The SACE enables students to include a significant amount
of VET in their studies
VET Study
as a part of
your SACE
Up to 150 SACE credits at Stage 1 and/or
Stage 2 for successfully completed VET
Completing VET study while at school
VET units may count towards the student’s Australian Tertiary
Admissions Rank (ATAR)
If a VET subject is not available at GGHS, students can enrol at a
TAFE or other Registered Training Organisation (RTO) — in some
cases, even a neighbouring school (One+ / NEVO)

School-based apprenticeships (SBA)
and traineeships
Involves students completing an apprenticeship or traineeship part
time, whilst still completing the SACE.
Generally highly valued by employers and are a valid pathway for
students to transition from school to employment, further training or
higher education.
New opportunities for employers/industry to design pathways with schools
Students commence vocational career early & spend majority of Year 12
in the workplace AS WELL AS completing their SACE
Still in pilot stage – potential to bridge gaps between schools, industry and
families, promoting greater outcomes for students planning on
transitioning directly from school to employment

APPLYING FOR VET 2020
PROCESS
1. Students research their options NEVO booklet
NEVO website (course specifics)
TAFE website *short courses for students (VETiS)
Cross-Campus *two forms
External providers *details provided to HG teachers
2. Collect (HG) Expression of Interest form Form requires basic details of course applying for
Student and parent email required
Student and parent signatures required
Return to VET office in the Hub by 15th August
Each course application requires new form
3. Receive an emailed copy of VET Application booklet
Considers
Career goals
Personal attributes
Statements from HG teacher or SSL
Work experience (work placement)
Will be accompanied with an interview date and time
Compulsory attendance
Parents may attend if available
4. Attend interview with completed application
Discuss application
Rigorous processes within VET
Ability to be successful
5. Wait for emailed result (yes or no)
Sent to student and parent, Cc’ed HG teacher (where applicable)
EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS (now)
Research and collect information from HG, Hub, VET office
Make an appointment for questions not answered in the materials
Check emails & DayMap regularly (& reply where applicable)
Complete booklet & attend interview (prepared to discuss application)

For government funding, students need to be 16
First course studied at GGHS is subsidized by school (in most cases)
Work Experience is helpful
Year 11 – look at Cert I, II sometimes III
Year 12 – mostly Cert III
SBA and traineeships can be undertaken as well (different process)
Students can express interest to organise a time to speak with Apprenticeship Officer
