My name is Steve Thorlakson, and I am the General Manager of Surerus Pipeline Inc. of Fort St.John, BC. For 15 years until December, 2005, I was Mayor of Fort St. John, so know and appreciate the value of keeping local government informed of developments in their community and area – and also appreciate the help and assistance local government can be to business. Surerus Pipeline Inc. has been in the pipeline construction business since 1969, and has built over 6,000 km of pipeline in northeastern BC and central and northern Alberta. We are pleased to advise that we have been awarded a tender to construct approximately 92 km of 20” pipeline for Spectra – the South Peace Pipeline project from South of the Upper Cutbank area through to the Spectra Plant Site in Taylor. We anticipate a peak crew of 450 including sub-contractors will be at the various worksites from early July through until early October, 2009. Our crew will be seeking accommodation in the area, and we will be using service providers and suppliers from the communities as well. We will be extensively utilizing the resources associated with Saulteau and West Moberly First Nations. We have operations bases in Dawson Creek, Taylor and at our Head Office in Fort St. John. It is our policy to be good corporate citizens, not only in our “home town” but also where we work. We believe that we should leave our jobs with the community, service providers and suppliers looking forward to our return for future projects. Our primary contact on-site will be our “Spread Boss”, Mr. JJ Decorby, who can be reached at (403) 875-1035 or via e-mail at [email protected] . In my 40 years in the pipe-line business, I have neverheard of a pipeline com-pany accomplishing whatSurerus has just achieved. As of February 28, 2009,we surpassed One MillionMan Hours worked withouta Lost Time Incident! A“Lost Time Incident” occurswhen a job-related illnessor injury causes an em-ployee to miss work be-yond the day of injury.

To put One Million Manhours into perspective, it isthe equivalent of 480 peo-ple working 40 hour weeksfor an entire year. In ourcase, it has taken just overtwo years achieve this mile-stone.

I have to give a tip of theSurerus hat and thank youand congratulations to allmy employees and sub-contractors, both in HeadOffice and in the field.

The companies we work foralso deserve a great deal ofcredit. Their safety require-ments, together with ourprogressive Health &, Safetyprograms all play a signifi-cant part in encouragingSurerus to work safely.

Safety is no accident—andtoday I am more proudthan ever that we live ourmotto—every day.

Safe Work. Quality Work.

We can’t have anydirect influence on these proc-esses, but we can continue tomonitor to make sure we are wellpositioned. Our sterling safety re-cord will stand Surerus in goodstead.
