BEAUTY

Although this product seems good value for money, it does chip within 1-2 days. If you are someone who loves to change their nail colour often, then this varnish is perfect for you. This unique peach colour fits right in with all the pastels that are around at the moment. Perfect!

Barry M Nail Paint in Peach Melba, £2.99

****A little more expensive, but oh so worth it. This nail colour is stress-free to apply with a good size brush that keeps mess to a minimum. The coverage of this nail varnish is flawless and

it lasts a long time without chipping. This pastel purple looks beautiful on, a must buy for nail varnish lovers.

Revlon Nail Enamel in Charming, £6.49

*****

These fruity nail polishes come in two lovely colours and smell delicious, but there are some downfalls. Although they smell delectable, they chip very easily meaning you’d need a top coat, applying that will conceal the smell. This small problem does defeat the object of this product, but it is still a bargain!

Rimmel Lasting Finish Fruities Nail Polish in Strawberry Fizz and Apricot Punch, £2.99

***

NAIL VARNISH WINNER: Revlon Nail Enamel

The application of this product is great and it gives you a natural bronzed look without an overpowering colour. It has a slight shimmer within the

balls, so it highlights your face well. You can build up the colour meaning you can go as light or as dark as you like, without it looking too thick. It

lasts all day and is great value for money!

Collection 2000 Bronzing Pearls, £4.19

****

This product is ideal for everyday use. It gives your face a lovely glow and is easy to apply. This bronzer is compact so fits nicely into your make up bag, handy as you will need to reapply within the day as the colour does wear off a little. At less than £2 you can’t complain.

Natural Collection Suntint Bronzing Powder, £1.99

***

This bronzer is great for giving you a subtle daytime look but can also be built up to wear in the evening. It gives you a slight shimmer but

nothing too over powering, meaning it is perfect for looking healthy in the summer. It stays on all day and is affordable too, proof you do not need an

expensive bronzer to look glamorous!

Get the natural look

Moisturising is fundamental in achieving any look and should always be the first step. Without

moisture your skin may dry out and cause cracks in your make-up. Use a small amount of a lightweight moisturiser all over your face, then leave to sink in for a few moments.

A great primer is vital in every regime. A lot of people aren’t aware of how beneficial a primer can be, not only will it make your skin smoother for a more effective application of foundation but it also keeps your make-up looking perfect all day. Use Benefit’s porefessional balm, (£23.50) the silky texture is lightweight but provides brilliant coverage and is miraculous for oily skin. Put a small amount of the balm on the back of your hand and using a wedge sponge pat it all over your face. You can apply slightly more to problem areas like the t-zone where make-up tends to slide off. Blend the balm in to your skin with your fingers.

Let the primer absorb for a couple of minutes and then smooth over your foundation. Maybelline dream matte mousse (£7.69) comes in over ten shades so it’s virtually impossible not to find a match. Silicone polymers in the mousse also prevent caking and leave skin soft and natural.

The creamy texture glides on to skin and creates a flawless matte finish that feels weightless. It’s best to apply with a wedge sponge then blend with fingers.

Use Bare Minerals blush in ‘Giddy Pink’ and an angular blusher brush that isn’t

too fluffy. Tap any excess powder off the brush and sweep gently across the apple of your cheeks (smiling in a mirror will help to identify these) in an upward motion towards your ear. Dab powder over any excess blush to prevent looking too rosy.

Now, for the eyes. It’s equally as vital to use an eye primer to prevent your eye shadow from creasing little more than an hour after application. Using MAC prep & prime eye in the light shade (£12) dab a liner brush in the primer and apply on eye-lids like a shadow, from the inner of your eye outwards.

Beige and brown colours best complement the natural look, MUA’s heaven and earth palette contains 12 versatile earthy colours for just £4. Apply a golden brown shade across the entire lid, followed

by natural beige delicately across the brow bone; use a soft brush to blend.

Brown eyeliner pencils tend to look warmer and less harsh than black and intensifies the natural look. Try Buorjois eyeliner pencil (£4.99) in ‘Brun design,’ ensure it’s sharpened and apply slightly thicker at the outer corner of the eye.

Apply Rimmel’s new scandal eyes mascara (£6.99) its’ thick brush has more bristles for defining and finding lashes you never knew you had. Wiggle the brush through your eyelashes, the motion will separate lashes and create a more voluminous look, apply to bottom lashes too.

Finish your natural eye look with the revolutionary HD Brows palette (£19.95.) this amazing product will give you an effortlessly sleek brow to rival a professional styling in minutes. The kit is a little pricey but is long-lasting as the high pigmentation of the colours means you only need a small amount for each application. Using the angular brush provided gently (to avoid any harsh lines) sweep across your brow, from the corner of your eye outwards. Your brows won’t smudge throughout the day and will frame your face, transforming your entire look.

Finally, opt for neutral colours for the lip. Use No7’s moisture drench lipstick in ‘Golden rose,’ the coral pink shade will complete your classic natural look.

Summer has arrived and it’s a time we can fully embrace natural beauty. Sunkissed skin needs little enhancing so follow these simple steps to achieve an effortless naturally beautiful look.

SLIM DOWN FOR SUMMER

Does the thought of lying on the beach in your bikini fill you with dread? Do you want to be able to fit into that dress from last year? Here at Verve we understand that it is important to look and feel great during the summer months. We also realise how important it is to stay healthy and we have a simple regime to keep you active, radiant and happy with how you look.

The two key factors to maintaining a healthy diet are: eating the correct amount of calories for how active

you are and consuming a wide range of foods to ensure your body receives a suit-able balanced diet.

1. It is vital to eat a healthy amount of fruit and vegetables. It is recommended that we eat a minimum of five portions of different fruit and veg each day. This may sound difficult, but it is a lot easier than it seems. A glass of fruit juice can count as one portion, meaning that one glass of orange juice for breakfast will set you on the right path for the rest of your day.

2. Cut down your saturated fat intake. It is important to remember that you need fat in your diet to keep it balanced but it is just as imperative to know how much is enough. You will find saturated fat in cakes, biscuits, cream and butter as well as many other foods. So try to stick to the foods that include unsaturated fat, which are better for you. How about trying reduced fat spread instead of butter to make a step in the right direction.

3. Keep an eye how much sugar you have. A lot of people eat and drink more sugar than they think without even realising it. Food and drinks including alcohol can be high in sugar and are extremely high in calories; this has been shown to be partly responsible for weight gain. It is essential to cut down on cakes, biscuits, pastries and fizzy drinks that contain added sugar, rather than foods like fruit that contain natural sugars, which are still okay to drink.

4. Quench that thirst! It is recommended

that we drink around 1.2 litres of water a day, to stop our bodies from becoming dehydrated. Although if exercising more water will be needed.

5. Enjoy your first meal of the day, breakfast. People that say skipping breakfast helps you lose weight are far from the truth. Research shows us that people that have breakfast are more likely to control their weight. Wholemeal breakfasts with fruit are the most filling and nutritious.

Get active! This does not necessarily mean long hours at the gym. Look at your daily routine as an opportunity to get active. For example, walk instead of driving; get off the tube a stop earlier or offer to take

someone’s dog for a walk, that company may mean you walk a little further than you usually would.

If you are interested in something a little more intense, then join a class or the gym to push yourself that little bit further.

Looking to join the gym? Look out for the more individual, smaller gyms, as they will be cheaper than the chain companies.

Why not try Zumba? Classes run all over the country, and are fun, energetic and more importantly they are great for burning body fat, without you even realising. So grab some mates and find your nearest class. Burning calories whilst gossiping, what could be better?

HOW TO...Live Li fe On A

Bu dget1.

Budgets are boring. But most of the time budgets are neccessary. So here Verve has found the top three tips on how to live a good life, and stay money-savvy.

Check your salary, and how much you are getting after tax. This is where most people get confused with how much they earn, and how much they actually take home at the end of each month.

2.Work out you outgoings for each month. Including bills, food shopping and anything else you may have to pay out for. These will all affect the extra cash you have at the end of each month.

3.And finally enjoy yourself with what money you have left. If you love to shop then treat youself. If you like to socialise then have a catch up with your friends, and if you like to save, then put a bit of money away each month for something bigger!

It had always been desirable to Vicky to see the world, and take a year out from her studies. Finishing college

in July 2007, she knew that she desperately did not want to go straight into university. “Seeing the world has always attracted me, and even though I wanted to go to university, I wasn’t quite ready for going straight into the deep end. So I thought a gap year was the best plan.”

Having heard of a company called Gap, Vicky was interested to find out more information about ways she could travel, without sticking to the typical gap years that people normally take. So she decided to look around, and get more of an idea of what was available to her.

South Africa has become a popular tourist destination over the last few years, and even more popular with younger people wanting to gain life experience. “I had always wanted to visit South Africa, and having researched into it booking with a travel company was the best way of going about it. Also the best value for money.”

“I decided that I was going to go for six months, which was from January 2008 to July 2008, these were easily the best six months of my life.”

She went alone, in the hope of meeting some unforgettable people, and that is exactly what happened. “I have always liked being individual, and fending for myself, and this was the perfect opportunity to do just that. Everyone was in the same boat as me, and I just had to keep telling myself that. It is definitely very important to remember that you are not alone in this!”

“I still keep in contact with the people

I met in South Africa, which is amazing. Whilst taking part in these experiences, you really do make friends for life. It is lovely to hear what they have been getting up to since we met in South Africa. “

The difference in culture between the United Kingdom and South Africa is always going to be completely different, the same as when you visit any other country. “I just went with an open mind, I always knew that it was going to be totally different to home, but this is what excited me. The thought of living in a totally different country and culture is something that I would love to experience over and over again”, says Vicky.

Kids, animals, and friendly locals, Vicky was always made to feel welcome. “The kids instantly warmed to me, and the other workers, which made our job a hell of a lot easier. The orphans we were looking after enjoyed our company, and we enjoyed

theirs just as much.”So if you are looking to take part in a gap

year of a lifetime, then get looking. With so many about, you are sure to find the perfect one to suit you.

Eating route 66

“I’ve always loved road trips,” Drew says speaking of his

inspiration to drive route 66; “I find myself increasingly fascinated by the stories, local culture and landmarks of the American road.”

Symbolising both solitude and freedom of the American Heartland Route 66 is iconic for Americans and tourists worldwide. Though the original route no longer exists the notion still does and most of the route is driveable with interconnecting highways and back roads.

“I adore roadside attractions like the Cadillac Ranch (the same that inspired Springsteen) in Amarillo, Texas; a cluster of ten Cadillacs doing handstands. And the blue whale in Catoosa, Oklahoma; a giant smiling whale that used to serve as a swim dock, it’s cool but creepy because of the intense sense of desolation and abandonment that envelopes the place. I had seen many of these curiosities in photos but wanted to experience it for myself.”

A browse of the blog (http://eating-route-66.tumblr.com) reaffirms that there is indeed a vast amount of weird and wonderful kerb side architecture throughout the route. From giant dream catchers to derelict playgrounds there are peculiar findings aplenty.

“The entire trip is a curiosity. There are interesting things to see everywhere, even when there is nothing to see because it’s a vantage-point that most of us don’t even know exists any more. We’re used to the landscape whizzing by from the freeway. We’ve forgotten (or maybe we never knew it enough to miss it) that if you slow down and take the roads that lead through the Main Streets and Broadways of the little towns that dot Route 66, there is more

interesting food, friendlier people and way weirder tourist traps.”

Growing up in Kansas City and St Louis there was always a longing for Lori and Drew to take on Route 66 but it was a trip to the Petersen Automotive Museum that gave Drew the determination to make the trip sooner rather than later.

“I visited an exhibit called The Art of Cars, narrated by Pixar Cars director John Lasseter, though Cars isn’t my favourite Pixar film it’s depiction of the American South-west is breath-taking, it makes you want to jump in your car and drive to Arizona. Immediately after my visit I

decided I would drive Route 66 as soon as I had the opportunity.”

As they were planning to have a baby in the near future, Drew and Lori decided now was the time. They researched thoroughly and did a lot of reading, Drew says; “Understanding the history and culture makes for a more intimate experience on the road. We ensured we were well prepared with enough food and water, flashlights, chargers and camping gear incase we had to sleep outside.”

Drew committed to blogging the various eateries they found along the way, as he believed it would be of interest to his followers at lafoodie.com. A blog Drew started in 2008, LA Foodie is dedicated to showcasing the most delectable cuisine around LA, “LA Foodie is all about finding secret dives and shacks for

example, that burger place your brother’s friend told you about. Route 66 is replete with places like that.”

Starting their pilgrimage in Chicago on a frosty Christmas Eve, Drew and Lori were eager to tuck in to some authentic diner and drive-in food. “After two days of gas station sandwiches whilst driving to the start point, we were dying for some real Route 66 cuisine.”

And the Eating Route 66 blog embraces just that; the first food-based post features Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket, an eatery famous for serving up delicious fried chicken for nearly 75 years. Like a lot of diners along route 66, the Chicken Basket is proud of its’ modest history from the days when the nearby highway was so busy. In the late 1930s the Chicken Basket was a gas station lunch counter and ideal stopping place for those travelling to or from Chicago. The diner became popular when two women from the local farm approached the owner claiming to have a brilliant recipe for fried chicken; they said they would teach him how to make it if he bought their chickens from them. This kind of story is the case of a lot of the diners along the old highway’s roads.

Joe and Aggie’s Mexican-American Café in Holbrook, Arizona seems rather meek from the outset but they served up Drew’s favourite meal throughout the entire expedition. “I ordered a stuffed sopapilla; a thick dough shell crammed with beef and beans, smothered with chilli sauce and cheese. It’s safe to say I’ll be dreaming of it in years to come.” Serving the expected-yet-appetizing tacos, hamburgers and steaks, Joe and Aggie’s has also been serving locals and passers by for over 60 years when the nearby area was thriving.

“Even though I had read stories about

“THE TRIP IS A CURIOUSITY, THERE ARE INTERESTING THINGS TO SEE EVERYWHERE EVEN

WHEN THERE IS NOTHING TO SEE.”

When food writer Drew Hubbard and his wife, Lori chose to drive route 66 it wasn’t just to sightsee; Drew and Lori blogged their way across the Mother Road on a culinary adventure.

and seen photographs of many of the dying towns along Route 66, it can be heart-breaking to see them in person. The same goes for some of the Indian reservations that we drove through. For every great landmark along Route 66, there are 100 ramshackle, abandoned buildings.”

The desolate roadside charms are often part of the endearment with Route 66 pilgrims. Isolated streets resemble that of Big Fish and burnt out petrol stations will bring Marty McFly to mind. Sightings are a muse for many; John Steinbeck wrote about it and The Rolling Stones sang about it.

“I felt like I was shooting a movie in the coolest locations in America. One of my favourite spots was Delgadillo’s Sno Cap Inn, a crazy burger joint in Seligman, Arizona. I’ve since returned but it was closed both times so I’ve never eaten there but it’s strange and interesting.”

Lodging along Route 66 seems to vary from the straightforward not-so-nice motels to the quirky and downright bizarre. When in Gallup, New Mexico Drew and Lori stayed at the 75-year-old iconic El Rancho Hotel, which also accommodated Hollywood stars John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn when they were filming in the area. The Extravagantly decorated lobby, draped with decorations and a colossal Christmas tree was enough to persuade them to book the presidential suite for the night.

“The El Rancho’s lobby at Christmastime was stunning with its giant Christmas tree and deep, varnished wood floors, railings, stairs, and furniture. I would highly recommend a visit.”

When asked if he could do it all over whether he’d do anything differently Drew said, “I’d visit different places as there is still so much to see.”

Despite the incredible memories, after hours on end of driving and living out of a car it would be a relief for anyone to reach the end of the journey.

“We got to break through finish-line tape, and friends were waiting for us with bottles of champagne. We were exhausted but the sense of accomplishment, especially with the thorough documentation of the blog, was huge.”

Now, Drew and Lori have their first little boy, Walter so road trips are off the cards for a while but Drew isn’t finished exploring America’s roads just yet. “I’m hopeful our son will enjoy these kind of trips as much as we do, we can’t wait until he’s old enough to appreciate a route 66 trip too.”

Confessions of a lazy beauty addict

From primers and plumpers to brighteners and balms, you name it,

I own it. I am utterly captivated by every new product pledging to hydrate, boost and soothe. As a result of this, my family and friends take great joy in preparing for a night out in my bedroom, with my sister once telling me: “I love getting ready in your bedroom, it’s like being in Superdrug.”

Despite my shameless obsession with all things beauty I can’t resist a shortcut if it means 20 minutes more in bed. Like most girls I love big hair, however I simply don’t have the time or patience to sit or uncomfortably sleep in rollers. My answer to this is quite simple, I wash and blow-dry my hair as normal then I’ll throw my head forward and back (much like Willow Smith whipping her hair back and forth) then set with hairspray, instant volume.

The truth is brilliant products can do a lot for your hair. I openly admit that once I didn’t have my hair cut for over a year, despite this people would

often tell me how great my hair looked. I would bathe my hair in intensive conditioner, lather on the MorrocanOil before drying and rub wax into my shabby split ends. My reason for not booking in for a trim was more fear of leaving the salon distraught because the stylist got ‘scissor happy’, than lazy. But still I found a way to conceal the unfortunate state of my over-dyed, parched hair.

Given the option of waking up thirty minutes earlier than necessary and wash, drying and styling my hair, or sleeping in and dousing my hair in dry shampoo, it’s a given I’ll take the second option. My number one product, dry shampoo both camouflages the grease and creates volume, ideal when time is in short supply. Now you are familiar with my laziness regarding habitual haircuts and washes, you’d be correct to presume the same rules apply with hair colouring. Hair colouring is both costly and time-consuming and if I want to look fabulous whilst leaving six to eight weeks between hair appointments I have the perfect

product. It’s cheap, takes ten seconds and no-one will ever guess the secret; hair mascara. ‘What?’ I hear you say, ‘I haven’t used that since the 90s’. Well, hair mascara isn’t just for purple highlights at your best friends bouncy castle party. I simply run the wand over my visible roots, then it’s good to go, flawless root coverage in seconds.

Picture this; I’m sure you’ve been there. I’ve put on a great outfit; a simple white blouse with chic cropped black trousers. Then just as I’m about to leave the house I see it, the dreaded leg stubble. My train leaves in fifteen minutes, I don’t have time to jump in the shower and shave, so I wet the razor and run it over the visible part of my leg. Similarly I’ll paint the only two toes exposed through my peep-toe court shoes. When it comes to nails it’s always assumed a manicure means time, but for glossy polished looking nails I rub a little Vaseline into the cuticles. If I do have time to paint them, it’s still an inconvenience to wait for them to dry; I’ll leave them for two minutes then immerse

them in ice-cold water to dry them quick.

As a firm believer in life-changing products, I have faith that when you find that miraculous piece of make-up you can often minimise your daily routine. Before I discovered HD Brows I could spend the entire afternoon and several products attempting to make my eyes look how I wanted them to. I soon realised that shaping and colouring over my brows (not like the ‘Scouse Brow’ mind) changed and flattered my whole face. For days when I’m just popping out for ten minutes and don’t want to cover my face in foundation and powders, I simply shade in my brows and brush on some mascara, it really is enough to make me feel better and it only takes two minutes.

So for those days when you’d rather have time for a coffee than a shower, or you think you can’t wear those cropped jeans because of stubble, consider taking a beauty shortcut. If no one will notice the difference, why waste your time?

What is it? La Rosa is fantasyland of a caravan site home to eight unique vans built around the

theme of authentic gypsy life. Spread across 20 acres and bordered by serene woodland the site is low-impact and environmentally friendly, pathways and vans are filled with candles and fairy lights for cosiness and out of respect for the nearby wildlife.

W h e r e i s i t ? N e s t l e d i n t h e N o r t h Yo r k s h i r e M o o r s N a t i o n a l P a r k n e a r W h i t b y.

What’s the history? When she was a student Amanda Boorman was in need of some peace and quiet for reading and decided to lodge in a caravan with no electricity. It was then she had thought of the concept for a traveller inspired campsite, which opened its gates to the public in 2004 and became a pioneer of the ‘glamping’ trend.

Why is it cool? The central meeting point for evening entertainment is a circus style marquee, guests drink champagne under the stars whilst playing acoustic guitar around the roaring fire. The campsite has a limited number of visitors so it remains under crowded and laid-back at all times, they also don’t compromise on comfort, Trip Advisor reviewers also say their beds are the cosiest ever.

Who should visit? Anyone with a love for all things quirky, kitsch and bohemian. It’s not ideal for luxury lovers with a fear of being close to nature though as the facilities are very basic, think compost toilets, open-air baths and a converted barn for a shower. The campsite is perfect for unique hen weekends and parties as groups can book out the entire site.

How much will it set me back? Prices start from £24 per person per night that includes bedding, candles and firewood. An

evening meal is an additional £8 each. When can I visit? La Rosa is open from

May to September, weekends only. What is there to do in the area? A day

trip in to Whitby is essential; you can drive there within 20 minutes or board the authentic steam train. Jam-packed with shabby chic shops and retro cafés Whitby provides good old-fashioned seaside fun and recent press has branded it as cool and eccentric. Take a stroll down the cobbled streets and indulge in some fish and chips. Feeling energetic? Wander up the 199 steps to the cliff top graveyard where Count Dracula sucked blood. Besides Whitby you can take a walk through the woods to the local Inn, passing streams and bridges you will come to the Birch Hall Inn in Beckhole, the winner of the ‘Most Untouched Pub’ award. Also nearby is the village of Sandsend, its rugged beach makes it perfect for picnics on a sunny day. Neighbouring village Goathland is close, Heartbeat is filmed here and so is Hogwarts railway station from the Harry Potter films, impressive. TRAVEL

The Great Wall of China

Beijing on a BudgetAre you fed up of travelling to the same place each year, are you desperate to experience a different culture? Beijing could be the destination for you. With tasty food, welcoming locals, and attractive tourist hotspots, you will not want to miss out on this gem of a capital.

When you visit China for the first time you’ll be overwhelmed with how

different life is. Beijing’s airport was built to coincide with the Olympics in 2008, its’ vast architecture will have you in awe before you have set foot into the hustle and bustle of the city.

Beijing is a popular destination, not just for tourists but also for residents from other parts of China. The city offers great tourist attractions that stand proud in the history of China and attracts people of all ages.

In Beijing you will be surprised at how far your money will stretch. Visiting the small convenience stores you’ll find that cans of drink cost a mere 30 yen, just 30p; a lot cheaper than over here. Visit the local Chinese restaurants instead of the chain outlets and you will be able to keep the spending down. Food outlets such as McDonalds and the Hard Rock Cafe are more expensive than in England.

If you love to shop for a bargain, then Beijing is for you. With silk being a popular material, you can pick up high quality kimonos, ties and other silk goods for a good price. Markets in the area offer womenswear, menswear, handbags, jewellery and other goods; you can barter to get the price down. (TIP: never pay the first price they offer you as you will be able to get it down to a much more reasonable price).

Exciting attractions are abundant in Beijing. A tourist favourite is Tiananmen Square, a large city square in the centre of Beijing. It is the third largest in the world and has a significant place in Chinese history. It has been the site of many political events and also several student protests. So make sure your camera is fully charged, as you will definitely want to take a few

photographs here. Close to Tiananmen Square you will find

the Forbidden City, which was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty that has served as the home for the emperors for close to 500 years. In 1987, it was acknowledged as a World Heritage Site and is known as the biggest set of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.

Another attraction worth visiting is the breath-taking Summer Palace, also known by the Chinese as Gardens of Nurtured Harmony. Inside this beautiful imperial garden you will find palaces and other architectural structures. Within the Summer Palace you will come across the Long Corridor, which is 728 metres long and is notably ‘The Longest Corridor in the World’.

The Temple of Heaven encompasses a group of religious buildings in the southeastern part of central Beijing, well worth a visit. During the time of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Emperors would visit the Temple of Heaven to pray for good harvest. Nowadays the public are allowed to look around the beautifully painted

and sculptured buildings, and appreciate the effort that went in to creating these wonderful structures.

The most sought after tourist attraction throughout the whole of China is of course The Great Wall. Originally built to protect the Chinese Empire it has become a must see for tourists from all over the world. The steep nature of the wall makes it hard work to tackle, so why not see how far you can get before you need to take a seat.

Beijing’s weather varies greatly throughout the year. In December and January it can reach as low as -10 degrees but from May to September there are blue skies and warmer temperatures.

Visiting during the winter will allow you to witness the local’s celebrations of the Chinese New Year. It is celebrated by Chinese communities worldwide and consists of dragon dances, fireworks and big family gatherings. It will provide an unforgettable experience.

So book your holiday to Beijing now to experience a completely different culture and be blown away by the breathtaking sights and attractions that will remain memories for years to come.

• Flights to Beijing start from around £500, flying with either British Airways or Air China.

• Beijing uses the currency ‘Chinese Yuan’, so make sure you order your spending money in advance to be safe.

• You need a visa to enter China, and these take some time to be processed, so make sure you leave plenty of time to sort this out.

• Stay safe. Watch out for pick pockets at the popular tourist attractions. Make sure you keep your valuables safe!

• And have an amazing time!

Before you start searching for your perfect holiday you need to look at the best places to visit right now.

Travelling beyond the Eurozone is ideal; the pound is holding its own in Turkey and Egypt, if you want to explore a different culture Iceland and South Africa are currently good value for money. If you must travel within the Eurozone opt for upcoming places which haven’t quite experienced the tourism boom yet, such as Bulgaria and some villages in Croatia.

Flexibility is the key to securing a great deal. If you can book a few days prior to jetting off you can get a luxurious stay for less, booking eight to ten weeks before departure is ideal. If you can’t book very late, it’s best to book very early, up to 9 months ahead. It also helps to be easy going regarding when you travel; flights and hotels understandably cost less in May and June than during the school holidays in July and August. By taking your summer break in June you’ll still get warm weather but for a discounted price and without the competition for sun loungers. When booking your flights consider the departure times, night flights are often cheaper as are weekday flights.

Securing a bargain of a holiday can be time consuming, write down all of the travel agent and travel websites you can think of and compare deals. It can be tedious checking prices and looking at the same

information repeatedly but you will find various prices for the same hotel. Once you find your deal, bookmark the page and check back throughout the week, it is likely the price will fluctuate so you will need to be savvy on when to book, be vigilant though the price could increase.

It is now more important than ever that before making your reservation you ensure the company you’re booking with has ATOL consumer protection. This means if the company goes under you will get your money back, alternatively book on a credit (not debit) card which offers protection.

Turkey is the top choice for a budget break, last year 28 million tourists checked in compared with eight million in 2000. With over 5,000 miles of sparkling coastline, it’s scorching temperatures and friendly locals it’s not hard to see why Turkey has become a top 10 holiday destination.

Currency in Turkey is the lira; at the time Verve went to print 50TL is a mere £17 making dining, shopping and generally staying in Turkey exceptionally cheap.

Halcyon Days Hotel is approximately an hour transfer from Dalaman airport and is perfectly positioned in the lively town of Hisaronü and the beautifully appeasing beach of Olu Deniz. A seven-night stay including return flights departing from Gatwick on the 12th June 2012 costs

from £276 per person based on a bed and breakfast board, or if you want a room with a balcony £283. Halcyon Days has a large pool, sun terrace and garden area, they offer a variety of foods for breakfast as well as food available for purchase throughout the day. All rooms have a shower, toilet, air conditioning, TV and a telephone. June is a decent time to visit Turkey as peak season is just beginning, temperatures still reach a sizzling 26c but aren’t quite as unbearable as July or August.

Hisaronü is renowned for being a lively area; there are bars, restaurants and clubs aplenty, each competing for business with inexpensive offers. Many restaurants on the main strip will offer three course meals for around 18TL (£6.50) cocktails are always 2 for 1 and a pint of Effes, the traditional Turkish beer is typically around 3TL, just £1.

There are plenty of things to see and do in the surrounding areas of Hisaronü and getting around couldn’t be easier. Both locals and tourists make use of the Dolmus bus, for 1.5TL (0.50p) each way you can visit the harbour town of Fethiye and Olu Deniz.

The bustling strip of Hisaronü is overflowing with excursion companies with copious amounts of activities on offer. From boat trips to deep sea diving, there is something for everyone. Starting your holiday off with a trip to an authentic Turkish bath is a must; relax and rejuvenate your skin ready for some serious tanning.

Beach breakson a budgetThe rising cost of living and the tumbling pound has lead to annual summer holidays becoming

unaffordable for many but we’ve scoured the travel agents to find the best locations, deals and tips for you.

Most companies offer pick-up and drop-off from your hotel and a Turkish bath commonly costs £10 per person. A trip to Dalyan will take you through Turtle beach to glimpse a sight of the superb creatures and let you experience the mud baths whilst the jeep safari is an active day jam-packed with sightseeing and fun.

On a Tuesday hop on the Dolmus to Fethiye for its’ enormous weekly market, haggle with stallholders as you will always get a bargain. A lot of market stallholders prefer English money so it may be convenient to take both currencies with you.

Deemed one of the world’s finest beaches and the winner of numerous beach-related awards Olu Deniz is well-worth a visit for a tranquil day on the beach. Swim in the calm waters of the blue lagoon whilst watching paragliders land on the sand, or have a go yourself if you’re feeling fearless.

Many holidaymakers who visit Turkey tend to return year after year, its combination of authentic culture and modern tourism makes for a flawless budget break for all.

Bulgaria isn’t quite as established as Turkey yet but could be in a few years’ time. A scenic location, forested mountains frame the sun drenched beaches but further afield you’ll find stylish city centres and national parks aplenty. Bulgaria has it all; tourists just haven’t worked it out yet.

A seven-night stay at the Holiday Village Diplomat in Sofia, Bulgaria costs from £238 per person based on two people sharing a room on a bed and breakfast board. Return flights from Gatwick are included and depart on 12th June 2012. The hotel is in a serene area and is surrounded by lush green

landscapes ideal for a peaceful holiday but the city centre is just a 20-minute taxi ride away for more action packed days. The Holiday Village is an intimate place encompassing 10 semi-detached properties; it boasts a pool, tennis courts, fitness room, sauna, restaurant and Caribbean style bar. Temperatures are warm during June and can reach 24c but summer is also the wet season, short showers may impose on the 10 hours of daily sunshine.

The city of Sofia is compact and easy to get around on foot; it has developed quickly over the past few years and is vastly

becoming one of Europe’s cosmopolitan capitals. Trendy boutiques and five star hotels are cropping up however the sad sight of hard up pensioners and disabled beggars on the street is still visible.

The city is also home to a vast amount of museums and galleries; The National Museum of Military History and the National Art Gallery are amongst the finest for Bulgarian history and culture. Amongst the galleries, theatres and architecture Sofia is unexpectedly green with vast amounts of parkland within walking distance from the city centre.

Despite it’s upcoming status Sofia still has plenty of hidden gems to offer. Dream House is a fine vegetarian restaurant which is tricky to locate but well worth a visit. Look for the door on your left inside the

small shopping arcade and up the stairs you’ll find this treasure, the menu includes tofu, soup and stir-fries and on Sunday there’s an all you can eat buffet.

For shopping head to Central Hali Shopping Centre, this grand building was constructed in 1911 and encompasses three storeys of shops and cafés. Visit the ground floor where market stalls offer local produce such as cheese, wine, pastries, fruit and vegetables.

The currency used is the Bulgarian Lev thought it is expected they could adopt the Euro in the near future, 5BL is the equivalent of £2.12 making wining and dining in Sofia very cost-effective. It’s independent currency and impending rank means Bulgaria is ideal for a budget summer holiday.

To ensure your holiday is inexpensive throughout invest in a currency calculator. They’re not pricey and will ensure you know the cost in pounds of what you’re buying, so you don’t get tricked into spending more in the confusion of currencies. It is advisable to leave your mobile phone at home, if you must take it turn data roaming off to avoid any secret charges and check with your provider about your package allowances when abroad. Buy your supplies in the UK; sun tan lotion and other health products are considerably cheaper here as they’re more in demand abroad. Now you see that a summer holiday is affordable for all, despite what the newspaper is telling you. Follow Verve’s simple guide on blagging a five star break for a two star price.

FOOD

glorious foodWhy not try out this gorgeous summer pudding, easy to make, and perfect for any dinner party you may be attending. Try it out!

1.Bring out the juices: Wash fruit and gently dry on kitchen paper - keep strawberries separate. Put sugar and 3 tbsp water into a large pan. Gently heat until sugar dissolves - stir a few times. Bring to a boil for 1 min, then tip in the fruit (not strawberries). Cook for 3 mins over a low heat, stirring 2-3 times. The fruit will be softened, mostly intact and surrounded by dark red juice. Put a sieve over a bowl and tip in the fruit and juice.

2.Prepare the bread: Line the basin with cling film as this will help you to turn out the pudding. overlap two pieces in the middle of the bowl as it’s easier than trying to get one sheet to stick to all of the curves. Let the edges overhang by about 15cm. Cut the crusts off the bread. Cut 4 pieces of bread in half, a little on an angle, to give 2 lopsided rectangles per piece. Cut 2 slices into 4 triangles each and leave the final piece whole.

Build the pud: Dip the whole piece of bread into the juice for a few secs just to coat. Push this into the bottom of the basin. Now dip the wonky rectangular pieces one at a time and press around the basin’s sides so that they fit together neatly, alternately placing wide and narrow ends up. If you can’t quite fit the last piece of bread in it doesn’t matter, just trim into a triangle, dip in juice and slot in. Now spoon in the softened fruit, adding the strawberries here and there as you go.

3.4.

Let flavours mingle then serve: Dip the bread triangles in juice and place on top - trim off overhang with scissors. Keep leftover juice for later. Bring cling film up and loosely seal. Put a side plate on top and weight down with cans. Chill for 6 hrs or overnight. To serve, open out cling film then put a serving plate upside-down on top and flip over. serve with leftover juice, any extra berries and cream.
