VETERINARY MEDICINEVeterinary medicine deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and research of diseases affecting animals. There is a wide scope within veterinary medicine covering all animal species, including domesticated (cats, dogs, horses), livestock (cows, sheep, pigs) and wildlife (birds, monkeys, reptiles, bears). There are many exciting career paths in the fi eld of veterinary medicine to explore, which positively impact global health overall. A career in veterinary medicine provides the opportunity to contribute to both animal and human health, food quality and safety, food security, behavior, biomedical research, wildlife and environmental health. Studying animal life and disease ultimately helps to improve our understanding of human life and disease.

This is often one of the more common routes taken by new veterinary professionals. Many veterinarians become general practitioners, providing primary care to small or large animals including general medicine, dentistry, and surgery. Others become specialists who focus solely on small-animal surgery, cardiology, ophthalmology, or emergency animal medicine.

Thousands of cats, dogs, and other animals are homeless. Working in shelter medicine a practitioner can play a role—in collaboration with communities and private/public agencies—in helping these animals stay healthy and happy while housed in shelters. Wildlife animals, such as reptiles, birds, monkeys and bears, are a part of the larger environment. Veterinarians may be called on to care for these animals.

If you’re not interested in setting up your own veterinary practice, you can also care for companion animals without having to think about the day-to-day-operations of a private practice. Corporate practices can offer good benefi ts, fl exible schedules, and opportunities to stay up-to-date on some of the latest information and techniques in veterinary medicine and surgery.

Agencies like the European Food Safety Authority, Departments of Agriculture, the National Institutes of Health, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Food and Drug Administration all work to employ veterinarians in a variety of fi elds, such as regulatory medicine, agricultural animal health, disease outbreak investigation and environmental quality.

The transmission of infectious diseases from animals to humans is a growing concern in the fi eld of veterinary and human medicine. Practitioners can work in the public health sector with government agencies—to help control zoonoses and vector borne diseases (like those transmitted by mosquito). Veterinarians may also be involved in emergency response and preventative programs against agro-terrorism.

Veterinarians serve on the front line to ensure the safety of the public food supply, protecting the health of animals and people. Livestock play an essential role in food production and veterinarians are needed at varying stages of the food production process, from the farm level to the transport and distribution at local and international levels or for export and import inspection. Roles within this career path are important ensuring food safety through inspection of products and surveillance for disease. Without veterinarians participating in food security and safety, the entire food supply of a nation may be compromised.
