Leadership Roles at Home

Each new school year brings opportunities for academic growth and growth in all areas of development. Although children must be knowledgeable when they graduate, they must also be healthy, engaged, responsible, and caring people.

One of the best ways to help your child realize his or her worth and leadership potential is to provide an opportunity to lead. Most Leader in Me Schools offer student leadership roles as a way to teach:

• Responsibility

• Leadership

• Contribution

Leadership roles can also be used at home. To begin:

1. Talk with your child about the leadership role he or she might be interested in at home.

2. Discuss why he or she is interested in the role. Ask what leadership qualities your child has that will help. Ask how he or she will handle homework or other commitments with this new-role responsibility.

3. Together, discuss, write, and sign the paper detailing the leadership behavior and expectations of the role.

Give your child a week or so to adjust and then discuss how it’s going. This may open a conversation on how to handle things that are too easy or too difficult. Express appreciation and celebrate success!

are using on their devices. Parents need to know what websites and apps are kid- appropriate, kid-friendly or not for kids. There are apps where, on the surface, they are popular and harmless but in reality, they are just backdoors for inappropriate people chatting with your child. If you are on Facebook, then you may have seen the Sarasota County Sheriff put out their 21 apps to watch for in order to keep your child safe on their device. Luckily many other local police departments including the Collier County Sheriff’s office shared this information on their Facebook page. The more parents that question the apps on their child’s device the safer our children will be. Please take a minute to look over the picture below and take another minute to check if any of these apps are on your child’s device. Have a talk with them and let them know what can happen with some of these apps. Although they may be mad at first, hopefully they will understand that you are just trying to keep them safe.

My child got a device over the holidays, what should I watch out for?

This is a question that many parents are asking right now. In this age of technology, it is a very logical question to ask. Our VME students are taught how to be a good digital citizen during technology class. We, as teachers and parents, hope that they take what they learn in school and apply it to everyday life. As parents you still need to watch and question where your child is going on the internet and what apps they

Many parents have questions about the Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) for third, fourth, and fifth grade. There are resources which you can access online to learn more about the assessments, as well as help your child prepare.

The FSA website, http://www.fsassessments.org , has a section just for Students and Families. If you click on that heading, there are many helpful links. The site contains answers to frequently asked questions and also contains practice tests. These tests are meant to help students become familiar with the format and types of questions which will appear on their state assessments, and are NOT meant to be a review of the subject-area content. All of this year’s FSA assessments for 3rd-5th grade will be paper-based tests.

The specific dates for your child’s assessments will be provided when they become available. If you have questions about the FSA website or the assessments, please contact me and I would be happy to help.

During the months of January and February, we will be visiting each classroom K-5 to talk to students about their emotions and how they can cope with big emotions such as: anger, sadness, frustration and worry. This is called Emotional Regulation. As we all know, regulating our emotions is a life skill that will assist students when faced with challenges throughout their educational careers and beyond. Some of the coping skills we hope students will take from this lesson are: deep breathing, counting to 10, using positive affirmations, identifying people they can talk to and identifying safe places they can go to calm down. Something you can do at home is talk with your child about different emotions and model for them how you calm yourself down. For example, when faced with frustrating seasonal traffic this time of year, talk with your child about how you are feeling in that moment and choose a strategy such as deep breathing to model patience.

Thanks,

Mr. Ruben and Mrs. Johnson, VME School Counselors

A Tale for a Tail @ The Humane Society

Tale for a Tail is a 1-hour reading program in which kids read to animals at the shelter. Children of all ages can participate on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm at the mail shelter. Please go to www.hsnaples.org/reading to get more information and sign up. It’s a great way to practice reading, lower stress levels and meet one of your WIGs (Wildly Important Goals).

Tips for Parents:

Celebrate Literacy Week

1. Model good reading habits by reading to or alongside your child; parents set the stage for children to become better readers.

2. Encourage your child to read new and challenging books, articles and magazines. 3. Establish a daily reading routine. 4. Encourage reading, writing and discussions among family members. 5. Be positive when talking with your child about their reading ability and skills. 6. The love of reading begins at home. Create a “home library” for your family to access. 7. Limit TV viewing by controlling the amount of time spent watching television. 8. Play word games with your child. 9. Expose children to different kinds of books such as novels, biographies and informational content. Books about

our universe or various species are interesting and engaging for young learners. 10. Visit your local public library and help your child get a library card of their very own. 11. Take books in the car to read, rather than watching a DVD. 12. Create a “reading nook” in your home where your child can read. 13. Comment on new words your child hears on the radio or TV. 14. Play rhyming games during a car trip or at home. Children will enjoy learning their own version of rhymes you

learned as a child as well as how spelling effects rhyming. 15. Read the back of the cereal box at breakfast. 16. Select a “word of the day” to add to your child’s ever-growing vocabulary. 17. Write out words with opposite meanings on separate pieces of paper and have your child match the pairs

together (i.e. huge-tiny). 18. Make up a story by having each family member add a sentence to a story starter; expand on the individual

character traits, the setting of the story and exciting events/adventures. 19. Set aside additional reading time or add extra bedtime story time as a reward for good behavior. 20. Encourage your child to write a book about their day. 21. Help your child read the labels on different bottles and containers, including the shampoo and conditioner

bottles at bath time. 22. Play the “I Spy” game, looking for uppercase and lowercase letters. 23. While playing outside, encourage your child to create their name out of sticks, stones and other materials. 24. Help you child label artwork with his or her name and age. 25. Before a family dinner, encourage your child to create place settings with first and last names. 26. Turn on the subtitles when watching a movie. Even if your children are not reading age yet, they will learn that

what the characters are saying is associated with the text. As they get older, they will be able to match the words with the text.

27. Bake something – when following a recipe, children are not only practicing their reading skills, they are learning how to follow directions and work toward a goal.

28. Play a find-the-street-sign game while in the car. Encouraging your child to find words that start with various letters of the alphabet.

29. Read the description on the movie before starting it – getting a sneak peek into the storyline of the movie, make predictions and asking questions based on the description.

30. Make dessert time reading time. Read to your children while they enjoy their evening snack. Modeling your love for reading is one very important trait you can share with your children.
