It's incredible just how quickly juvenile lizards grow. However, rapid growth requires hard core nutritional support. Without it, young lizards very quickly develop serious and in many cases, irreversible health issues. The most common and devastating of these health issues is the dreaded MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease).

Normal vs Abnormal?

Vetafarm's own "Beardie" the bearded dragon has struck a pose here to demonstrate what a healthy dragon should look like. What a show off!

If you are in the market for, or already have a growing lizard, the video below is an absolute must see!

Essential nutritional

support products as featured in

the clip!

DIGIMARC

Download the Digimarc app and scan the image to watch our YouTube video on MBD in reptiles.

Normal: A straight spine and tail, with no visual defects.

Abnormal: Twists, kinks or bends in the spine or legs are not normal. Even slight

bends need to be investigated ASAP!

Normal: Strong, fluid movement of all four limbs. This means back legs too! A healthy bearded dragon should be

able to completely lift their body off the ground to walk normally.

Abnormal: Dragging body along the ground with poor movement/strength,

particularly in hind legs.

Normal: Firm, straight mandible. Top and bottom jaws should close

flush without overhang.

Abnormal: Softness of mandible (jaw), over or under bites.

Abnormal: Tremors and muscle twitches. Particularly when the lizard is attempting to move or

support bodyweight.

A simple discussion between two Australian vets has blossomed into what could well be a revolution in aquatic animal health. Dr Rob Jones, aptly referred to as the Aquarium Vet, has an impressive resume. From consulting for leading public and commercial aquariums, to shark rescue operations and managing his very own online aquarium health training program, Rob is a driven and passionate individual. When Dr Rob met Dr Tony Gestier, Vetafarm’s director, veterinarian, pharmacist and developer of over 400 specialised health products for exotic animals – the discussion quickly centralised on Rob’s knowledge of problems in aquatic animal health and Tony’s ability to design from scratch unique health solutions.

FRIENDS OF FISHVetafarm team up with The Aquarium Vet to solve underwater health issues.

Vetafarm has since developed and released 5 new health products for elasmobranches (sharks and rays) and penguins, which are currently in use at major public aquariums in Australia, Thailand and Vietnam. In addition, Vetafarm is in the developing stages of another dozen products for release into various avenues of aquaculture. These include a safer anaesthetic for use in surgical procedures conducted on fish with serious health problems to a new range of vet formulated fish foods.

With our research and development team constantly planning and trialling new products, there are sure to be many more exciting developments to come – stay tuned friends of fish!

Vetafarm makes a whole range of products. Can you find what animals we make them for?

The short-beaked echidna is a very strange critter. Classified as a mammal, like the platypus, both are exclusive members to the monotremes (egg-laying mammals) club.

The short-beaked echidna has a few other distinctive qualities that make it stand out from the crowd, such as a beak like a bird and a pouch like a kangaroo. It also has spines that help it in prickly situations.

The love trainEchidna's have a weird mating ritual. When breeding season comes around males line up nose to tail behind a female, forming a train of up to a dozen suitors.

Trench WarfareThese trains can last for more than a month, and when the female is finally ready to mate, the males compete for her. First they dig a trench and then attempt to push each other out, the last one standing gets the mating honours.

Echidna ChowRecently with the help of one famous Sydney zoo, our veterinarians and their wildlife nutritionists teamed up and formulated an echidna feed for these interesting insectivores.

Vetafarm hopes to have this product available to all Australian zoos and wildlife sanctuaries/carers, as a complete diet, to aid and rehabilitate insectivorous mammals.

THE Elusive Echidna

long and pl-ant-iful tongues

Female echidnas have special glands in their pouches called milk patches which secrete milk. The puggle licks the milk to feed.

The short-beaked echidna has the largest prefrontal cortex relative to body size of any mammal. This part of the brain in humans is thought to be used for planning and analytical behaviour.

Short-beaked echidnas have long, sticky tongues that they use to feed on ants, worms and other insects.

A baby echidna is called a puggle, when it hatches from the egg it is smaller than a jelly bean.

SPIKES: The echidna's body is covered with long hollow spines, except for their faces, under area and legs.

Snouts: Slender snouts, tiny mouths and toothless jaws.

SMARTS: Very large brain (for its body size), with exceptional memory retention and the largest prefrontal cortex of any mammal.

All aboard!

I choo, choo,

Hair: Fur between the spines provides insulation.

Claws: Large sharp claws excellent for digging.

Sensors: The echidna has an electroreceptive snout, this makes them sensitive to electric signals.

Instead of teeth echidnas use the hard pads on the roof of their mouth and back of their tongue to break down food.

Parasite Profile:

They're everywhere and they're dangerous!

Bio: The roundworm is the most common intestinal parasite in captive birds and remains a regular cause of severe illness and death.

The ability of the female roundworm to produce and lay eggs is astounding; any infected bird will pass large numbers of roundworm eggs in its droppings. This makes the cage environment a minefield of roundworm infection and reinfection.

Frequented Locations:

If it has a gut, it will get worms!

Due to the life cycle of roundworms and the foraging behaviour of birds, these nasty parasites are a serious risk to all types of birds –No exceptions!

AKA: Worms, Nematodes, Ascarids

Ascaridia sppsReal (Scientific) Name:

WORMS!

Pet Risk: HIGH –Roundworm are extremely common in aviaries. They reproduce rapidly and may infect all species and ages of bird. Left untreated, roundworms are a regular cause of death in an aviary, particularly among native Australian birds.

Your vet can check for roundworm eggs in the droppings of your birds, however a regular prevention programme is the way to go.

Counter Measures: Worms must be controlled. The best treatment is prevention. A bird carrying a heavy burden of roundworm is in real danger - controlling the intake of worm eggs is the safest option.

Worm ALL your caged and aviary birds every 3 months (4 times a year) to keep the worm egg numbers to a minimum. Complete eradication of roundworms is practically impossible, go for good control.

Important for bird breeders! Ensure that one of the worming treatments happens just before breeding time and another after young birds have been weaned.

If your birds have an outbreak of worm related illness you need to act quickly. Sick birds should be taken into a hospital box and given Spark liquid directly (this helps with stress and dehydration).

Then treat with Wormout Gel, as per directions. Wormout Gel is safe and effective on all worms in all birds from a zebra finch to a scarlet macaw.

Once the crisis is over make sure you institute a regular Wormout Gel programme.

Weapon of Choice: The roundworm uses a brutal approach to its war on your bird. It simply multiplies and grows in such numbers that, apart from drawing all the nutrients from the gut, they form a writhing mass of worms inside the intestine that eventually kill the bird!

Roundworm eggs are ingested while the

birds forage about on the bottom of the cage.

Once hatched the worm larvae goes on a journey

through the tissues of the bird where they rapidly find the gut.

There they suck up nutrients until they become mature adults and grow into another

The first being a GMP registered pharmaceutical plant, from which powders, injectable medications and liquids are manufactured. The majority of Vetafarm’s research and development also takes place in this facility. The second site is a new purpose built factory designed specifically to produce the world’s best food products from some of Australia’s best and freshest ingredients. This new plant also contains an engineering workshop, a dedicated print shop and a dispatch department.

VETAFARM: THE SUCCESS STORY 25 years in the making!

I n T h e B eg i n n i n g:Flash back to 1990, Nelson Mandela is freed from prison and parachute pants explode into pop fashion on the reverberating thighs of MC Hammer. At the same time two Australian veterinarians were fighting an uphill battle in exotic animal vet practice. There was simply no specific health solutions available for these different species of animals. Things were tough.

From this dilemma, the concept of Vetafarm was born. The company goal was the development of veterinary formulated health solutions for those animals the mainstream market had left behind.

Heavy Metal Poisoning

The toxic effects seen vary according to the type and amount of metal ingested and can include:

* Weakness

* Ataxia (seeming unbalanced and ‘drunk’)

* Regurgitation or vomiting

* Lethargy and just being ‘off’

* Haematuria (blood present in the urine component of their droppings)

* Paralysis and seizures

* Crop stasis

Dr James Haberfield

in Parrots What types of metal can cause problems? As a general rule all metals have the potential to cause problems if ingested, generally through their absorption into the blood stream. Lead and zinc are the two most common metals that we see ingested.

Where does the metal they eat come from? Most commonly parrots ingest metal from chewing on their cage or items within their cage. The wire on many cages is covered in a zinc coating and many of the bell toys that are sold also contain different types of metal. We also see parrots that are free-ranging around the house chew on their owner's jewellery as well as furniture such as curtain rails. Lead paint ingestion is not as common as it used to be, however we do still see this from time to time.

What types of birds are affected? All birds have the potential to suffer from heavy metal poisoning.

How is heavy metal poisoning diagnosed? There are a few different methods of diagnosing heavy metal poisoning. The two most common are radiographs (x-rays) and testing your parrot’s blood lead and zinc levels.

Is there treatment available?Absolutely! The treatment needed will depend greatly on how severely poisoned and ill your parrot is. Common treatments include chelation therapy injections to neutralize the toxic effects of the metal, fluid therapy, crop feeding and on occasion surgical or endoscopic removal of the metallic item.

What should I do if I think my bird has ingested a piece of metal? The signs of metal poisoning can come on either gradually or very quickly. If you are suspicious of your bird ingesting any metal then we advise getting them seen as early as possible by an avian veterinarian.

Parrots are inquisitive animals that love to chew on almost anything. One of the problems we see regularly is when they accidently ingest items that they were never supposed to eat!

We see parrots eat all kinds of things ranging from material fibres from toys in their cage right through to earrings that the owner was wearing!

Scream, Pluck, Destroy! 4 simple steps that could prevent those behavioural problems!

Some pet birds develop behavioural problems due to the lack of one or more crucial daily activities. Partaking in these very basic, but crucial behaviours is often the difference between feather plucking and your bird being happy as Larry!

Providing a range of foods in varied areas of your parrot’s enclosure, along with native branches, fruits and food puzzles is a great way to encourage foraging behaviour. Vetafarm’s Nutriblend Minis are the ideal foraging food source, being small enough to hide in and around the enclosure and completely balanced for optimum health. Our Deli-Stix are also a great healthy treat and specifically made to encourage natural foraging behaviour.

Sleep – Another part of a bird’s behaviour that needs to be considered is sleep! If you don't sleep right it is usually reflected in your attitude - the same applies to animals. Obviously this does not require heavy involvement from the bird’s owner, although you must provide an area for your bird that is dark, quiet, and feels safe for the bird.

In order to keep your pet birds as happy as possible these four activities are key! Neglecting any one of these behaviours for long periods of time can lead to a confused, frustrated and/or destructive bird.

Larry

Foraging – Around 60% of a wild bird's time awake will be spent foraging. Foraging is essentially the natural act of moving over large areas searching for food. This is a very important activity and can be as simple as opening nuts, breaking into pods and extracting seeds or flying great distances to obtain a specific type of fruit.

In a pet bird's situation the food is typically offered in a dish, the bird can then eat the food having to expend precisely zero effort in close to no time at all. Now what does your parrot do for the rest of the day?

Grooming – Birds take great care in grooming as they require healthy feathers for flight and survival. Any bird in good health will naturally groom or preen themselves. There is nothing specific that needs to be provided for birds to be able to perform this action. It is believed by some parrot behaviour specialists that neglect of social contact or time spent foraging can lead to ‘over grooming’ or the early stages of feather plucking.

Socialising – If you have a pet parrot, socialising them is very important. Parrots are flock animals and therefore have a natural desire for flock socialisation; that’s exactly why parrots make such great pets! Single birds with nobody to socialise with may go to extreme lengths to get attention; this can include screaming, destructive behaviour and possibly plucking or picking. The more time spent with your birds the better, and this is critical when dealing with particularly intelligent species such as eclectus parrots, macaws, etc. If you doubt you will have time to spend 1 hour a day with your parrot, the better option may be a pair of canaries or budgerigars!

1) Soak the gelatine leaves in cold water for 3-5 minutes. Squeeze slightly to remove all the excess liquid and place into a small bowl. Pour 1/2 cup of boiling water in with the gelatine and mix until dissolved.

2) Put your Deli-Treats into a large mixing bowl and pour the liquid on top. The liquid will be hot so take care not to burn yourself and assist children if they are helping.

3) With a spoon mix everything together well. (You can use your hands to ensure everything is evenly coated).

4) Place the sheet of wax paper on top of your cooking tray and lay out the cutters. Spoon the Deli-Treats mixture into the cookie cutters, fill all the way to the top, using the back of your spoon to press the mixture down and ensure that the mixture is packed tightly, try to make the top as smooth as possible.

6) Allow the shapes to dry. For the best results let them dry overnight. When dry, the bikkies should slide right out of the cookie cutters.

Tips:

- If the bikkies don't hold together, you might need to let them set for a longer time or add more gelatine.

- You can leave a few bikkies outside for wild birds to eat.

Together this dynamic duo bring to you the thrilling show that is Feathered Friends.
