The System Requirements and Platform Support Guide contains information on the

hardware requirements and supported platforms for vFoglight 6.5. Please review the

information in this guide before installing vFoglight.

This guide is intended for vFoglight system administrators. The first chapter lists the

system requirements for the vFoglight Management Server and database repository for32-bit and 64-bit platforms. The next chapter lists the platforms supported for the

vFoglight Mangement Server, database repository, and for monitored hosts (vFoglight

Agent Manager and OS cartridges), as well as validated Web browsers and PDF viewer.

The last chapter provides reference information on the vFoglight license model.

Hardware Requirements and

Guidelines

This chapter lists the hardware requirements (CPU, RAM and disk storage) for 32- and

64-bit installations of the vFoglight Management Server and the database repository.

About vFoglight Hardware Requirements

The hardware needed to run vFoglight can vary widely depending on a number of

factors, including:

The number and type of agents that are being used

The persistence and data-rollup policies

Agent configuration settings

You should not consider doing a production implementation without conducting a

proper scoping and sizing exercise with a qualified Quest Software representative. You

can arrange for a sizing analysis by contacting your Quest Software Sales

Representative. At a minimum, you are required to provide hardware matching the

specifications in this chapter.

vFoglight Server Components and Tiers

A vFoglight Server installation has two components:

The vFoglight Management Server

The vFoglight database repository

Setting up vFoglight to run both of its components on the same machine is known as a

single-tierinstallation. Using separate machines for each component is known as a

multi-tierinstallation. Whichever configuration you choose, each component requiresits own specifically-dedicated resources. To help facilitate sizing, the resources required

to support each component are listed separately.

Single-Tier vFoglight Hardware Requirements

To install vFoglight in a single-tier configuration, you must have hardware capable ofrunning both the vFoglight Management Server (JVM) and vFoglight database

repository together. The requirements are listed below.

Server and Database, 32-bit Platforms

Important Some 32-bit operating systems, such as Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, have a

4 GB memory limit. Adjust your memory allocation accordingly. Windows Server 2003

Enterprise Edition can support up to 32 GB of physical memory with the Physical

Multi-Tier vFoglight Hardware Requirements

To install vFoglight in a multi-tier configuration, you must have separate hardware for

each of the vFoglight Management Server (JVM) and vFoglight Database Repository.

The requirements are listed below.

Note 13 GB RAM is required if the PA WebView cartridge will be used (it

runs on the vFoglight server and uses an RMI process to communicate

with monitored hosts).

vFoglight Agent Manager Resource RequirementsvFoglight Agent Manager runs on monitored hosts. It uses minimal system resources;

the amount depends on a variety of factors including the number of agents running on

the monitored host, the amount of data being collected, and whether the vFoglight

Management Server is running.

The following table lists the system resources typically used by the vFoglight Agent

Manager while it is running:

Caution This section is intended to provide general information that is applicable to most

vFoglight installations. You should not consider doing a production implementation

without conducting a proper scoping and sizing exercise with a qualified Quest Software

representative.

CPU Usage Varies greatly by cartridge / agent, the amount of data being

collected, and the complexity of the technology being monitored

Average is 4.8% CPU utilization

RAM Ranges from 50 MB to 330 MB (amount can be configured whenusing vFoglight Agent Manager)

Average is 180 MB

Storage May use up to 1 GB of hard disk for installation, operation and

temporary data storage

Note vFoglight is a multi-threaded software application running in a Java Virtual Machine (JVM).

It runs on, and takes advantage of, MultiThreading and HyperThreading (also known as

Simultaneous MultiThreading) enabled environments.

Unless you are running the installer in console mode, verify that you have an X Windows

environment prior to installing vFoglight on UNIX platforms.

Operating System Patch Requirements for the JRE

The vFoglight Management Server and the vFoglight Agent Manager require a Java

Runtime Environment (JRE). In order for vFoglight to run properly, it requires that the

operating system is at a minimum patch level to support our JRE.

Ensure that your OS is properly patched for the JRE. It is recommended that you check

with your OS vendor for the latest patches for your platform.

The vFoglight Management Server must be patched to support Java 1.6.

Monitored hosts must be patched to support Java 1.5.

Supported External DatabasesThe vFoglight Management Server requires a database repository. You have the option

of using the embedded database included with vFoglight, or using an external database.

The external database must be a supported platform and version. Customers are

responsible for the procurement, installation, and management of an external database.

The following table lists the external databases supported for vFoglight. These versions

are supported for any platform supported for the vFoglight Management Server.

While you can run your external database on any operating system platform supported

by your database vendor, Quest Software will only support database issues that can be

reproduced on one of the following OS platforms (32- or 64-bit):

vFoglight License Model

The vFoglight product consists of a collection of capabilities whose usage is metered

against CPU sockets, managed ports, and servers. This section outlines the capabilities

associated with each part.

Any software licensed on a per-socket basis may only be used on the particular

socket(s) for which it was originally licensed, where a processor is counted equivalent

to a socket. Any usage beyond such scope shall obligate the Licensee to pay Quest

additional fees.

vFoglight is licensed for open systems only, in accordance with the supported platform

matrix. For more information, see Supported Platforms on page 13.

Licensable Parts of the SolutionThe following sections outline the various parts of the vFoglight licensing model.

vFoglight-Server

vFoglight-Server is the central data repository, correlation, and analysis engine for

vFoglight. All dashboards and reports are built and viewed from the central server. It is

licensed on a per-server basis, which means that a license must be purchased for each

physical server that will run the vFoglight Server software. The vFoglight Server is a

prerequisite for all the other licensable components of vFoglight.

For each vFoglight Server you purchase, you are entitled to unlimited usage with no

user restrictions.

vFoglight OS Management

vFoglight OS Management delivers a subset of the collectors, rules, alarms, and out-of-

the-box dashboards and reports that are provided in the vFoglight part. It is licensed on

a per-CPU socket basis.

For each socket that you have licensed under vFoglight OS Management, you are

entitled only to:
