As I write this Field List I find myself wandering between images and memories of our Panama´s Canal Zone tour and, is hard to pick one or a handful of it as favorites. There is a good reason: there were so many highlights! Here I give you few of it. Well before the day broke the chachalacas were committed in communicating their unique parlance and smaller gems such as the Blue

Dacnis and the Red-legged Honeycreeper waited around the bird feeder for the daily fruits. Once bananas were served in both feeders there was an explosion of wings reaching to it, as if someone had called a black Friday deal! But, this didn´t happened without order as a hierarchy among the attendances was followed. If the orange-chinned parakeets were absent, the feeders were packed with tanagers, honeycreepers, thrushes, woodpeckers and other small passerine that kept coming and going as if they were taking turns to enjoy the suit pulp of the bananas. Alas, once the parakeets noticed the feast and reached the feeder there was no room for anyone else but them. The feeders became then packed with about 50 or more of these parakeets and the other species had to wait patiently for them to be gone. Now, there was one species that was brave enough to face the parakeets and chase them away: the Whooping Motmot. Another image that passed through my mind was the number of hummingbirds and, guess what? There was a hierarchy among these small gems as well. The two feeders at our lodge were literally owned by a pair of white-necked jacobins and should any other species attend to visit it, a fiercely attack would come from either of it! But, when these feeder-guards were gone it was the time for the Violet-bellied, Blue-chested and Rufous-tailed hummingbirds to slide their tongue to get revitalized with the suit water in it. And, here comes another experience that pop-out of my mind and I am sure you´ll agree with me that it was a highlight of the tour: the upper deck of the Canopy Tower. There, a parade of birds showed up in organized manner and, in non-stop process. A Cinnamon Woodpecker first landed in the branches of a dead

tree, then a Black-breasted Puffbird sang from midstory followed by the loud but tiny Black-headed Tody-Flycatcher that gave a live concert. How about the astonishing and secretive Green Shrike Vireo that landed right in front of our noses? Now, I am sure that one of the most breathtaking moments of the tour happened when an Ornate Hawk Eagle landed on a huge branch of a tree contiguous to the road as we were coming down the Semaphore Hill allowing shocking scope views. What an exhilarating moment! Well, talking about highlights and other fond memories, think about our visit to the Pipeline road. What a birding site! We came across attilas, woodpeckers, antbirds, antshrikes, antthrushes and much more. A very special moment happened when a Great Jacamar was seen perched at midstory and sang for various minutes. Photographers got superb shots. No tour to Panama would be complete without a visit to the Panama Canal. In the Miraflores visitor center we spent some times learning how the locks work while seeing about 5,000+ turkey vultures migrating, a Peregrine Falcon, few Brown Pelican and two male Magnificent Frigatebird among other species. Our last day found us in the ruins of the first Panama city and here, with the tide of the Pacific Ocean retreating and exposing the mudflats, we met Venicio whom took us to a museum and then to a mudflat where we observed shorebirds, few plovers and a couple of American Avocet. By seeing these migrants we were reminded that many species depend on such network of habitats to survive and that upon our actions is that we can secure the future of the natural areas of our world. Hummingbirds!were!originally!believed!to!be!a!crossed!between!an!insect!and!a!

surpirsing!that!a!demand!started!for!such!fantastic!creatures,!thus!pushing!a!

trade!business!that!shipped!hundreds!of!thousands!of!hummingbirds!skins!into!

Europe.!!By!then,!there!were!no!common!names!associated!to!each!

hummingbird.!So,!how!these!birds!got!such!beautiful!names?!The!person!ton!ame!

all!hummingbirds!was!J.!Gould!on!his!memorable!Monograph!of'Trochilidae!(1849(1861).!But,!did!you!know!that!until!the!publication!of!his!renowned!

monograph!Gould!had!never!seen!a!hummingbird!alive?!!Only!after!finishing!

such!impressive!work!he!visited!the!Americas!in!May!1857!and!saw!his!first!
