Veterans EmergencyAssistance

Veterans, their widows, infantsor dependents are provided upto three months of temporary,emergency nancial assistance. Theaid must be used for food, clothing,fuel or shelter. To be eligible,honorably discharged veterans musthave served in the U.S. ArmedForces during established war 

service dates or during hostile reor terrorist attack in peacetime asdetermined by the state Departmentof Military and Veterans Affairs.Upon the recent death of a veteran,the veteran’s surviving spouse,children or parents may be eligiblefor assistance if the deceasedveteran qualied prior to death andif the surv ivors meet dependenteligibility requirements.For information, call

Real Estate TaxExemption

Honorably discharged veteranswho are residents of Pennsylvaniaand are certied by the U.S.Department of Veterans Affairs as

 being 100 percent disabled froma wartime service are eligiblefor exemption from real estatetaxes on a principal dwelling. TheState Veterans Commission also

must determine the need for theexemption. If the veteran dies,the exemption can pass onto thesurviving spouse if he or she hasnot remarried.For information, call

Blind Veterans PensionHonorably discharged veterans

are eligible for a Blind VeteransPension of $150 a month. Theveteran must have been a residentof Pennsylvania at the time of 

entering the Armed Forces and

while performing service dutiessuffered an injury or incurred adisease which resulted in blindness.The blindness is described ashaving vision at 3/60 or 10/200 or less.For information, call (800) 54-PA-VET.

Paralyzed VeteransPension

Honorably discharged veteransare eligible for a Paralyzed VeteransPension of $150 a month. Theveteran must have been a residentof Pennsylvania at the time of entering the armed forces. Veteransqualify if they are residents of the state now and if they sufferedan injury or disease resulting inthe loss of use of two or moreextremities during a war conict or hostilities during peacetime.For information, call

Honorably discharged veteransreceiving a passing score ona Pennsylvania Civil Serviceexamination are given an additional10 points on initial appointmentonly. Widows of veterans andspouses of disabled service-connected veterans also areextended the same preferentialrating.

Educational GratuityPayments of educational

rated as totally or permanentlydisabling. Children of veteranswho died in service during a war or armed conict also are eligible.Children must be between 16 and23, a resident of Pennsylvania for a period of ve years immediately

 preceeding the application date andattending a Pennsylvania school to

Grants for Veterans and

POW/MIA DependentsQualied veterans of the U.S.Armed Forces are eligible for stategrants while they are full-time

undergraduate students. Veteransmust comply with Pennsylvania’sresidency requirements and other requirements of the PennsylvaniaHigher Education AssistanceAgency.

Dependent children of membersor former members of the U.S.

Armed Forces who served on activeduty af ter Jan. 31, 1955, who areor have been listed as missing inaction or prisoners of war also areeligible for state grants.For information, call PHEAA (800)692-7392.

Persian Gulf VeteransBonus Program

Eligible current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces,the reserve or the Pennsylvania

 National Guard, or their 

 beneciaries may receive a one-time benet of $75 for each monthof active service in the rst PersianGulf War, up to $525. An additional

$5,000 benet is available for thosewho were a prisoner of war or diedwhile on active service.Veterans must have:

Served on active duty inthe Persian Gulf Theater of Operations from Aug 2, 1990 toAugust. 31, 1991
