Faith and Values -- Reprinted from the Indianapolis Star –

Christians sometimes face tough choice with war

The church has done a lot of thinking around the idea of Christians going to war. Some Christians are pacifists, saying “no” to all violence or the bearing of arms. Such pacifists maintain that, in light of Jesus’ command to love our enemies, Christianity is not compatible with killing. Christian thinkers in the “just war” tradition, however, know that sometimes in our broken and sinful world, we are forced to choose whom we are to love – and sometimes we cannot love all at the same time. Consider this thought experiment. Pretend that you are an American soldier who was approaching the gates of one of Nazi Germany’s many concentration camps. As you approach the camp, you simultaneously see two scenes. One scene shows inmates being killed and thrown into the furnaces. The other scene is what you see through the sites of your rifle: the Nazi guard, who is making sure that no inmate escapes the camp. At this point, you have a choice: You can say to yourself, “As a Christian, I’m called to love even my enemy (Matthew 5:44), so therefore, I will not pull the trigger on that Nazi guard.” Gregory S. Clapper, PhD Alternatively, you can focus on the victims being led to their slaughter and see them as your neighbor whom you are also called to love (Matthew 22:39). “Just war” theorists say that if we don’t love those neighbors by shielding them from slaughter, then we are not even coming up to the standards of the “tax collectors” and the “Gentiles” in the Matthew 5 passage quoted above – we are not even loving our brothers and sisters who love us. Yes, to love one’s enemies is what Jesus says it means to be “perfect” (Matthew 5:48). But it is a pretty twisted biblical interpretation to think that we should take more care for the enemy, than for our brothers and sisters. Such choices are real. In this broken and sinful world, sometimes Christians are called to choose whom they will love and how. That is a tragic view of what it means to be a believer in our broken world, but most Christians think that closing our eyes to the evil done to our neighbors would be even more tragic. So, to be clear: I am not here talking about “fighting for the faith,” that is, fighting to spread Christianity. Christian faith can never be compelled, so it makes no sense to try to “convert” people at the point of a sword. But Christians can – and should – fight for certain causes that even the most secular of people endorse, such as to defend the weak from slaughter or to fend off an imminent attack. Because I do believe that sometimes the resort to violence is the lesser of two evils, I felt I needed to put my life behind what I believe. In addition to my full-time academic career, I spent 24 years as a United Methodist chaplain serving in the National Guard. I believe I have faithfully served my God and my church in both the academic gown as well as in my country’s uniform. Gregory S. Clapper, PhD Professor of Religion and Philosophy The University of Indianapolis, and Affiliate Professor of United Methodist Studies, Christian Theological Seminary Chaplain, Colonel, USAF, Retired Dr. Clapper is a professor of religion and philosophy at the University of Indianapolis. In his service with the Air Force, he had five voluntary overseas deployments and earned, among other awards, two Meritorious Service Medals and the Legion of Merit. He is also a Life Member of Greenwood VFW Post 5864.

A Message from the Commander . . .

Dear VFW and Auxiliary Members: I am happy to say that I have returned to duty on a regular basis after being off for nearly seven weeks. My wife and I are very thankful for the food, cards and wishes during the time I have been away from the VFW. “Being away” isn’t always what it seems to be. I was on the phone making calls, answering e-mails and organizing what I could while recuperating. A couple of weeks ago my wife drove me to the heart doctor at the VA; Sherri Jones took me to the statehouse; and I drove myself to Walgreen’s and Burger King. (The doctor did tell me I could drive in light traffic). Being ill is not what it’s cracked up to be. Sure, you get some time off; my wife looked after me and made sure I did what I was supposed to do, but I felt inadequate because I couldn’t do anything myself. Thanks to everyone for “holding down the fort!” Special thanks to my Commander Steve Milbourn wife Patti; my family and friends; Sherri Jones, for overseeing things at the Post in my absence; Chaplain, Ken Hall; and Auxiliary President Beth Martin for putting together meals for us. I hope I have not overlooked anyone. If I did, it is not on purpose. Now let’s go forward from here. Our Post and Auxiliary has been involved in many events since the beginning of the year in June. Remember, we are not doing this for our own accolades or “pats on the back”. We are involved in the work at our VFW to take care of homeless veterans, veterans who are down and out, and families of veterans. Depending on the situation, we also help families who are not veterans, but part of our community. Over the years, our Post has had many leaders. Some stay for a year or two and then go on to something else. There are some that have stayed longer. Keeping proper records including repair and maintenance logs has for whatever reason has been difficult. When we move into our new facility, we would appreciate any help with minor tasks like making sure our fire extinguishers are up-to-date and get recharged in a timely manner; our furnace filters are changed when necessary; lights are checked, etc. This is a job that would take approximately one-two hours a week. In addition, there always seems to be many small tasks that need to be done daily at the Post. I am hopeful that some of our younger veterans can and will step up and some of our older veterans will join to help as they can. Volunteering two to three hours every couple of weeks would be terrific. It would give our “regulars” a break. Many of them stop in and help do something six days a week. Our most pressing needs are help with our Wednesday night Bingo. Our Auxiliary also needs help with their Monday night “Bar Bingo” and on occasion Saturday, “Euchre”. Also, keep in mind these items – Bricks – Have you purchased your bricks yet? If not, review the flyer on our website – greenwoodvfw.com or stop by the VFW and pick up a form. Donations – Are you interested in donating toward our project or do you know someone who may be interested in helping put us over the top. Plans – We will be displaying various plans showing the inside of our building, the outside of our building and the parking lot area. They will be displayed on the VFW walls at our current location.

Dinner served to any VFW member in honor of former husband “Doc”

Thanksgiving dinner from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

VFW Post 5864 Auxiliary President Beth Martin came up with an unusual idea. Since Beth’s children live out of the area and her husband passed away from effects of Agent Orange in 2012, she wanted to do something for those who were without family on Thanksgiving Day.

She proposed to the House Committee that she cook a meal and have members who had no family and no other place to go, could come in and

eat free of charge. Beth has been doing this at her home for the past five years. To know what she needs to cook, if you are interested, you must call, provide your name and phone number and then just simply show up on Thursday, Nov. 22 from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

The meal will consist of turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, fried corn, sweet potato casserole, green beans, a salad and pumpkin pie, cherry cheese bars an apple upside-down pie. Rolls and butter will also be served. Soft drinks will also be served free. Any other drink will have to be purchased. You are welcome to _____________________________________________________

donate any amount for your meal to help offset costs incurred by Beth and her helpers. Please call Steve Milbourn at 317-525-7291 or e-mail him at [email protected] to confirm your reservation. The deadline to confirm that you will be attending this meal is Monday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.

“Ky” prepares for

2019 horseshoes

Wednesday, Sept. 26 “Ky” Caudill got to work on his “pet” project – the VFW’s annual horseshoe pitching contests. He was disassembling the current fixtures to ready them for the move to the new site. His history at this Post as well as many other members is unbelievable. “Ky”, Don Byers and others plan to rebuild the horseshoe pits at the Post’s new location off Commerce Parkway W. Dr. The new horseshoe pits, according to “Ky” will be ready for the 2019 season. “Ky” shovels back the sand to take out the horseshoe stake.

Arkansas Representative and Senators from Arkansas and Indiana

H.R. 4843 concedes herbicide exposure in Thailand

Earlier this year, Representative Bruce Westerman of Arkansas introduced H.R. 4843, a bill that would concede herbicide exposure to all veterans who served at any military installation in Thailand during the Vietnam Era for purposes of determining their eligibility for VA benefits. This measure is a companion bill to S. 2105, introduced by Senators John Boozman, Arkansas and Joe Donnelly, Indiana. While VA's internal manual acknowledges herbicide exposure for specific military occupational specialties on the perimeter of eight specific Thai Royal Air Force Bases, Thai statutes and regulations do not automatically recognize veteran exposure to herbicides while serving in Thailand during the Vietnam Era. H.R. 4843 would automatically concede herbicide exposure for all veterans who served at military installations in Thailand during the Vietnam Era, regardless of the base, duty on the perimeter or military occupational specialty. As a result, the presumptive diseases currently associated with herbicide exposure, including spina bifida for children, would be applicable to all veterans who served at military installations in Thailand during the Vietnam Era.

Fall and Winter donations needed for veterans

VFW to help veterans at Oct. 11 visit to Domiciliary

Please be thinking about donating some winter items to be given to residents of the VA Domiciliary. Bring any items that you have to the VFW by Tuesday, Oct. 9, for everything to get organized for the visit on Thursday, Oct. 11. Call the Post at 317-888-2488 with any donations you have available. Volunteers are always needed. You are welcome to meet us at the VFW around 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11 and leave from there. The Domiciliary is just west of Ivy Tech at 9045 E.

59th St., on the old Ft. Benjamin Harrison campus. The Domiciliary Care Program is the Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) oldest health care program. Established through legislation passed in the late 1860's, the Domiciliary’s purpose was to provide a home for disabled volunteer soldiers of the Civil War. Domiciliary care was initially established to provide services to economically-disadvantaged Veterans. The Domiciliary has evolved from a "Soldiers' Home" to become an

active clinical rehabilitation and treatment program for male and female Veterans and domiciliary programs are now integrated with the Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation and Treatment Programs. Bingo is played, and snacks are provided. The Domiciliary houses both men and women veterans who are homeless and in need. The team that works with veterans at the Domiciliary each month needs additional help each month. George and Connie Wallace will be retiring early next year and moving to Florida and we will need two or three replacements for them. They have both been fantastic workers with this project.

The VFW has a Popcorn Machine. The machine and

popcorn both cost money. Please be considerate and

donate some change each time you get popcorn.

To honor our Prisoners of War, Missing in Action and Unaccounted for

POW-MIA day ceremony held at Greenwood VFW

The United States’ National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed across the nation on the third Friday of September each year. Greenwood VFW Post 5864 held their ceremony in mid-September to honor our MIA/POW’s. Jr. Vice Commander Sherri Jones and Auxiliary Treasurer Cindy Coram presented the program to those assembled at the Post. What Do People Do? -- Many Americans across the United States pause to remember the sacrifices and service of those who are or were prisoners of war (POW), as well as those who are

missing in action (MIA), and their families. All military installations fly the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag, which symbolizes the nation’s remembrance of those who were imprisoned while serving in conflicts and those who remain missing. Remembrance ceremonies and other events to observe the day are also held in places such as the Pentagon, war memorials and museums. Public Life -- National POW/MIA Recognition Day is not a federal public holiday in the U.S., but it is a national observance. Background -- As of March 29, 2017, 1,611 Americans remained unaccounted for, of which 1,023 were classified as

Cindy Coram, at left, and Sherri Jones before the ceremony. further pursuit; 497 as no further pursuit and 91 as deferred. Symbols -- The National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag symbolizes the United States’ resolve to never forget POWs or those who served their country in conflicts and are still missing. Newt Heisley designed the flag. The flag’s design features a silhouette of a young man, which is based on Mr. Heisley’s son, who was medically discharged from the military. As Mr. Heisley looked at his returning son’s gaunt features, he imagined what life was for those behind barbed wire fences on foreign shores. He then sketched the profile of his son as the new flag's design was created in his mind. The flag features a white disk bearing in black silhouette a man’s bust, a watch tower with a guard on patrol, and a strand of barbed wire. White letters “POW” and “MIA”, with a white five-pointed star in between, are typed above the disk. Below the disk is a black and white wreath above the motto “You Are Not Forgotten” written in white, capital letters. The flag can also be displayed on Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day. The flag can be displayed at the Capitol, the White House, the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, national cemeteries, various government buildings, and major military installations.

A Band of Brothers

A thinning group of those visiting the annual Kokomo Vietnam Veterans get-together from Greenwood VFW Post 5864 are shown above. Front row, left to right, G.K. Puckett, Mike Delaney, Phil McGuire, and Steve Keever. Back row, left to right, is Dan Armstrong, “Butch” Umphrey, Roger Crum and Mike Tomes. Dave Constant and Mary Canner also attended. Less than 30% of the nearly 2.8 million Vietnam veterans who served in or near Vietnam are still living. That’s about 840,000. __________________________________________________________________________________________________

DAV seeks donations to continue operating vans

Jim McIntire, the Johnson County Van Coordinator and a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 60 is seeking donations to keep the Johnson County Van Program going. In the past three years he has spent virtually every weekend collecting money to purchase the vans to transport veterans to the VA Hospital and other appointments. He has had little help in this endeavor. Currently there are three American Legions, two VFW’s and one DAV which has participated in the Johnson County program. They are American Legion 205 in Franklin; 233 in Edinburgh and 252 in Greenwood; VFW’s 5864 in Greenwood and 6978 in New Whiteland; and DAV Chapter 60 in Greenwood. Jim has decided to step back and let someone else come forth and take over the program. With that said, Jim remarked, “We need all six of the service organizations mentioned above to each donate a minimum of $1,000 annually to continue the program.” McIntire stated further, “The Johnson County program has a remarkable, empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. In 2017 we transported 2,257 veterans over 40,630 miles driven”. Several of the counties surrounding Johnson County have given up the “Van Program” and the veterans without transportation suffer and they do not get the attention they need. If you wish to help this program continue and desire to donate some time, please call Jim McIntire at 317-885-9209 or e-mail him at [email protected]. Checks can be made out to the DAV and mailed to Jim McIntire, 1594 Millridge Dr., Greenwood, IN 46143. The donation is tax deductible.

Military history over the years in October . . .

1832 – Texas political delegates convened at San Felipe de Austin to petition for changes in the governance of Mexican Texas. 1878 – General Lew Wallace was sworn in as governor of New Mexico Territory. He went on to deal with the Lincoln County War, Billy the Kid and wrote Ben-Hur. 1880 – John Philip Sousa started his 12-year tour as director of the US Marine Band. He premiered many of his marches and produced the first commercial phonograph recordings. 1890 – Congress created the Weather Bureau, moving the Weather Warning Service from the US Army Signal Corps to the Department of Agriculture. 1918 – While President Woodrow Wilson was attempting to establish “peace without victory” with Germany, the German UB-123 torpedoed RMS Leinster, a civilian mail and passenger ferry, off the coast of Ireland. Leinster was usually escorted by a Royal Air Force airship as a precaution, but on Oct. 10, 1918, the ferry set out alone and was sunk; 564 passengers and crewmen perished, many of them American and Allied troops. After Leinster, the Germans lost their chance for an easy peace.

1942 – In New Guinea, Gen. MacArthur issues orders for the Allied advance on Gona and Buna. Australian forces have already begun to move forward along the Kokoda Trail. A US force is to move over the parallel Kapa Kapa Trail to join the Australians in cutting off the Japanese retreat at the Kumusi River. There are also to be landings along the north coast between Milne bay and Cape nelson, especially in Wanigela. 1950 – The ROK 3rd Infantry Division crossed the 38th parallel in pursuit of the retreating In Mun Gun, the North Korean Army. The U.S. Army’s Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment arrived in Korea and was assigned to the 3rd

Infantry Division. The USS Magpie struck a mine while sweeping a channel two miles off Chuksan, becoming the first U.S. Navy vessel to be sunk during the war. Twenty-one members of her 33-man-crew were lost. 1951 – The all-African-American 24th Infantry Regiment and 159th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, were disbanded and the personnel reassigned to formerly all-white units. Other formerly all-African-American units were infused with white soldiers, thus beginning racial integration in the Army. 1968 – The 1st Marine Division and 1st MAW were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, for action in Da Nang, Vietnam. 1971 – The UN General Assembly voted to admit the People’s Republic of China and expel Nationalist China (Taiwan). 1972 – The first female FBI agents were hired. 1973 – Vice President of the United States Spiro Agnew resigns after being charged with evasion of federal income tax. 1974 – The US Air Force fired its 1st ICBM. 1975 – Israel formally signed the Sinai accord with Egypt. 1979 – Panama assumed sovereignty over Canal Area. 1983 – 1,800 U.S. Marines and Rangers, assisted by 300 soldiers from six Caribbean nations, invaded Grenada at the order of President Reagan, who said the action was needed to protect U.S. citizens there. Helicopters touched down at Pearls Airport at 5 a.m. on 25 Oct., the PRA–People’s Revolutionary Army–greeted the Marines with bursts from small arms and machine guns. In pairs, the Marines scrambled out of the helo’s and immediately dug in, waiting for the choppers to leave. Three Soviet-made 12.7mm guns on a nearby hill fired at helicopters bringing in the second assault–Marines of Fox Company–to the town of Grenville, just south of Pearls, at 6 a.m. Sea- Cobra attack ◼ Continued to page 11

Military history over the years in October . . .

◼ Continued from page 10 helicopters were called in to silence the guns and Fox Company landed amid light mortar fire. Echo and Fox companies moved slowly and cautiously after their landings; after a couple of hours, most of the resistance at Pearls and Grenville was beaten down. Army Rangers, arriving at the airfield at Point Salines at dawn the same day in C-130 [Hercules] aircraft, met much stiffer resistance than the Marines were encountering at Pearls. To avoid the anti-aircraft fire, the Rangers jumped from a very low altitude–500 feet. Machine-gun fire blasted at aircraft and Rangers on the ground. But US Air Force AC-130 [Spectre] gunships silenced the hostile fire with devastatingly accurate blasts. The airfield at Point Salines was blocked, a clear sign an assault was expected. 1996 – Operation Frontier Shield commences. It is the largest counter-narcotics operation in Coast Guard history. Frontier Shield was the cornerstone of a strategy and a genuine case study for the regional impact of interdiction. The Coast Guard, in conjunction with interagency partners, conducted a large surge operation in the maritime approaches to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Change made by National VFW to subscription dues process

Annual dues now to expire on last day of the month

Good morning, comrades! Last week we explained some changes to the subscription dues process, and how Annual members' dues will now expire on the last day of the month, making it easier for Quartermasters to help manage a Post's membership. This brings us to the topic of retention. As it has been said time and time again, retention of our members is one of the most important factors in maintaining a strong organization. The VFW loses members through three methods: 1) Attrition. This is an unavoidable fact of life, members are going to pass away. 2) Removal. Members who are removed from the rolls for reasons of ineligibility or disciplinary/ administrative action. 3) Lack of retention. Thousands of Annual members do not renew their membership dues. Of these three categories, the third is the one that we have the most ability to control. From various lapsed member contacts and surveys, the following have been quoted as reasons that many of our Annual members have chosen to discontinue their membership:

-- "The dues are too much."

-- "My Post doesn't do anything, it's just the same five people at every meeting." -- "I didn't feel welcome at my Post / nobody reached out to me." -- "I didn't get the help I needed." When the Post's membership committee contacts members who are close to their

expiration date, these are factors we need to be focusing on. If a member is in financial straits, it is our duty to help them out. Comrades, there is no more important facet of our mission than helping our fellow veterans. Allowing a comrade in need to fall through the cracks because someone was too busy to contact them is a failure of the most tragic proportions. Many of our lapsed members say that they were disappointed with lack of activity in the Post. If this is the case, and the Post isn't getting out in the community, reaching out to veterans, performing our mission of service - then the member is absolutely correct. They should be disappointed! When Post leadership doesn't make the attempt to reach out to their membership and ensure that they are taken care of and made to feel welcome, then we are going to lose those members. This is an area that too many of our Posts, Districts, and Departments are neglecting to address, and our membership is suffering for it. Yet it is not an unfixable problem! With dedication and hard work, this is a trend we can reverse. The first step is to ensure that your Post Quartermaster is regularly using the Online Membership System and keeping track of when Annual members are approaching their expiration date. In smaller Posts, the duty of contacting these members can be handled by a single person, usually the Membership Chairman, or the Adjutant/Quartermaster; but it is more effective to have a team approach this responsibility. Show these members that there's more than just a single person representing the Post. The next step is to address issues that affect retention. Member dissatisfaction is the major issue, and if your Post is seeing members leaving because they're not happy with the way things are, those areas where they are dissatisfied are likely ones that should be addressed and focused upon. Call your members who haven't attended meetings, check up on them, let them know that they're part of the Post family regardless of whether they attend meetings. Another important factor is members with undeliverable addresses. When your Quartermaster looks at the Post Query, members who are shown in red text have an undeliverable address. This should be an immediate cause for action - try to contact that member via phone or email and get a valid mailing address for them. Ask other Post members if they've been in contact with the undeliverable member. If we cannot contact our members, they're likely to fall off the roster.

We often say that recruiting is like making a sale - show a prospective member something worth their time and investment, and they will buy in. Retention is like making a repeat customer. Show them that their investment provided value, and that continued investment produces further value. Membership - like any relationship, business or personal - requires constant communication and effort. Comrades, I will be the first to say that it is not an easy job. If it were, anyone could step up and take the reins of leadership at the Post, District, or Department level. But regardless, it is a job that needs to be done if our organization is to grow and remain strong. Today, let's all pledge to make retention a priority at our Posts. Post Commanders and Quartermasters need to keep in contact with members and make sure they're an active part of the Post. District leadership - follow up with your Posts when you see their numbers fluctuate during the year. See what assistance and mentorship you can provide. Departments - find ways to incentivize retention and strong membership, be sure to acknowledge and recognize those Posts that are succeeding and to assist those that are struggling. Retention is one of the pillars of strong membership. Let's all work together to show that our motto still rings true: that No One Does More for Veterans. As always, the National Headquarters is here to provide support, training, materials, and anything else you need to reach these goals. We’re just an email or a phone call away. In addition, under the Membership Recruiting and Retention page - http://www.vfw.org/my-vfw/vfw-training-and-support/membership-recruiting-and-retention - you can find training videos, webinars, as well as downloadable forms, brochures, and posters. If you need it, we will most likely have it available on the website for you or you can order it from the Membership Dept. -- Matt Nute -- VFW Membership Dept.

Opinion -- Young Veteran, Why Don’t You Care?

By Keith Lucas – Reprinted with permission.

A disturbing trend is showing younger military veterans falling away from Veteran Service Organizations. It’s time to address this issue at the local level. I recently read an article “Why are the younger Veterans avoiding the Veteran Service Organizations (VSO),” written by Les Davis, a National Recruiter for AMVETS. Before I get to the specifics of the article, I want to give my background. I am a 37-year-old veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2004), that is very actively involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). I am also a very busy husband and father, who works as a web designer. The above-mentioned article basically criticizes all Veteran Service Organizations, like the VFW, American Legion, and AMVETS for failing to do enough to attract younger veterans. My first reaction was “yes…they don’t do enough” and I agreed with most of the suggestions for improvement. I shared it with a group of fellow veteran leaders. One of them said, “I am so sick of this crap.” This caught me off guard and I was rather confused at first, but he further explained that he was tired of hearing the negatives; the why veterans are not joining instead of the why they are or why they should. His feedback got me thinking about it, and I decided to write this counter article. I’ll be honest, I point the finger at my fellow younger veteran, not the VSO. So why are my fellow young Veterans avoiding VSOs?

The top excuses I have heard are: -- “I am too busy. I just don’t have the time right now.”

-- “I don’t have the money right now.” -- “I don’t see what I get for joining.” -- “I don’t want to be the only female.”

-- “I didn’t feel welcome there.”

-- “I don’t like long meetings.” -- “I don’t need help with VA stuff.” When did we as veterans start thinking like this? When did we become so entitled, to the point that “what’s in it for me” is most important? Why do VSOs feel they have to give you a gift to get you to care about helping our fellow veterans? It’s not just Iraq and Afghanistan veterans that are avoiding the VSOs. Vietnam veterans are staying away too. I won’t pretend to act like I know what it felt like when they came home. My homecoming was a celebration, that hasn’t stopped. But how is avoiding other Vietnam veterans and younger veterans helping? We need you, frankly you understand the hell some of us experienced better than anyone. Instead of dwelling on why my fellow young veterans are not joining or why they seem to have chosen not to continue to serve, I will attempt to express why you need to join a VSO now, not later. Reason 1 -- Duty… the required amount of time needed to be a member of a VSO is exactly zero minutes. When you join and do nothing but pay your approximately $35 per year or so, you still help the organization. When the VFW goes to Washington to fight for your benefits, the number of members is our strength. The more members the organization has, the more our elected know they better listen. You can honestly be as active or inactive as you choose. You can come and go as your life allows, but we need you to join plain and simple, if for no other reason than to protect veteran benefits. Reason 2 -- Selfless Service… Most veterans joined the military because they felt a calling to serve and during your years in uniform that grows. By joining a VSO, you are helping your fellow veterans and continuing your service. I have survivor’s guilt and actively participating helps me honor them. ◼ Continued to page 15

Opinion -- Young Veteran, Why Don’t You Care?

◼ Continued from page 14 Reason 3 -- Loyalty… There is something amazing about the bond between veterans. By joining a VSO, you are honoring your elder veterans that started them. You are connecting and being there for your fellow veterans, and you are making things better for future veterans. Reason 4 -- Fun… You get to surround yourself with people that like to cuss, make fun of each other’s branch of service, slam challenge coins down, harass the medics, talk trash of today’s soldiers, and laugh hard like you did with “your guys”. So, I ask you today, have you forgotten your Soldiers Creed? You are “a warrior and a member of a team.” Your team needs you, and you probably may not know it, but you need them. I love my Post, from the WWII veterans that opened it, to the Korea veteran that works every Bingo night, to the Vietnam guys, to the younger veterans and their families. As a young veteran, you have the “key to the city” to make the post your own. The older veterans want to make it work for you. They want their beloved group to continue. If you don’t like something about the post, then work to make it better. Don’t expect it to be perfect, make it perfect. You once stood tall and said “I will never accept defeat. I will never quit.” Have you quit serving? Do you not have the time to help your fellow veteran? It is important and necessary, and joining a VSO is something every veteran should do today, not eventually. VSOs don’t need a better marketing strategy to get our generation to join; you just need to remember how it felt to serve something bigger than yourself and to be a part of something great. Keith Lucas is the Post Surgeon for VFW Post 5923 in Camdenton, Missouri.

Please do not go behind the bar

Kitchen and behind the bar is always off limits

Recently members and other patrons of the Post have been either cutting through the kitchen to the Banquet Room or going into the kitchen for other reasons. The kitchen is off limits to anyone other than those individuals working there or current officers. There have also been some members going behind the bar for various reasons. Again, going behind the bar is off limits to anyone other than those individuals working there or officers needing to be in that area. There are no exceptions to these rules. It is a security issue and needs to be followed implicitly. If you need something, notify the bartender on duty or the Kitchen help in the kitchen and they will help you. If you need a soft drink or a glass of water, do not go behind the bar and get it. The bartender on duty will get it for you. Thanks for your understanding.

VFW Member Chris Vogel takes a ride on a B-17

Chris Vogel took a flight on a World War II vintage B-17 “Flying Fortress” in August. The rides were offered at the Greenwood Airport for a fee. Chris said he enjoyed the ride so much that he would pay for another individual to go with him next year. In the top photo, Chris stands outside this B-17 and in the bottom photo you can see the machine gun turret mounted on the B-17. The B-17 developed a reputation as an effective bomber, dropping more bombs than any other U.S. aircraft in World War II. Of the 1.5 million tons of bombs dropped on Germany and its occupied territories by U.S. aircraft, 640,000 tons were dropped from B-17s. The United States Eighth Air Force, based at many airfields in central and southern England, and the Fifteenth Air Force, based in Italy, complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in the Combined Bomber Offensive to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for the invasion of France in 1944.

Employees cannot drink alcohol while working

Greenwood VFW Post 5864 House Committee has previously voted not to allow drinking alcoholic beverages while working as a paid employee. That action became effective last year. At one time, there were some employees who did drink while working. According to several insurance companies who were contacted at the time, employees should never be allowed to drink while clocked in and working as a paid employee. Those individuals who choose to drink are

jeopardizing the Post’s insurance; and an injury could occur at any time and the Post could certainly be liable. “In the long run,” Commander Steve Milbourn stated, “any employee drinking alcoholic beverages while working as a paid employee puts not only the Post in jeopardy but puts themselves in jeopardy of injury and the possibility of losing their job.”

If a bartender serves an employee while they are “clocked in”, the bartender could possibly be as culpable as is the employee. Refusal to abide by the rule could lead to a verbal warning, written warning, suspension and eventually termination. Commander Milbourn remarked, “This is the right thing to do. We are a business, and as such our VFW members, the Greenwood community and our guests want us to act appropriately.” According to various studies, drinking on the job can also cause -- loss of productivity and poor performance; lateness and absenteeism; safety concerns; effect on team morale and employee relations; bad behavior or poor discipline; adverse effects on company image and customer relations.

VFW Auxiliary News from the Treasurer . . .

Greetings Brothers & Sisters of the Auxiliary:

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am Cindy Coram, your Auxiliary Secretary and Treasurer. I am a Vietnam Era Air Force Veteran. I was stationed at Dover AFB and Charleston AFB. I also served 3 years in the Air Force reserve at Grissom AFB, working in the command post.

Our new President, Beth Martin and I are working tirelessly to continue to recruit new members. We also value all our volunteers and encourage all our members to volunteer in some fashion. Examples: donate desserts, volunteer for bar bingo, volunteer for euchre, donate time for buddy poppies, volunteer for special events, share your time spent volunteering at your churches and schools with an auxiliary member to support our auxiliary’s commitment to our communities. A question I have had is “Where does my dues money go”? Now that I am the Treasurer I can answer that question. The State and National Auxiliary share $9.50 to support our programs; $5.50 goes to the Cancer Aid and Research program; $2.50 for over age 75, gifted dues’ and $2.50 goes into our Relief Fund. We encourage all Auxiliary members to attend our meetings to see all

Cindy Coram the wonderful programs we support. We also would like to extend a helping Secretary-Treasurer hand to any of our members in need of assistance. ________________________________________________________________________________

Veteran’s Day Poppy Drive is Saturday, Nov. 10

The Veteran’s Day Poppy Drive for Greenwood VFW Post 5864 is scheduled for Saturday, November 10. The Post has two Poppy Drive’s each year – one near Memorial Day in May and the other around Veteran’s Day in November. Approximately 30 volunteers are needed to help with the distribution of Poppies at several business locations. If you wish to help, e-mail Junior Vice Commander Sherri Jones at [email protected] or call her at 253-278-1980 or e-mail Commander Steve Milbourn at [email protected] or call him at 317-525-7291. After becoming chairperson of the Buddy Poppy Committee a few years ago, she remarked, “Offering Poppies for donations is the only method that enables us to build up our Veteran’s Relief Fund to help homeless and down-and-out veterans and their families”. “Our organization began in 1899 because of soldiers returning from war and not having anyone to help them,” she stated. Sherri continued, “We owe it to all veterans to do what we can to help them in their time of need”. For some of you who may read this news story, we simply need help for 4-5 hours and if you need to, you can bring a chair and sit down. Please consider this very worthwhile endeavor whether you are a VFW member or an Auxiliary member. A sign-up sheet has been placed on the bulletin board near the ATM machine. We will meet at the Post at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 10 and be in position by 9 a.m. A minimum of 2 people will

be placed at each location. Sam’s Club and the Walmart on Emerson will be “manned” on Friday, November 9. One hundred (100%) percent of the money collected, goes into the Post's Relief Fund which helps veterans, their families and children; homeless veterans; veterans needing gas, groceries, utility bills paid, etc. The requirement to receive aid is that the individual must show a DD-214 or a document showing that they served and were discharged honorably. The two Poppy Drives are extremely important

15 KIA’s to be recognized

Johnson Co. Veterans will be honored by VFW 5864

Fifteen soldiers from the U.S. Army and U.S. Marines have given the ultimate sacrifice since the beginning of the Vietnam War through May 2006. There were 12 U.S. Army and 3 U.S. Marines whose “home of record” was Johnson County, Indiana at the time of their enlistment who died while serving in a combat zone. Greenwood VFW Post 5864 has decided to recognize and honor them with a special plaque in an area at their new Post. After hearing this announcement, VFW 5864 Life Member and Korean War veteran Bobby Jennett remarked, “What an absolutely wonderful idea to remember those in our county that were killed while protecting our freedoms. I am really happy that our VFW decided to recognize these people.” Three of the 15 were killed in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. They are listed alphabetically and include: Brian D. Hazelgrove, U.S. Army, Edinburgh, KIA (killed in action) on Jan. 23, 2004; Paul Martin Heltzel, U.S. Army, Franklin, KIA on Mar. 15, 2005 and Joseph Eugene Proctor, U.S. Army, New Whiteland, KIA on May 3, 2006. The other 12 were killed in Vietnam. They include: Jerry Dean Adams, U.S. Army, Franklin, KIA on Feb. 18, 1968; Richard Patrick Blanton, U.S.M.C., Greenwood, KIA on Apr. 30, 1969; James Eugene Brewer, U.S.M.C., Edinburgh, KIA on Dec. 8, 1968; William John Bryant, U.S. Army, Nineveh, KIA on Aug. 18, 1967; Ronald Warren Duckett, U.S. Army, Trafalgar, KIA on Feb. 23, 1966; Larry Ray Glover, U.S. Army, New Whiteland, KIA on Oct. 7, 1969; William James Karas, U.S. Army, Greenwood, KIA on Jul. 31, 1969; Randy Cois Moore, U.S. Army, Trafalgar, KIA on Feb. 23, 1968; Robert Stephen Raines, U.S. Army, Greenwood, KIA on Dec. 2, 1969; Larry James Rigney, U.S. Army, Greenwood, KIA on May 19, 1970; Robert Wayne Velding, U.S. Army, Greenwood, KIA on Jan. 11, 1972; and Jimmie Keith Williams, U.S.M.C., Franklin, KIA on Dec. 8, 1968. Five of these veterans were from Greenwood, 3 Franklin, 2 Edinburgh, 2 New Whiteland, 2 Trafalgar, and 1 from Nineveh. Information concerning these soldiers was assembled from various military records, Dept. of Defense information and other on-line sources. A local business has stepped forward to provide the cost of the bricks and the wall that will be used for the KIA’s concerning this project. If anyone has any other information concerning a member of the military who was killed in action during his or her service to our nation, please contact: VFW Post 5864 Commander Steve Milbourn at [email protected] or 317-525-7291. Milbourn also remarked that he was researching all military men and women who served in World War I, World War II and the Korean War who may have been killed in action during the time of their war. Milbourn also stated that “Our Post will also be seeking out those individuals from Johnson County or a member of one of the service organizations who have been awarded a Purple Heart while serving in the military. We believe that those individuals who were wounded during any combat action should also be sought out and recognized for their efforts. We will be looking to place those folks in another specific area so that they can be easily recognized.” Finally, the last area the Post will have available for veterans who are deceased will be called “In Memoriam”. That area is for any veteran who is deceased. Single bricks in one of three colors are $100 each. The size of these bricks is 4 inches x 8 inches. The double-size brick is 8 inches x 8 inches and costs $175. The brick order forms are on the Post’s web-site, greenwoodvfw.com or available at the Post, 333 S. Washington St., from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Chloe is named Buddy Poppy Child of the Year

VFW National Headquarters has named Chloe as this year's Buddy Poppy Child. Chloe is seven years old and lives in the Kansas house with her mother, Brandy; father, Bobby; and two brothers, Caleb and Chase. This Fall she will be starting the second grade and her favorite subjects in school are writing and math. When she grows up, Chloe wants to be a veterinarian.

She loves being a part of Girl Scouts, cheerleading, and playing softball with her friends. "We do lots of fun things at the National Home. I am thankful for living there because we have a nice house and I have made lots of friends to play with" says Chloe. Chloe's father Bobby is in the Army National Guard and has done tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Later this year he will be going to Kuwait.

"My mom says living at the National Home will make things much easier for us while he is gone. There will be State Days and lots of fun things to do until my daddy comes home." _____________________________________

Walgreens to provide annual flu shots at VFW

All VA-enrolled veterans can receive annual flu shots at no cost at Greenwood VFW Post 5864 on Saturday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. While this immunization program is limited to just VA patients, Walgreens can provide flu shots to most VFW members and their families through other coverage programs, such as TRICARE, Medicare and most insurances. Simply present a Veterans Identification Card and a photo ID, at the VFW to receive the vaccination. In addition, after the Walgreens pharmacist administers the vaccine Walgreens will transmit that info securely to the VA where it becomes part of the patient’s medical record. VA is committed to keeping Veteran patients healthy, and during this flu season, vaccination is the best way to prevent the spread of flu. No matter where you live, visit your local VA clinic or stop by the VFW on Oct. 20 to get a free flu shot.

Greenwood VFW gaming and pull-tab rules

As a reminder to those individuals who play Bingo and / or purchase gaming tickets or pull-tabs at the VFW, the following rules are in effect: All Pull-Tabs or other gaming tickets which are deemed to be winners by the VFW, must be cashed in by the close of business on the day the sale was made, otherwise the ticket will become null and void. No gaming tickets are to leave the VFW’s building under any circumstances. Pull-Tabs have Serial Numbers and the VFW is required to keep a record for the Indiana Gaming Commission and therefore the VFW has the date each set of Pull-Tabs is sold. Bingo players must be 18 years old or older to play or purchase any Bingo tickets or Pull-Tabs. These rules have been in effect for several years. The Post wanted to reiterate them. If there are any questions, please call VFW Post 5864 at 317-888-2488. Also, if your winning ticket is over $250, you must print your name on the ticket, sign the ticket and place your date of birth on the ticket. This is an Indiana Gaming Commission rule.
