backgrounds including refugees from Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea, and a number of immigrants from Vietnam.

Anglesea SLSC member Malcom Plant said the camp was a huge success in engaging their local culturally and linguistically diverse community and assisting them to become more aware and involved in lifesaving.

“The camp was the first opportunity for many of these kids to experience a beach and many of the younger ones were so excited, they hadn’t slept for days,” he said.

“The day was structured to provide each individual with an introduction to beach safety and equipment that is used by lifesavers. Participants had the chance to take part in water based activities including swimming and the use of some rescue boards, before heading to Urquharts Bluff for a surfing lesson donated by Go-Ride-A-Wave.

“These activities were closely supervised by a group of Anglesea SLSC water safety volunteers, who said it was a heart-warming experience. Parents and kids who participated in the program said it was a great day.”

The program also received funding through Life Saving Victoria as part of VicHealth’s State Sporting Associations Participation Project, with the main goal being to increase water safety knowledge and aquatic participation by multicultural communities in Victoria.

Several other clubs received this funding including Brighton, Jan Juc, Lakes Entrance and Point Leo.

LSV Manager Multicultural Services David Holland said this is fantastic opportunity, which not only aids diversity, but helps make beaches safer.

“As Victoria’s population has steadily increased over time, so has the cultural diversity and makeup of the people within it. Unfortunately many of these CALD community members have not received water safety education or swimming education that is so important to their safety, particularly those who have lived in Australia for 10 years or less.

“The development of these groups not only benefits the individuals on a social and physical level, but also provides vital role models from within the CALD community to encourage others to more easily consider the same.”

With people living in regional Victoria almost twice as likely to drown as those in major cities, Life Saving Victoria’s Open Water Learning Experience (OWLE) program travelled inland to teach water safety to over 3000 students in their local waterways.

Over three weeks from 2 – 20 February, LSV education instructors visited students from 62 regional schools in Wodonga, Yarrawonga, Bright, Wangaratta, Shepparton, Echuca, Bendigo, Horsham, Mildura, Swan Hill, and Cohuna, to equip them with water safety skills, including how to assist others in an emergency.

LSV Aquatic Education Services Coordinator Laura Parkins said the Open Water Learning Experience provides vital knowledge to ensure students understand the potential dangers found in and around regional waterways.

“Sadly there were 22 drowning incidents in inland waterways last financial year (1 July 2013 – 30 June 2014), she said.

“LSV aims to address this issue by empowering children with the knowledge on how to be water ready when in and around their local waterway.

“Inland waterways and conditions change every day. Practical strategies, such as identifying dangers and reading key safety signs, all work to ensure students have the tools to ‘be aware and prepared’ and help prevent drowning incidents.”

With a focus on what to do in an emergency and a wide range of age-appropriate and engaging real life scenarios, Ms Parkins hopes the program creates Everyday Lifesavers.

“Experience shows that teaching students what to do in an emergency at a young age, including the emergency response sequence DRSABCD, can have a major impact on their actions if they are ever faced with an emergency situation,” she said.

“We also teach safe rescue strategies to ensure participants not only have the confidence and skills to help someone in trouble, but also to ensure they don’t put themselves in danger.”

NEXT WORKSHOP MAY 2015

Surf Life Saving’s hand is up in the biggest national fundraising campaign in its 107-year history.

Launched on Sunday 28 December 2014, 60 lifesavers from around Australia are the faces of the campaign, including Torquay SLSC member Mia Tiatapanui, reinforcing the message that Surf Life Saving is a community service that is about its people.

Surf Life Saving Australia President Graham Ford said the campaign was part of a long-term strategy to raise not only funds, but also awareness of and for the lifesaving movement nationally.

“We know that not everyone has the time or desire to be a patrolling member, but now everyone has a chance to be a life saver. When the community donates, they help us to keep the beaches safe,” he said.

“The lifesavers on our beaches are everyday Australians doing extraordinary things. They help us to train people in rescue and resuscitation, first aid and emergency care. By donating they are directly contributing to our cause of saving lives.”

In 2013-14, more than 47,000 patrolling members at 312 Life Saving clubs performed 1.2 million volunteer patrol hours nationally.

Coastal drowning deaths were reduced by 29 per cent on the previous year.

Lifesaving patrolling members performed 11,711 rescues (32 per day), 31,893 first aid treatments (87 per day) and 1,016,037 preventative actions (2,784 per day).

Surf Life Saving wants Australian families to be able to enjoy our beaches in the knowledge they will be safe because a surf lifesaver is keeping an eye on them.

Victoria’s elite athletes faced off against interstate rivals at the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships in Hobart, 16 – 18 January, ahead of Surf Life Australia’s Interstate Championships in Sydney, 23 January.

RLSSA Pool Lifesaving Championships Hobart Aquatic Centre, Tasmania

An overall podium finish, three individual overall age group champions, two Masters World Records and a Victorian athlete named ‘2015 Lifesaver of the Meet’, were among the accolades for the Victorian State and Development Teams.

Victoria finished third overall on 948 points with interstate rivals New South Wales taking home state glory on 1080 and Queensland just 40 points behind on 1040.

Highlights included: • Alec Hende (Black Rock LSC) being crowned the Men’s

U14 Individual Overall Champion and Drew Green (Jan Juc SLSC) and Thomas Dale (Mentone LSC) in equal second place.

• Madison Howe (Point Leo SLSC) won the Women’s U14 Individual Overall Champion, with Caitlyn Huell (Altona LSC) in second place.

• Lisa Ferguson (Mordialloc LSC) breaking two World Records in Masters

• James Petropoulos (Mordialloc LSC) placing second in the Men’s U16 Individual Overall Championship

• Samantha Howe (Point Leo SLSC) being awarded the 2015 Lifesaver of the Meet, for the most outstanding competitor for the weekend.

Head Coach James Evans said the Victorian team did a great job and he is already looking forward to next year’s competition.

“It was another fantastic weekend at the Pool Championships, the event was run very well and everyone who attended had an absolute ball,” he said.

“All of the Victorian team demonstrated exceptional lifesaving skills and athleticism. Their efforts were excellent, with many Personal Bests achieved making us all extremely proud.”

SLSA Interstate Championships, Newport SLSC, Sydney

In a close fight to the finish New South Wales came out victorious on 828 points, ahead of Queensland rivals on 823 and Western Australia third on 565. Victoria finished fourth overall with a final score of 472.

Team Victoria was made up of the state’s top 24 lifesaving athletes including several promising U17 youth members and ‘State of Origin’ athletes Harriet Brown, James Porter, Kira Kinsey, Ryan Bedford and Campbell McDonald.

Led by Victoria’s greatest ever Ironwoman Harriet Brown (ex-Ocean Grove SLSC, now based on the Gold Coast) and Tom Penney from Anglesea SLSC, LSV Coordinator Senior Aquatic Sport Tom Mitchell said Victoria put up a strong fight in challenging conditions.

“It was probably some of the biggest surf that we’ve seen at the Interstates in recent years, and it was great to see the best athletes from around the country being put through their paces,” he said.

In a first for the Interstate Championships, each of the seven state/territory teams had the opportunity to nominate two “Powerplay” events (one each in open and youth), to be worth double points.

It paid early dividends for Victoria with Harriet Brown beating an all-star Ironwoman field to snare the maximum quota of points possible.

“It was great to be racing again for Victoria and to be a part of the Victorian team. I had a little bit of pressure on me because it was our Powerplay event, so I was really hoping to do well in that race so I’m very pleased with it,” Brown said.

Other highlights included both Ryan Bedford (Open) and Saxon Beale (Youth) coming second in their beach flag events. Mr Bedford was also a very close second in his sprint.

With these two events complete Mr Mitchell is looking forward to the Australian Lifesaving Championships in April.

“The recent interstate competitions have provided a great test for our athletes and it will be interesting to see their progress when they faceoff again at the Aussies,” he said.

Visit Life Saving Victoria’s website for the full results and write up of each event.

TOP ATHLETES COMPETE IN Interstate Championships

It has been a fantastic season of surf boat rowing in Victoria, which has seen many crews build on the success of past years. Over 50 different crews have taken part in carnivals this season.

The Navy VSRL series kicked kicked off on Saturday 8 November 2014 at Rosebud & McCrae LSC. This was an apt venue, as the host club is quickly becoming a powerhouse of Victorian surf boat rowing.

The Victorian Masters Championships and VSRL Open/ LSV Summer Series #5 at Lorne SLSC was a highlight on the Victorian calendar. Over 20 masters crews competed on the Saturday and over 50 crews competed on the Sunday at the VSRL Open.

Congratulations to our crews who represented Victoria at the Navy ASRL Open Interstate competition, 20 - 22 February 2015.

The crews that represented their state are listed below, along with the position they finished in their division at the Interstate. With Conrad Pearson (team manager) and Lara Jeffrey (team captain) at the helm, Victoria finished 4th overall.
