November 11, 2012 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time ADULT FORMATION OPPORTUNITY During this Year of Faith, one of the learning opportunities available for all St. Mary adults will be weekly sessions on Exploring the Sunday Readings. These sessions will take place on Tuesday evenings, be- ginning at 5:45 pm in the music room of St. Mary School. This faith formation opportunity will take place while St. Mary’s Religious Educa- tion Program is in session, so all parents of children in REP, as well as any interested parishioner, is invited to participate. Our first session will be on Tuesday, November 13. Materials will be available at the first session. Please contact Sue Matousek at 847-223-0010 or sma- [email protected] with any questions. Hope to see you there! Veteran’s Day is a cele- bration to honor Amer- ica's veterans for their patriotism, love of coun- try, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Pray for our veterans on Veteran’s Day. Immediate Hurricane Sandy Relief Faith Church in Grayslake has rented a large trailer to load with needs for the New Jersey area. They will drive to the east coast on Friday, November 16. They are partnering with a church in the New Jersey area that will receive the goods for distribution. St. Mary Par- ish has been invited to join in this effort. If you are able, please con- sider donating any of the following items to Faith Church. Hand sanitizer baby wipes paper towels paper napkins trash bags antibacterial wipes granola bars energy and protein bars gatorade/powerade cereal bars work gloves shovels heavy and light duty brooms storage bins meals in a can any canned goods peanut butter cereal shelf stable milk diapers water cleaning supplies sandwich, quart, gallon ZIP lock bags grab and go snacks (i.e. pretzels, crackers, etc.) All items are to be brought directly to Faith Church on the corner of Atkinson Rd. and Brae Loch in Grayslake any- time Monday, November 5–Thursday, November 16. St. Mary Parish is not collecting at this time. Monetary Donations for Victims of Hurricane Sandy Those who escaped the storm and want to help can do so in several ways. You can make a donation to Catholic Charities USA's 2012 Disaster Fund (800-919-9338) to assist domestic relief efforts. For those countries most affected in the Caribbean region — Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and the Bahamas — a donation to Catholic Relief Services (https://secure.crs.org/site/Donation or 877-435-7277) will help as the agency and its partners in the Caribbean assess the damage and provide relief supplies. The CRS Newswire has an initial description of the impact and needs in Cuba and Haiti. Another way you can help is to donate blood if you are able. Sandy caused the cancellation of about 350 American Red Cross blood drives and more cancellations are expected due to con- tinued power outages and transportation issues. To locate a blood drive in your area, contact our local Red Cross or area hospitals. Your prayers can also help. Here are some suggested scripture readings that will help you reflect on the suffering of the storm's victims and focus on the hope of eternal life in Christ. Psalm 91, Wisdom 3:1-3, John 11:25-26, John 14:2-6, Romans 6:3- 5, 9-11, Revelation 12:4 God of all mercies, God of all consolation, comfort us in our afflictions that we might comfort those who are in trouble with the same consolation we have received. The month of November is a traditional time for visiting graces, as is the anniversary of death. The following ser-vice is adapted from Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers, ©copyright 1988, United states Catholic Conference, Inc. When all have gathered at the grave, they make the sign of the cross. The leader begins: Praise be to God our Father, who raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Blessed be God forever. All respond: Blessed be God for ever. One or more of the following Scripture texts may be read: We know that if our earthly dwelling a tent, should be destroyed, we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with hands, eternal in heaven.

2 Corinthians 5:1

I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our lord.

Romans 8:38-39 After a time of silence, all join in prayers of intercession, which should include intercessions for the deceased as well as family members, for the world, for community, and for those who suffer illness and pain.

All then join in reciting the Lord’s Prayer. Then the leader says: Lord God, whose days are without end and whose mercies beyond counting, keep us mindful that life is short and the hour of death unknown. Let your Spirit guide our days on earth in the ways of holiness and justice, that we may serve you in union with the whole Church, sure in faith, strong in hope, perfected in love. And when our earthly journey is ended, lead us rejoicing into your kingdom, where you live for ever and ever. R/. Amen. V/. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, R/. And let perpetual light shine upon them. V/. May they rest in peace. R/. Amen. V/. May their souls and the souls of all the

faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

R/. Amen. All present share a sign of peace.

Visiting a Grave in November

Remembering Our Dead in November Our parish Book of the Dead has been placed on a table of remembrance near the votive candles. The names of all persons who have been buried from St. Mary Parish in the last year have been inscribed in the Book of the Dead. Everyone is invited to enter into the Book of the Dead the names of deceased persons they would like included in our prayers for the month. Everyone is also invited to place on the table of remembrance a photograph or other memento of deceased loved ones. Please put your name and contact information on the item. The table will remain in place until November 30th, after which you are welcome to reclaim your memento.

Christmas Gifts for Families in Need St. Mary will once again participate in providing Christmas presents to families in need at our sharing parish, Holy Fam-ily in Waukegan. Instead of a Giving Tree with tags on it, we will have a table in the narthex on the week-end of No-vember 10 & 11 after all masses. Holy Family “family” wish lists will be

available for you to choose from. A St. Mary’s family can purchase gifts on their own or go in with another family. Individual gifts will not be an option. Each St. Mary family who wishes to participate will pur-chase gifts for an entire family. All gifts will be delivered to Holy Fam-ily on Sunday, December 2.

Congratualtions Gary Kupsak

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

Today’s Gospel story about “the widow’s mite” calls us to reflect on how we are personally and collectively helping to

grow the Kingdom of God. Too often stewardship gets equated solely with money. It is that, but much more. Saying that stew-ardship also includes time and talent is not simply some ploy to give a smoke screen for the dollars and cents aspect. If you are thinking “I don’t need to hear another money talk,” I ask that you

give me 5 minutes and hear me out.

One cannot truly have a meaningful discussion of steward-ship unless you begin with the fundamental mindset that is its founda-tion and motivation: Stewardship is primarily an exercise in gratitude. To whom? First and foremost, to our God and Father. Secondly, to our extended family gathered as the parish of St. Mary of the Annun-ciation...and beyond.

We are all infected by the American notion that we “pull our-selves up by our own bootstraps.” We know how hard we have had to work in order to obtain whatever professional and material success we may enjoy. It has taken us untold hours of toil to get our college de-gree(s) or to climb the rungs of the corporate food chain or to build our own business. As a result, we often fall into the trap of believing that we have earned everything we have and everything we have achieved.

Wrong!!!! Who among us “earned” the privilege of living in 21st century America? And exactly how did we acquire the innate physical talents and mental aptitudes that enable us to excel at our chosen professions and vocations? Where have we earned the privi-lege of even having life itself? The fact of the matter is that we have-n’t!! All that we have begins as a gift from God. Oh, sure, we may have added our own efforts on top of these gifts, but all of these efforts would amount to nothing were it not for what we have been given to start with.

Stewardship says that out of gratitude we owe back to God and His People a share of the blessings we have received. Our time is not just our own – it has been given to us to build up the community. Our talents are not our own – they have been given to us to enrich the lives of others. Our treasure is not meant to be ours alone – it is to be shared for the needs of our extended Christian family and those who have little.

Yet we withhold our time because we say we have more important things to do. (More important than serving the Gospel?!?) We allow our insecurities and lethargy to prevent us from offering our talents to the community. And we allow our stinginess and fear of “rainy days” to restrain our giving, especially in these troubled eco-nomic times. Stewardship first calls us to possess a spirit of thanks and gratitude for what we have, and to have trust in God’s providence. When we gratefully recognize that we have received in abundance, we will be moved to act generously ourselves.

Newspaper Recycling Bin Raises Money for St. Mary School The big yellow and green bin at the back of the school parking lot is a drop-off location for news-paper, mail, magazines, catalogs and other scrap paper. Many St. Mary families recycle there every week already. Joining our recycling effort pays great benefits for our school.

PAPER DRIVE This November we are having a Paper & Newspaper Recycling Drive! This is important because we earn money for every 2000 pounds of paper collected. We usually collect 1-2 tons every month. Please help us reach our goal of 4 tons this November! Thank you from the St. Mary School Green Team, students and staff

Advent Mass & Reflection for Women

Monday, December 3, 2012 6:00 PM

ALL WOMEN ARE INVITED TO ATTEND.... Annual Advent Mass for Women Monday, December 3rd 6:00 pm

Come join us for a special Mass for women to help put your hearts and minds in the right place this busy Advent sea-son. The Mass is right before a wonderful presentation by Fr. Presta on our Blessed Mother Mary, which begins at 7:00 pm. Please make time this Advent to attend this special Mass, the talk by Fr. Presta or treat yourself to both. Your families and

friends will all benefit by having a more peaceful and spiritual woman in their midst this holiday season.

Next week I would like to address the subject of money. While we pour the majority of our waking hours into earning it, saving it, investing it, and spending it, some regard it as a taboo to discuss this fundamental aspect of life in the context of our communal exis-tence as the People of God. We need to get over this aversion. In-deed, Jesus frequently addressed the topic of wealth in his teaching. If you wish to contact me, just leave a note in the Parish Office or send an email to [email protected].

“The Year of Faith” by

Dr. Michael Barber To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Second

Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI has announced a Year of Faith to help Catholics revitalize their faith, to rediscover the splendor and beauty of the faith, and to inspire us to commit to the New Evangeliza-tion. In this talk, Dr. Michael Barber explains how the Catechism and Sacred Scripture can reignite the fire of our faith.

Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program

and offer new material.
