As usual, I have numerous people to thank for their help. Without them, the book couldnot have been finished.

Aleli Clary - proofreading, technology, and book design.

     Jennifer Cardey - proofreading

Lauren Cardey - conversion of historical obituaries and articles to text form,

and adding them to both the book, and to findagrave.com

Dean Enderlin - for information on some Veterans, and for his plans toresearch our Civil War Veterans

Jacob Maus - proofreading and editing

Margie Mohler - research on veterans without an obituary

My family, and especially my husband Paul, for his unwavering support, as I have

worked on this cemetery off and on, but mostly on, for the past six years.

To the countless Find A Grave contributors who have provided so much information to

the online memorials of this cemetery.

To the Napa City County Library for providing the newspaper historical archives.

To the woman who inspired me to write this book, Elizabeth Hart Alessio, and to her

father, Lee Hart , without whom neither of my books could have been done.

Whether you are a Veteran, a relative of a Veteran, aneducator, or a “taphophile”, this is a book worth a look.

I have been fortunate to be one of the individual’s who hashelped in completing this book, which is the brainchild ofDenise Ratterman Jackson, the book’s author; she has spentan enormous amount of time researching the informationand history provided in this book. Without her love andadmiration for our Veterans, this book would not have

    reached its completion.

This book contains information about each Veteran buried atthe George C. Yount Cemetery. Arranged alphabetically, each Veteran will now have information about the day theywere born, died, the war they fought in, and othernoteworthy information. Some will have an obituary or a

newspaper article which provides a glimpse of the great life they lived, their accomplishments, and the loved ones left behind.

These Veterans sacrificed their lives to protect our nation. These brave men and women havefought wars all the way from the American Indian Wars of the 1600s to the Vietnam War in the1900s.

In honor of their great sacrifice, we are pleased to provide you this opportunity to know thembetter with this unique and detailed compilation as presented by Denise Ratterman Jackson.

The book also contains a map guide on how to find their plot at the George C. Yount Cemetery.Perhaps, you will be able to find time this Memorial Day to visit the graves of our valiantsoldiers.

On a side note, a “taphophile” is someone who has a passion for, and enjoyment of cemeteries. You’ll never know, you might end up being one after your journey at the cemetery.

When writing my first George C. Yount

Cemetery book with a map and directory of allthose who are buried, there were four ways inwhich I knew the individual was a Veteran:

    1.  The inscription told me so.2.  There was a small metal pole for a flag.3.  An old cemetery ledger indicated they were

veterans.4.   Josh and Lance Heide provided a list. (They

have been placing flags on Veteran gravesites for many years.)

When the Napa County Library historicalarchives were released, I researched the Veterans’ obituaries, and found evidence that not allwere veterans, and not all had an obituary that could be found without more extensiveresearch.

In my first George C. Yount Cemetery Book, I used criteria 1 through 4 to determine if theperson buried was a Veteran. I have since learned that #2, (the pole), can indicate either: a) aVeteran; b) a Mason; or c) a person honored for another reason.

In this, my second George C. Yount Cemetery Book, I am using two additional ways indicated

    below.

    5.  Research done by Margie Mohler, Yountville Councilperson.6.  Napa County Library Historical Archives.

Obituary or Article:Renowned Napa Valley grape-grower Nathan Fay died at his home Wednesday, Feb. 14. at the age of 86. He had struggled

with Parkinson’s disease for many years.

The Oakland native gained fame among his peers for taking the risk of planting the first cabernet sauvignon grapes in the

Stags Leap District, a region many in the industry in the early 1960s felt was too cool for what is today one of the

    appellation’s prized grape varieties.

In planting those initial 15 acres of vines, Nathan Fay laid the groundwork for what the Stags Leap winegrowing district has

    become today.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Fay attended the Michigan School of Mining prior to settling in the Napa Valley.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, of Yountville; a sister, Jane Bryan, of San Rafael; nephew Peter Bryan and his wife,

Mary Ann, or Napa; and niece Nancy Chambers, of Solana Beach; three stepsons; and many step-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his first wife of 51 years, Nellie, who died in December or 1995.

    Fay Vineyards, Stags Leap District

    Nathan Fay

Although trained as a mining engineer, after serving in World War II Nathan Fay wanted to farm. He and his wife Nellie

came to Napa Valley from Visalia in 1951. He bought 205 acres in what is now Stags Leap District, tended its diverse crops

and studied new varieties of grape to plant. Farm adviser Jim Lider recommended Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1961, Nathan’s

Cabernet was the first significant planting south of Oakville.

In 1967, Nathan had the chance to buy additional acreage then in prunes. He asked his good friend and fellow home

winemaker, Father TomTurnbull, to come in on half. Tom and his wife, Mary Jane, who lived in the St. John’s rectory on

Stone Crest in Napa, bought their half, planted Merlot at Nathan’s suggestion—he said it caused less stress—and built an

adobe house into which they moved after eleven years of making every brick of it themselves.Nathan planted more Cabernet and Merlot on his new acreage and sold his grapes to Charles Krug, Phelps, Heitz (Heitz

Cellars produced five vintages designated Fay Vineyard),Chimney Rock, and Carneros Creek as well as to avid home

winemakers such as Earl Thollander. Nathan’s own homemade wine had inspired Warren Winiarski to buy land and make

wine next door to Nathan. In 1986, Nathan sold most of his vineyard to Warren and a patch to Joe Phelps. He and Nellie

continued to live in their house on Warren’s land. In 1988 Father Tom Turnbull died and in 1995 Nellie Fay passed away.

Nathan and Mary Jane married in 1996, and Nathan moved into the adobe; he and Mary Jane looked after her vineyard and

he oversaw Turn bull home winemaking until his death. Stags Leap District Winegrowers, in Nathan’s honor, annually fund a

graduate student in viticultural research in the Viticulture and Enology Department at UC Davis. In 2006 Mary Jane donated

Nathan’s farming journals to the Napa Valley Wine Library.

Dick says Nathan introduced him to the art and joy of grape growing and winemaking by giving Dick his first taste of

"You always knew where Thurman Gates stood," said Yountville restaurateur Don Schmitt, who served on the council with

    Gates for nearly a decade.

"We had a lot of differences along the way," Schmitt added, "but when it came to things that really counted, we always got

together.“Thurman Gates was not a man with ulterior motives. He told you where he stood on every issue and I appreciated that."

When he was 17 years old, he came to California and lived in the Bakersfield area until World War II when he moved to

    Richmond.

Mr. Gates worked in the asbestos industry for 18 years.

In 1959, he moved to Yountville where he was co-owner and operator of the Gateway Mobile Home Lodge.

A member of Silverado Country Club and the Napa Municipal Golf Course, he was an excellent golfer.

He also enjoyed traveling by motor home, and his family and friends.

    Obituary or Article:Fatal Accident.

A terrible accident occurred on the Napa Valley railroad just above Yountville Monday morning. An old man named Henry

Naramore, who lives in Yountville, started that morning to drive over to Mr. LaRue's place. In the cart with him was a little

known whether he saw the train coining or not. At any rate, the horse stopped on the track and the engine dashed into

them. Mr. Naramore was thrown out on one aide and the boy on the other. The cart was completely wrecked, and the

horse and dog killed. The Cassidy boy though thrown a long distance, miraculously escaped without serious injury. Mr.

Naramore had one of his legs terribly crushed and was otherwise badly bruised. He was picked up and removed as soon as

Cal.; and that he came to his death by being knocked out of a cart, while driving over a railroad crossing, by the morning

down train from Calistoga to San Francisco, on the 27th day of July, A. D. 1891, and the direct cause of his death was the
