Group seeks reasons why teens are living on the streets

Recognizing the unique needs of youth experi-encing homelessness is a key part of finding solu-tions, said Andrew Wynn-Williams, executive direc-tor at the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Home-lessness.

The coalition recently conducted a study that engaged youth identified as experiencing or being at-risk of homelessness in order to discover what they need and what services are missing.

“We wanted to get a better handle on some of the reasons that youth are becoming homeless

and some of the routes out of homelessness,” said Wynn-Williams.

“It’s been proven time and time again that if we want to help individuals who are marginalized for whatever reason, you get the best solutions when you engage them in those solutions.”

One of the challenges the study found was the need for better transitions from youth to adult ser-vices.

“Youth don’t like to access adult services,” said Wynn-Williams. “They feel threatened. Between 18 and 24 is a very difficult age. That’s when most youth become homeless, because they age out of (provincial) care.”

Another issue youth have is accessing the ser-

vices that are available, he said.“Trying to find out what services to access, how

to access them and where to access them is chal-lenge.”

The McCreary Centre is conducting a count of youth homelessness. That data is expected to be available in May. At that time, Wynn-Williams said they will be able to take the information from the coalition’s study along with the quantitative data to service providers, government agencies and funders and find concrete ways to address the challenges of youth homelessness.

United Way of Greater Victoria finished its 2014 campaign on March 31 with a total of $5.7 million raised.

Despite not reaching the campaign goal of $6 million, CEO Patricia Jelinski said it was a successful year full of innovative ideas.

“This past year's campaign was really energetic,” Jelinski said.

For the first time, United Way of Greater Victoria introduced a pilot project e-pledge

system for several workplaces. More workplaces will be added to the online donation system this year.

New events this year also included an engineering challenge with new companies from the engineering sector that

came on board for a Popsicle stick playground challenge, and also a financial challenge between BMO, RBC, CIBC, TD Canada Trust and Island Savings.

Ginette Berthiaume, executive administrative assistant from the B.C. Assessment head office, has been leading her workplace in United Way fundraising for four years.

In 2014, the 130 people involved at B.C. Assessment raised $31,000.

They do at least one event every month, in addition to weekly casual Wednesdays. If employees give $2 to the campaign, they can wear casual clothes to work.

Berthiaume also organizes work bake sales, pot lucks, book sales and bingo games to raise money.

“You see the need out there, it breaks my heart. There’s nothing I can do on my own, but together we become stronger,” Berthiaume said. “At the same time, it really creates energy in the workplace because we make those things fun.”

Berthiaume is a finalist for United Way of Greater Victoria's Outstanding Employee Campaign chair for the category with over 100 employees, and B.C. Assessment was also nominated for the Naden Band Spirit of Excellence award.

The nominees and finalists for United Way's various awards were announced at United Way's SpiritFest on March 25. Award winners will be announced at the Spirit Awards luncheon on April 21 at the Fairmont Empress Hotel. The awards include 11 categories, 61 nominees and 30 finalists.

“The age group between 16 and 24 is the largest growing segment of the homeless pop-ulation nationally,” said Mark Muldoon, executive director of Threshold Housing Society. “The most concrete issue is the fact that there is a lack of affordable

housing in most cities, and espe-cially in Victoria.”

One of Threshold’s programs is the Safe Housing for Youth program that provides afford-able transitional housing for youth.

Youth also participate in work-shops, including how to be good renters, grief and loss learning, financial literacy as well as lead-ership and personal skills.

“A great impediment for mov-ing forward for a lot of young people with undiagnosed mental

health issues or poor self-esteem or anxiety issues, is a lack of self worth,” said Muldoon.

Van Isle 360 yacht race sets course for JuneTamara CunninghamBlack Press

The first-ever GIN regatta will fire up during this year’s 10th Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race.

Vancouver Island’s marathon yachting race will mark its 10th edition with a record number of com-petitors and the inaugural Gulf Islands Nanaimo (GIN) Regatta, set to sail this June.

Van Isle 360 happens once every two years and has become “the race” to sail in on the west coast of North America, says Jeffrey Motley, who’ll see boats as far as California and New Mexico at this year’s event, including one once owned by Ameri-can’s Cup competitor Dennis Conner.

The race got its start in 1999 with the Ambas-sador’s Edition, with 14 yachts looping the Island. Between June 6 to 20, there will be a record 52 boats and around 500 sailors participating in the 10-leg contest which starts and ends in Nanaimo.

Racers will make stops on the Island along the way spanning French Creek to Port Hardy, Ucluelet and Victoria.

“The race is just one of those amazing events that it’s on the bucket list of everybody,” said Mot-ley, who attributes the success to host communi-ties and volunteers.

The event kicks off in Nanaimo with an antici-pated 1,000 people and a Salvation Army pancake breakfast at the M.E. Mills Landing pier. The public can see the racers off and follow their journey on Van Isle 360’s online race tracker (goo.gl/HnMZ9D).

It’s an “exceptionally challenging” competition, says Motley, who sees it test the preparation of boats and crew communications and relations. Racers go from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. day after day.

“It’s a real marathon of competition,” he said, adding sailors also face currents along the inside passage and it’s not uncommon to have gale-force winds on the outside.

New to the event this year is the participation of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, which will host sailors and launch the regatta for the first time this year.

More than 200 sailors are expected to make the dash from Victoria to Nanaimo in the inaugural GIN Regatta June 19 to 20.

Motley said the international race limits partici-pants and it can be hard for some skippers to get a hall pass – this new event allows them to finish with the fleet.

Negotiations for the Maritime Museum of B.C.’s move into the Steamship Terminal will continue into April.

The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority first gave the museum an extension on Feb. 27, which expired on March 31. The new extension runs until April 15.

“It’s good. [There is] more

breathing room,” said Clay Evans, chair of the maritime museum.

Ivan Watson, Greater Victoria Harbour Authority spokesper-son, said he could not comment on the status of the negotiations.

“The rationale really was to give everyone involved more time to consider options.”

He could not speak to what options those might be.

Negotiations involve the Min-istry of Transportation, Ministry

of Community Sport and Cultural Development and Ministry of Technology Innovation and Citi-zen Services, the parent ministry for Shared Services B.C., as well as the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, property manager for the building. Shared Services B.C. is negotiating on behalf of the museum.

Evans said he can’t see the negotiations going much longer than April 15.

“We’ll keep talking as long as there’s potential to get into that building,” he said.

“But I do understand at some point after seven and a half months, we need to get this done.”

One of the key issues in the negotiation process is the mat-ter of who is going to pay for the leasehold improvements, said Evans.

Terminal the museum hopes to rent is currently a concrete shell.

“We always thought that the money we would raise would go into our exhibits and not so much into fixing up somebody else’s building,” said Evans.

“But if we have to do that to a certain extent and it’s economi-cally viable and it’s built into our rent, we certainly don’t mind pay-ing a portion.”

Backyard bird enthusiasts should regularly clean their bird feeders and bird baths at this time of year, as migratory song-birds return from their winter retreats.

Species such as pine siskins, redpolls and grosbeaks congre-gate in large flocks in spring, and their close contact at a time of weather stress and nutrition shortage can pass diseases from bird to bird, says a bulletin from the B.C. Forests Ministry.

Cleaning feeders every two weeks and changing water in bird baths every few days can reduce the spread of avian pox virus, avian conjunctivitis and salmonella bacteria among birds. Using metal or plastic feeders rather than wood, and spreading out multiple small feeders that only allow one or two birds at a time also reduces the risk of disease transmission.

Wildlife biologists say these bird diseases can also spread to people handling infected birds or contaminated materials. Plac-ing bird feeders over a concrete surface allows easier cleanup of litter underneath, which can also prevent spread of infection.

If you see one or two sick

birds in your area, biologists advise clearing and scrubbing the feeder. If there are more than three diseased birds, take your feeder down for a week or two to encourage birds to disperse.

Here are some common signs to look for:

n Birds with avian conjuncti-vitis have red, swollen, watery or crusted eyes. Infection can be spread by feeders with small openings that birds touch with the sides of their heads. Infected birds may have trouble feeding

and remain on the ground near the feeder.

Negotiations for the Maritime Museum of B.C.’s move into the Steamship Terminal will continue into April.

The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority first gave the museum an extension on Feb. 27, which expired on March 31. The new extension runs until April 15.

“It’s good. [There is] more

breathing room,” said Clay Evans, chair of the maritime museum.

Ivan Watson, Greater Victoria Harbour Authority spokesper-son, said he could not comment on the status of the negotiations.

“The rationale really was to give everyone involved more time to consider options.”

He could not speak to what options those might be.

Negotiations involve the Min-istry of Transportation, Ministry

of Community Sport and Cultural Development and Ministry of Technology Innovation and Citi-zen Services, the parent ministry for Shared Services B.C., as well as the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, property manager for the building. Shared Services B.C. is negotiating on behalf of the museum.

Evans said he can’t see the negotiations going much longer than April 15.

“We’ll keep talking as long as there’s potential to get into that building,” he said.

“But I do understand at some point after seven and a half months, we need to get this done.”

One of the key issues in the negotiation process is the mat-ter of who is going to pay for the leasehold improvements, said Evans.

Terminal the museum hopes to rent is currently a concrete shell.

“We always thought that the money we would raise would go into our exhibits and not so much into fixing up somebody else’s building,” said Evans.

“But if we have to do that to a certain extent and it’s economi-cally viable and it’s built into our rent, we certainly don’t mind pay-ing a portion.”

A study by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business indicates public sector wages are 10 to 15 per cent higher than comparable jobs in the private sector.

Wages for professions such as police officers and firefighters were not taken into account, as there is no comparable private sector positions. However, positions which are part of both public and private sectors were compared for the CFIB’s Wage Watch report, the sixth in the past 30 years.

The report takes its data from 2010 information contained in Statistics Canada’s 2011 National Household Survey. It compares more than 200 occupations in public and private sectors.

In 2010, private sector wages were still suffering from the 2008 economic downturn, which dealt a severe blow to many businesses. Wage increases were non-existent for most employees in 2009 and 2010. Meanwhile, wage increases for government employees continued ticking along.

In years past, public sector wages were often at or even slightly below comparable private sector wages. .

However, in the past 20 years or so, the wages paid to public sector employees have ballooned. This has happened as job security in the private sector has been substantially reduced.

While there was a booming private sector economy in B.C. from 2000 to 2008, many traditional well-paying jobs disappeared to contracting out, new technology or intense competition. Taxes have not been reduced. In fact, they continue to go up — at all levels of government.

Salaries paid to public sector workers need a closer look.

Sidewalks more than just people movers

Re: Education needed on sidewalk etiquette (Letters, March 13)

Sidewalks are not rapid-transit, people-movers. They have many uses, including strolling, sightseeing, and window-shopping.

If I am walking with shop windows on my left, am I going to walk in the right-hand sidewalk lane? I don’t think so. Am I or am I not going to walk on the right in the pouring rain, while the left side is sheltered by awnings and overhangs? Not.

I agree that people walking four abreast and/or taking up the entire width of the sidewalk are selfish and rude.

However, I have found that if you just put your head down and blunder right into them, they generally let you through.

But walking single-file? Lines painted on the sidewalk? What?!? Are we living in Robotland now?

Oh look! The nice merchants have put some stock out on the sidewalk. Over there, to my left.

Bridge project should be reset

Victoria city council is quibbling over a few million dollars more for the huge Johnson Street bridge project that was badly conceived in the first place.

What’s needed is to start the project anew, with proper goals and design criteria, and more attention to quality of planning, management, and fabrication work.

Public art is not needed, and a train station is a waste because its location is not convenient to commuters.

City council spent on “circus for the masses” – a grandiose and technically challenging design – while cheaping by not including the railway tracks needed to get service to where it is needed.

Doing the right thing will be costly because of money already wasted, but it is the sensible way to proceed for the future. Previous work is a “sunk cost”

that should not blind people to the future.

‘Easter bunnies’ as gifts a no-no

With Easter not far off many children start thinking of the Easter bunny and seeing them in TV ads. They may get the idea that they want a cuddly little bunny of their own. Please give this decision some serious thought before you adopt.

Rabbits are timid creatures that do not like being held. If they fall they do not land on their feet as does a cat and many serious injuries can happen.

They are sociable creatures and should not be kept in a small cage.

As a rabbit owner, I know they are sweet, intelligent creatures but a lot of work. Their habitats need cleaning every day and their food and water bottles must be washed.

Young children infatuated with owning a bunny will quickly tire of that chore when other social activity takes over.

A rabbit is a long term commitment, one which must be taken seriously. Too many families faced with this extra responsibility see no option but to dispose of the rabbit. Unfortunately too many times it is dumped in an area with other no longer wanted rabbits, which in itself is a death sentence.

Humane societies will be happy to have the bunny. And toy bunnies may make better pets.

Walk will enjoy a new route at a new location, but their goals remain unchanged.

After many years at Willows Beach, walkers will this year gather at Marigold Elementary School before heading out along the Galloping Goose Trail toward Thetis Lake.

“We are excited about the new location and how central it is for Greater Victoria. We hope this move makes the event more accessible to people from Sidney, Saanichton, Brentwood Bay, View Royal, Colwood and Langford and encourages them to join us on May 3 with their friends and family,” says Ashley Hodgins, Manager of Development, MS Society Van-couver Island Region.

In addition, the new location offers more parking, a mix of concrete and grass surfaces to make participation easier for those in a wheelchair and a beautiful tree-lined route with fewer road crossings and less vehicle traf-fic.

While much is new for this year’s walk, its goals, atmosphere and motivation remain unchanged. As always, the route is fully acces-sible to people using wheelchairs, scooters and walkers. Participants will also enjoy delicious food from Country Grocer and Island Farms, not to mention on-site musical entertainment that will set the tone for the day.

“With everybody coming out the whole thing is quite lovely. With so many people it’s a nice place to be and a happy event,” says Pippa Blake, entering her 13th MS Walk as Rise Above Barriers team captain.

Crediting “wonderful friends and fam-ily who have been in it from the start,” her team has raised more than $30,000 over the years, estimates Blake, who champions both the MS Society staff and the services they provide. “It really is the most unique place because we just have everything under one roof.”

The MS Society of Canada strives each year to support both aspects of its mission: providing ser-vices to enhance quality of life for those living with MS and conducting research into the cause and cure of MS,

Hodgins explains.Donations to the MS Walk provide those

living with MS access to education seminars, information and emotional support, member and partner/caregiver support groups and the equipment provision program. They enjoy drop-in gym and exercise programs, phys-iotherapy, advocacy, social and recreational events, a resource library and much more.

In addition, donations also support MS research being conducted right here in British Columbia, Hodgins adds, noting that prog-ress toward ending a disease typically emerges from thousands of small breakthroughs from hundreds of researchers. Tens of thousands of fundraisers each contribute to those small breakthroughs, which lead to bigger and bet-ter ones.

One of the key aspects of the walk is its sense of community. When MS strikes, there’s often no warning and for people experiencing symptoms for the first time, the cause is some-times misdiagnosed. For people living with MS, symptoms can worsen and new symp-toms can appear out of nowhere. The course of the disease affects everyone differently and can change without warning, which makes it difficult to live with.

“So, to combat a disease that is so unpre-dictable, we organize, prepare for and plan an event – the Scotiabank MS Walk – to come together on a particular day at a particular time to celebrate what we can accomplish together,” Hodgins says. “And when we see you and your family and friends, we want to announce to everyone that we’ve met our fundraising goal, because we will only find a cure for MS if every-one helps.”

HOW CAN YOU HELP?Asking for and receiving a donation is both powerful and inspira-

tional, and almost all of the MS Walk fundraisers get their donations in more than one way, Hodgins says, pointing out that challenging yourself is a great way to build confidence and build on your initial fundraising success.

“So, don’t just post on Facebook, put up a fundraising poster at work and start a fundraising conversation with colleagues. Host a bottle drive, clean out your garage for a garage sale or put items up for sale on UsedVictoria.com under the #UsedHelps option. Email all of your contacts, pledge yourself and ask people to match your commitment to ending MS,” Hodgins says.

Esquimalt has a long association with Boy Scouts.

On Dec. 11, 1909, Esquimalt resident Lt.-Col. John A. Hall, former commanding officer of the 5th Regiment Canadian Army, initiated a meeting held in the Menzies Street Drill Hall in James Bay to see if there was sufficient interest in the area to form a Boy Scout troop. Seventy-two boys attended.

On Jan. 11, 1910 the next step was taken at Hall’s home on Old Esquimalt Road to establish the first council of the Victoria Boy Scouts Association.

Hall, instrumental in the organization of the 88th Victoria Fusiliers, was a natural choice to chair the council. In March 1910, the first badges were issued by the council and six troops organized, with the Esquimalt troop assigned 1st Arbutus, the name still in use today.

In June, the first

parade with all scouts in uniform was held at the drill hall after which Edgar Fawcett presented a Union Jack with the letters “V.B.S.” (Victoria Boy Scouts) in the centre. This brigade flag as it was known was presented to the troop with the largest number of scouts on parade. A site on Old Esquimalt Road was chosen for the first annual Brigade Camp, opening July 2, 1910 and lasting two weeks. Another highlight followed on Aug. 11 when Lt.-Gen. Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the scouting movement, visited Victoria and inspected local Scouts. Two years later he visited again addressing local scouts in front of the

Parliament Buildings “in his usual inspiring manner.”

Subsequent years saw public exhibitions of scouting skills, such as wireless operation, log hut construction and model building. In December 1911, Victoria scouts even tried their hand at theatrics, presenting a musical, The Cruise of the Bilge-Bucket, at the Ancient Order of United Workmen Hall on Yates Street. In the spirit of the scouting movement, funds raised from admissions were passed along to a charity aiding crippled children. Today the spirit of good citizenship is still

evident in the scouting and guiding movement in Esquimalt. Whether it be cubs, scouts, brownies or girl guides, local members can be seen participating in the God’s Acre Candle Light Ceremony, organizing bottle drives, assisting the Esquimalt Lions (the troop’s sponsor) at Buccaneer Days and generally helping those in need.

The Glenshiel wants to give a sock to Our Place (several, actu-ally).

The seniors home will host a sock toss Wednesday (April 8) in support of Fairfield United church’s efforts to collect 365,000 pairs of socks to warm the feet of Victoria’s most vulnerable residents.

All socks will be donated to Our Place.

The toss begins at 1:15 p.m. Residents and guests at the event can toss their donated socks at Fairfield Unit-ed’s Rev. Beth Walker and The Glenshiel’s executive director Lau-rie Mueller.

Kelowna resident Rick Kelly thinks Tesla has missed the boat with its Model S design, so he’s created his own sporty coupe version of the electric car.Well, actually, the car-loving artist has created a digital version of what he calls a Model S 2+2-coupe concept. Kelly explained: “The only ‘sporty’ electric vehicle on the market right now is the BMW i8 – I’ve seen one here in Kelowna and it is spectacular, albeit out

of most people’s price range ($145,000). Tesla has the performance in its electric Model S to be entertaining as a driver’s car. Vancouver auto show becoming world classAs the 2015 Vancouver Interna-tional Auto Show fades into our rearview mirror, it’s a good time to reflect on what a fantastic show it was.Yours truly travels all over the world to such exotic locations as Paris, Geneva, Beijing, New York and Frankfurt, for much bigger auto shows. But to me, it is obvious that the setting for the Vancouver show is, hands down, the best around. The Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre is a stunning building; from the huge windows, to the exposed wood and living roof, it is a world-class venue. And with the expansion this year’s show underwent, the Vancouver show is moving into the big leagues. By keeping the lower exhibit hall exclusively for the big auto manufacturers to showcase the latest, shiny cars, and adding the upper main ballroom and concourse locations helped the show breathe and provided flow. As much as the hot new cars get the atten-tion, often the local vendors can create a stir. Like the gang at Fine Vehicles, who buy

left-hand drive Land Rover De-fenders in Europe and then ship them to England to be rebuilt, before they are imported to Canada. The buyer gets a brand new Land Rover that is unavail-able here, starting at $75,000. The top floor also provided much more walking room for the large crowds to mingle and check out the collection of ex-otic cars or the vintage Corvette collection.It’s the lower floor where the big manufacturers spend a lot of money on elaborate stages to promote the latest and greatest from high-horsepower supercars to fuel sipping environment

vehicles or practical family crossovers.The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is one of this year’s most anticipated cars, with 650hp and a track-ready setup that would make any driver look good. Dodge, not willing to take second seat, actually adds a back seat to its powerhouse Hellcat Charger or Challenger. These two new models come with 707hp and the factory has had to suspend orders so the production can catch up with demand.

Big power may be back but not to worry, the environmentally minded cars were never far from sight. The Vancouver show was chosen to announce the new Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s (AJAC) Green Car of the Year Award. This year’s winner is the Kia Soul Electric Vehicle, providing a practical design with full electric capabilities. Also on display was the Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell vehicle, capable of running on hydrogen, with no tailpipe emission, only water vapour. The hottest trend in the market today is the small crossover vehicles that come in many shapes and sizes, and from all over the world. The Fiat 500X is an example of the latest from Europe, allowing a young family practical, thrifty transportation in a stylish Italian design. Built on the same platform as the new Jeep Renegade, the 500X has more panache and curb appeal.The 2015 Vancouver International Auto Show marked the 95th year of this annual event and it was the biggest and boldest yet.

Sprinter is built for BC resource sectorBy Rob Rothwell

British Columbia’s Monashee Mountains are renowned for their steep north faces and massive old-growth cedars. While its rugged terrain is largely inac-cessible by road, logging activities have given rise to a network of steep, roughly cut access roads, which the spring thaw recently converted to deep quagmires of confidence-sucking mud, rock, and debris. What fool would attempt to drive a large commercial-style van up these routes of impending doom? Me for one. Mercedes-Benz invited me to explore the capabilities of their Sprinter vans available with four-wheel-drive, or in Mercedes-Benz parlance: 4ETS. In the world of commercial high-roof vans, the Sprinter is the only one

in Canada fit with traction at all four corners. Known technically as 4-wheel Electronic

Traction System, 4ETS is an option on V6 diesel-powered Sprinters, including the dual rear-wheel long wheelbase 3500 model. Expect to pay in the range of $6,000 for the feature, which can be paired with low-range gearing and downhill descent control for those seek-ing to maximize the Sprinter’s off-road fortitude. 4ETS is driver-activated as needed via a dash-mounted switch. When the grit of four-wheel-drive isn’t necessary, the setup enables optimal fuel-economy by returning the vehicle to rear-wheel-drive, thereby reducing fuel-robbing mechanical drag.While active, 4ETS splits torque 35/65 front-to-rear. This ratio doesn’t change

though traction-control and stabili-ty-related programs remain active to improve grip and increase safety. These programs can be disabled should the driver require the ability to spin the wheels in an effort to unglue a stuck Sprinter. Keeping one’s right boot deep into the Sprinter’s turbocharged throttle enabled its four wheels, clad in winter tires, to keep digging for traction while spitting out congealed mud and deleterious earthen material in an effort to supply forward propulsion. And it worked. We battled ruts so deep that the entire underside of the van banged and shud-dered viciously as rocks and buried tree limbs from former logging operations

did their best to impede progress. The ride-height of 4ETS-equipped Sprint-ers is increased by 75 mm (3-in) at the rear and 100 mm (4-in) at the front, which improves the vehicle’s approach and departure angles while also impart-ing a 24-inch wading depth.Interestingly, I didn’t find the additional ride-height detrimental to highway driving. The Sprinter felt exceptionally well anchored to the road and remark-ably secure on its winter rubber, even at high-speed on backroads of broken, patchy pavement. As the only game in town when it comes to four-wheel-drive commercial vans, Mercedes-Benz is keen to roll its high-traction Sprinter into industries

such as mining, logging, construction, and any other work environment locat-ed off the beaten path – and that’s huge in a resource-based province like B.C. The long-chassis Sprinter 3500 with dual rear wheels could easily serve as a roll-ing workshop for trades’ people needing access to work camps where four-wheel-drive wherewithal is essential. Mercedes-Benz will also equip the passenger version of their Sprinter with 4ETS. Ski resorts and lodges, such as the Monashee Lodge, will undoubtedly appreciate the expanded capability. “The people organiz-ing the food part have already had a trial run and it was fantastic,” said Suresh Basrur. “They’re really going to put a wonderful spread, a nice nice dinner.”

While the event is supported by the Uni-tarian Church of Vic-toria across from Red Barn Market on West Saanich Road, it’s orga-nized a team of volun-teers with various faith backgrounds. That team hopes to sell 200 tickets to the April 18 event in Victoria.

“We’re also going to have some entertain-ment, some dancing, a short presentation of Indian dance,” Basrur said. “We’re also going to have classical music … they’ll play some light classical music while people are eating to provide a pleasant background.”

It’s all in aid of Child Haven International,

based in Ontario Founded by Rev.

Fred Cappuccino and his wife Bonnie, Child Haven provides shel-ter, food, clothing and education to more than

1,300 destitute chil-dren.

“They started a small centre, now Child Haven has 10 centres total in India, Bangla-desh, Nepal and Tibet.

They provide shelter, food, clothing and edu-cation to these chil-dren,” Basrur said.

Tickets are $30 for the event at the Ukrai-nian Cultural Centre,

International artist Jee Hye Han will make her North American debut when Pacific Opera presents Puc-cini’s Madama Butterfly.

The timeless tragedy of Cio-Cio-San (But-terfly), a geisha who renounces her family to marry an American and who continues to

love him long after he has left her, Madama Butterfly is known for its ravishingly beauti-ful music and its gentle title character, whom

Puccini himself loved above all his heroines.

Han, a soprano from South Korea, plays Cio-Cio-San. She recently launched her interna-tional career singing Butterfly in Vienna and the title role in Pucci-ni’s Turandot in Buda-pest, Vienna, and Hong Kong.

Newfoundland-born tenor Adam Luther (POV’s Vanessa and Das Rheingold) is Cio-Cio-San’s lover, Pinker-ton; a role he recently performed with Michi-gan Opera Theatre.

M e z z o - s o p r a n o Arminè Kassabian (POV’s Ariadne auf Naxos) returns as Cio-Cio-San’s friend and confidante, Suzuki; a role she sang to acclaim

Lloyd Moseby: Blue Jay great taught at 2014 camp

Some of the greatest players to ever suit up for the Toronto Blue Jays will be teaching at a two-day baseball skills camp in Victoria this summer.

The Victoria HarbourCats and the Greater Victoria Baseball Association team up with the Blue Jays for the Honda Super Camp, slated for July 12-13 at Royal Ath-letic Park.

Former Blue Jays greats out-fielder Devon White, second base-man Roberto Alomar, outfielder Brian McRae, second baseman Homer Bush and pitcher Tanyon Sturtze are expected to attend.

“Victoria had one of the best showings a year ago for partici-pation in these great camps, held nationwide by the Blue Jays, and we’re very glad to have the Blue Jays returning to Victoria for 2015,” said HarbourCats general manager Jim Swanson.

Registration for the camps is online, and more information is available through the Blue Jays website bluejays.com/camps.

Pros teach ball skills

The spring sport season for Victoria Special Olympics began this week, offering seven differ-ent sport programs for people with intellectual disabilities.

Sports include softball, T-ball, soccer, track and field, golf and a multi-sport program for youth aged 7 to 11. New this year is a bocce program.

Special Olympics programs are open to people with intel-lectual disabilities of all athletic abilities and experience. Athletes

must be 7 to 11 years in order to participate in the youth program and must be 12 and older for all other sport programs.

Sport practices take place once a week, with additional tournament opportunities avail-able in many sports.

A limited number of spaces are still available in the softball, t-ball and FUNdamentals youth multi-sport programs.

Volunteer coaches are still welcome to apply for all sport

programs.Special Olympics is an interna-

tional athletic program. In Greater Victoria, 215 ath-

letes ranging from 7 to 70 years will participate in Victoria Spe-cial Olympics programs during the 2014-15 season.

More than 250 volunteers help to run 19 different sport pro-grams.

The Victoria Royals are on the road today (April 3) heading back to the Garden City and mentally preparing for one of two possi-bilities: the next round of their Western Hockey League playoffs or game 5 against their first-round opponent – the Prince George Cougars.

The two teams met for games 3 and 4 in Prince George, both games falling after the Victoria News deadline, with Victoria hold-ing a 2-0 record after winning the first two games at home.

If the Royals did sweep the series, they’ll wait to face the win-

ner of the Kelowna Rockets and Tri-Cities Americans series.

If the Cougars managed at least one win then both teams will meet up again Saturday night at 7:05 P.M. at Save-On-Foods Memo-rial Centre.

In other team news, the West-ern Hockey League announced Royals’ forward Brandon Magee has been named Denny’s WHL Player of the Week.

Magee, a native of Edmon-ton, recorded six points (5g-1a) including a hat-trick and both game-winning goals in the Royals’ first two playoff games against

the Cougars last weekend.The veteran becomes the

fourth player in Victoria Roy-als team history to receive the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week award.

The five-foot-nine, 185 lbs. Magee leads the league in playoff scoring and is tied with former Royal Steven Hodges for most playoff points in Victoria/Chilli-wack franchise history with 20 (9g-11a). In his last nine games played including the regular sea-son, Magee has registered 10 goals and six assists for 16 points.

Eves roll into 2015 seasonThe Eves of Destruction’s A-Team returned

home after opening the 2015 roller derby season with a win.

The A-Team travelled to Sequim, Washington on March 28 to take on the Port Scandalous All Stars, a team they lost to at the end of the 2014 season.

Port Scandalous had bested both the Belles of the Brawl and the Margarita Villains in recent sea-

sons, and last weekend’s game marked the first victory for the Eves of Destruction against the All Stars.

The Eves have released their 2015 schedule fea-turing five home games, starting with the home opener versus Chilliwack’s Anarchy Angels on Sat-urday April 25. Game time is 6 p.m., at the Archie Browning Sports Centre.

Getting a sense of what’s hot and what ideas might work in your own home have long been drawing cards for the Young Life Home Design and Renovation Tour.

Celebrating its 25th year of show-casing the work of some of the South Island’s best practitioners in resto-ration, renovation and new home construction, the tour has provided many visitors with ideas and con-nected them with professionals in the industry.

This year’s tour, set for April 10 and 11, offers some serious make-overs, from a 400-square-foot micro-loft suite in Fairfield to a 1973 Saan-ich home that has been transformed into an ultra-modern living space.

While four of the 10 homes on tour are essentially brand new contem-porary designs, a common theme in the remaking of the other homes has been renovating the kitchen and moving out from there, says Young Life tour spokesperson Bill Okell.

“It boggles my mind the whole emphasis put on the kitchen reno; that’s what stands out really,” he says. “I think almost all the (pre-existing) homes are complete reno-vations, but it’s amazing what gets initiated in the kitchen.”

While updating each of those homes’ dining and food preparation areas was central to the renovations, the structures themselves are a mix of styles, from a typical 1960s family home in Gordon Head to a spacious, restored Central Saanich farmhouse that will leave one daydreaming of the Deep South.

As always, the tour organizers encourage homeowners, designers and suppliers to stick around dur-ing the tour to speak with visitors about their work, ideas and sources of inspiration.

Those conversations invariably wind up happening in the kitchen,

Okell says.“When you look at a kitchen with

all the appliances, the sink detail and the counters, it’s a great conver-sation starter,” he says.

“You can really display your products, from countertops to cup-boards, the electronic aspect or even the utilization of a fan – the technology that’s drawn into that busy area of the home is really quite amazing.”

The tour provides an opportunity to witness firsthand the workman-

ship offered by some of Victoria’s most reputable designers and build-ers, including Jason Good Kitchens, Max Huxley and Emma Dane Design, to name just a few.

The 1,000-plus expected visitors should have a great time viewing some stunning homes.

While the tour always attracts Greater Victoria architecture and design fans, the two-day event is the primary fundraiser for Young Life, a Christian organization that pro-vides teens with a summer camp

opportunity at RockRidge Canyon near Princeton, B.C., and runs vari-ous other local programs for youth at schools and in the community.

Vancouver auto show becoming world classAs the 2015 Vancouver Interna-tional Auto Show fades into our rearview mirror, it’s a good time to reflect on what a fantastic show it was.Yours truly travels all over the world to such exotic locations as Paris, Geneva, Beijing, New York and Frankfurt, for much bigger auto shows. But to me, it is obvious that the setting for the Vancouver show is, hands down, the best around. The Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre is a stunning building; from the huge windows, to the exposed wood and living roof, it is a world-class venue. And with the expansion this year’s show underwent, the Vancouver show is moving into the big leagues. By keeping the lower exhibit hall exclusively for the big auto manufacturers to showcase the latest, shiny cars, and adding the upper main ballroom and concourse locations helped the show breathe and provided flow. As much as the hot new cars get the atten-tion, often the local vendors can create a stir. Like the gang at Fine Vehicles, who buy

left-hand drive Land Rover De-fenders in Europe and then ship them to England to be rebuilt, before they are imported to Canada. The top floor also provided much more walking room for the large crowds to mingle and check out the collection of ex-otic cars or the vintage Corvette collection.It’s the lower floor where the big manufacturers spend a lot of money on elaborate stages to promote the latest and greatest from high-horsepower supercars to fuel sipping environment

vehicles or practical family crossovers.The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is one of this year’s most anticipated cars, with 650hp and a track-ready setup that would make any driver look good. Dodge, not willing to take second seat, actually adds a back seat to its powerhouse Hellcat Charger or Challenger. These two new models come with 707hp and the factory has had to suspend orders so the production can catch up with demand.

Big power may be back but not to worry, the environmentally minded cars were never far from sight. The Vancouver show was chosen to announce the new Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s (AJAC) Green Car of the Year Award. This year’s winner is the Kia Soul Electric Vehicle, providing a practical design with full electric capabilities. Also on display was the Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell vehicle, capable of running on hydrogen, with no tailpipe emission, only water vapour. The hottest trend in the market today is the small crossover vehicles that come in many shapes and sizes, and from all over the world. The Fiat 500X is an example of the latest from Europe, allowing a young family practical, thrifty transportation in a stylish Italian design. Built on the same platform as the new Jeep Renegade, the 500X has more panache and curb appeal.The 2015 Vancouver International Auto Show marked the 95th year of this annual event and it was the biggest and boldest yet.

British Columbia’s Monashee Mountains are renowned for their steep north faces and massive old-growth cedars. While its rugged terrain is largely inac-cessible by road, logging activities have given rise to a network of steep, roughly cut access roads, which the spring thaw recently converted to deep quagmires of confidence-sucking mud, rock, and debris. What fool would attempt to drive a large commercial-style van up these routes of impending doom? Me for one. Mercedes-Benz invited me to explore the capabilities of their Sprinter vans available with four-wheel-drive, or in Mercedes-Benz parlance: 4ETS. In the world of commercial high-roof vans, the Sprinter is the only one

in Canada fit with traction at all four corners. Known technically as 4-wheel Electronic

Traction System, 4ETS is an option on V6 diesel-powered Sprinters, including the dual rear-wheel long wheelbase 3500 model. Expect to pay in the range of $6,000 for the feature, which can be paired with low-range gearing and downhill descent control for those seek-ing to maximize the Sprinter’s off-road fortitude. 4ETS is driver-activated as needed via a dash-mounted switch. When the grit of four-wheel-drive isn’t necessary, the setup enables optimal fuel-economy by returning the vehicle to rear-wheel-drive, thereby reducing fuel-robbing mechanical drag.While active, 4ETS splits torque 35/65 front-to-rear. This ratio doesn’t change

though traction-control and stabili-ty-related programs remain active to improve grip and increase safety. These programs can be disabled should the driver require the ability to spin the wheels in an effort to unglue a stuck Sprinter. Keeping one’s right boot deep into the Sprinter’s turbocharged throttle enabled its four wheels, clad in winter tires, to keep digging for traction while spitting out congealed mud and deleterious earthen material in an effort to supply forward propulsion. And it worked. We battled ruts so deep that the entire underside of the van banged and shud-dered viciously as rocks and buried tree limbs from former logging operations

did their best to impede progress. The ride-height of 4ETS-equipped Sprint-ers is increased by 75 mm (3-in) at the rear and 100 mm (4-in) at the front, which improves the vehicle’s approach and departure angles while also impart-ing a 24-inch wading depth.Interestingly, I didn’t find the additional ride-height detrimental to highway driving. The Sprinter felt exceptionally well anchored to the road and remark-ably secure on its winter rubber, even at high-speed on backroads of broken, patchy pavement. As the only game in town when it comes to four-wheel-drive commercial vans, Mercedes-Benz is keen to roll its high-traction Sprinter into industries

such as mining, logging, construction, and any other work environment locat-ed off the beaten path – and that’s huge in a resource-based province like B.C. The long-chassis Sprinter 3500 with dual rear wheels could easily serve as a roll-ing workshop for trades’ people needing access to work camps where four-wheel-drive wherewithal is essential. Mercedes-Benz will also equip the passenger version of their Sprinter with 4ETS. Ski resorts and lodges, such as the Monashee Lodge, will undoubtedly appreciate the expanded capability. The first time I drove on public roads, I was at the wheel of my then-boy-friend’s Chevy Vega. I remember cresting a hill and gasping sharply with the realization that I was in control. The curvy road splayed out far below wasn’t some carnival ride with someone else at the helm. I couldn’t just close my eyes and wait for the terror to subside. It was up to me. I could coast down and weave gently through the corners or I could squeeze the throttle and feel the rush of accel-eration and adrenaline. As a sixteen-year-old living in a small town, driving meant autonomy. There were plenty of road trips growing up. I remember long hauls from Toronto to North Carolina and Florida with my dad driving. After he and my mom left Italy, they seemed to have an urge to see the new continent they now called home. Driving, I think,

satisfied their curiosity about the world that they wanted to share with us.When we moved back to Europe for a three-year period during my early teen years, the family would venture out each Sunday in our Peugeot 504 to dis-cover a new region. Mom would be in the passenger seat with the maps and my baby brother asleep on her lap.There was always music on those road trips. Music and road trips go together like American interstate highways and bad coffee. Music motivates, keeps you alert and adds to the euphoria of the open road.Some of my fondest memories are of singing with my sister in the back seat of the Peugeot on the winding roads of Central France. Before iPads, iPhones, in-car entertainment systems and satellite radio, there was, Beatles’ songs, ‘Michael, row your boat ashore’, and trying to remember all the words to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.Road games involved spotting license plates from other countries, identifying

makes of vehicles and fighting over whose turn it was to be a leaning post for sleeping baby brother, now in the back seat.I’ve always been interested in cars, roads and travel. I love the growl of a revving eight-cylinder engine. A trans-port truck rolling down the highway at night all lit up just like a small city still gets me excited. I just never imag-ined that those things would be so engrained in my work and in my life. With our automotive event planning business, most days of the year, my husband Garry Sowerby and I are on the road.It was this love of the road that brought us together. We could both relate to the words of Jack Kerouac in his classic ‘On the Road’: “… we were leaving confusion and nonsense behind and performing our one noble function of the time, move.” Our first date was a five-hour return drive to a ‘little spot’ my suitor knew. It must have worked. That was 17

years ago. Being ‘on the road’ is when our best scheming takes place. It’s romantic, soul-cleansing and gives us a sense of the wider world. What about driving, though, actually grip-ping the wheel and pushing the throttle? Forget the destination, the freedom of movement, the road trip, the music. What is driving?It’s that feeling that I got as I whipped a Porsche Boxster S around the tight-tight corners at a racetrack, squeezing through coned gates, powering down straight stretches and hearing the resonant instant-ly-recognizable growl of a Porsche engine. I had never driven faster, with such abandon yet with such intense concentration.

Or maybe I did. The 200 km/h reading on the digital speedometer of the Cadillac ATS I was driving on the back straightaway of one of the fastest, most challenging tracks in North America, Mosport, still flashes in my dreams. None of this compares to driving my very own car, a pristine white 1999 Volkswagen Golf GTI VR6. When I bought it, I knew there were two extra cylinders under the hood than the Golf GL version and that it had an additional 57 horsepower. But when I drive it, I don’t think about horsepower, torque, or fuel economy. Did somebody say ‘road trip’?
