TODAY-After 24 years of frustratingly slow progress-often accompanied by ridicule and scorn-intrepid researchers in many countries are achieving some success in creating still another remarkable elec-tromagnetic system. This one involves communication with the so-called dead.

The current development of SPIRICOM by Metascience Foundation researchers rnay be ranked, in thedecades ahead, with the many innovative efforts that culminated in the telegraph, telephone, radio andphonograph. The term SPIRICOM (from spirit communication device) may someday even be a part ofeveryday language.

The accompanying recording consists of conversations with persons very much alive in other dimensions, aswell as reports on research by those pictured here.

A PHOTO HISTORY OFMAN'S COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS

Man's recorded history on this planet stretchesback about 8,000 years. But only in the last 150years or so has man been communicating by meansof electro-magnetic systems

This means that in only 2 percent of man's timeon earth he has moved from the carrier pigeon tocommunications satellites millions of miles out inspace. We don't often take time to think about therate at which the develcpment of communicationssystems has been accelerating.

Just consider the picture as it unfolds here.

In 1558 Giovanni Battistadella Porta proposed a mes-sage-sending device that wouldutilize magnetism. Man hadknown about magnetism sinceancient times, but it was almost300 years before the develop-ment of electro-magnets madedella Porta's dream a realitv.

In 1838 Samuel F.B. Morsedemonstrated that clicks froman etrectromagnet could carry amessage along a wire. FromWashington to Baltirnore hesent the message, "What hathGod wrought? "

ByBell

187 6 Alexander Grahamdemonstrated that wires

could carry not only Morse'sdots and dashes, but the tonesof the human voice as well"

In 1877 Thomas Edison useda needle to capture the vibra-tions of a telephone mouth-piece, first on paraffin paper, then on tinfoil, and then onwax. He had invented the fore-runner of today's magneticaudio and video tape recordingsystems.

By 1896 Guglielmo Marconiwas demonstrating that the dotsand dashes of telegraphy couldbe transmitted without a wireover long distances-evenacross the Atlantic Ocean !

It did not take long for LeeDeForest to prove that the''wireless' ' could carry thehuman voice, too. By 1907those with the proper receiverseould hear singerover-the air- -waves. Then Edwin Armstrong'sdevelopment of regenerativecircuits in l9l2 and the super-heterodyne radio in 1918 quick-ly advanced the state of the art.

Broadcasting of pictureswould not be far behind. J.L.Baird 'of Scotland is creditedwith demonstrating the firstcomplete television system in1926, when he transmittedsound and halftone pictures. InAmerica, Ernst Alexanderson,Edgar Love, and VladimirZworykin helped refine the newcommunications device.

The next step, of course, wascolor television, first broadcastfrom the CBS laboratories byPeter Goldmark in 1940. Nowmore than 95 percent of thehomes in American have televi-sion, about half of them in color.

In 1969 when man first land-ed on the moon, it was naturalthat millions of people wouldexpect to participate by meansof radio and TV. And they did,via live telecast from themoon's surface.

Of course man's explorationof space did not stop with thelanding on the moon. Photosand telemetric data have beentransmitted 1,200,000,000 milesfrom unmanned spacecrafts. The communications capabil-ities of the inhabitants of"spaceship earth" seem limit-less indeed.

An even more exciting breakthrough in communicationis occurring RIGHT NOW.

Significance of the SPIRICOM BreakthroughIt is not surprising that the 19Bf SPIRICOM communications with

the oodead'o are as crude as - and much more uncertain than - werethe initial message exchanges via telegraph, telephone, wireless telegraphand radio. The technical problems still to be solved are infinitelygreater.

Nevertheless, the accompanying recording establishes beyondreasonable doubt the reality of the continuity of life. The printedtnaterials supply the basis for understanding how and why the indi-vidual mind, memory banks, personality and soul survive death of thephysical body. As a whole, the packet provides full confirmation of thefollowing statements:

. For the first time in Mankind's history, it has been proven incontest-ably that death is merely a door to continuing life.

o ft is now certain that individual consciousness-what we often referto as personality-continues to exist and function in a disease-free andpain-free environment.

o The needless and destructive fear of death can be removed, as well as

the deep concern over the passing of a loved one.

o The taboo our culture has imposed on the whole subject of death canalso be removed.

o Something else that can be jettisoned is the accumulated non-pro-ductiue religious dogma that has ruined countless lives over thecenturies to the extent that it imposed burdens of fear and guilt.

o The knowledge that the mind and soul transcend death of the physicalbody will help Man begin to understand that it is his own thoughts andemotions that largely determine whether he will experience sickness,or enjoy vibrant physical and mental heath in this life.

o SPIRICOM developments can bring about changes in both scienceand religion, to the improvement of both.

o Each individual can begin to realize that he or she is a permanentinhabitant of an apparently limitless cosmos, and not just a soul-lessmaze-running rat or corn-pecking pigeon as proclaimed by present-day behavioristic psychologists.

o In the decades or centuries ahead when SPIRICOM is perfected tothe point where it can be used to communicate with the mental andcausal planes, mortal man will have access to the accumulated wisdomof the ages on any subject.

That is quite an imposing list, isn't it-to result from the develop-ment of SPIRICOM. How many events in the history of Man have hhdmore profound implications for the future of the human race?
