Will Esquimalt flush regional sewage plan?Ongoing saga comes to a head on Monday when council votes

The eyes of the Capital Region are on the small township of Esquimalt this weekend, as councillors weigh a decision that will shape the outcome of the Capital Regional District’s $830-million sewage treat-ment project.

More than 400 Greater Victoria residents packed the Esquimalt Recreation Centre gymnasium Tues-day – prompting another night of discussion Wednes-day – to listen and offer opinion on a wastewater treatment plant slated for McLoughlin Point.

The CRD needs Esqui-malt to approve a rezoning bylaw in order to proceed with construction on the site this summer. About 40 speakers addressed council over the two eve-nings, while only one per-son spoke in support of the project Tuesday night.

“Thank you for recogniz-ing that this is a regional issue,” said Marsha Hen-derson, a Saanich resident, echoing praise of several speakers from outside the municipality. “Your names will be associated with the project for good, but I applaud the courage to go against this.”

Speakers criticized

McLoughlin Point as too small for the wastewater facility, while others said the CRD’s tsunami model-ling and weather behaviour data for the site is unreli-able. Others were con-cerned the CRD hasn’t yet provided a clear route for a sewage sludge pipeline between McLoughlin and the Hartland landfill, argu-ably the overall project’s most disruptive feature.

Esquimalt rejected a sim-ilar application last year, but this time the CRD is offering about $13 million in mitigating features, includ-ing funding for pedestrian and cycling pathways, roadway redevelopment and a $55,000 annual cash payment for five years.

City’s film industry envisions new boomRestoration of ‘distant location’ tax credit a major coupDaniel PalmerNews staff

The Greater Victoria film industry is “popping cham-pagne corks” after a surprise announcement in Tuesday’s provincial budget, says the region’s film commissioner.

Effective Feb. 19,  Finance Minister Mike de Jong announced all new film pro-ductions in the Capital Region will be eligible for a six-per-cent tax credit, known as the distant location regional tax

credit. The decision should double direct spending by film companies in the region by the end of 2014, said Kath-leen Gilbert, Vancouver Island South Film and Media Com-missioner.

“We’re absolutely thrilled. We expect we’ll feel the effects immediately,” she said. “I have three calls to make to pro-ducers this (week) who were waiting to see if we’d got (the tax credit). I’m hoping to have them here by next week scout-ing locations.”

Gilbert is optimistic the decision will boost direct film spending from 2013’s total of about $7 million to at least $18 million by the end of 2014.

Victoria’s film industry has seen a devastating drop-off

since 2006, when 11 major productions brought in $20 million to the local economy.

In 2008, the B.C. govern-ment implemented the rural tax credit  for all filming done outside the Lower Mainland, from north of Whistler to east of Hope. The Capital Region, however, was excluded from the credit in 2009.

Since then, the global reces-sion, combined with a strong Canadian dollar, has driven direct film spending down-ward, Gilbert said.

“We have had a lot of pro-duction over the last few years that have set up in Vic-toria, but try to do at least 70 per cent of their locations out-side the CRD (to claim the tax credit),” she said.

Bruce Carter, CEO of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, said the economic benefits from increased film production will be significant, particularly for restaurant, hotel and construction indus-tries and car rental firms.

“This will help build (our) share of the film industry, as the capital has some unique locations not found anywhere else in B.C.,” he said.

Gilbert, who has been lob-bying the province for years on the matter, said she had no advance notice from de Jong on the tax credit announce-ment today.

“Yesterday, I was convinced we weren’t going to get it,” she said. “We’re beyond excited.”

Best Bloomin’ City label well-earnedAnnual Victoria Flower Count runs for a week Don DescoteauNews staff

Greater Victoria’s blossom-provoking mild weather has for years given locals ammu-nition for some lighthearted gloating at prairie and eastern Canadian residents.

The annual Victoria Flower Count, which kicks off its 37th year of tallying blooms around the Capital Region on Tues-day (Feb. 25), aims not only to boost community pride,

but to create awareness of the region as a shoulder season tourist destination.

“The Flower Count is not only a longstanding local tra-dition, it is an important dif-ferentiator for the region,” said Tourism Victoria presi-dent and CEO Paul Nursey. While tourism is a high stakes and competitive business, he said, the industry is gain-ing momentum in the Capital Region, in no small part to the weather. Promotions such as the Flower Count are a way to help even out the seasonal dis-tribution of visitors to Greater Victoria, Nursey added.

More than 760 million

blooms were counted last year. The City of Victoria won the Community Challenge award with the most blos-soms tallied.

The Flower Count runs from Feb. 25 to March 3. For details on how to count blossoms, visit flowercount.com/guide.

Hometown tourists receive big discounts

Butchart Gardens, Butterfly Gardens and Shaw Ocean Dis-covery Centre are big tourist draws during the high season, but expect them to be packed with locals next week.

The annual Be a Tourist in

Your Hometown promotion, on from Feb. 27 to March 2, offers admission to nearly 20 local tourist attractions and recreation centres as well as deep discounts at local busi-nesses, all for only $12.50.

The passport also includes discounts for local attractions like Adrena LINE Ziplines (half price), the Royal B.C. Museum and IMAX Victoria (half price), whale watching with Prince of Whales ($50) and a day pass for B.C. Transit ($5 value).

The leading cause of blindness in older people is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which results in the loss of central vision and the ability to see fine details. AMD is primarily triggered by a lifetime of free-radical damage, so the best way to protect your eyes is to make sure they have an abundant supply of targeted antioxidants.

Cataracts are another common problem associated with aging. More than half of all North Americans in their 80s either have cataracts or have had surgery to replace the clouded lens. Not surprisingly, the same nutrients that protect against AMD have also been shown to help stave off cataracts.

NEW Vision Essentials with lutein, beta-carotene, ginkgo biloba, lycopene, black currant and 10 other nutrients helps reduce the risk of developing cataracts and helps to maintain eyesight in conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

“The amenities for Esquimalt will only be achieved through this rezoning,” Mayor Barb Des-jardins reminded the packed room.

Some at the meeting argued any developer needs to provide amenities when seeking approval for a major project, and the CRD’s incentives shouldn’t be mistaken for bribery.

Should council turn down the current applica-tion, the provincial government could ultimately force through the project and ignore the town-ship’s demands.

Yet some MLAs, including Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Andrew Weaver, have suggested the project’s 2018 deadline should be delayed to review newer and more efficient sewage treatment technology.

Esquimalt council will issue its judgment on Monday night (Feb. 24). The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the municipal hall.

The City of Victoria wants to tap into resident expertise by creating two citizen committees to help direct council decision-making.

Apply before Feb. 26 for the corporate services and standing committee, which deals with com-munications and civic engagement, finance pol-icy development and performance management; and the community services committee, which is expected to tackle policy on environment, parks, affordable housing and transportation issues.

“Our citizens are knowledgeable and passionate and the City can benefit tremendously from their involvement,” said Mayor Dean Fortin.  “This is an exciting opportunity for citizens to work directly with councillors and provide input into key issues that help shape the future of our city.”

Each committee will be comprised of four coun-cil members and three citizen members. Commit-tees meet once per month for approximately two hours.

Council also needs to appoint residents to the Board of Cemetery trustees and the Victoria Fam-ily Court and youth justice committee.

It’s hard saying no to a begging puppy, star-ing into your eyes.

And it’s equally dif-ficult saying no to the smell of fresh cup-cakes, with tasty icing on top and melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Knowing the weakness of us humans, the Vic-toria SPCA is happy to exploit it by hosting its first National Cupcake Day, a fundraiser ben-efiting animals Feb. 24.

Volunteers are also needed to organize, make cupcakes for humans or pets and collect money, said SPCA Victoria branch manager Annie Prittie Bell.

“They can start their own team or they can join ours and bring cup-cakes to sell,” she said. “(If they start their own team) they can bring the funds they raise to

us, afterwards.”Participants who

register at nationalcup-cakeday.ca, will receive a package with posters and balloons to help advertise the event.

Team Victoria Crit-ter Cakes, made up of SPCA staff and volun-

teers will sell cupcakes by donation at the branch, located at 3150 Napier Ln. This will be the Victoria branch’s first time participat-ing in the event, which started in Canada last year with just a few SPCAs and shelters.

“We decided to join because it’s a great awareness piece for the branch,” Prittie Bell said. “It raises aware-ness of animal cruelty and how to work and support animals across the country.”[email protected]

OUR VIEW

From B.C. Games to Olympic dreams

Before Victoria’s own Jamie Benn played for Team Canada in Russia, he played hockey at the 2004 B.C. Winter Games. And more than a decade before speed skater Denny Morrison captured gold and silver medals at the Turin, Vancouver and Sochi Olympics, he raced at the B.C. Winter Games.

More than 50 Greater Victoria athletes are following in the footsteps of many B.C.-raised Olympians before them, taking part in the biannual showcase of young athletic talent.

For some, this will be another exciting opportunity for them to compete in their sport alongside some of the best up-and-coming athletes B.C. has to offer. For others, this will be their first taste of competition on such a large scale.

Young athletes in Victoria are lucky to have an abundance of sporting opportunities, with teams and leagues available nearby that span all ages and skill levels.

It’s a different story in our province’s small towns, where sports are less accessible, given there are fewer nearby competitors and athletes must travel greater distances to compete.

As British Columbians, we are proud that an opportunity such as the B.C. Games exists for young athletes to experience that large-scale competition atmosphere. Without these opportunities, we risk kids losing interest in or having to give up the sports they enjoy playing.

With a significant list of Olympic alumni, the B.C. Games has become a traditional stop on the path to bigger games for young athletes.

As our nation’s homegrown talent competes on the world stage in Russia this weekend, they will no doubt inspire many young athletes at the B.C. Games to dig a little deeper and come up with their best efforts.

Whether it’s Morrison, from Fort St. John, standing on the podium in Sochi, or the promise of a medal from Benn and his four B.C.-reared teammates on Team Canada, we as British Columbians take pride in our athletes’ Olympic successes.

Providing kids with sport-related opportunities like the B.C. Games is critical – it’s the best way to show our support for tomorrow’s Olympians today.

Re: Canada Post’s problems deeper than funding woes (Letters, Jan. 29)

I agree with Doreen Marion Gee that delivery problems are a serious issue at Canada Post not only in Victoria, but across this country.

It seems Canada Post management deliberately set up the Crown corporation to fail, to justify eventually privatizing it. They are more concerned with profits than quality service, having moved processing of all Island mail to Vancouver last year.

Canada Post made $94 million in 2012 despite the Conference Board of Canada’s projection of a net loss of almost $250 million by the end of 2012. Incidentally, Canada Post is relying on the Conference Board report to justify the drastic cuts now.

Since 1995, Canada Post has paid more than $1.5 billion to the federal government in the form of dividends and income taxes. I feel we were fed misinformation and excuses to justify these drastic cuts.

I have seen it take up to a week to receive a letter mailed in Greater Victoria. Can you imagine how long a letter must take to be delivered within Salt Spring Island with four ferry trips involved?

This slow erosion of service is further driving customers to find alternative delivery options. This poor delivery standard must surely impact small businesses that rely on mail and bill payments to manage their business. Raising the price of a

single stamp to one dollar will only compound this situation.

Eliminating door-to-door service will not improve delivery. It will create new problems, such as theft, litter, traffic, devaluation of property values and increased municipal taxes to cover policing and planning.

There are better ways to fix problems. Canada Post can increase services to the public like postal administrations do in other countries with the concept of postal banking.

Canada Post had a five-year plan which cost $2 billion to implement and was supposed to lower the cost of delivery. By dramatically raising postage rates and reducing service, they are destroying the business and taking away a good service to the customer. They are also wasting their investment in modernization, which was to deal with the gradual decrease in letters.

Amalgamation would solve woes of the tradespeople

Amalgamation is a word that seems to be either sung like a bird or hissed like a snake, depending on the tongue from which it spoken.

As a contractor in the Capital Region, I have been exposed to eight of the municipalities and their building officials through various aspects of building and development. Each time I have

to deal with a new municipality, I get discouraged because of the inconsistencies between each one.

A great example is the application of rainscreen to new construction and renovations. In Saanich you are required to rainscreen, in Oak Bay you are not. How can you cross a street and have such different construction requirements?

Another example is the manner in which you book inspections. Saanich has a great system where you call in and book an inspection with the clerk, then the inspector calls you the morning of the inspection with a one-hour window. Victoria, on the other hand, has a number that you call, and nine times out of 10 you get an answering machine telling you that you cannot book an inspection by leaving a message. You have to keep calling until you get the clerk and are then issued a two-hour window.

In the building trades we have a great word: typical. It means you know what to expect – the exact opposite of what you get each time you have to deal with a different municipality in Greater Victoria.

We may not be ready for a full amalgamation, but I suggest and support that we start with the building trades to create some uniformity to the Capital Region.

When a blood pressure clinic stopped by the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce last year, operations manager Linda Kitchen was the first in line.

Kitchen had suffered a heart attack, brought on in part by hypertension, or high blood pressure, in Feb. 2012.

“(The clinic) was a quick, painless and enlightening experience for all our staff,” she said.

Take the Pressure Down clinics are a joint partnership between Beacon Community

Services and the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation to offer free blood-pressure monitoring at workplaces across the Capital Region.

More than 20 per cent of Canadian adults will suffer complications of high blood pressure in their lifetime.

A 2006 study funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation showed persistent work stress can cause hypertension that can have a damaging effect on heart health.

Chronic job strain

was correlative to increased blood pressure in subjects over a one-year period.

Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort and Spa held its first Take the

Pressure Down clinic last fall as part of its annual health and wellness fair.

It hosted a Healthy Heart Awareness Clinic for employees during

Valentine’s Day week.Upcoming public

drop-in clinics across the Capital Region include:

– YMCA Broughton Street Mar. 4, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

– Walmart Uptown, Feb. 24 and Mar. 6, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Film fest organizer Ryan Lance, also the City of Victoria’s child and youth programmer, said he’s hoping for 25 submissions this year in the Grade 8 and under and Grades 9 to 12 categories. There are also plans to expand the film fest to include youth at community associations and rec centres in other municipalities next year, he said.

“It gives youth an opportunity to speak out and share their experiences and feelings, and then to connect with each other.”

The Victoria Sexual Assault Centre, Canadian Red Cross, Victoria Film Festival and other agen-cies will also be engaging kids and parents at next week’s event.

“The great thing about this film fest is you get all sorts of levels of skill, but at the end of the day, it’s about participation. It doesn’t matter if you film it on your iPhone, you’ll still get to see it up on the screen,” Lance said.

The B.C. government officially recognized Pink Shirt Day in 2008, and the anti-bullying movement has since become a national and international movement.

Purchasing a pink shirt at London Drugs, or online at pinkshirtday.ca, will benefit the Boys and Girls Club Services of Greater Victoria, said Kate Mansell, the club’s development director.

“Pink Shirt Day is a good thing to raise aware-ness of bullying and the impact it has, but it’s something you have to work at every day,” she said. “It’s not something that’s just magically going to be solved one day a year. It’s embedded into our programming.”

Last September, Trevor Kidd found himself in a studio in Toronto jam-ming with guys from the punk rock band Billy Talent. It’s a scene aspir-ing musicians daydream about, but

the humble 18-year-old Langford musi-cian just took it all in.

He had landed amid rock stars as the culmination of events that began with him writing a song, his first song, Little Dreamer.

Through his teens, Kidd had been the bassist in a number of potentially suc-cessful bands, one of which appeared on Dragons’ Den, and another that produced an album and lined up a Canadian tour, but the band imploded. Frustrated, he went solo, put down the bass and started writing and singing.

“I had planned to leave high school early, but had a bad start. The band fell apart. It was devastating,” he said. “That happens in this business.”

Kidd penned Little Dreamer in September 2012, recorded an acoustic version in Langford with local musician Ken Mason, and uploaded it to YouTube. The message of the song was plucked from his own life.

“Initially the song was about a promis-ing success that fell apart,” he said. “but

it’s a song for any kid about persevering as a musician. It’s about not giving up even though it’s a long, hard road, to keep going.”

He started emailing Little Dreamer to musicians and radio stations, and caught a break four months later. Cherie Currie of the ’70s band The Runaways heard it, liked it and spread it around. Kidd then entered the song into a vote for Mount Doug’s 2013 graduating class song, where it competed against commercial hits like Phillip Phillips’s ubiquitous Home. It was no contest – his peers recognized Little Dreamer as a powerful message from one of their own, and Kidd nabbed most of the votes. At the June gradua-tion ceremony, he was on his guitar as his song erupted from 200 classmates.

“It was big, like singing with a gospel choir. That doesn’t happen everyday,” Kidd said.“It was weird. I was never a popular kid in high school. I kept to myself. It was surreal and it was flatter-ing.”

Later that year, Kidd entered his song into the songwriting contest, “My Song for Change”offered by the Make Music Matter charity. Through a concerted social media effort, he made it into the Top 10. Musicians from Billy Talent, Sum 41 and Grammy award-winning music producer David Bottrill handpicked the winner – a young musician from Langford. Kidd found out in August, and was on a plane

to Toronto on Sept. 28.“I felt so much excitement and adren-

aline and worry,” he said. That afternoon he was jamming with Billy Talent, a band he first saw at age 11 in Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. “It’s was like you are jamming in a room with your friends, and you look around and see guys you watched on TV as a kid.“

At the renown Metalworks Studios, Billy Talent’s Ian D’sa and Aaron Solowoniuk, and Cone McCaslin of Sum 41 became Kidd’s one-day band, pro-duced by Bottrill. “Having a room full of rock stars staring at you is intimidating but it worked out. The whole thing was a dream come true.”

Kidd, now sporting Jim Morrison-esque locks, first picked up a guitar at age 8, but took a few years before he taught himself a few tunes, starting with Black Sabbath’s Paranoid.

“It had been frustrating and made me want to give up, and that makes me want to teach kids the excitement of the guitar.”

He recently landed a teaching gig at the newly formed West Shore Music Academy, and works to connect with musicians and producers.

He plans to record a new album of original material, and is performing an acoustic show at The Cellar nightclub in Vancouver on March 8, four days after his 19th birthday.

XX Comedy fest launches

Ten years ago, an unapolo-getic boozehound of a woman in a Hawaiian lei and shades first strut-ted to the fore of an alt-comedy show in Toronto.

After she was done delight-ing and offending as only Louise can, she crawled back into Kirsten Van Ritzen’s mind, a fertile ground from which punchlines and proj-ects flow. The comic, actor, writer and producer’s latest undertaking: launching Victoria’s first Funny Women Festival, a chance to host professional comics from across Western Canada, while highlighting the women of Victoria’s burgeon-ing comedy community. It’s a scene

Van Ritzen has played a key role in building since she moved to Victoria with her partner Ian Ferguson in 2010.

“I’ve lost count of everyone who’s joined the scene,” she said, estimating the shows at about 10 a month. “They say your first hun-dred shows don’t count, so you really hustle to get your stage time. That opportunity really is here now and it wasn’t four years ago.”

Van Ritzen has watched the growth from all angles, as a profes-sional performer and a motivator to a growing contingent of amateurs who have taken her standup work-shops.

Some of those former students were among the 32 emerging and

established female performers she worked with last year as executive producer of She Kills Me, a 13-episode series of comedy specials now airing on Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, taped in front of a live studio audience over five days at The Metro Theatre last February with Van Ritzen as host.

The project aligns with her hopes to see Funny Women evolve into a multi-platform festival. Its inaugural year features two nights of comic

variety, including headliners Melanie Rose, Shirley Best and Rachel Sommer – along with a long lineup of locals (full disclosure: including this writer) and that saucy Louise at the Victoria Event Centre (1415 Broad) this weekend. “I really like the idea of giving the women who live here and have been building the community a chance to shine.”

Advance tickets, $20/show are recommended, 250-590-6291 or ticketrocket.org.

Eco version of world’s top seller stingy on gasThe Toyota Corolla is the best selling car of all time, world-wide, selling 1.3 million units in Canada alone since it was introduced in 1966.To say the Corolla is a big deal for Toyota is an under-statement as it represents 47 per cent of all passenger sales for Toyota Canada. But the Corolla is also a big deal for Canada as it is made in Ontario and the Cambridge assembly plant. Cambridge was selected as the lead plant for vehicle development, as it makes cars for all of North America, the Corolla’s biggest market. This new 2014 Corolla has been on sale here since the fall of 2013 and by the num-ber I see on the road, it looks to be a hit already. For those that place fuel economy over everything, the Corolla Eco might just be worth a look as it takes an already thrifty car and squeezes even more out of each litre of fuel.

LooksOne major criticism of Toyota as a brand, and the Corolla, in particular, has been drab styling. Toyota recently has been walking a nice line between updating their lineup to be more progressive but also keeping their loyal buyers happy. The Corolla is sold in several different trim levels, starting at $15,995 to get the base CE, but the reality is that most Canadians will upgrade to the $19,215 S (Sport) or the LE for $19,500. To upgrade to this $20,500 LE Eco model is $1,035 over the S model and $750 over the regular LE. I prefer the S trim for its more aggressive 17-inch wheels compared to the LE and LE Eco, which come with smaller 16-inch wheels. Regardless, this model is a massive step forward in terms of delivering an

eye-catching design. The lower stance, standard LED projector headlamps and sleeker bodywork now make this a car people would be proud to own.

InsideThe dash is wide and flat with easy to see, and use, radio and heat controls, but the look is fresh and contemporary. The seats now sit lower in the car to make room for the slightly lower roofline, but I found getting in and out no problem. The seats provide excellent support and comfort. The back seat has a lot more legroom because the wheelbase of this new model has been stretched by 10 cms. The car is also

slightly wider, making hip room impressive. Overall the cabin is large and airy and nicely put together, considering the price. Since the S, LE or Eco models will be the sales leaders, Toyota has kitted all three out with a 6.1-inch touch-screen radio that includes Bluetooth streaming audio, phone connectivity and a backup camera. Faux leather seats are available on the S and LE but not the Eco. The good news is that all models come with heated front seats.

DriveAll but the Eco model come with a 132hp version of the 1.8L 4-cylinder engine carried over from the last car. The Eco gets a 140hp version that comes with Toyota’s Valevematic technology that helps to pump out the extra 8hp, yet improves fuel economy. The base CE is sold with either a 6-speed manual or the 4-speed automatic found in the last model. The only other model to be offered with a manual is the S trim. That leaves the LE and Eco with a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT),

and this unit as an option in the S trim. The upside to buying the Eco is an improved fuel economy score. The regular LE with a CVT has a combined city and highway rating of 5.9L/100km but the Eco model drops that down to 5.7L/100km.The penalty for this economy is a lack of driving spirit. I drove the S model at the Quebec City launch and expected a similar performance because this Eco has eight more horse-power. Not the case. I would take the minor fuel economy hit and buy the S or regular LE instead.

VerdictThe Corolla is a fine update, Toyota set out to make a roomier, more stylish and value packed car. The Eco has no options avail-able so it sticks to the $20,150 base price. I do enjoy the new interior, the styling is an improvement and many families will welcome the space.

The LowdownPower: 1.8L 4-cylinder with 132hp or 140hpFill-up: 6.5L/4.6L/100km (city/highway Eco) Sticker price: $15,995-$20,250

he folks over a GM felt it was time to raise the bar and with this latest

incarnation of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. And indeed it took a major step forward by anybody’s estimation. Competition is fierce in the half-ton pickup market and with heavy concentration on fuel consumption. It’s tough to find a balance between fuel economy and a strong capable truck. But the Silverado designers achieved that balance and were recognized publicly for the achievement. The awards presentation at the North American Internation-al Auto Show in Detroit saw GM haul away top honours for the Corvette Stingray and Silverado pickup, which were named North American Car and Truck of the year. You can’t just beef up a suspension and still expect a smooth ride. Chev did – the Silverado utilizes finely tuned shock absorbers that respond to small vibrations and tackle the big bounces with ease. I admit I had

my doubts. Driving the Silverado over a pot-hole-laden road did change the dynamics on how the truck handled but the shocks adjusted themselves perfectly. The frame mounts at the back of the cab are hydrau-lic and this helps to control any vibration. The rear axle size is increased to handle the larger torque output from the engine. Speaking of engines the Silverado offers three engine choices. The first is a 4.3L V6 with a 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque. An all-alu-minum 5.3L V8 with 355 horsepower and a 6.2L EcoTec V8 that produces 420 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. This engine also has active noise cancellation, very similar to good quality headphones. The transmission is a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic with two overdrive gears. It has an estimated combined fuel economy of 13/8.7 L/100 km. Although my real world numbers were not that close, the transmission undoubtedly helped push a

tank of gas a little farther than I expected. Properly equipped, this Silverado can tow up to 5216 kg (11,500 lb) which is impressive for a half-ton pickup. The redesigned interior offers more leg room and is

easily accessed through the larger doors. Stain resistant cloth seats or optional leather seats are very com-fortable. The glove box is a two-piece design and the centre console has plenty of room for files and junk to go missing for years.

The steering wheel controls and other knobs on the dash are within reachable distance from the driver and larger enough that they can be used while wearing work gloves. My tester was equipped with Mylink system that

basically controls every-thing. The voice recognition is easy to use and can respond to normal speech patterns. Bluetooth capabil-ities allow easy pairing of any smart phone with very little effort and accessing your music is a breeze. The rear bumper has steps built into it on both corners of the truck, making the job of climbing in the back an easy task. The tailgate features EZ-lift hardware

that makes lowering the tailgate a one-handed job. An option available is LEDs mounted under the box rails to light up the cargo area and make every nook and cranny visible. Many innovative improve-ments were made to this truck to keep up with the consumer demands and the result will help spur Canadian sales.

Yes, you can buy fun cars for under 30 grand.A few weeks ago, I recom-mended five fun coupes for singles, with base prices that didn’t start with a three. Readers demanded more so here are five more cars a little easier on the wallet in purchase and operation.Disclaimer, you don’t have to be single and willing to mingle to fall in love with these vehicles. In fact, some of them are family friendly. No really, they are.Ford Focus ST- $29,999Hot hatch? I think so.Ford’s Focus ST (Sports Technologies) is quite the exciting ride.As soon as you sit inside the Ford Focus ST cabin, you’re embraced by Recaro sport seats that hug you and don’t let go. There’s a six-speed manual gear-box connected to a 2.0L High-Output EcoBoost I-4 engine. The high-output engine offers 252 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Yes, that’s a herd of horses under the hood, but driving this sport-tuned version of ST is actually quite agree-able in the city.Chevrolet Sonic RS - $23,995The Sonic RS Hatchback might not be the first choice of “performance” vehicle on your list, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be added. This five-door has some cool features like: a unique RS liftgate-mounted rear spoiler, 17-inch Midnight Silver painted-aluminum wheels, Lane Departure Warning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with con-trast stitching and flat-bot-tom design, and leather-ap-pointed seating surfaces with ‘sueded’ microfibre inserts. That’s on top of seating

for five and a powerplant comprised of a 1.4L, turbo-charged 4-cylinder with 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque.Fiat 500 Abarth - $20,995Anytime you see a scorpion on something – or in real life – you can count on there being some sort of sting. The Fiat 500 Abarth is no different, except this sting makes you smile. This pint-sized two-door might look somewhat cutesy, but the terrestrial arachnid badging denotes otherwise. Turn the ignition on and the rumble of the dual exhaust comes to life. It’s anything but tame in tone. Put the 5-speed, heavy duty manual transmission into gear and hopefully you’ll be able to make good use of the 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. That’s the kind of power being generated from its 1.4L, MultiAir turbocharged engine. Along with a performance tuned-suspension, perfor-mance brakes and 16-inch wheels, this Fiat might be small, but makes up any “size matters” issues with its dynamic performance.Honda Civic SI

(Coupe/Sedan) - $26,245/$26,250Take the exceptional reliability of Honda, its popular-selling Civic coupe/sedan, lace it with a potent engine and some cool gadgetry and you have the SI trim.Up until only a few years ago, the Civic SI was only offered in coupe format, but that changed in 2007. Those who wanted performance and practicality would be granted access to such pleasures of life.Setting it apart from its tamer siblings is a 2.4-litre engine producing 201 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. It also comes standard with 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. Not to mention a 6-speed manual transmission. Whether opting for two or four doors, you can’t go wrong. Scion FR-S - $26,450The return of the fun-to-drive rear-wheel drive sports coupe that’s priced under $30K can be linked to the Scion FR-S. You could also say it is linked with the Subaru BRZ as these four-seater, two-door ve-hicles were a joint venture product between the two Japanese brands. The FR-S features a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine, developed in collaboration with Subaru. It combines Subaru’s horizontally opposed engine and Toyota’s D-4S injection system. The result is 200 naturally aspirated horses and 151 lb-ft of torque and can be matched with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The back seats might not be incredibly comfortable but all the festivities are up front anyway.

Skip Ryan Cassidy (front) hopes to be

on the button at crucial times during

this weekend’s B.C. Winter Games curling competition in Mission. Cassidy

is joined by Alexander Horvath (from right), Derek

Chandler and Scott Gray on the Zone 6 (Vancouver Island/South Coast) team for the event. The

girls team includes skip Bailey Tinkler (from left), Sydney

Brilz and Julia Kresse (Jordan

Koster missing). The teams have been practising at Juan de Fuca

Winter Games curling reps have experience on their side

Edward HillNews staff

Young curlers based at Juan de Fuca Curling Centre are eye-ing gold as they represent Van-couver Island and the coast at the B.C. Winter Games in Mis-sion this weekend.

The girls, known as Team Tin-kler, and the boys, Team Cassidy, will compete against B.C.’s best teen curlers in round robin play. Despite their young ages, both squads have plenty of experi-ence in the house.

This is Sydney Brilz’s sec-ond time curling at the Winter Games. The 16-year-old Belmont secondary student won silver in Vernon in 2012, just her second season in the sport.

“It’s pretty competitive. It’s a different dynamic (than provin-cials),” she says of the Games atmosphere. “You stay in the same room as the people you are competing against. You get to know teams really good, they become good friends, but … you

want to win. You kind of switch gears (on the ice). There’s no friendship, you just play.”

The rink’s skip, Bailey Tin-kler, a 17-year-old Spectrum Community School student, is also joined by Colquitz middle schooler Julia Kresse, 14, and Jordan Koster, 16, from Courte-nay in representing Zone 6.

Like many young curlers, Tin-kler first stepped on the pebbled ice after watching her parents and siblings play. That was seven years ago.

“It’s been in my family for a long time,” she says. “My brother and sister had a big influence on me and I wanted to get out there and try it. I like the strategy of the game. And you definitely learn about yourself on the ice.”

Tinkler says she’s looking for-ward to the Games, adding it’s been a goal of hers to achieve this. “It’s exciting.”

The boys rink is skipped by Ryan Cassidy, a 15 year old with seven years’ experience on the ice. He is still runner-up in terms of experience on the foursome. Alexander Horvath, 15, began pushing rocks at age 4.

Both Belmont students, they

competed at junior nationals in January as part of Cameron De Jong’s 2014 B.C. junior men’s championship-winning rink.

Horvath says winning the Zone 6 berth for B.C. Winter Games wasn’t tough, but they expect heavy competition for gold at the Mission Curling Club.

Scott Gray and Derek Chan-dler, both 15, round out the team, which has been practis-ing five days per week at Juan de Fuca.

“It’s a strategic game, like chess. You have to think ahead, think about what your opponent is going to do before they do it,” Horvath says.

Coach Julie Semenchuk said the boys have a good chance at the gold if they stay focused on the game, while having fun.

“I make sure they are acting like a team, communicating like a team,” she says. “If they aren’t being a team, they lose bits and pieces of the game. I give them a friendly reminder to be good and to have fun.”

The B.C. Winter Games run today (Feb. 21) through Sunday. Follow results at bit.ly/[email protected]

Choosing to sell your home is a major life deci-sion, one requiring plenty of forethought and planning.

From there, figuring out how best to put your home in front of potential buyers is the next big challenge. The majority of homeowners turn to real estate agents to market their property.

Many home sellers these days are choosing to take a more active role in finding the right agent to work with. That often includes inter-viewing prospective sales-people to determine who’s best suited for the job. To help make that decision, some key questions can be asked, say directors with the Victoria Real Estate Board.

“Experience in the mar-ket you’re trying to sell in is probably more important than the amount of time they’ve been in the busi-ness,” says board president Tim Ayres, whose specialty is the Sooke area. “Being up on your specific market niche is key.”

Asking how much busi-ness the agent is carrying – that is, how many listings –  can indicate a couple of things, he says. Not only can it give a sense of the volume of potential buyers looking at their properties online and in print, it offers a clue into how much time they

have to spend directly with you, as opposed to working with assistants.

“It’s a delicate balance there,” Ayres says. “Some-thing people definitely do too much is go with the per-son who has the most list-ings.”

Home sellers often ask him how he plans to market their homes and how their approach might be different than their competition.

Realtor and board director Tony Wick, in his 28th year in the business, acknowl-edges that technology has streamlined the industry, but will tell prospective cli-ents he still prefers to do things like present offers or counter-offers in person with his clients. He also likes to get on the phone with the purchaser’s agent to find out where they’re at.

“Even as a listing agent, it’s a good idea to talk to the buyer’s agent to hear their side of the story (on price),” he says.

Wick makes sure he cre-ates a clear communication plan with clients.

“It’s important for the seller to know what the agent is going to do, how they’re going to report back on showings. It’s hugely important to get that feed-back, even if it’s negative feedback.”

In the current market, prospective buyers are taking longer to make up

their minds, a point which increases the need for com-munication and flexibility in approach. Asking how an agent has dealt with highs and lows in the buying cycle is another good question, Wick says.

Guy Crozier, a 22-year Realtor and president-elect for the board, says buy-ers increasingly start their home search themselves before getting involved with an agent.

Sellers need to know the advantages of working with an agent – unfettered access to the Multiple Listings Ser-vice is one – to help navigate current market dynamics, he says.

“Not only do we try to understand buyers, we try and get inside the seller’s head,” Crozier says. “Then we can make really good decisions together.”

In print, Real Estate Victo-ria, a Black Press product, has long been considered the region’s leading resource for listings and promoting open houses. Its listings are also now available through Flyerboard at vicnews.com.

Homefinder, appearing in Black Press community papers, is also available to Realtors wishing to market homes for sale in specific areas of the region.

Like Ayres, he says sellers should ask key questions

about marketing their home.“They need to find out

how (the agent) will get your home in front of buy-ers, and what system they have in place to keep it there and make sure we have a smooth process,” he says.

The elephant in the room may be sales commissions. With Greater Victoria agents using various formats to determine percentages, sell-ers need to be clear at the beginning about their expec-tations and inquire about any variations to that fee structure.

No matter what Realtor you choose, your single big-gest asset needs to be han-dled with care.

It has standard equipment such as Porsche suspension, four-wheel-disc brakes, and 356-type reclining seats.Power is provided by an Audi 1.8-litre, 185 hp turbo fuel

injected engine with auto transmission. It has a full leather interior, square weave carpeting in silver blue with

pink leather binding. The custom 356 instrument panel has pink facing and the courtesy lights even provide a pink hue to the interior. It’s a classic in appearance but it does have such contemporary creature comforts as electric windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, and air conditioning!

‘‘ For those that place fuel economy over everything, the Corolla Eco might just be worth a look as it takes an already thrifty car and squeezes even more out of each litre of fuel.’’Zack Spencer

Fun cars for singles with a price tag under 30 grandYes, you can buy fun cars for under 30 grand.A few weeks ago, I recom-mended five fun coupes for singles, with base prices that didn’t start with a three. Yes, that’s a herd of horses under the hood, but driving this sport-tuned version of ST is actually quite agree-

able in the city.Chevrolet Sonic RS - $23,995The Sonic RS Hatchback might not be the first choice of “performance” vehicle on your list, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be added. This five-door has some cool features like: a unique RS liftgate-mounted rear spoiler, 17-inch Midnight Silver painted-aluminum wheels, Lane Departure Warning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with contrast stitching and flat-bottom design, and leather-appointed seating surfaces with ‘sueded’ microfibre inserts. That’s on top of seating for five and a powerplant comprised of a 1.4L, turbo-charged 4-cylinder with 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque.Fiat 500 Abarth - $20,995Anytime you see a scorpion on something – or in real life – you can count on there being some sort of sting. The Fiat 500 Abarth is no different, except this sting makes you smile. This pint-sized two-door

might look somewhat cutesy, but the terrestrial arachnid badging denotes otherwise.

Along with a performance tuned-suspension, perfor-mance brakes and 16-inch wheels, this Fiat might be small, but makes up any “size matters” issues with its dynamic performance.Honda Civic SI (coupe/sedan) - $26,245/$26,250Take the exceptional reliability of Honda, its popular-selling Civic coupe/sedan, lace it with a potent engine and some cool gadgetry and you have the SI trim.

Up until only a few years ago, the Civic SI was only offered in coupe format, but that changed in 2007.

Whether opting for two or four doors, you can’t go wrong.Scion FR-S - $26,450The return of the fun-to-drive rear-wheel drive sports coupe that’s priced under $30K can be linked to the Scion FR-S. You could also say it is linked with the Subaru BRZ as these four-seater, two-door ve-hicles were a joint venture product between the two Japanese brands. The FR-S features a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine,

developed in collaboration with Subaru. It combines Subaru’s horizontally op-posed engine and Toyota’s D-4S injection system. The result is 200 naturally aspirated horses and 151 lb-ft of torque that can be matched with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed auto-matic transmission. The back seats might not be incredibly comfortable but all the festivities are up front anyway.

Meet Timber, Dave’s 5 year old Brown Lab Dave’s Fav car: 2013 BRZ

Pet friendly &the coffee is always on!

he folks over a GM felt it was time to raise the bar and with this latest

incarnation of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.

B6 • Friday, February 21, 2014 - BLACK PRESS GREATER VICTORIADrivewayBC.ca

Took the all-new BMW 4 Series Cabriolet on one of those leisurely and slow drives typical of a Sunday through Nevada’s stunning-ly beautiful Valley of Fire National Park.Problem was that it was a Tuesday and the only other car on the road seemed to be the somewhat inappro-priately named pace car ahead that kept our speed to a fraction below the posted 30 mph speed limit (which is 48.280 km/h to be precise). Apparently, the overzealous state troopers, you know the guys with the mirrored sunglasses, had warned the Bavarian hosts that they would hold them responsi-ble for any outrageous road behaviour, hence the so-called pace cars ahead of each group of pearl white 435i cabriolets. This topless edition joins its coupe sibling in the new 4 Series classification which is really a new name for 3 Se-ries two-door models. Just like the 2 Series coupes are actually two-door 1 Series models. Oh, never mind.Anyway, this is a tourer for those with the cash rather

than the sports-minded – $67,400 for the test car – so perhaps the afternoon stroll was more appropriate than a blast on the nearby freeway. (A base 428i ver-sion starts at $56,600, and comes with a 2.0-litre, 241 hp, turbocharged four-cylin-der engine.)If you are looking for feedback through the steering, you are not going to get much but there is no argument that it offers a smooth ride and cornering is effortless at 32 mph – devils aren’t we?Once out of the park, the Smokey bears joined the press pack as impromptu pace cars. One ahead of us

pulled off at a doughnut shop as we hit the highway. Here was our chance to open up. A bit. The 300-hp turbo inline-six swiftly moved through 8-speed auto tranny to 100 klicks in a smidgen under six seconds then I chickened out. (6-speed manual transmissions will be available in Canada, which should increase sportiness

in performance.)Rumours circulated at the evening dinner that a member of the Russian press corps had secured a $1,000 fine on that same stretch of road at about the time my co-driver and I had taken turns to punch the pedal and play briefly with steering-wheel mounted paddle gear changers.Oh, and that’s when we

were able to test the true effectiveness of the rear air diffuser (thumbs up) though when it is in place it rules out back seat passengers (thumbs down). And the rush of cooler desert air prompted us to flick the switch on the neck warm-ers, ah yes, a mark of true luxury.Truth is this car is more about looks. How it looks

and how you look in it.And it looks absolutely fabulous, darling. Can’t speak for myself. It is simple and elegant in profile but a scowling front gives it beastly pretensions. The power hard top rises smoothly from its hiding place in the trunk in 20 seconds. We were told it could even be raised in speeds up to 18 km/h.

Why would you want to?When that top is in place it truly looks like a coupe. Cool but even cooler when you lower the windows and see it as a pillar-less coupe. When the top is up it offers 370 litres of trunk space (222 litres when topless), which makes it the roomi-est in its segment. BMW says it will comfort-ably stash two sets of golf clubs, if you are that way afflicted.Classy leather interior, with ergonomically correct front seats. Can’t say the same about the back seats but then who wants to share the open top experience with anybody other than one’s beloved? The controls are handy though the rotary was a bit too close to the front passenger for my liking. No fuel consumption estimates are available yet. There will be an X Drive version later this year.We also got some seat time in the all-new 2 Series M235i . . . check out my thoughts on that at drive-waycanada.ca

Honda introduced the world’s first hot-hybrid-hatch with the launch of its CR-Z for the 2011 model year. The CR-Z is a stylish, driv-er-focused, small two-seat hatchback that’s fun to drive and offers great fuel economy. It’s a contempo-rary take on an older (last sold in 1991) and much loved pocket-rocket called the Honda CRX. Reliability has been outstanding and the CR-Z resale value on the used market is above average, a nice bonus for owners. It is based on a chassis shared with the Honda Fit, an undeniably more practical (with seats for 4/5) vehicle option that lacks the style and sporty appeal of the CR-Z. Under its wedge-like aero-dynamic design is a light-weight yet rigid structure. Its tapering roofline leads to an abrupt tail end with a double-window rear hatch. While the secondary lower glass panel does provide a driver some additional rear vision, overall rear sight-lines are still a drawback. The suspension is also on the firm side and combined with its short wheel base uneven road surfaces can make the ride choppy. The sport theme continues on the inside with buck-et-style seats that offer more side support on both the seat back and cushion. It also comes with large storage bins in the rear (instead of seats) covered by a drop-down cargo area divider when expanded trunk space is needed. Under the hood, there is a 1.5-litre i-VTEC four-cylinder gas engine that’s teamed

with Honda’s compact (10-kilowatt) Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system to provide a maximum of 122 horsepower at 6000 rpm. It’s essentially the same (mild-hybrid) drive system that’s also used in the Honda Insight and Honda Civic Hybrid. City/ highway fuel economy (with auto) is rated at 5.6/5.0 L/100km.The CR-Z, however, does of-fer two unique hybrid-drive differences. A 6-speed manual transmission option being the first and a three-mode operational feature, which allows a driver to choose between Sport, Normal or Econ (Economy) driving styles, the second. The automatic option is a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters that provide seven-speed sequential gear-ratio control. The sport mode has to be selected to use the paddle shifters, but it’s an impressively quick acting feature that’s fun to use. The Econ mode “smoothes” throttle inputs, but will still

kick down the transmission and give full throttle if the driver floors the gas pedal. It also dampens steering re-sponse, air conditioning use and activates the idle stop/start feature sooner, which is a big fuel saver in stop-and-go city driving. Normal mode is a middle-blend of the Sport and Econ modes. No significant changes were made to CR-Z for the 2012 model year, other than vehicles with a red exterior could be ordered with black seat fabric. The 2013 CR-Z did get a few updates, including a more powerful battery pack, a standard reverse camera and Blue-tooth. It was also offered in a Premium trim edition.A Honda legend returns with a modern twist, the Honda CR-Z offers agile handling and a more en-gaging driving experience than previously available in a small hybrid vehicle. Price Check: 2011 - 2013 Honda CR-Z (February 2014)

Safety Recalls: 2011 to 2013 Honda CR-Z:2011: In vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, specific operating condi-tions (such as extreme temperatures, combined with high battery and accessory loads, and operation near engine stalling speeds), could allow the Engine Control Unit to activate the stall prevention assist software. This might inadvertently command the hybrid system’s electric motor to rotate the engine in the opposite direction and cause the vehicle to move in the opposite direction.
