!he race to generate nuclear energy is dri(en largely by the countrys growing energy demand

which according to go(ernment proections is epected to increase by 14 per cent per year until

2015. ne o the ey challenges which ietnam aces is that currently at least a third o its energy is

generated by hydropower plants but there are two ey issues which threaten the (iability o

hydropower as a long term solution to ietnams energy needs. 6irstly hydropower proects depend

on a(ourable weather conditions and in recent periods o drought the eisting hydropower proects

ha(e struggled to generate suicient output to meet pea demand and this situation will onlyworsen as the demand increases. econdly other than the maor new plant at on 7a (ery ew sites

ha(e been identiied as being suitable or additional large scale hydropower proects. !hereore

ietnam has had to loo to an alternati(e renewable source to meet its growing demand. ietnam

has announced its intention to construct at least 13 nuclear power turbine units in ietnam in the

net 20 years with the aim that by 2030 these nuclear power units will pro(ide 15000-1400089

o power representing 10 per cent o the total installed capacity in ietnam. rom
