Ripon Cathedral has a history stretchingback almost fourteen centuries.Throughout this time it has offered anunbroken tradition of witness to theChristian faith, both in the city of Riponand across North Yorkshire.

Dominating the Ripon skyline, thisamazing building has inspired thelikes of Lewis Carroll and WilfredOwen and continues to inspire anduplift visitors and worshippers alike.

The present church was founded bySaint Wilfrid and dedicated in 672,although it has been rebuilt severaltimes since. The ancient Saxon crypt –one of the oldest in the country – isthe only part of Wilfrid’s originalchurch that remains to this day.

From the first glimpse of the Hall frombetween farm buildings, to themoment the Mediaeval Courtyardopens up as visitors pass beneath theTudor Gatehouse, Markenfield neverfails to astound. The earliest part of thehouse was built circa 1230, and laterenlarged by Canon John deMarkenfield, resulting in the distinctiveoutline that you see to this day.

The Markenfield family owned theHall until their fateful involvement inthe Rising of the North in 1569. TheHall and its surrounding farmlandwere confiscated for High Treasonand from that day until 1761 becamea tenanted farm.

The house was essentially saved in1761 by the first Lord Grantley ofMarkenfield (a title still held by thefamily) and in the 1980s the restorationof Markenfield began in earnest –turning it from a cold and draughtyfarmhouse in to the much-loved familyhome that visitors see today.

We suggest that you allow an hourto an hour and a half for a visit tothe Hall.
