REAPPOINTMENT OF THE PROVINCIAL SUPERIOR OF

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

I t was with great joy that the Superior General of the Society of Mary,

Fr. Manuel Cortés, SM, announced that, with the consent of the Gen-

eral Council, he had appointed Fr. Martin Solma to serve a second term

as Provincial Superior of the Province of the United States of America,

and Fr. Solma had generously accepted.

This second term will begin on June 30, 2015, and last for three years.

The General Council is particularly grateful to Fr. Martin for his accep-

tance, knowing that it comes with a large dose of sacrifice and hard

work. Nevertheless, given the confidence and support of the members

of the Province, the General Council assured him of their own confi-

dence in him and of their prayers for this ministry of leadership.

RELIGIOUS PROFESSES PERPETUAL VOWS

IN EASTERN AFRICA

B ro. Innocent Chik-

wanda, SM, from the

Region of Eastern Africa,

made his perpetual vows on

the 8th of December, 2014,

at St. Joseph's Chapel, Ma-

tero, in Lusaka, Zambia.

Archbishop Telesphore

Mpundu of Lusaka presided

over the Eucharist and Fr.

Gabriel Kirangah, SM, re-

ceived the vows.

In the colourful ceremony

about four hundred guests

were in attendance, includ-

ing Marianist Brothers from

Malawi, Zambia and Kenya,

the parishioners of St. Jo-

seph's chapel, the Faustino group, the Vocation group, the Zambian MLC amongst others.

Archbishop Telesphore gave a very nice homily emphasizing the role of religious in the

Church, especially during the recently begun Year of Consecrated life.

On the Saturday, the 13th of De-

cember, 2014, the Brothers joined

Bro. Innocent and his family at his

home parish for a thanksgiving

mass, celebrated at St. Peter's parish

Ndola. The mass was also colourful

and the parish priest gave a great

homily, once again stressing on the

vowed life during the year dedi-

cated to Consecrated life.

SHARING OUR EXPERIENCE OF THE VOWS

Meetings of the Religious of the Province of Spain

T he Provincial Council of

Spain considered the begin-

ning of the Year of the Conse-

crated Life to be a good moment

for us as religious to share among

ourselves how we live our vows

of poverty, chastity and obedi-

ence. To that end the Council or-

ganized five meetings, all five

with the same agenda, but in vari-

ous places and times in order to

encourage the participation of the greatest possible number of brothers. They invited all the members of

the Province to participate in one of the meetings. Four have already taken place; the fifth is scheduled

for February. Each meeting was guided by a member of the Provincial Council, using a highly devel-

oped common outline in which communication and personal witness were the dominant factors.

The structure could not have been simpler. The participants began on a Friday evening and ended on

Sunday after lunch. Altogether there were three work sessions: Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon

and Sunday morning. The first was dedicated to the vow of chastity, the second to that of poverty and

the third to that of obedience. We left the vow of stability for next year. There was also time for just

being together and for prayer with a quiet and well planned liturgy.

The three sessions had the same structure:

To begin, there was a witnessing of some 40

minutes by one of the participating religious,

prepared beforehand according to a common

guideline: “your way of understanding the vow,

when you started out in religious life and today;

what is most important for you about this vow?

From your experience, give five reasons for in-

viting others to live the vow. Some lights and

shadows of how you have lived it. What aspect

of the vow costs you the most? What has helped

you to overcome the difficulties?” This is not a

matter of theological reflections but of commu-

nication of personal experiences with their suc-

cesses and limitations, their highlights and

darker moments. In the various groups the wit-

nesses who communicated their experiences were thanked for the sincerity and the depth that was obvi-

ous in their presentation.

After this period of attentive listening, there followed an hour for personal reading and prayer. We re-

lied in each case upon the help of a written text. For chastity we used “Love Chastity,” taken from the

book by M. Casey, Strangers to the City: Reflections on the Beliefs and Values of the Rule of Saint

Benedict. For poverty: “Living from and for obedience to the Word of God,” a part of our Superior

General’s Circular No. 3, “Let it be done to me according to your Word.” And for obedience: sections

from the book of G. Uribarri, Portar las marcas de Jesús: Teología y espiritualidad de la vida con-

segrada [Bearing the Marks of Jesus: Theology and Spirituality of the Consecrated Life].

The last part of the session, after a rest and

before the celebration of the Eucharist or

Vespers, was the moment for communicating

personal experiences. It was a time for each

religious, after all the listening and reading,

to share his own personal witness also. It is

always easier to share ideas in common than

experiences, so in order to skirt that diffi-

culty a few simple group dynamics facili-

tated communication for us.

Before speaking about chastity, we played a

few hands of cards and asked ourselves

which of the four suits in the desk was most

characteristic of our lives. We found that

hearts were worth more than luck, fear or

personal brilliance. In the second stage, each

one wrote on colored Post-it’s the highlights and shadows of his experience and then shared what he

had written.

The exchange about our vow of poverty began with a moment of silence. Each one had a blank receipt.

Beginning from Jesus’s promise that we will receive the hundredfold in this life, we were invited to

write on it what each one has received from God in his experience of the vow of poverty. We finished

by sharing all that was written.

The sharing about obedience began with all of us try-

ing to put together the picture of a cat with the pieces

of a puzzle. To do so effectively, we all had to listen

to everyone else, without anyone imposing his will

on the rest. But, in spite of that, we were unable to

complete the picture.

To help us we then used a sketch with a more clearly

outlined solution: having a clear idea we were able

to finish the picture easily. Once the cat was fin-

ished, we could see that, for the picture to be com-

plete, all the pieces were needed. Then, after writing

down on a card a few sentences of a possible deca-

logue on how to live the vow of obedience, we ex-

changed our ideas. But we were communicating experiences, rather than discussing ideas as such.

The final Eucharist summed up the work done, the ideals shared, the fellowship experienced and the

encouragement conveyed. The participants in the four meetings already held evaluated quite positively

the ambiance they experienced and the interchange accomplished, thanks to the good will of the partici-

pants and the detailed care with which the meetings had been prepared by the Provincial Council.
