County Veterans AffairsFor information on all benets that may be due you
or your dependents and to obtain current local fees and
eligibility requirements, contact the county Veterans

Free Fishing LicensesDisabled veterans are eligible for a free shing license
if they meet certain criteria.They must be a Pennsylvania resident who is dis-
abled as the result of an armed conict or war injury
consisting of a loss of, or loss of use of one or more
limbs, total blindness or certied by the U.S. Veterans
Administration as being 100 percent disabled.
Eligible veterans can obtain more information about thefree shing licenses at the county treasurer’s ofce or thePennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, P.O. Box 67000,Harrisburg, PA 17106, or by calling (717) 705-7800.
Applicants should have their VA certication, d ischarge papers and proof of wartime service.
Physicians certicate of disability is not acceptable.
Free Hunting Licenses
Disabled veterans are eligible for a free hunting licenseif they meet certain criteria.
They must be a Pennsylvania resident who is dis-
abled as the result of an armed conict or war injury
consisting of a loss of, or loss of use of one or more
limbs or certied by the U.S. Veterans Administration
as being 100 percent disabled.
Eligible veterans can obtain more information about
the free hunting license at the county treasurer’s of-fice or the Pennsylvania Game Commission, 2001Elmerton Ave., Harrisburg, PA 17110, or by calling(717) 787-4250. Applicants should have their phy-sicians certificate, discharge papers and proof of wartime service.
Guaranteed Antlerless Deer License
Disabled veterans who are Pennsylvania residents canobtain an antlerless deer license even if a county hasallocated all of its licenses.
The fee for the license is the same as the fee for aregular or military antlerless deer license. The difference
here is that disabled veterans are guaranteed a license.Contact your county treasurer’s office for more
information.

Veterans EmergencyAssistance
Veterans, their widows, infantsor dependents are provided upto three months of temporary,emergency nancial assistance. Theaid must be used for food, clothing,fuel or shelter. To be eligible,honorably discharged veterans musthave served in the U.S. ArmedForces during established war
service dates or during hostile reor terrorist attack in peacetime asdetermined by the state Departmentof Military and Veterans Affairs.Upon the recent death of a veteran,the veteran’s surviving spouse,children or parents may be eligiblefor assistance if the deceasedveteran qualied prior to death andif the surv ivors meet dependenteligibility requirements.For information, call

Real Estate TaxExemption
Honorably discharged veteranswho are residents of Pennsylvaniaand are certied by the U.S.Department of Veterans Affairs as
being 100 percent disabled froma wartime service are eligiblefor exemption from real estatetaxes on a principal dwelling. TheState Veterans Commission also
must determine the need for theexemption. If the veteran dies,the exemption can pass onto thesurviving spouse if he or she hasnot remarried.For information, call

Blind Veterans PensionHonorably discharged veterans
are eligible for a Blind VeteransPension of $150 a month. Theveteran must have been a residentof Pennsylvania at the time of
entering the Armed Forces and
while performing service dutiessuffered an injury or incurred adisease which resulted in blindness.The blindness is described ashaving vision at 3/60 or 10/200 or less.For information, call (800) 54-PA-VET.
Paralyzed VeteransPension
Honorably discharged veteransare eligible for a Paralyzed VeteransPension of $150 a month. Theveteran must have been a residentof Pennsylvania at the time of entering the armed forces. Veteransqualify if they are residents of the state now and if they sufferedan injury or disease resulting inthe loss of use of two or moreextremities during a war conict or hostilities during peacetime.For information, call

Birth and Death RecordsCertied copies of birth and
death certicates are issued toveterans and their dependentswithout cost by the Division of Vital Records, P.O. Box 1528,101 S. Mercer St., New Castle,PA 16103.For information, call (724) 656-3100.

Civil Service Preference
Honorably discharged veteransreceiving a passing score ona Pennsylvania Civil Serviceexamination are given an additional10 points on initial appointmentonly. Widows of veterans andspouses of disabled service-connected veterans also areextended the same preferentialrating.

State RetirementHonorably discharged veterans
employed by the state for threeyears or more may buy back their time spent in the U.S. ArmedForces (not to exceed ve years) for retirement purposes.

Educational GratuityPayments of educational
gratuities are given to children of honorably discharged veterans.To be eligible, veterans must becertied by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as having wartimeservice-connected disabilities
rated as totally or permanentlydisabling. Children of veteranswho died in service during a war or armed conict also are eligible.Children must be between 16 and23, a resident of Pennsylvania for a period of ve years immediately
preceeding the application date andattending a Pennsylvania school to

Grants for Veterans and
POW/MIA DependentsQualied veterans of the U.S.Armed Forces are eligible for stategrants while they are full-time
undergraduate students. Veteransmust comply with Pennsylvania’sresidency requirements and other requirements of the PennsylvaniaHigher Education AssistanceAgency.
Dependent children of membersor former members of the U.S.
Armed Forces who served on activeduty af ter Jan. 31, 1955, who areor have been listed as missing inaction or prisoners of war also areeligible for state grants.For information, call PHEAA (800)692-7392.
Persian Gulf VeteransBonus Program
Eligible current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces,the reserve or the Pennsylvania
National Guard, or their
beneciaries may receive a one-time benet of $75 for each monthof active service in the rst PersianGulf War, up to $525. An additional
$5,000 benet is available for thosewho were a prisoner of war or diedwhile on active service.Veterans must have:
Served on active duty inthe Persian Gulf Theater of Operations from Aug 2, 1990 toAugust. 31, 1991
Received the Southwest AsiaService Medal for the same periodBeen a legal resident of Pennsylvania during the time of active duty in the Persian Gulf Theater of OperationsBeen honorably discharged, if not currently on active duty

Parking Placard for Disabled Veterans
Disabled veterans may receivefree parking placards for their vehicles which would allow themto park in spaces designatedfor handicapped persons.
