PRESIDENT’S NOTES

2011 Season on the Move

The first meeting of our new Executive was held on Monday, April 04. Again this year, each of our many various interest groups is well and ably represented on the Board. We have a willing group of go-getters, each of whom is dedicated to his/her own group, as well as to the smooth operation of our entire Club. We are further blessed by the fact that the outgoing Executive left us an exciting vision of the future with clear and well defined short and long-term plans already in place. An incredible bonus is that many of the people who created this legacy have agreed to serve for another term. A very special THANK-YOU is extended to them, and to our obviously active, innovative newcomers for agreeing to volunteer their time for the good of all of us. This promises to be an exciting, successful year.

Members’ General Meeting

This month’s general meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 18, as announced elsewhere in this newsletter. Troy Desouza, Conservative Candidate for Esqimalt – Juan de Fuca, will arrive before the meeting to meet and greet arriving members. At 7:30 p.m. the general meeting will begin with a few remarks by Troy, followed by a question period.

Life Memberships

Several names have been submitted as candidates for Life Membership awards. There are more deserving people than available awards, so this decision promises to be a challenge for the Executive.

Shooting Experience

We are still being contacted by people who as individuals, or representing a group, want to gain an exposure to shooting - both firearms and, to a lesser extent, archery. Participants in these events are always totally delighted, and we expect this sort of thing to increase dramatically as word gets around. If you would be able to assist in introducing some interested people to your favourite sport, please speak to anyone on the executive. Several requests are already being processed at this time.

Our membership has more than doubled in the last two years, and will likely triple the 2009 figure this year! As a result, your Executive members are getting many, many requests for orientation, tours, and instruction regarding the different disciplines. Up until now, the Standing Committee Reps, who represent the different interests, have been able to stretch their available time, and/or conscript a friend to help provide this service. However, the demand continues to grow, far outstripping the available number of people who are trying to meet this growing need. These newcomers are the future of our Club, and cannot be ignored. If your Executive Rep asks for help, please do your very best to make some time available for this important service.

Orientation Program For those who have made enquiries about how to get to know your new Club, or your chosen activity (which also happens with long-time members who decide to try something new) please contact the Executive Director of the sport you have chosen at: http://vfgpa.org Select the “About Us” link from the top of the page, and then “Executive” from the menu on the left. This may not be a good week to do that, since the Executive Director list is just being revised after last month’s elections. Everything should be done by next week. Your other option is to check the calendar http://vfgpa.org/calendar to find a practice time for the activity you’ve chosen, and just show up. Guaranteed you’ll be welcomed most cordially, and will probably be drawn into the action before you even know what happened! Members are also more than happy to answer your questions.

Fishing

Remember this from last month? “…a fishing experience is also being sought by interested groups. For the most part, these are groups of school children who come to the range to try their hand at archery, but to round out the day's experience we give them a quick lesson in spin casting and the chance to catch a fish…” If you can donate some time during a weekday please e-mail, call, or speak to one of the Executive members.

Happy recreating! Myrna Francis

South Island Action Shooters Report

Our Club Match on Sunday, April 03 attracted 15 shooters, and a few hardy spectators. Many of us suspected that we had accidentally signed up for a sub-arctic survival course, although there was a brief respite in the early afternoon. The Saturday set-up gang offered absolutely NO sympathy, since they endured a hailstorm during their target building and assembling for the match. Unfortunately, few pictures were taken since the photographer was shiv-ering so much that everything was turning out blurry. Sadly, no shots of the fabulous stages designed by Dave Gerow, Tristan Baty, Mike Egan, Nick Newton, and Marty Lee.

RARIN’ TO GO! THE WALK-THROUGH HAS BEGUN!

“NUMERO UNO IN ACTION” – Trevor Hermann ended up to be Top Gun of the day

.

Followed by Trevor, second and third honours were no surprise, either: Dom Piluso followed by Ted Leung. Upstart C-shooter, Nick Newton slipped in among the A’s for fourth spot. This guy is a serious threat!

Next match: Sunday, April 17 is ISL Qualifier #2 at Nanaimo Fish & Game. It will be well worth the trip, as always!

SPRING CLEAN UP & BBQ ON SATURDAY APRIL 16TH, 2011 - 9AM (RAIN OR SHINE)

It’s that time of the year again, it’s been a long winter and we have a few areas of the property that need a little work. Remember that many hands make light work! The detail is expected to only last a couple hours and afterwards there will be a BBQ with refreshments and an opportunity for members to get to know the club and other members! Just bring a pair of gloves and we’ll put you to work. The caretaker and maintenance committee have a list of things to do and organize the event.

Troy Desouza’s campaign is going very well so far, but we need some more volunteers to help out at his campaign office located on Sooke Road in the Colwood Corners mall complex. If any of our club members could donate even just a few hours of their time to help out at the office it would be hugely appreciated. Even just a few hours here and there on a very flexible schedule would help immensely. There are only about 25 days left in this federal election (May 2nd is voting day), and I’d hate to see Troy’s campaign suffer from the lack of a few more volunteers that could have made a difference!

Anyone that is interested in spending a bit of time volunteering on Troy’s behalf can call his campaign office at 250-590-4839. They can talk to Erin, Grace, Jan, or any of the other office volunteers for details, duties, and time scheduling. The office is open to the public 7 days a week, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and is staffed from our pool of volunteers.

Thank You,

Al Page

Editors Note: My husband Tom and I were up at the range on Sunday with our friends. We noticed that at the rifle/ pistol range, most of the people shooting at one side, were not wearing their safety glasses. It is mandatory to wear them! Also we noticed when one couple went to leave, when it was the cease fire, they stopped to show their rifles to another couple. A man from the other side came over and told them not to handle firearms during a cease fire. My husband and I were about ready to remind those people while the cease fire is on, there is no handling of firearms. Thank You to the man who stepped up and told them.

Cowboy Practice Report

A cold and rainy morning did not deter a record number of shootists from attending the Cowboy Shoot Practice on March 13th. The well attended event had one full stage where the shootists could compete and then check their progress. There was a practice set up at the opposite side of the range where novices were given detailed instruction on range procedures, firearms handling and safety. There was a guest from Japan who had a wonderful time. There were also a number of first time cowboy action shooters that all stated they would return. A wonderful time was had by all. Submitted by Gary Kangas

BIG GAME RECORDS BOOKS

Copies of the newly published eighth edition (2010) of the Vancouver Island Columbian Blacktail Deer Records are avail-able at a cost of $5 each. The issue contains a brief history of the records which were started in 1972 by Byron Ma-son and Charles Veasey. Byron Mason has written another excellent article on the history of hunting on Vancouver Is-land from 1900 to 1920. The previous seventh edition (2000) contained Byron’s piece on blacktail deer populations and hunting on Vancouver Island from 1843 to 1899.

The current records list 1824 entries scoring 100 or more Boone & Crockett points. Several old hunting photographs have been reproduced for the first time in the Vancouver Island deer records booklet.

Some copies of the seventh edition (2000) are still available at $4 each. Contact Wayne Zaccarelli @ 250-382-8502 or at general meetings to get your copies.

Big Game Records of British Columbia books are also available as follows:

2nd edition (1983) $20.00 3rd edition (1988) $20.00

4th edition (1995) $20.00 5th edition (2003) $30.00

These are hard cover books containing records of all big game native species, hunting stories and photographs. Check out the Wildlife Records Club of B.C. website or e-mail to:

Website: www.wildliferecordsofbc.com

e-mail: [email protected]

Contact Wayne Zaccarelli for record books or further information. A new 6th edition is currently being compiled and should be available around year end.

Entry fees are $20 per animal. If you have a harvested or found big game animal which you would like scored as a potential record book entry, please contact Fred Pringle @ 250-478-1862. Fred is an official Club scorer and also a Boone & Crockett scorer.

NEW 6TH EDITION BIG GAME RECORDS BOOK

A new 6th edition BIG GAME RECORDS OF BRITISH COLUMBIA has been published by the Wildlife Records Club of B.C. The 480 page hardcover book features a fall Grizzly painted by Prince George wildlife artist, Ken Ferris, on the front cover.

The book contains more than 9000 entries in 19 big game categories and lists over 1900 new entries received since the 2003 edition. Included are feature articles of general interest along with a wide variety of pictures and hunting stories re-lated to the more recent entries.

The Wildlife Records Club of British Columbia was formed in Kamloops in 1969 with the objective of maintaining a perpet-ual record of trophy class big game taken in British Columbia. Using the Boone & Crockett scoring system, the Club has scorers throughout the province for the convenience of hunters. Since 1982, directorship of the Club has been based on Vancouver Island.

The Club is dedicated to wildlife conservation, selective hunting and fair chase. Copies of the 6th edition Records Book are available from Wayne Zaccarelli (250-382-8502) or from Island Outfitters in Victoria.
