About VR SoftWelcome to Victor Reader Soft 2.5. This Digital Talking Book Software is ideal to listen to your favorite best sellers, novels, and magazines. Victor Reader’s friendly interface includes the advanced navigation features, display customization, and much more. In addition to its reading features, Victor Reader synchronizes the text display with voice so you can see the text as it is being read. Also, several different user settings are available and saved automatically so you can customize the software to suit your specific needs. You can easily navigate through the Table of Contents and structure of the book to quickly find the desired information. This software supports all books recorded in the Daisy format, an international standard for digital talking books.You will find several sections providing information on how to install Victor Reader, a table of shortcut keys, a short description on how to read a book, a detailed description of the Application window, its menus and dialog boxes, and information on how to contact HumanWare.

1. Overview of VR Soft

1.1 System requirements The recommended minimum system requirements for Victor Reader are as follows:

1.2 Installation Instructions Use Explorer to open the installation file and follow the onscreen instructions: 1. Welcome screen: Select Next; 2. End-User license agreement: Read the License agreement and select "I accept the terms in the

License Agreement" if you agree with the stipulated conditions. Select Next to continue. 3. Select Installation folder: Select Next to install in default folder or select Browse to change

installation folder. 4. Ready to Install: Press Install to begin installation. 5. Software installed: Once installation is complete, select Finish to close installation window. By default VR Soft will be installed in the Program Files\Humanware\Victor Reader Bookshare.org folder. A shortcut will be placed on the desktop.

2. Victor Reader User InterfaceThe User Interface includes a Title Bar, the Menu Bar, a Toolbar and the Application Window.

2.1 Title BarThe Title Bar is located at the top of the Application window; it shows the application name.

2.2 Menu BarBeneath the Title Bar is the Menu Bar. It contains from left to right the following menus: Book, Find, Navigation, Annotations, Settings, and Help. See Menus section for details.

2.3 ToolbarBeneath the Menu bar is the Toolbar.

The Toolbar is comprised of the following components:

Open Book button: To open a book or update the contents of your bookshelf. Updating bookshelf needs to be done manually upon first use of the application or when adding new books.

Insert Bookmark button: To insert a Bookmark at the current location.

Previous and Next Bookmark buttons: To go to the previous or next Bookmark.

Insert Text Note button: To insert a Text Note at the current location.

Previous and Next Text Note buttons: To go to the previous or next Text Note.

Previous Page icon: to move to the previous page.

Go to Page box and Go button: enter the desired page and press Go or Enter to move to the selected page.

Next page button: to move to the next page.

Font size list box: from the list, select the text font size.

Find box and Go button: enter the text you wish to find and press Go or Enter to move to the selected text.

Rewind, Play/Stop, and Fast forward buttons. To rewind and fast forward, press once to start, and press a second time to end.

Volume button: use the slider to adjust volume.

Speed button: use the slider to adjust speed.

Humanware logo: press to access the Humanware website.

Bookshare logo: press to access the Bookshare website.

When moving the mouse cursor over these icons, Victor Reader will display and announce the corresponding tooltip.

2.4 Application WindowThe Victor Reader Application Window is divided into two views: the Global Navigation View on the left and the Text View on the right. To move back and forth between these views, press the Tab or Shift + Tab keys.

2.4.1 Global Navigation View The Global Navigation View is comprised of 2 tabs. The first displays the book’s heading structure, the other shows the annotations list. The Global Navigation View can be resized in the Settings Menu under the Layout option. Use the Up or Down arrows to select the navigation element. When selecting an item in the Global Navigation View, the Text View scrolls to the corresponding position in the text.

2.4.2 Text ViewThe Text View is located to the right of the Global Navigation View and can be resized in the Settings Menu under the Layout option. The Text View displays the contents of the book currently being read. When reading a book, you will find that the current section will be highlighted and the book position in the Text View will be synchronized with the Global Navigation View. When reading a book, the display will scroll down, moving the cursor or highlighting the text according to the book’s indexing, letting you see the text as it is being read. In DAISY mode, use the Up or Down arrows to select the navigation element and the Left or Right arrows to move to the previous or next items. You can also use your mouse to set the current position in the book. If in Text mode, pressing the arrows will move the cursor in the selected direction.

3. Using Victor Reader 3.1 Reading a bookTo read a book, select the toolbar’s Open Book icon. Alternatively from the Book menu, select the Open Book option (Control + O). Once the Open book dialog is open, you can use the Browse path button to select a specific location or select the desired source (Favorites or known locations) from the Source list box.

The Bookshelf list box will display all the books available on the selected source. Navigate through the books listed using the up and down arrow keys or the scrollbar. When scrolling through the list, you will hear the book titles listed. Stop at the desired book. To open a book, press Enter, the book will open, the Text View will appear and Victor Reader will announce the title of the book.

Note that when you select the Open Book option, any book that is already open will be automatically closed. You can only have one book open at any given time.

3.2 Text to Speech settings and Message outputText and application messages can be heard using different Text-to-speech engines. You can also determine if messages will be heard or not.

To silence application messages (or to turn them back on), go to the Settings menu, select Audio. From the Messages submenu, select Text-to-Speech or No speech. To change the Text-To-Speech voice, from the Settings Menu choose Audio - TTS Settings option. Then select the desired voice from the installed Text-to-Speech engines. You can also modify the Speed and Volume of the selected TTS voice selected. These modifications will affect messages and text reading.

3.3 Basic Functions3.3.1 Play/Stop, Fast Forward, RewindTo start reading, press Play/Stop (Spacebar) Victor Reader will start reading at the current position in your book. You can stop reading at any time by pressing Play/Stop again. Press and hold F to Fast Forward. To Rewind, press and hold the R key. You can also use the icons on the toolbar.

3.3.2 Adjusting the volume (V, Shift + V) and reading speed (S, Shift + S)To adjust the volume, select the appropriate option from the Settings Menu or press V to increase or Shift + V to decrease the volume from 0 to 10. Similarly, the reading speed can be adjusted in the Settings Menu or using the S key to increase and the Shift + S keys to decrease the speed from –3 to 10.

3.3.3 Setting user preferencesOnce the Volume and the Reading Speed are set, you can adjust the text color, background color, font and font size in all views. To set your preferences, select the Display/Font submenu item from the Settings Menu. See Settings Menu section for details. Please note that your settings will be saved for your next session. Settings can also be customized for each user in the User Profile dialog box (Control + U). Here is a list of parameters that will be saved in the User Profile: Current position in book, Annotations, Open book favorites list, Background and text color, Font name, Font size, Font style, Frame and views sizes, Playback mode, Message mode, Speed, Text-to-speech voice name, Volume, Mapping mode, Last book read location.

3.3.4 Setting Sleep ModeThe Sleep Mode (9) key lets you program a delay period after which Victor Reader will stop playing. Press the 9 key to program a stopping delay of 15 minutes. Each additional “Sleep Mode” keystroke will add 15 minutes delay, up to a maximum of 60 minutes. The next key press will disable the Sleep Mode (Sleep off) and the cycle starts over.

3.3.5 Changing, closing the current bookTo close a book without exiting Victor Reader, select the toolbar’s Open Book icon. Alternatively from the Book menu select Close book (Control +F4) or the Open Book option (Control + O) and press Cancel. To change the current book, from the Open Book dialog select a new book.

3.3.6 Exiting Victor Reader To exit the application, go to the Book menu and select Exit (ALT + F4). When exiting Victor Reader, your position, annotations and user settings will be saved for your next session in the same book.

3.4 NavigationThere are a number of navigation options available such as: Go to Page (G), Go to Heading (Control + G) Go to Annotation (A), Go to Text Note (T), Go to Quick Bookmark (Q), Go to Bookmark (B), Go to the Beginning of book (Control + Home) and Go to the End of book (Control + End). You can also navigate by element or level.

3.4.1 Element You can select the navigation element in the Navigation Menu or use the Up and Down arrows when you are in the Global Navigation and Text View. To move to the next or previous element use the Right and Left arrows. Victor Reader will announce the selected element, then move to the selected element and start reading. Victor Reader allows you to navigate by Page, Phrase, Levels 1 to 6, or any other existing indexed element defined by the book producer. These differ from book to book but typically level 1 means chapter, level 2 means section, and so on. The page element may not be present on all books. The phrase level is usually the smallest navigation element but the book producer may define otherwise. The phrase level is always provided but its extent depends on the book producer.

3.5 AnnotationsAnnotations include Bookmarks, Highlights and Text Notes. Access the Annotations menu to insert, delete or go to an annotation at any time when reading a book.

You can also insert a Quick Bookmark (Control + Q) to save the location where you stopped reading. Press Control + Q until you hear "Quick Bookmark inserted". To go to a Quick Bookmark, press Q. You will hear "Reaching Quick Bookmark", Victor Reader will start reading from the quick bookmark’s location. See Annotations Menu section for details.

4. MenusThe Victor Reader Menus include the following: Book, Find, Navigation, Annotations, Settings, and Help.

4.1 Book Menu (Alt + B)The Book Menu contains the following options: Open book (Control + O), Close book, Info, and Exit.

4.1.1 Open (Control + O) When starting Victor Reader or when choosing this option from the Book Menu (Control + O), the Open Book dialog will open. Victor Reader will close the currently opened book, if any, before bringing up the Open Book dialog. Select the book source. Books can be found on Local drives, Network Drives or Favorites. When using Victor Reader for the first time, or when adding new books, you need to update the bookshelf manually. Use the arrow keys to go to the desired book from the list. To select, press Enter, or TAB to reach the Open button and press Enter. NOTE: When starting Victor Reader, the User Profile Dialog will open if there is more than one user profile.

4.1.1.1 Book Dialog BoxThe Open Book dialog consists of the Source box, the Browse path button, the Bookshelf list box, and seven buttons as follows: The Add to Favorites, Update Bookshelf, Delete book, Add All to Favorites, Delete from Favorites, Cancel and Open buttons.

NOTE: When selecting Favorites, Victor Reader will disable the Add to Favorites and Add All to Favorites buttons and enable the Delete from Favorites button. When selecting books from the Bookshelf, the Open button becomes active. Pressing Enter will open the selected book.

4.1.1.2 Source BoxThe Source Box is located on the upper part of the dialog box, allowing you to select the source where Victor Reader will look for books.

4.1.1.3 Browse Path ButtonThe Browse Path button is located on the right of the Source box. It opens the Browse Path dialog allowing the user to choose a specific path to look for books.Browse Path dialog: The Look In edit box is located on the upper part of the Browse Path dialog and shows the path to the selected folder. Beneath the Look In edit box, you will find a tree view Folders/Drivers box, which shows the available folders and drives. At the bottom, are the Ok and Cancel buttons. The following is the order in which these items appear when using the TAB key: The Look In edit box, Folders/drives tree view box, Ok button, and Cancel button.

4.1.1.4 Bookshelf BoxThe Bookshelf box lists all the available books in the selected source (local drives, Network Drives or Favorites). When selecting Favorites, Victor Reader will list all the books that have been added to the Favorites book list (Add to Favorites or Add All to Favorites buttons). To navigate through the available sources, use the mouse or Up/Down arrows.

4.1.1.5 Open Book Dialog ButtonsBeneath the Bookshelf box you will find seven buttons as follows:

The Add to Favorites button: adds the selected (highlighted) book found in the Bookshelf to the Favorites books list. The Update Bookshelf button: When selecting the Local, or Network Drives source, use this button to search for Daisy format books and add them to the bookshelf manually. You only need to update the bookshelf manually when using Victor Reader the first time or when adding new books. The Delete book button: allows you to delete the selected book. The Add All to Favorites button: adds all books from the Bookshelf list to the Favorites book list. The Delete from Favorites button: deletes a highlighted book from the Favorites book list. The Cancel button: closes the Open Book dialog box without making any modifications.

The Open button: opens and reads a selected book in the Bookshelf box. Alternatively, press Enter to open the highlighted book.

4.1.2 Close Book (Control + F4) Use this option to close a book.

4.1.3 Info (I) The Info option is used to get information regarding the book and application. The first time you select this item from the menu or press the I key, you will hear the information in the following order: the book title, total number of pages, number of headings, the total time of the book, time elapsed, time remaining, the total number of annotations (bookmarks and text notes), and Victor Reader version.

When reselecting this item from the menu or pressing I again, you will hear sequentially the information one element at a time in the order listed above. If you press I once, you will hear the book title. If you press it twice, you will hear the total number of pages, and so on when it reaches the end of the list, it will restart from the beginning again.

4.1.4 Exit Victor Reader (ALT + F4)Use this option to exit Victor Reader.

4.2 Find menu (Alt + F)The Find Menu contains the following options: Find (Control + F), and Find next (F3).

4.2.1 Find (Control + F) The Find option is used to search for the desired text in a book. Select this option from the Find Menu, (or Control + F). From the Find dialog box, type the desired words or characters in the Find field. To narrow your search, check the Match case and/or Titles only check box. You can also select the search direction, Up or Down. Press the Find button to start searching. Victor Reader will search for the next occurrence of the entered words or characters and will move to that location, if found. Press Play/Stop to read from the new location or press F3 to find the next occurrence. To exit without searching, press Cancel. The following is the order in which these items will appear when using the TAB key: the Find edit box (default), Find button, Match case check box, Titles only check box, Direction Up/Down group, and Cancel button. To make a selection, press the Spacebar. The default direction for searches is down. Note that you can also use the Find box from the toolbar to locate a string of words or characters in the text.

4.2.2 Find Next (F3) The Find Next option is used to search for the next occurrence of the entered words or characters in the Find field. Press Play/Stop (Spacebar) to start reading from the new location.

The Navigation Menu contains: the Next Element, Previous Element, Navigation Element (which lists Levels 1 to 6, Phrase, Sentence, Line, Word, Character), Go To Page, Go To Heading, Beginning of Book, End of Book, Where Am I?

4.3.1 Next Element (Right arrow) Use this option to go to the next selected element in the Navigation Element Submenu. Select the Next Element option from the Navigation Menu or use the Right arrow.

4.3.2 Previous Element (Left arrow) Use this option to return to the previous selected element in the Navigation Element Submenu. Select the Previous Element option from the Navigation Menu or use the Left arrow.

4.3.3 Navigation Element (Up and Down arrows)The Navigation Element submenu consists of Level 1 to 6, Page, Phrase, Sentence, Line, Word and Character. It allows you to select the desired navigation element. You can select these elements using your mouse as they are listed in the Navigation Menu / Navigation Element Submenu, or using the Up and Down arrows. When scrolling, you will hear the selected element each time pressing the Up and Down arrow keys and it will start at the beginning when reaching the end of the list. Note that Victor Reader will only list the choices available in the current book. You can also use the Right and Left arrows to move by the selected element.

4.3.4 Go to Page (G) The Go to Page option is used to reach a specific page in the book. Choose this option from the Navigation Menu (or G), type in the page number and press Play/Stop to start reading or Enter to move to the new position. Victor Reader will go to the requested page and announce the page number. If the entered page number does not exist, you will be told that "Page X doesn’t exist", where X is the page number and Victor Reader will move back to 5 pages before the requested number if possible. If the book does not contain any pages, Victor Reader will inform you of this fact. To cancel, press Escape.

4.3.5 Go to Heading (Control + G) The Go to Heading option is used to reach a specific heading in the book. Choose this option from the Navigation Menu (or Control + G), type in the heading number of your choice and press Play/Stop to start reading or Enter to move to the new position. Victor Reader will go to and announce the requested heading.

4.3.6 Beginning of Book (Control + Home) When selecting this option from the Navigation Menu, (Control + Home), you will hear "Beginning of book", and Victor Reader will move to the beginning of the book.

4.3.7 End of Book (Control + End) When selecting this option from the Navigation Menu, (Control + End), you will hear "End of book", and Victor Reader will move to the end of the book.

4.3.8 Where Am I? (W) When selecting the Where Am I? option from the Navigation Menu (W), Victor Reader will give you information regarding the current position in the book: the page number, heading number, and section title.

4.4.1 Quick Bookmark You can insert a Quick Bookmark to save the location where you stopped reading. The Quick Bookmark option contains: Go to Quick Bookmark and Insert Quick Bookmark. You can only insert one Quick Bookmark in a book.

4.4.1.1 Go to Quick Bookmark (Q)To go to the Quick Bookmark, select Go to Quick Bookmark (or Q) from the Quick Bookmark submenu. You will hear "Reaching Quick Bookmark", Victor Reader will start reading from the Quick Bookmark’s location.

4.4.1.2 Insert Quick Bookmark (Control + Q)To insert a Quick Bookmark, select Insert Quick Bookmark (or Control + Q) from the Quick Bookmark submenu. You will hear the message "Quick bookmark inserted". Each Quick Bookmark replaces the previous as only one Quick Bookmark is possible per book.

4.4.2 All Annotations (Bookmarks, Highlights and Text Notes)The All Annotations option contains the following options: Go to Annotation, Annotation view, Remove Annotation, and Remove All Annotations. It allows you to reach annotations, display a list of the annotations, remove an annotation, or remove all the annotations in a book.

4.4.2.1 Go to AnnotationTo go to a specific annotation, select Go to Annotation from the All Annotations submenu and type in the annotation number. Press Play/Stop to start reading. Press Enter to go to the selected bookmark/highlight or to display the text note window.

4.4.2.2 Annotation View This option allows you to access the Global Navigation View's list of all annotations found in the book. Selecting an annotation (a bookmark, highlight or text note) will move the Text view to that annotation's position in the book.

4.4.2.3 Remove Annotation To remove a specific annotation, select Remove Annotation from the All Annotations submenu, type in the annotation number, and press Enter. You will hear the message "Annotation X removed" where X is the number of the annotation.

4.4.2.4 Remove All Annotations Select this option to delete all annotations found in the selected book. This will delete all bookmarks, highlights and text notes.

4.4.3 Bookmark The Bookmark submenu contains: Go to Bookmark, Insert Bookmark, and Remove Bookmark.

4.4.3.1 Go to Bookmark (B) To go to a specific bookmark, select Go to Bookmark from the Bookmark submenu, (or B), type in the bookmark number, press Play/Stop to start reading at the bookmark position or press Enter to go to the selected bookmark. If the bookmark doesn’t exist, you will hear the "Bookmark X doesn’t exist" message where X is the number of the bookmark. You can also go to the next or previous Bookmark by selecting the appropriate toolbar icon.

4.4.3.2 Insert Bookmark (Control + B) To insert a bookmark, select the Bookmark icon or select the Insert Bookmark option from the Bookmark submenu, (Control + B), type in the bookmark number, and press Enter to confirm. When pressing Enter without entering a number, a new bookmark number will be automatically selected. You will hear the "Bookmark X inserted" message where X is the number of the bookmark. If the number is already assigned to a bookmark you will hear "Bookmark already exists".

4.4.3.3 Remove Bookmark (Shift + B) To remove a specific bookmark, select Remove Bookmark (Shift + B) from the Bookmark submenu, type in the desired bookmark number, and press Enter to confirm. You will hear the "Bookmark X removed" message where X is the number of the bookmark. If the bookmark doesn’t exist, you will hear the "Bookmark X doesn’t exist" message where X is the number of the bookmark.

4.4.4 HighlightThe Highlight submenu contains: Go to Highlight, Insert Highlight, Remove Highlight.

4.4.4.1 Go to highlight (H)To go to a specific highlight, select Go to Highlight from the Highlight submenu (or H), type in the highlight number, press Play/Stop to start reading at the highlight position or press Enter to go to the selected highlight. If the highlight doesn’t exist, you will hear the "Highlight X doesn’t exist" message where X is the number of the highlight. You can also go to the next or previous Highlight by selecting the appropriate toolbar icon.

4.4.4.2 Insert highlight (Control + H)To highlight a passage of text, use the mouse or keyboard arrows to select the text. Select the Insert Highlight option from the Highlight submenu, (Control + H), type in the highlight number, and press Enter to confirm. When pressing Enter without entering a number, a new highlight number will be automatically selected. You will hear the "Highlight X inserted" message where X is the number of the highlight. If the number is already assigned to a highlight you will hear "Highlight already exists".

4.4.4.3 Remove highlight (Shift + H)To remove a specific highlight, select Remove Highlight (Shift + H) from the Highlight submenu, type in the desired highlight number, and press Enter to confirm. You will hear the "Highlight X removed" message where X is the number of the highlight. If the Highlight doesn’t exist, you will hear the "Highlight X doesn’t exist" message where X is the number of the Highlight.

4.4.5 Text Note The Text Note submenu contains: Go to Text Note, Insert Text Note, Remove Text Note, and Text Note List. It allows you to reach a desired text note, remove a text note and hear a list of all the text notes in the book.

4.4.5.1 Go to Text Note (T) To go to a specific text note, select Go to Text Note (or T) from the Text Note submenu, type in the text note number, and press Enter. Victor Reader will display the Text Note dialog, allowing you to enter the text note label and content. Once you have finished, press OK to save the modifications and close the dialog or the Esc key to cancel the modifications and exit the dialog. If the text note does not exist, you will hear the message "Text note X doesn’t exist".

4.4.5.2 Insert Text Note (Control + T) To insert a text note, select the Text Note icon or select the Insert Text Note option from the Text Note submenu (Control + T), type in the text note number and press Enter. The Text Note dialog will appear,

allowing you to enter the text note label and contents. Once finished, press OK to save and close the window or the Esc key to cancel and exit the dialog. You will then hear the "Text note X inserted" message where X is the number of the text note. If the number is already assigned to a text note you will hear "Text note already exists".

4.4.5.3 Remove Text Note (Shift + T) To remove a specific text note, select Remove Text Note (Shift + T) from the Text Note submenu, type in the text note number, and press Enter. You will hear the "Text Note X removed" message where X is the text note number. If the text note doesn’t exist, you will hear the "Text note X doesn’t exist" message.

4.4.5.4 Export Text NotesTo activate the Export Text Notes option, select it from the Text Note submenu found in the Annotation menu. This will allow you to export the text notes entered in the current book. This is useful if you want to access your notes outside the application. When activated, the Export Text Notes dialog appears. You will need to determine where you wish to save your text notes. Use the Tab key to cycle through the available options: the current default save location, drives/folders, file name, file type, and the OK and Cancel buttons.

4.4.5.5 Text Note dialog boxThe Text Note dialog box contains: a Label Edit box (to enter the text note label), a Content Edit box (to enter the text note contents). At the bottom, you will find the Ok and Cancel buttons. The following is the order in which these items appear when using the TAB key: The Label edit box, Content edit box, Ok button, and Cancel button.The Ok button: To save the text note content and close the dialog.The Cancel button: To cancel the operation and close the dialog.

4.5 Settings MenuThe Settings Menu contains: Audio (which contains: Messages, TTS Settings, Shortcut announcements), Display (which contains: Font, layout and Text synchronization), and User Profile. The Messages submenu menu contains: (Text-To-Speech, No Speech).

4.5.1 Audio The Audio Menu contains: Messages (Text-To-Speech, No Speech), TTS Settings and Shortcut announcements.

4.5.1.1 Messages

4.5.1.1.1 Text-To-Speech (TTS)When selecting Text-To-Speech (TTS), the selected voice in the Text-To-Speech Settings dialog will be used to announce messages. See the TTS Settings section for details.

4.5.1.1.2 No SpeechWhen No Speech is selected, Victor Reader messages and menus become muted.

4.5.1.2 TTS SettingsUse this option to select the desired voice from the available TTS engines to announce Victor Reader messages. Select the Text-to-Speech Settings option to open a dialog box that allows you to change the TTS settings. The user can hear the changes as parameters are modified. Beneath this list are: the Speed (-5 to 10), and Pitch (0 to 10) edit boxes. At the bottom you will find the Ok and Cancel buttons. The following is the order in which these items will appear when using the TAB key: The Engine list, Voice list, Speed edit box, and Pitch edit box. Note that the spinners are not part of the tab browsing and are only accessible using the mouse.The Ok button: To save the changes and close the dialog.The Cancel button: To cancel the operation and close the dialog.

4.5.2 Display The Display submenu contains: Font, Layout and Text Synchronization.

4.5.2.1 FontThe Font option is used to modify the font appearance and background color.

4.5.2.1.1 Fonts settings (Control + P)Select the Font option (Control + P) to open the Font options dialog. This allows the user to set the User Display preferences.

Under Selected name, you will find predefined settings. The preview window displays how the text will appear.

Press New to create new text settings or Edit to modify existing settings. Adjust the various settings and view the results in the Preview window. Press Clear to start over if you are not satisfied with the results, or press OK to accept the settings and apply them to the current text. Press the Cancel button to close the dialog box without applying any changes.

The following is the order in which items will appear using the TAB key: The Selected name Edit box, Text color combo menu, Background color combo menu, Font style combo box, Font size combo box, Font name combo box, Clear button, OK button, and Cancel button.

4.5.2.2 Layout (Control + S) Use this option to modify the width of the Navigation and Text view windows. Adjusting one value will automatically modify the other.

4.5.2.3 Text Synchronization Use this option to determine how the text onscreen will be synchronized with the text being read. You can opt to have the cursor move as the text is read or have the current selection highlighted as reading progresses.

4.5.3 User Profile (Control + U)When starting Victor Reader, if there is more than one user profile available or when choosing the User Profile option from the Settings Menu (Control + U), the User Profile dialog will open. It allows you to select, add or remove different user profiles to or from the list. On the left of the dialog you will find a User List that contains all the available user profiles. On the right you will find the Add, Remove, Ok and Cancel buttons. The following is the order in which these items will appear when using the TAB key: The User list, Add button, Remove button, Ok button, and Cancel button.The User list: displays available user profiles.The Add button: adds a new profile “USER XX”.The Remove button: removes a selected profile (except the DEFAULT user).The Ok button: loads a selected profile and closes dialog.The Cancel button: closes the dialog.

NOTE: Note that any new settings will be automatically saved to the current profile and applied during the next session. If you want to keep your current settings you will need to add a new user profile to save the new settings.Use the Up and Down arrows to browse the user profile list, or select to highlight the desired user. Select OK to load the chosen (highlighted) profile settings and close the dialog. To add a new profile, select the Add button. A new user profile containing the new current settings will be added to the list. To delete a profile, select a user profile from the list and press Remove. Please note that you cannot delete or change the default user profile’s name. Press Cancel to exit and close the dialog box without making any changes. NOTE: When changing a user profile, Victor Reader will close the current book and load the selected user profile settings.

4.6 Help MenuThe Help Menu contains: Key Describer (D), User Guide (F1) About Victor Reader, About Daisy, and About Bookshare.org.

4.6.1 Key Describer (D) The Key Describer feature allows the user to hear the function associated with each of Victor Reader's keys (buttons). This is especially helpful when learning how to use the software. It can also act as a memory aid. To activate the Key Describer Mode, select this option from the Help Menu (or press D). To disable the Key Describer Mode press D again or reselect it from the Help Menu.

4.6.2 User guide (F1) Select this option from the Help Menu (or press F1) to access the User guide.

4.6.3 About Victor ReaderSelect this option from the Help menu to obtain information on the application such as copyright information and software version number.

4.6.4 About DaisySelect this option to obtain information on the Daisy Consortium.

4.6.5 About Bookshare.orgSelect this option to obtain information about Bookshare.org.
