Lynda Benjamin Administrative Assistant

Hello everyone, After a long holiday, I got back to

work on Mon the 24th. Jordan and I went to visit Lawrence, Megan and Shae Han in Victoria BC. We had a good visit, Shae was by our side all the time. They stay close to town, so Jordie and I walked downtown and to a big mall, 10 minutes walk from their place. We went to a wax museum, crystal gardens and a museum where we saw dinosaur bones all the way from china. We also went on

a boat, where we can see under the ocean. There we saw eel, lobsters, star fish, octopus and lots of other fishes. The weather was okay, until the last two days it rained a lot. Jordan enjoyed the ferry ride to Victoria. We left for Van-couver on the ferry on the 22nd, stayed for one night right downtown. We walked around downtown for a couple hours. Then I took Jordan to Gas Town for supper at Brother's, a place where they dress like Monks. We enjoyed our trip down south, especially seeing Shae Han.

Edna Kyikavichik Accounts Receivable Clerk Hello to everyone in Old Crow and to others who may read the Newsletter I hope you’re all doing fine and taking care. As for myself, things are going great with work and everything else. Work has been busy at times, but since Maureen left it was very quiet. We will have a new director in the of-fice soon, so things will be very busy and we’ll probably be learning new working skills and doing a lot of new work in the office. I would like to wel-come Catherine, our new Director of Finance to Old Crow; I hope you like your stay and surely the weather will be warming up soon. I hope you’re all enjoying the weather and hoping it will warm up soon. Easter is coming up and all the Easter eggs will be here.

Well, I hope you’re all having a won-derful day and every other day. Take care and wish for warm weather to come. Well, I will be closing here for now, until next time.

Hello Everyone This is the end of the fiscal year so the

finance dept is very busy. The T-4’s were sent out end of Feb/03. For the contractors, you should receive the T1204. Edna and I were by ourselves for the month of March. The new director for Finance will be here by the end of the month (March) Her name is Cath-erine Mbae. I would like to welcome Catherine to our community. This all from the Finance Department until next time . Happy Spring to all.

Carl Charlie Land Resources Manager

Hello again everyone how are you all doing? I hope you are having a good winter so far.

My work days have been up and down, some slow days and some very busy days. I have been doing a lot of travelling to Whitehorse, attending board meetings as well as workshops for my position here.

I went up to Bell River with Robert

how to put stuff away neatly!! SMILE!!!! The next project was pizza. That was

really enjoyed. But yesterday, a young lady that is go-

ing away to visit in B.C. for a while learned how to make potato candy. We wrote the recipe down, so she could take it with her and share it with her new friends there.

Patti Tetlichi is now giving me books to take to houses to read with your chil-dren, and we are seeing a positive side to the children's love of reading. This makes me very happy.

This has been a good month. Thank you for your prayers.

Kaye and Lawrence Lord to break trail for the Johnny D. Charlie annual Ski-Doo trip. It was nice to be out on the land. The weather was good and there were some caribou around the Bell River area. It was good to see all of the Ski-Doos coming around a river bend just below Eagle River. I want to thank Freddy Frost for the use of his cabin.

Spring is almost here and I hope you all have a great one. Think “Safety First” when travelling out on the land every-one.

Karen Rinker Homework Tutor

I have had some really fun times this month.

I have been able to give a student a candy bar, because he was hurrying to get his homework done before I got there. That is the purpose of the pro-gram, to see that the homework gets done. To see a student challenged enough to tackle it himself is so encour-aging.

Also I have been able to teach some culinary skills, or in simpler words, "cooking." We had a little boy teach me how to make bannock, and I taught him

In November of last year, the North Yukon Renewable Resources Council and the Porcupine River Habitat Stew-ard held an essay and drawing contest for school children in Old Crow. The results were amazing, and it was difficult to judge, but after long deliberation, we arrived at a decision. We want to thank all the students who entered this con-

Tracy Kassi Enrollment Officer

Hope all is well with everyone out there. Office life has been keeping us busy with the production of the VGFN Oral History video, Imprints Of Our Ancestors, which has been partially completed; we may have to do another recording. Once that is done we will offer a special viewing at the community center. The video is based on interviews the Heritage Department has conducted over the last three years with Elders. Our Elders talk to us about preserving our Heritage and culture for our children and future generations, by means of telling us about scared places within our Traditional Territory. Such places included a place called Game Mountain, also known as Potato Hill. This was a specific place used by our people many years ago as a gathering place among the Gwich’in Nation. You will hear Elder, Mary Kassi in our video describe some of the activities that use to happen there.

Our funding to do this video came from the Canada Council of the Arts for a 40-minute documentary. Well after writing the script and getting all the footage together for the video, we only completed a 17 minute documentary!!

This means, we are now working on Part 2 of the documentary. This will start with more interviews with our peo-ple once again. I would like to person-ally thank all of you out there for coop-

erating with Mary Jane and I while we do our filming, it really means a lot to us and it will be appreciated one day by our children and the children yet to be born. I am proud to be a part of this. So if you hap-

pen to drop by my office and I’m not there, I’ll probably be in the Edit Suite, capturing footage on the MAC com-puter.

With other projects on my desk, I’ve just completed most of the Elders tax returns for 2002. This year I filed some of the returns through the internet, which will hopefully be faster, as it is received that same day. It is really im-portant that some documents be kept in a safe place for your tax returns, below is a list of these documents that can help you when you file your Tax Returns. Start Today!

Keep These Documents In A Safe Place For Your Taxes Next Year!

•Gas Receipts •Airline Tickets • Hotel Receipts • Skidoo Parts & Oil Purchases

•Medical Expences •Electrical Bills (If You’re Working

From Your Home) •Daycare Receipts (If You Paid For

Childcare Yourself) Passports have been sent out but a

couple have been returned because of the photo that was taken by the photog-rapher. I will be calling him again to make arrangements with him to correct this, somehow.

The Lawyer who has taken the task to do the Wills with our Elders has been really busy with court cases in White-horse. She will hopefully be arriving in April. I will keep you posted.

VGFN Citizenship cards will soon be processed from my office as soon as I get a design of how our cards will look. I’ve just received a new laminator and cards for this task. Once we have this set up, we will again do a posting. So keep your eyes open and the different posting areas within Old Crow.

I hope everyone will enjoy their Spring and I would like to say “Welcome Home” to our High School students! Until next time, Massi Cho.

P.S. Special Birthday greetings to my daughters, April, for April 8th and Kecia, for April 13th. We hope your special day brings you all the love and happiness in the world! All our love from Mom, Dad and your little brother, Tyrel.

Cheryl Itsi-Charlie Director, Human Resources

Day-to-day work keeps me busy in the Human Resources Department. With limited funds in the AHRDA, I am able to focus on the Human Resource duties more and that works for me. Right now we don’t have an ETO. Once we do hire an ETO, then that individual will be able to work strictly with the AHRDA. We hope to post that position in the new fiscal year.

I focus on job postings, arranging hir-ing committee to screen, interview and hire applicants for positions advertised with the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation. It may seem straight forward, but some-times I am posting 3-5 positions for various projects and departments and it can get crazy. I manage to get the job done at the end of the day. I like being challenged with results at the end.

This month new applicants are going

through the hiring process for the fol-lowing positions:

•Housing Manager •Shop Supervisor •Receptionist •Fuel Delivery & Maintenace

Worker-April 1, 2003-March 31, 2004 •Gas Attendant- April 1, 2003-

March 31, 2004 •Garbage Haul- April 1, 2003-March

31, 2004 I usually post job postings at the fol-

lowing areas: •Northern Stores •VGFN Office-Front Area •VGFN-Human Resource Dept.

Please keep posted and if you are in-terested in applying for a position, please provide the Human Resources Depart-ment with a cover letter and resume. Training & Employment: Well another year of training and em-ployment is near and it’s been a busy

year again. It’s great to see clients com-ing in and requesting assistance to fol-low their goals and accomplishing them is even greater. Congratulations to all the clients that stepped out of their comfort zone to take a risk and move toward what they want in employment & train-ing. Give yourself a pat on the back for the hard work you’ve done to get to where you are today. Massi Cho for be-ing role models to your community. The following chart indicates how many participants and projects we funded throughout the 2002-03 year. Note that shaded areas indicate training interven-tion incomplete. As you can see from the table, that cli-ents are training in a vast array of fields, which shows that they are following their goals and not sticking the “same” fields. That’s all for now, have an enjoyable spring and Happy Easter to everyone.

Roger Kyikavichik Director, Social Programs

Happy spring to you all. Hope you are all enjoying the spring weather. This is the best time of the season to get out and do the things you most enjoy.

I attended the Yukon First Nation Health Summit, 2003, held in White-horse, March 18th – 20th. This was an opportunity for First Nations to work together to help improve the health status of First Nation people. The focus was health care in relation to Self Government. The first day, with communities expressing their frustration of their past experiences with health care, the tone was set for the next two days. With this in mind, the delegates of the health summit developed recommendations for a plan of action.

The plan of action: 1) Senior Officials get discus-

sions underway ASAP with Health Canada to address:

(a) NIHB benefit cutbacks, Self Government First Nation ac-cess to Income Reform related funding.

(b) Long term partnership ar-rangement with comprehensive scope and Final Agreement / Self Government Agreement.

2) Request the Leadership (Chiefs) to assemble a Leadership committee on Health and Social Services to provide political guid-ance and representation.

3) Health Commission to con-tinue to work on development of Self Government First Nation wellness model, programs and ser-vices.

These are just some of the is-sues the Yukon First Nation are working together on. For more information on what issues we are dealing with you can contact VGFN Social Director.

Old Crow Ski Club The ski program has been well

under way since Oc-tober, 2002, and so far the program is going well. There are issues that need to be addressed as we go forward. With com-munity input we can address the issues. If you wish to help or need more informa-tion, please contact:

Glenna Tetlichi, Tracy Kassi, Patty Tetlichi, Joe Tetlichi or me.

The women’s retreat in early March went extremely well. It was great to share, learn from one an-other and have fun together. Our guest was Charlotte from Status of Women’s Council who was here to do a presentation and take part in the retreat. Thanks to Cheryl, Brenda, Amanda, the So-cial and Justice department for your support in making this a suc-cess and also thanks to the ladies that came out and participated.

The Old Crow Interagency committee meets twice a month to discuss community issues and look at solutions to address these issues. If you are interested in participating let me know and I will inform you of our meetings. The next meeting is scheduled for Friday March 28 at 1:30pm. A

community questionnaire is out to get your feedback on the possibil-ity of a culture camp; we need to know what the community mem-bers think about this idea before we can proceed any further. Your input is very important. Please take the time to fill out the ques-tionnaire and return it to the VGFN office. A community meeting will be scheduled soon to discuss this further.

Congratulations to all those that took part in the ski camp during spring break, your commitment and hard work will pay off. Also thanks to Phillipe and Amanda Mouchet for working with our children and showing them a more positive and healthier life-style.

To the ski committee members, parents and all involved in this program, keep up the great work!!

History of the Ski Program With the assistance of Glenna

Tetlichi, Father Mouchet was in-vited to Old Crow 4 years ago to see whether or not the ski pro-gram could work, verbally sharing her vision at the Annual General Assembly held in 1999. The Old Crow Ski Program originally got off the ground with funding sup-port from YTG Community De-velopment Fund.

Glenna made numerous calls and kept in contact with Govern-ment Officials, Father Mouchet, and ski supporters. With the ini-tiation of this program Tracy Kassi and Joe Tetlichi came on

board to assist Glenna with the development. Today, many other ski supporters joined in, including parents, VGFN and YTG Offi-cials (Archie Lang, Don Roberts, Sandy Bryce, Barry Stewart,

Dave Brooks, Shirlee Frost, and Rudy Sudrich.). With this support we are hoping to build healthy children and a healthy society.

Thank you to the ski supporters for investing in your children’s future!

Amanda & Phillipe Mouchet were invited to Old Crow to work with the children interested in the program. This included: teaching healthy eating habits, ski tech-

Spring is here; does it feels like it? Hope you all enjoy the sun-shine and the long daylight.

It’s newsletter time already. March is always the busiest time of the year for staff.

Diabetes / HIV / AIDS Work-shop, March 20-22

Peggy at Recreation, Debra at Home & Community Care, and I planned a workshop.

Joanne Leung : Facilitated the Diabetes workshop. I thought the turn out was good.

Red Power Squad, a group of seven youth from Edmonton, who are performers as well as fa-cilitators, did an excellent job. The weekend of fun with the Red Power Squad had a strong impact on the youth as well as the chil-

dren. A lot of youth said “Gee, why do they have to go?” This means that we need to get them back up here soon. This is all on the workshop. I’m sure others will report too.

A heart full of thanks to Jane & Jim Montgomery and Wayne Ollett for a job well done. Also to Peggy and Debra: Now we know that we can work as a team, right? Give yourselves a pat on the back!

Thank You to the following people for your contribution to the supper for Dr Beaton:

Elizabeth Kaye, Kathie Nukon, Helen Charlie, Mary Tizya. and Roger Kaye. On behalf of Dr Bruce Beaton, who asked me to express a big thank you to each of you, it was you that made it possi-ble.

Thank you all and have a gor-geous spring.

Kai Rannik IS Technician & Trainer It’s been a busy month for me, between Training, budgeting Paul’s travels and the newsletter. I’ve been glad to receive positive feedback regarding the Computer Basic Training Course. Not only have the students enjoyed them-selves and done well, I’ve also been seeing graduates implement their new skills in their workplace. It’s good to see the people at VGFN getting the most out of their computers. Great work! Paul will be booking more stu-dents for the continuing courses. Be sure to let your Director know if you’re especially interested in learning more about your com-puter. Enjoy the sun, and I’ll see you all in class!

Peggy Billingsley Director, Recreation

Programming: There were plenty of activities offered for all ages in March and it was great to see so many people come out and join in the fun. We kicked off the month with some bread baking at the Ladies Night Out program. There were many laughs, a few cups of tea and some delicious, homemade bread at the end of it all. The loaves weren’t perfect in shape but they were definitely perfect in taste!

During the first week of March we also had some visi-tors from the BC Centre of Excel-lence who put on some awesome hockey clinics. The coaches, all from the Vancouver area, hadn’t seen such cold temperatures be-fore and despite cold toes they persevered and had a great time meeting the children and parents. There were 37 children in total who came out for the clinics and all participants were rewarded with a cool jersey, water bottle and hockey cards. Special thanks to Philippe for taking the coaches for a snowshoe hike up the moun-tain - they had a fantastic time.

During the March break, Rec-reation was kept busy organizing a number of activities including an Adults vs. Kids hockey game. There were 17 children and 8 adults who took up the challenge and all had a great time. It was great to see so many participants and cheer-leaders. The kids won by a landslide and special mention goes to Lance Nukon who rounded out the talent on the kids’ team and gave them a hand.

Old Crow was also host to the Red Power Squad this month. This group of drug and alcohol free Aboriginal youth held work-shops on positive choices, break-dancing and rapping. They also put on two special performances

in the evenings and had the gym rocking. Congratulations to Theraz for winning the talent competition with his awesome moves! Many thanks to Marion, Debra and Wayne for all their hard work and to Jane and Jim for keeping us all so well fed.

Last month’s Smile Contest winner was Ronald Frost who

guessed that the awe-some smile belonged to Birch Howard! When, like this time, there are several correct guesses, we put all the names in a hat and draw a win-ner. Both Ronald and

Birch won a certificate for a free movie rental. Check out this month’s contest and don’t forget to put your name on your entry!

Looking ahead to April, there will be many activities so come out and join in. Highlights include an Arctic Sports clinic from the 14th to the 16th and the Easter Carnival from the 18th to the 21st. We need volunteers to help run events or work behind the scenes. Give us a call and help to make this Easter Carnival the best ever.

Our new calendar is included with this newsletter and a copy is also posted inside the Northern Store. Gym nights are scheduled according to ages. We have divided

the children according to ages to help ensure that everyone has an enjoyable time in the gym and we are being firm about those divi-sions. In order that children and youth aren’t turned away at the door, please help your children remember what night their gym time falls on. Participants are also reminded that abusive behaviour, whether verbal or physical, will not be tolerated and loss of gym time will follow.

Youth Centre: Renovations to the Youth Centre are now well underway and it won’t be long until we will be holding our grand re-opening! We’re looking for-ward to being able to offer a vari-ety of programs from here and would encourage you to give us ideas for activities.

Final Thoughts: Volunteers are very important to the success of any recreation department and we need people who can give as little as one hour per month. Vol-unteering is a great way to build new skills and to improve the quality of a resume. Plus it makes you feel great! We will provide training and ongoing support.

As always if you have any ques-tions or comments please don’t hesitate to give us a call at the

Youth Centre. Constructive feedback is always wel-come.

THE SMILE?

Do you recognize this month’s smile? Drop your guess in the “Smile Box” at VGFN Reception. Remember to in-clude your name

So many people recognized last month’s saucy

was drawn, so both Ronald and Birch received FREE Movie Rentals.

Hello, I would like to acknowledge Marion Schafer,

Debra Frost, Peggy Billingsley and Wayne Ollett

who were all involved in bringing up the "RED

POWER SQUAD" team to our community. All I could say is they did a lot for my son Kyle's

self esteem and inspired him. He has not stopped

talking about all that they did and most of all

what they taught him! He always did like hip-hop

music and dancing but didn't have the resources

to do so. With this group who came up they gave

him a chance to express himself and it did a lot

for him. For the first time I see the young youth’s faces

brighter and I think it is because of the inspira-

tion and admiration of the Red Power Squad.

Bringing up these kinds of groups for the youth

will, in the end, teach our children that there is

more out there that they can do and see when

they strive for the best. Once again, thank you Marion, Debra, Peggy and

Wayne. Kimberly Blake
