At United Bicycle Institute, learning bicycle mechanics is fun – serious fun – and every UBI instructor understands that when learning is fun, it’s effective. We also pay close attention to safety, reliability and industry standards – because, as fun as bikes are, smiles don’t adjust derailleurs properly – good mechanics do.

UBI instructors draws upon a diverse array of industry experience to offer a unique perspective on the course materials – whether it’s operating a busy service department, working the trenches of the World Cup race circuit, or helping develop innovative new equipment with some of the bike industry’s premier brands.

During class, every lesson builds an understanding for how each system on a bicycle works before showing how to service it. This combination of learning the why and how, along with significant hands-on learning time, allows students to hone their problem solving skills and become well-rounded mechanics.

You can’t miss the infectious enthusiasm that’s an integral part of the UBI experience. It’s this energy that helps us connect with a wide variety of students and learning styles, and consistently earns rave reviews from graduates.

UBI is licensed by the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission as a private career school and is also approved for most VA-funded occupational education opportunities.

School FacilitiesUBI courses are offered at our two state-of-the-art Oregon campuses: our original campus in the beautiful mountain town of Ashland, and our uniquely urban facility in Portland.

UBI Mechanic Certification

UBI is the bike industry’s most respected training institute. In fact, there are more UBI graduates working in the cycling industry than from any other national mechanics school. We’re proud

of this record, and continue to expand and evolve our curriculum to reflect the industry’s

ever-changing technological landscape.

Our two types of certification programs are recognized and respected by professionals at all levels in the cycling industry:

Certificate of CompletionWe award a Certificate of Completion to all students who attend every class session and successfully complete all required coursework. This certificate is available for every course we offer.

Certified Bicycle Technician ProgramFor those seeking employment in the bicycle industry, or for experienced mechanics wanting advanced certification, we offer our Certified Bicycle Technician program. This certificate verifies that the student has demonstrated their proficiency in a specific discipline by passing a rigorous testing procedure, and surpassing industry-recognized standards.

The Certified Bicycle Technician Program is offered for our Professional Repair and Shop Operation course and both of the Advanced Certification Seminars.

What To Expect:

Developed in conjunction with DT Swiss, a leading manufacturer of wheel building components, this Advanced Seminar offers experienced mechanics with prior wheel building experience a detailed understanding of the dynamics of the bicycle wheel. The course also provides a great deal more information to students who have taken a Professional Repair and Shop Operation course and want to build on that experience.

The primary goal of the course is to give the student a foundation to become a master wheel builder through a combination of understanding the complex structure of the bicycle wheel, and hands-on practice. As part of the seminar, students will receive a 74 page manual complete with illustrations and step-by-step instructions for all the procedures demonstrated throughout the seminar.

Grading is based on a set of wheels built by the student that are evaluated to exacting tolerances, in addition to a written exam based on the theory discussed in class. Students who successfully complete all course requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion. Those who complete all course requirements and receive a passing score on both the written examination and their wheels will also earn the UBI/DT Swiss Certified Wheel Builder certificate.

Students have the opportunity to purchase the wheels they build at a significant discount, though this is not required. Options to customize the wheel are available including wheel size, spoke type and disc or non-disc hubs.

UBI Certified Suspension TechnicianWednesday, Thursday and FridayIdeal for:

Career-Oriented Mechanics

Experienced Mechanics Seeking Certification

Graduates of a Professional Repair and Shop Operation Course

What To Expect:

With suspension systems evolving and technology trickling down to ever-more affordable levels, demand for suspension technicians is high. Shops that can overhaul and repair their customers’ suspension systems have a distinct advantage over their competitors. Mechanics with suspension skills will find themselves more attractive to potential employers.

Our three-day suspension seminar exposes students to current suspension systems, as well as prepares them to service most other systems they come across at the shop. Through the three day course, suspension theory will be demystified, and students will become intimately familiar with the workings of latest suspension designs.

While suspension is a theory-heavy topic, the seminar is balanced with plenty of practical information and hands-on time. During the course students will overhaul five forks and two rear shocks from at least three major manufacturers. As part of the seminar, students will receive a 117 page manual complete with illustrations, and step-by-step instructions for all the

procedures demonstrated throughout the seminar.

Students who successfully complete all course requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion. Students who complete all course requirements and receive a passing score on the written suspension examination receive the UBI Certified Suspension Technician certificate.

Frame Building and Welding

CoursesUnited Bicycle Institute’s frame building school

offers students the opportunity to learn the craft in a classroom setting from some of the

finest frame builders in the country.

UBI first began offering frame building courses in 1991, and since that time over 3000 students

have graduated from our frame courses. Many alumni have gone on to successfully

launch their own frame building businesses, while others simply enjoy riding their new

custom built frames recreationally.

Our curriculum, which has evolved over three decades through the experience of some of the world’s highest caliber builders, allows even beginners to design and build a custom steel or titanium frame in just two weeks. At UBI, you won’t just watch someone else build your frame – you’ll do all the work yourself under the tutelage of our expert instructors using top-level tools and fixtures.

Designed for:

First Time Frame Builders

Career-Oriented Students

Enthusiasts Desiring to Build Their Own Frame

What To Expect:

All UBI frame building courses are taught by renowned master frame builders, and are designed for enthusiasts who want the satisfaction of riding a frame they built themselves, and for students who aspire to become professional frame builders. There are no prerequisites, or prior experience required to succeed.

Choose from our three frame building courses: Brazed Steel, TIG Welded Steel, and TIG Welded Titanium. In each course, students will build a high-quality mountain, road, commuter, cyclocross, touring/randonée, BMX, fat bike, or trials frame that they get to keep at the end of their two-week session.

All materials required to build a top-tier custom frame are included in the tuition price, though certain options, such as slider dropouts or oversized head-tubes, require a small upcharge. Every student is provided with the opportunity to install a full complement of braze-ons and, if building a

lugged frame, students are provided high quality investment-cast Cromoly lugs.

Students who successfully complete any of UBI’s frame building courses will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Brazed Steel Frame Building10 daysOur Brazed Steel Frame Building course is ideal for avid cyclists, shop mechanics and managers, or aspiring professional frame builders. Because both techniques are cov-ered in class, students can choose between the classic aesthetic of lugged construction or fillet brazed construction which allows for more design creativity.

Frame building is a craft that requires focus and dedication. While the process challenges students, even those with basic mechanical aptitude and no previous building experience finish class with a frame they’ll be proud of. Generally, every step of the construction is executed by the student with their newfound skills. We also have our expert instructors close by when additional help is required. Students who successfully complete this course will leave with a high quality custom steel bicycle frame and a Certificate of Completion.

TIG Welded Steel Frame Building10 daysOur TIG Welded Steel Frame Building course offers the same instruction in frame design and construction as our Brazed Steel course, but uses TIG welding as the joining method. Specially designed practice welding sessions early in the course prepare students to TIG weld a quality steel frame.

TIG welding skills can be more difficult to acquire than brazing, so we recommend that students interested in this course possess above-average mechanical skill and hand-eye coordination. Good close-up vision is also important, especially in the high-contrast light conditions characteristic of the TIG welding process. Students who successfully complete this course will leave with a high quality custom steel bicycle frame and a Certificate of Completion.

TIG Welded Titanium Frame Building10 daysOur TIG Welded Titanium Frame Building course offers all that the TIG Welded Steel Frame Building course encompasses, but uses titanium instead of steel for tubing materials. Special emphasis is placed on proper cleaning and purging of titanium tubes, titanium machining problems and solutions, as well as proper titanium welding techniques.

Specially-designed practice welding sessions early in the course prepare the student to weld his or her own titanium frame. As with our TIG Welded Steel Frame Building course, good close-up vision is important, especially in high-contrast light conditions. Students who successfully complete this class will leave with a high quality custom titanium bicycle frame and a Certificate of Completion.

TIG Welding Seminar2 daysThe TIG Welding Seminar introduces TIG welding to prospec-tive frame builders, or builders with only brazing experience. This weekend course is typically scheduled immediately following a Brazed Steel Frame Building course to allow students to experience both types of joining. Though not required, students can also benefit from this seminar in preparation for TIG welding frame building courses.

The seminar provides a detailed look at equipment selection and use, with emphasis placed on producing strong, cosmetically-appealing weld beads. As with all UBI classes, plenty of hands-on practice is combined with lectures and demonstrations to give students an appreciation for accurate tube mitering and best practices for joining bicycle tubes. Students who successfully complete the seminar will receive a Certificate of Completion.
