“AUSTRALIAN CATHOLICS “

This latest edition of this magazine is availa-

ble in the foyer of the Church. It is dedicated

to the 7 Sacraments and explores God’s pres-

ence in the experience of Catholics at every

stage of their lives. I enjoyed the stories of

young people talking about their experiences

of confession and confirmation, two genera-

tions of a family discussing life, love and the

sacrament of marriage etc. I refreshed my

knowledge of our Sacraments and learnt

some…. Pick up a copy at the end of Mass

EASTER: THROUGH THE OCTAVE AND

BEYOND!

While Easter is a Solemnity

and an Octave Feast, it is

also a 50-day journey until

Pentecost.

We continue to remember

His resurrection with special devotion. Saint

Augustine shares this perspective: "The sea-

son before Easter signifies the troubles in

which we live here and now, while the time

after Easter, which we are celebrating at pre-

sent, signifies the happiness that will be ours

in the future."

During the season of Easter our particular

focus is on a hope beyond this world - a hope

that is a great equalizer for those who are

infirm or healthy, rich or poor. It is a hope that

transcends our current situation with the hope

of something better and eternal!

Anthony DeStefano, in his book "Travel

Guide to Heaven" says that any discussion of

heaven needs to include fun. "It's a place of

unlimited pleasure, unlimited happiness and

unlimited joy!" Now, that's worth thinking

about, worth celebrating and worth telling

others.

( excerpted from Catholic on line)

ALLELUIA

In the Roman Rite, the

word "Alleluia" is associat-

ed with joy and is especially

favoured in Paschal time,

the time between Easter

and Pentecost, perhaps because of the asso-

ciation of the Hallel (Alleluia psalms) chanted

at Passover.

During this time, the word is added widely to

verses and responses associated with pray-

ers, to antiphons of psalms, and, during the

Octave of Easter and on Pentecost Sunday,

to the dismissal at the end of Mass.

ST JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE

Feastday April 7th

St John Baptist de la Salle

was known for his work with

the poor and was very in-

volved with the education of

poor children.

John Baptist de La Salle was a pioneer in

founding training colleges for teachers, re-

form schools for delinquents, technical

schools, and secondary schools for modern

languages, arts, and sciences.

‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb’ she said ‘and we don’t know where they have put him.’So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb. They ran together, but the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first; he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying on the ground, but did not go in. Simon Peter who was following now came up, went right into the tomb, saw the linen cloths on the ground, and also the cloth that had been over his head; this was not with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed. Till this moment they had failed to understand the teaching of scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

EVANGELII GAUDIUM “Politics, though often denigrated, remains a lofty vocation and one of the highest forms of charity, inasmuch as it seeks the common good.”

Para 205 from Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis, Nov. 24, 2013

WORDS OF WISDOMThe nation doesn’t simply need what we have. It needs what we are.

St Edith Stein

SAINT OF THE WEEKSt Stanislaus (April 11)

Anyone who reads the history of Eastern Europe cannot help but chance on the name of Stanislaus, the saintly but tragic bishop of Kraków, patron of Poland. He is remembered with Saints Thomas More (June 22) and Thomas Becket (December 29) for vigorous opposition to the evils of an unjust government.

Born in Szczepanow near Kraków on July 26, 1030, he was ordained a

(Continued from page 1) priest after being educated in the cathedral schools of Gniezno, then capital of Poland, and at Paris. He was appointed preacher and archdeacon to the bishop of Kraków, where his eloquence and example brought about real conversion in many of his penitents, both clergy and laity. He became bishop of Kraków in 1072. During an expedition against the Grand Duchy of Kiev, Stanislaus became involved in the political situation of Poland. Known for his outspokenness, he aimed his attacks at the evils of the peasantry and the king, especially the unjust wars and immoral acts of King Boleslaus II. The king first excused himself, then made a show of penance, then relapsed into his old ways. Stanislaus continued his open opposition in spite of charges of treason and threats of death, finally excommunicating the king. The latter, enraged, ordered soldiers to kill the bishop. When they refused, the king killed him with his own hands. Forced to flee to Hungary, Boleslaus supposedly spent the rest of his life as a penitent in the Benedictine abbey in Osiak.
