It ’s definitely the happiest time of the year, and we want you to have the most wonderful season by helping you make the right holiday choices. Whether you’re looking for a gift for your loved one or searching for the right outfit for a special event, we’ve compiled a good number of options for you.

Gracing our cover this issue are members of the A-Team, the dance troupe which conquered the World Hip Hop Dance Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada a few months ago. It was a pleasure to work with them as they are brimming with joy and energy. They’re such passionate kids that we cannot help but be inspired by their commitment to their craft and their loyalty to each other.

In our story, members of the A-Team are very candid about how much they value and appreciate each other. This season, let’s be equally thoughful, and show our deepest appreciation to those nearest and dearest to our hearts. Happy holidays!

cover story

If you haven’t seen the A-Team’s winning performance at the World Hip Hop Dance Championship in Las Vegas last August 2014,

then do yourself a favor: Watch it now! Seeing 38 dancers move to the beat in perfect harmony is just incredible. As one group glides on the floor, another makes cartwheels around the stage. That it must have taken hours and hours of practice to get everything nice and precise is a foregone conclusion.

Raphael Nava, one of the group’s pioneering members, reveals that it took the group almost a year to train for their latest competition. The hours spent on perfecting every move not only meant time away from their studies, but also time away from their family and friends. But Rapha

and his teammates Jose Miguel Generoso, Angela Rayos Del Sol, and Elena Virata insist that it was all worth it.

The World Hip Hop Dance Championship is but the latest of competitions where the A-Team emerged as victors. Led by two coaches, Angelica and MJ Arda, the group placed second at the Slimmers World Step-Up Philippines in 2011, second at the World Supremacy Battlegrounds 2012 Varsity Division in Sydney, and champion at the World Supremacy Battlegrounds 2013 Varsity Division, also in Sydney.

INTO THE GROOVERapha wasn’t always a dancer. He was actually a football player. By chance, he just happened to see a group of boys dancing hip hop on the school grounds and he

thought, “Wow! I want to be like them!”

JJ also stumbled onto dancing in the same way. Seeing the Hataw dance group of Claret School do their thing, he says, “I was inspired by them. I just tried it, I didn’t study [dance].”

While Rapha and JJ didn’t have any professional training, Angela and Elena had devoted themselves to dance at an early age. Angela started out when she was five years old, taking lessons at the Halili-Cruz School of Ballet in Quezon City. She moved on to Ballet Philippines, spending nine years with the dance company. Eventually, however, she says, “I got bored. It was too linear, too boxed, so I started exploring and discovered streetdance, hip hop.”

Elena started dancing when she was about five years

old too. She says, “I like to move. I love music.” Being able to interpret music through dance, for Elena, is just one of the best things in the world.

That these kids are passionate about their craft is an understatement.

JJ says, “Dancing makes me happy. It’s my passion.”

Angela shares, “Dance is like my escape from reality. Most of us have school or work, but when you’re dancing, you

temporarily forget about it. For that moment when you’re on stage or when you’re training with the people you love, everything is so much lighter.”

“Dancing expresses what words cannot,” Rapha adds. “When you dance, you just don’t move your body. It jives with your emotions. After a stressful day, you can dance it out, and you feel lighter. If you feel good, you can also share your joy through dancing.”

BUSTING OUTFrom a small group of 13 members, the A-Team has grown into a champion 50-member troupe.

Elena recalls, “The first time I competed was hell. It was the first time we were sent to Vegas in 2012, and it was very rough. We had training

every day for four months. I wasn’t as good as the rest so I had to push myself, but it was a good experience. Competing is difficult. It’s challenging. You train hard for those three minutes, but knowing that you gave your best, you feel fulfilled.”

Dance has brought these young terpsichoreans so much joy and fulfillment. But these are merely icing on the cake. For Rapha, JJ, Angela, and Elena, the camaraderie that the group has developed over the years is priceless.

JJ shares, “They’re always there for me, the A-Team. Every time I’m sad, they make me happy.”

“I never thought that it would become this big,” Elena says of the A-Team. She adds, “The team members, they’re genuine people. I love being around them. They’re kind-hearted. It’s nice.”

Angela says, “The A-Team bond is so strong. I didn’t know that it was possible to be this close. I consider them my family. In Vegas, we were

together for two weeks but we never got tired of each other.”

Loyalty to one another, and a firm desire to do what’s best for the team, says Rapha, is what has kept the A-Team together. And when game time comes, such camaraderie counts, a lot.

TriNoma is a favorite destination among the young crowd, including the hip hop dance champions, the A-Team. Every Sunday, Jose Miguel Generoso and his family go to TriNoma to dine out and watch moviews. Bigoli is one of their favorite dining places. Elena Virata says, “I like going here in TriNoma. I love the food. I like the movie houses; the theaters are big.” Raphael Nava adds, “TriNoma caters to all. Everyone’s here. Everything’s here, from food to apparel. It is accessible and convenient.”

DANCE OFF!Inspired by their favorite dance moves, our

bloggers put together ensembles from Penshoppe and Skechers, and swing to their favorite tunes!

KISTY MEAWhen Kisty started blogging about 12 years ago, she never thought that it would open a world of exciting experiences and opportunities for her. She says, “There are so many things I love about blogging, such as sharing what I know, meeting new friends, and even going to new places!”

One of her most memorable experiences: winning the Big Blog Exchange challenge. She says, “The contest was about two things I love: blogging and travel, and to be selected as one of its ambassadors is definitely an experience I could never ever forget. Bonus points for the fact that I was able to go to the United Kingdom!”

It isn’t surprising to find out then that this spirited soul loves hip hop. “I've tried ballet and jazz in the past, and they're fun but not as thrilling like street dancing,” she says.

HER LOOK“I wanted a look that’s hip but easy to move around, because it’s important to be comfortable when you’re dancing. For Penshoppe, I chose unique but versatile pieces, ideal for someone who wants to build (or rebuild) their wardrobe. For Skechers, I opted for something girlier but still comfortable to wear. It’s also a versatile outfit, something you can wear going to casual events.”

“I love TriNoma for its accessibility. It’s easy to spot when you drive along EDSA, and easy to reach by commute. I also love malls with a lot of stores, so I have a lot of choices — from clothes, makeup, furniture and so on. As for my favorite store? Oh, this is tough but I have to say

it’s Powerbooks or National Book Store.”

SARAH TIRONALike most bloggers, Sarah Tirona thought it would be fun to have an online diary. She explains, “I noticed that I was beginning to let myself go after giving birth to my daughter so I decided to document my outfits every day to keep myself on track. So far it’s worked and I love that I am also able to reach out and inspire other women who find themselves in the same situation.”

Sarah didn’t realize how her blog had affected others until somebody asked to have a picture taken with her. She explains, “At first I thought they were asking me to take their photo so I said okay and got their camera. I was ready to shoot and they had to explain to me that they wanted me in the picture with them... I am extremely flattered but it still feels kinda odd.”

Asked to name her favorite dance, Sarah says, “I have two left feet so I guess my favorite would have to be “the robot.” Kidding aside, I think the waltz is a beautiful dance. It has this old world, timeless, and sincere charm that’s tough to beat.”

HER LOOK“I always consider comfort first before fashion. My outfits are usually comprised of comfortable basics with interesting and fresh cuts and silhouettes in a neutral palette. I wear a lot of blacks, whites, and grays with an occasional pop of color if I feel like it...usually from my shoes or bag.”

“I love how TriNoma carries a wide assortment of fashionable

brands for every budget. Penshoppe has really good

jeans, they fit like a glove and the shape is great and super flattering for petite women.”

DELICIOUS Endings Dessert is undoubtedly the

most fun part of every meal. Feast on these delicious dessert choices at TriNoma.

A French-Asian bakery filled with fresh-from-the-oven baked goods, Tous Les Jours is definitely a favorite among the young crowd. Apart from its milk buns, pastry twists, macarons, pies, and waffles, this franchise also offers cakes which are just too cute to eat! Strawberry Inspiration looks like a big, juicy strawberry only it ’s made of soft bread, dusted with strawberry and green tea powder, and laced with low fat cream. The Cutie Bear Cake, one of their bestsellers, is a lovely chocolate treat dolled up like an adorable bear. You must also try Cookie Cream Cheesecake, which is low fat and adorned with crunchy cookies.Tous Les Jours, Ground Level Garden Restaurants

It is the perfect picker upper treat, a soft, pillowy doughnut with a sweet glazing which just happily melts in your mouth! We are, of course, talking about Krispy Kreme’s Original Glazed doughnut. Along with Chocolate Iced Glazed and New York Cheesecake, Original Glazed remains popular among TriNoma mallers. Recently, Krispy Kreme introduced Baked Creations, a selection of appetizing mini-meals, from Baked Classic Kruffin and Double Chocolate Kruffin to Bacon and Cheese Pull aparts, Custard Kreme, and Cube Bread. Café Mary GraceMaking happy memories with family and friends is what Café Mary Grace is all about. Over the years, it has gained countless fans for its delicious ensaymada and hot chocolate. But there is much more to Mary Grace than its ensaymada. There is the Tiramisu, which is soft-to-the-bite coffee brandy-drenched sponge cake with a rich, creamy filling. Citrus fans would fall for the Limone Santi, a frozen treat with a lemon filling, graham cake crust, and cream topping. If you’re in the mood for some indulgence, have a slice of their Strawberry Shortcake. It ’s the most tender of sponge cakes topped with whipped cream and garnished with strawberries. It ’s the perfect way to end a wonderful day!Café Mary Grace, Level 1

The Coffee Bean & Tea LeafThe perfect companion to The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf ’s rejuvenating blend of tea creations are the cakes and pastries displayed on their shelves. Try some of their rich and tangy Lemon Squares or their sweetishly tasty Salted Caramel Brownie. The Triple Decker Cheesecake is an indulgent treat, best served with a cup of your favorite brew. Cupcakes by Sonja’s new store at TriNoma has become a fave among students and young professionals who have developed a liking for their deliciously flavored cupcakes. While the Red Velvet Vixen remains a bestseller, these youngsters are always hankering for new flavors to try like Pistachio Berries ‘n’ Cream, a brown butter-based pistachio cupcake, and Peppermint Patty, Valrhona® dark chocolate cupcake. These cupcakes go well with a cup of hot chocolate with a velvety chocolate whipped cream or a glass of fresh lemonade, squeezed daily. Cupcakes by Sonja, Level 2

Each bowl of Ramen Santouka is deliciously comforting. Delicately flavored and lightly seasoned, Santouka offers a selection of ramen choices to suit your taste and mood: Shio is a mild and creamy broth seasoned with salt; Shoyu is also mild and creamy, but this time seasoned with soy sauce; Miso is flavored with soy bean paste; and Kara-miso is satisfyingly spicy.

By staying true to its culinary roots in Japan, every bowl of Ramen Santouka is authentically elegant, giving the diner a unique gustatory experience. Apart from these hot bowls of pleasure, Ramen Santouka also offers cold noodles with shrimps, salad greens, and a rich sesame sauce as well as set menus where your favorite ramen is served with your choice of entrees.Hokkaido Ramen Santouka, Level 4Garden Restaurants

Turning JapaneseWhether you’re into katsu or ramen, TriNoma’s new

restaurants have got you covered!

Katsu restaurants are a dime a dozen, but there is no other Katsu place which features the world’s best pork cutlets in one mouthwatering meal than at Katsu Sora.

Take the Iberico pork, for instance. A highly flavorful meat with a butter-like texture, it is breaded, deep-fried, and then served on a platter along with some salad greens, miso soup, and 15-grain rice. If you’re not too fond of Iberico, then you can ask for Kurobota, which is reputedly the wagyu of pork, or Shimofuru, which is called the black angus of pork. As an extra treat, Katsu Sora also features a salad buffet featuring a refreshing assortment of salad greens and veggies alongside 13 types of dressing. Yummy!Katsu Sora, Level 4 Garden Restaurants

Cara MiaFoodies with a sweet tooth will find the offerings at Cara Mia absolutely divine. Café BretonWho doesn’t love La Pinay? One of Café Breton’s bestselling offerings, it is mangoes enveloped in a tasty crepe and topped off with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. The cafe has many more equally delicious treats, including savory crepes with meatier fillings. Mochicream CaféMatcha fans are all agog over the opening of Mochicream Café in TriNoma. Known for its many health benefits, matcha is fine powder green tea with a lovely aftertaste, and at Mochicream Café, you may have them hot or cold. Have a cup of Matcha Cappuccino Espresso or a glass of Matcha Float. While there, try their beautiful mochicreams, imported from Japan. These are special creams, not ice cream, ensconced in a flavorful mochi skin. Get a taste of their Frozen Brazo de Mercedes or the Dacquoise, which is like a tiny Sansrival as well.Mochicream Café, Level 4 Garden Restaurants

Mrs. Fields CaféMrs. Fields made munching on cookies an exciting gustatory experience. Whether they’re filled with chocolate chips or peppered with nuts, they’re always deliciously soft to the bite. Its TriNoma cafe, which is located on the same level as the cinemas, mostly serves moviegoers who’d take out a couple of cookies for munching. Ria Ramos likes to bake because, well, she likes to eat. She says, “When I made my first cake from scratch,

there was a sort of enchantment that came with it.” When her daughter Solenni celebrated her first birthday, Ria made cupcakes for her party. “Two weeks later, I had an online cupcake shop called Solenni Dreams, and had since been able to share the joy I get from such creations with other people,” she says. In TriNoma, she likes going to Gourdo’s, National Bookstore, and The Landmark, looking for the tools to her baking and crafting projects. She says, “TriNoma for me is a very dynamic, very complete mall. The combination of shops and restaurants just appeals to all kinds of people. You can get what you need from the shops you have grown up with, but they also constantly open new, exciting ones to cater to their customer’s constantly evolving tastes.”

Finding Inspiration

It has become one of our bonding activities.” It’s no wonder then that Michelle loves checking out the many home stores in TriNoma. She says, “Every time I go to Landmark, I always find unique yet very affordable items like tea towels, throw pillow covers, rugs, ceramics, etc. that I can use for my DIY projects. I also often check out Dimensione, Regalong Pambahay/Simple Joys, and The Ramp at Crossings for quirky items I could add in our home. Lately, I discovered the newly opened store, Typo, that carries wooden monograms and other cute yet functional objects, perfect for DIYers like me!”

CAMILLEA preschool teacher, Camille Barretto works with kids ages two to three. Every day, she finds herself singing and playing with these energetic tykes as they learn their ABC’s and 123’s. The mood is fun and light, and often punctuated by the sound of laughter. Camille says, “I find it fulfilling to see them learn.”

She adds that working with children takes away the stress of everyday living as their happy disposition can be quite infectious. She particularly loves working on the Kiddie Olympics where parents get to join in the fun too!

Working in TriNoma is also a great mood enhancer as, she says, “everything is within your reach.” When she needs materials for her classes, she only needs to hop down to the bookstore. Snacks are quick and easy with all the dining options around the mall.

FRANCESFrances Catabas’ bubbly spirit shines through with every single word she says. Working with children is a blissful experience for her as she gets a lot of joy talking with them, making a difference in their active minds. Listening to children, Frances also finds herself learning a thing or two as they always offer a fresh perspective on things.

Frances chose to work in Gymboree because, “It’s something different. I find it interesting. Every day, when I go here to work, I look forward to a positive environment. The children and I, we learn from each other. I love my job!”

She adds, “TriNoma clients are happy and approachable.” Some of their clients would seek Frances’ advice, which she’d gladly dispense as a way of building good working relationships with them.

Where Learning is Fun!The teachers of Gymboree tell us why they love their jobs!

JOCELYN Unlike other nine-to-fivers who dread the thought of Monday, Jocelyn Paloma looks forward to going to work every single day. One of the teachers at Gymboree, Jocelyn says, “It’s fun to work because you get to work with children. It’s not your typical school. There’s more play.”

Jocelyn actually took up Culinary Arts. Because her nephew was a student at Gymboree, she was familiar with the school’s various offerings. When she found out that there was an opening for a teaching position at the TriNoma branch, she eagerly applied and got accepted.

After a couple of months of intensive training, she was on the floor, teaching kids the basics. In the future, she hopes to combine her love for kids and the culinary arts by putting up a cooking school for children. In the meantime, she looks forward to special school events. She is blessed to be working at TriNoma as it is very accessible to her home.
