Sunday, september 12 is locked away as the second preliminary final, but its importance stretches

beyond which team will advance to the VFL grand Final.

It’s also the day scheduled for the `Young Guns’ match, an exciting initiative that further showcases the burgeoning talent in Victoria. The game will be played as a curtain- raiser to the preliminary final at TEAC Oval.

While previously there has been an under-21 or under-23 match played sporadically during a season, the Young Guns match embraces players not only confined to the VFL.

Invitations will be extended to young VFL players whose clubs’ finals commitments have finished as well as 19-year-olds who play in the TAC Cup. TAC Cup players who did not play in the recent NAB AFL Under-18 Championships will also receive invitations.

Further invitations will be issued to nominated young players from

both the Victoria Amateur Football Association and Victorian Country Football League representative teams.

Why have players from other leagues been invited? Why not?

One of AFL Victoria’s charters is to grow, nurture and develop the game throughout the state. This match is an extension of that philosophy.

It must be remembered that Michael Barlow graduated from representative country football to the VFL and, of course, to the AFL.

AFL clubs will be asked to nominate players they would like to watch under perhaps the most challenging environment in which they’ve played.

Clearly the more exposure a young player can gain will only enhance his development.

Already, we have witnessed a young player, Jarryd Blair, a former Morrish Medal winner, showcase his skill in the VFL state representative match against Western Australia to be upgraded from the rookie list to play good football for Collingwood in the AFL.

What the Young Guns match provides is an opportunity and how many times have we heard players say all they need is a chance.

As previously mentioned, players who may have missed the national championships or endured an early season injury now have an opportunity that otherwise may not have been available, which is a clear benefit of this match.

It provides a meaningful way for young players to gain a greater insight into the progress of their game and, perhaps, audition for a spot on an AFL club list.

Certainly, the Young Guns match will attract scrutiny from all AFL clubs, particularly with the inclusion next year of Gold Coast and the season after Greater Western Sydney.

The day shapes as a welcome inclusion to the football calendar.

taC DeveloPment

Football players appreciate that if you lose someone from your team, it affects the whole team and the

football community. similarly, car crashes have far reaching effects on communities.

The Bannockburn Tigers have felt this recently, with the death of 19-year-old Luke Robinson in a high-speed crash near Geelong. Luke played for the Tigers and his younger brother Jai plays in the under-14s team which is coached by his father Norm.

Jai, Norm and Luke’s mother Leanne have spearheaded a new TAC campaign, talking about the enormous effect of Luke’s death on their life.

Bannockburn Tigers team manager Phil Vicars (pictured) is one of those interviewed in the campaign and Phil’s story is symbolic of the football community and the wide reaching impact of Luke’s death.

More than 200 people were affected by the crash, including family, friends, emergency service workers, eyewitnesses and work colleagues. Many of them have been filmed as part of the campaign, sharing their feelings about losing Luke.

When you consider the ripple effect of this one person’s death, chances are that you or someone you know has been affected by a serious car crash. Nobody benefits from speeding but, as we can see in the case of Luke, so many people can be hurt.

The Robinson family has bravely agreed to share their story to get people to slow down. They want Victorians, particularly young male drivers, to be aware of the ripple effect caused by every death on our roads.

Norm’s message to drivers sums up the point behind the ads: “In the split second before you accelerate over the speed limit, picture your dad, mum, brother, girlfriend, mates . . . and the hundreds of other people you’ll hurt. If you won’t slow down for your own sake, do it for them. Please.”

When you get home from the footy today, get online and find out more about the Robinson’s story: youtube.com/tac.
