HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2012 YEAR‐END DIASPORA ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM Voices for Sudan (VFS) hosted key Diaspora leaders and individuals from across Sudan for a year‐end gathering December 17‐18, 2012 in Washington, D.C. Activities included training workshops on advocacy techniques and communications, brainstorming and reflection on issues of importance to the Diaspora, dialogue with the advocacy community and public policymakers, and an appreciation dinner. Participants in the VFS trainings and/or advocacy meetings were: Abdallah Babikir, Blue Nile Association; Amir Libiss, Sudanese American Public Affairs Association (SAPAA); Elmontasir Mohamed, Sudanese American Public Affairs Association (SAPAA), Hawa Abdallah Mohammed Salih, Darfur activist and recipient of the Secretary of State’s 2012 International Women of Courage; Khalid Gerais , Nubia Project; Miass Abdelaziz, Sudan Human Rights Network; Rebecca Deng , Diaspora activist; plus Jimmy Mulla, president and co‐founder of VFS and Babikir Babiki, VFS program assistant. This year‐end event was a follow‐up to a dialogue initiated by VFS in February 2012, when the Diaspora was engaged in a similar discussion of important issues. The dialogue initiative with policymakers and the advocacy community has now become a part of the VFS education program, which is centered on connecting the Diaspora community with policymakers and Sudanese delegations. Through VFS, the Diaspora has invited and hosted a number of visiting delegations in Washington, DC. December 17 ‐ Training Workshops for Sudan Advocates Patton Boggs, an international law firm that has evolved into being the nation’s leading public policy law firm, generously hosted the VFS workshops for Sudan advocates at their Washington, D.C. headquarters. In preparation for the next day’s meetings with government officials and lawmakers, Patton Boggs partner Russell V. Randle presented the training on advocacy, covering such topics as having both facts and a rationale for why a policymaker should care about the issue, the nature of “life on the Hill”, where meetings can take place – from a sit‐down with a staff member to a one‐minute walk in the hall with a lawmaker, and the importance of correct etiquette and follow‐up. VFS also appreciates the substantive contributions to this training made by VFS board member Richard Parkins, Director of American Friends of the Episcopal Church of Sudan (AFRECS), who coordinated the program with Patton Boggs and made many substantive contributions to the workshop. Paulette Lee, APR, also a VFS board member and an international communications specialist, gave a training on “Integrating ‘New Media’ into Effective Communications”. This non‐technical presentation and lively discussion focused on how "new media" in general, and "social media" specifically, can be incorporated into strategic communications planning to strengthen public relations and advocacy efforts. continued next page
