The Great American SmokeoutThe Great American Smokeout occurs annually on the third Thursday of November, this year on the 15th, and the intent of the event is to encourage and provide support to smokers to quit smoking . Hosted by the American Cancer Society, this event has been going strong for over 40 years and has grown to include communities and businesses to work alongside healthcare providers to encourage individuals to live a healthier lifestyle by quitting smoking, starting with one day with the hope that the one day will turn into two, then a week, month, a year, and then the rest of their longer lives . The event not only offers support, but education on the different options that will help someone quit what is a very addictive and life-threatening habit .

This event was borne out of several events in the 1970s, beginning with a challenge presented by Arthur P . Mullaney at an event in Randolph, MA . Mr . Mullaney’s challenge was for smokers to quit for one day and donate to a high school scholarship fund, the money that they would have spent on their cigarettes . The first Don’t Smoke Day (also referred to in this context as D-Day) was organized in Minnesota by Lynn R . Smith, the editor of the Monticello Times, in 1974 . On November 18, 1976, in what was the first official “Smokeout”, the American Cancer Society’s California Division was able to get one million people to quit smoking for one day . It was taken nationwide the following year and since then, American culture and society has changed the place of smoking within it and where once there was it was glamorized and there was a choice for the smoking or non-smoking section in restaurants or hotel rooms, there is now the harsh reality of an unhealthy habit and only non-smoking options increasingly available across the nation . This event, movement really, has spawned changes in state and national laws and local ordinances and sparked lawsuits against tobacco companies alleging the withholding of knowledge from the public of just how dangerous smoking really was .

This year more and more resources are available for both smokers and their loved ones to help quit and provide support tools to enable them to remain smoke-free and gives tips to their support system to provide positive reinforcement to help them on their journey . The movement has also included smokeless tobacco as over the years it has been found that it is no safer than smoking a cigarette, cigar or pipe and can lead to different kinds of cancer and other physical ailments . For more information, check out https://www .cancer .org/healthy/stay-away-from-tobacco/great-american-smokeout .html or contact your healthcare provider . It not easy, but it is possible .

Mother Goose ParadeThe Mother Goose Parade is one of the longest-running parades in the country, the largest of its kind west of the Mississippi River and the largest in San Diego County . This year, the parade will be kicking off for the 72nd time at 1:00 pm the Sunday before Thanksgiving (as always), November 18th, in Downtown El Cajon .

Every year, thousands of spectators flock to the streets of El Cajon to watch what hundreds of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds have worked all year to put together . More than one hundred participants span a truly wondrous variety of floats, marching bands, equestrian groups, drill units, fun characters, balloons, musical performers, special guests and so much more coming from all over the country . As always, Santa Claus will be there and, after the parade makes its way down Main Street, there will be a tree lighting at Main and Magnolia . There is something for everyone to enjoy .

Spectators will want to get there early to get a good spot to view this annual tradition .

Model RailroadingArticle Authors: AKA Group

Did you know that November is National Model Railroad Month? Model railroading, as it is known in the United States and Canada, has been a fixture upon the world since the 1840s a few decades after the first trains were built and put into use around 1804 in Britain during the Industrial Revolution . Since their inception, trains have fascinated people, and recreating them on a smaller scale for children and adults alike to enjoy has become an industry in-and-of-itself . The earliest models were called “carpet railways” with electric models coming into play in the early twentieth century with the advent and evolutions of electricity . Toy trains, powered manually and then later with batteries and electricity have covered many a child’s floor giving them infinite hours of enjoyment . For countless adults, it has become a hobby that ranges from collecting model railroad train cars and sets of varying scales to creating or recreating whole landscape scenes complete with towns, landmarks, nature, animals, other vehicles and people . The model trains and all of their accoutrements have evolved from “crude” copies to truly accurate detailed representations of real-life .

At its most basic set-up, a model railroad train set can be found arranged in a circle or oval around the base of a Christmas tree during the holidays or on the living room or child’s bedroom floor . At its largest, most detailed and infinitely more elaborate set-up, a model railroad train set is one among many other sets that are exhibited as part of one or more landscapes in someone’s backyard, at a show of some kind or in an actual museum . San Diego hosts two such museums; the San Diego Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park and the Old Town Model Railroad Depot in Old Town . Both of these locations offer visitors the chance to see model trains of various scales and gauges set up to represent different regions, towns, landscapes and even time-periods . This past summer, the San Diego Garden Railway Society created and manned a truly magnificent display in the garden show portion of the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar . There are even model railroad train sets that are ridable on a smaller scale, such as the train that runs around a small track in Balboa Park near the San Diego Zoo or Rohr Park in Bonita or ridable trains that do not need a track at some of the local shopping malls; some railroad enthusiasts even have such models that they have set up to ride in their own back yards .

As mentioned, model railroads come in all kinds of sizes . These are referred to in terms of scales and gauges . The scale of a train is the proportion of its size to the original that it represents . The gauge is the measured distance between the rails on the train tracks . The most popular scale is the HO at a scale of 1:87 measuring 1 .97 inches tall and 3 .94 to 11 .81 inches long and these are typically what go around the tree at Christmas and run around the large landscape sets . The G scale at 1:24 is popular for set-ups in the backyard and those that are ridden are usual at a scale of 1:8 to 1:4 . The typical size for toy trains is O scale at 1:48 and the smallest scale is the T scale at 1:450 . In terms of gauges, the gauge for the HO is 0 .65 inches compared to 0 .118 inches for

the T scale and the 1:8 scale measures at 7 .25 inches . These models come with straight and curved tracks to be attached together to set out their route . Typically, electric or battery operated train sets come with tracks in which the rails are made of metal to carry the current and the “ties” that hold them together are made of plastic (while on real train tracks the ties are typically made of wood and the rails made of steel) . Toy train sets typically have plastic tracks, though

GIVES BACK!

some have tracks that are made completely of wood and look more like narrow roadways than the tradition tracks, like Thomas the Train sets . There are even train sets that are made out of Lego bricks .

Toy train sets can be found in the toy section of a department store and they have their own section in toy stores and hobby stores such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby . However, true model railroad enthusiasts would search out their wares at specialty hobby shops or, in the age of the internet, through online hobby shops or dealers and even the manufacturers themselves such as Lionel or Bachmann . One of the last train hobby shops around can be found in La Mesa; Reed’s Hobby Shop can also be found online and advertises that they “sell model trains almost exclusively” . These businesses offer the train sets in the different scales and everything that an enthusiast would want to recreate a railroad route, the landscape around it and the towns it runs through, including pieces that reflect certain time periods in history .

Train sets, no matter their scale, typically reflect the trains one would find travelling through the country taking travelers to places or cargo to their destinations . Some of them recreate well-known real-life locomotives and train cars, while others are representations of fictional trains such as the Hogwarts Express or carry a theme such as a set honoring the branches of the American military . What’s more, a certain stationery chain offers train ornaments annually representing real trains throughout history . While it is not the most prevalent hobby out there, model railroading is a lucrative business as, especially the larger-scale train cars, can easily run a buyer a couple hundred dollars apiece and an electric model set can easily sell for the same or more, depending on the scale . Some trains even have the ability to emit steam and have the locomotive and/or the cars light up . Collecting themed cars is as popular as collecting whole sets and represent different musicians, well-known fictional characters, movie themes, candies and even food brands .

Model railroading, both viewing and putting sets and scenes together, can be nostalgic, evoking the days of old, watching the train run next to or through one’s home town or along the highway on a road trip, or even memories of one’s childhood, playing with train set or setting one up to run around the Christmas tree . It can be a fun experience seeing how creative model railroad enthusiasts can get recreating scenes or setting up new ones with their imaginations . Visiting one of our local museums can be a great way to get the kids out of the house, or show out-of-town visitors something that they might not have where they come from . These museums may also offer seasonal exhibits that reflect the holidays or certain time of year or specialty exhibits reflecting a certain theme or city .
