    Cloning and System Reconfiguration of Physical Machines

    Whenyouimportaphysicalsystem,ConverterEnterpriseusescloningandsystemreconfigurationtocreate

    avirtualmachinethatiscompatiblewithVirtualCenter.

    Cloningistheprocessofcreatingacloneddisk,wherethecloneddiskisavirtualdiskthatisanexactcopyof

    thesourcephysicaldisk.Thisinvolvescopyingthedataonthesourcemachinesharddiskandtransferring

    thatdatatoatargetvirtualdisk(thenewcloneddisk).

    Systemreconfigurationistheprocessofadjustingthemigratedoperatingsystemtoenableittofunctiononvirtualhardware.Thisadjustmentisperformedonthetargetvirtualdiskaftercloningandenablesthetarget

    virtualdisktofunctionasabootablesystemdiskinavirtualmachine.

    Themigrationprocessisnondestructive,soyoucancontinuetousetheoriginalsourcemachineafterthe

    importcompletes.Ifyouplantorunanimportedvirtualmachineonthesamenetworkasthesourcephysical

    machine,modifythenetworknameandIPaddressononeofthemachines,sothatthephysicalandvirtual

    machinescancoexist.

    Hot and Cold Cloning

    ConverterEnterprisesupportshotcloningandcoldcloning.Hotcloning,alsocalledlivecloningoronline

    cloning,entailscloningthesourcemachinewhileitisrunningitsoperatingsystem.Coldcloning,alsocalled

    offlinecloning,

    entails

    cloning

    the

    source

    machine

    when

    it

    is

    not

    running

    its

    operating

    system.

    In

    cold

    cloning,

    yourebootthesourcemachinefromaCDthathasitsownoperatingsystemandincludethestandalone

    VMwareConverterEnterpriseapplication.Coldcloningleavesnofootprintonthesourcemachine.

    Remote and Local Cloning

    Forremotecloning,youcanaccessthesourcemachinewithouthavingtophysicallytouchit,aslongasitis

    runningandaccessibletothenetwork.Withlocalcloning,youcanusestandaloneVMwareConverter

    Enterpriserunningonthesourcemachinetoperformthemigration.

    Remote Hot Cloning of a Physical Machine

    Thefollowingworkflowisanexampleofhotcloning,inwhichthephysicalmachinebeingclonedexperiences

    nodowntime.YouusetheConverterEnterprisewizardtosetupamigrationtaskandConverterEnterprise

    automaticallyperformsallofthecloningtasks.

    NOTE Whenhotcloningdualbootsystems,youcanonlyclonethedefaultoperatingsystemthatboot.ini

    points.Ifyouwanttoclonethenondefaultoperatingsystem,changeboot.initopointtotheotheroperating
