The Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin

No. 27 Bar and Lounge at The Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin

In 2007, Richardson received the prestigious commission to create six grand oil paintings to adorn the walls of the No. 27 Bar

and Lounge at Ireland’s most famous hotel, The Shelbourne.

For this commission, Richardson sketched each elevation of St. Stephens’ Green as if viewed from inside the park itself. The

finished works depict the famous Georgian buildings and modern landmarks from the West, North and East while the view

from the South is naturally visible through the windows of the bar itself. These paintings now stand side by side with many

other works by eminent Irish painters which feature throughout the hotel.

Victor Richardson, above in his studio in Cork, carries on the exploration of colour vibration pioneered by Pointillism and Divisionism in the late 19th and early 20th Century. Like Seurat and Signac he intensifies the relationship between colours by placing contrasting pigments beside one another in small strokes, dashes and spots. This tessellation creates a shimmering luminosity of warm and cool hues.

The Enchanted Forest, Co Cork oil on canvas, 24 x 30 inches

Water Cypresses, South Carolina oil on canvas, 24 x 32 inches

Sunlight on the Marsh oil on canvas, 20 x 20 inches

For much of his career, Richardson has painted a recurring motif of trees and water, taking inspiration from the rivers and canals of Ireland, England and France. Across the Atlantic he has been drawn by the ponds and swamps of the Carolina Low Country in the American South, exhibiting regularly in Savannah, Charleston and Charlotte. Often painting into the light, the atmospheric play of colour in the air and on the surface of water, has been a constant source of creativity. His work has a Zen-like quality, tranquil and contemplative.
