Experience, Quality and Price

and John Merjave, the band makes up a popular Asbury Park, New Jersey Beatles tribute band called The Weeklings.

“We grew up playing in bar bands, where you had to learn every song,” Mr. Weinberg said. “We were the guys in bands that learned all the parts, and really had a deep respect for the arrangements and the energy and the good feelings that the songs brought.”

Growing up in the New Jersey bar scene, Max Weinberg learned every style he could.

“As a drummer, my background is I played with anybody and everybody I could. I had to know every style, and I was very good at that. It was hard to stump me, which was great training for being in the E Street Band. When I first joined, half the songs were songs we grew up with.”

“I started working as a drummer, getting paid, when I was about six years old, as a sort of kid novelty act locally in New Jersey. Playing was better than bagging groceries at the local supermarket. So I started doing that in about 1968, just a local wedding band guy. I just kept playing, everything from Latin music, cha-chas, marches, all sorts of different stuff. I figured out early that if you knew how to play a lot of differ-ent styles, you worked a lot more. As a drummer you need to have that kind of var-ied experience.”

“The role of a drummer is sort of like the white line in the middle of a road. People can drift a little, but they always come back to the white line. That’s the role of a drum-mer in any band.”

“So when I went to put this band together, I wanted to play what I like to play. I decided to go back to the songs I played as a teenag-er. That’s what our set is, the songs I played when I was a teenager.”

Max Weinberg’s Jukebox plays with a video screen showing about 250 songs. The audience yells out the songs they like on the screen, and the band plays everything from Elvis to the Beatles to Springsteen.

“We do a half dozen Bruce songs. Most of the people who come to my show are Springsteen fans, but I don’t necessarily fea-ture that material. When they ask for Bruce songs, we’re happy to play that stuff.”

Twice he’s been asked to play the quirky joke request Free Bird, and when it comes up, he’s happy to oblige.

“It’s not on the list, but when people request something like that, if one of us knows it, we try it. The last Conan O’Brien show I did in 2010, Will Ferrell was a guest, and he sat in with my band and we played Free Bird. Will of course played cow bell. That may have been the first time I ever played Free Bird.”

“You never know what we’re going to play. It’s not a concert, it’s a party. People should come expecting to have a good time. We encourage dancing in the aisles. I try to go for the emotional response I had to this music. That’s the idea, for us to be fun.”

Mr. Weinberg says he enjoys both being the band leader, as he is with Jukebox, or following a band leader, as he does with Bruce Springsteen.

“They’re very different. I embrace both rolls. I’ve been a band leader for a long time. I think my experience as a band member has very much informed my performance as a band leader. I’m sensitive to everything

that band members feel and go through. As a drummer, I need great musicians around me. There can only be one Buddy Rich, who could sit there and play drums for an hour and people wouldn’t complain. But most drummers need great musicians.”

“I like taking direction, particularly from people who know how to direct. I’ve worked with one of the great band leaders in history, and learned so much from that experience with Bruce.”

One important lesson learned from Bruce Springsteen is that the size of the crowd doesn’t matter.

“When the E Street Band is rehearsing with Bruce, in a small room literally the size of a bedroom, he’s as intense in that rehears-al as he is in front of 150,000 people. You only play one way. In terms of performance, there’s no difference between a recording studio, a club, or a stadium.”

“My favorite quote on the subject came from Frank Sinatra. He was asked what kind of gigs were his favorite to play. He replied ‘they’re all $50 dates.’ He was saying I do what I do, whether it’s small, big, medium.”

“If you were dropped on the stage in a Bruce concert, you would notice how incredibly relaxed it is, and that comes from years of playing under every conceivable condition and room and studio. We used to rehearse in Bruce’s bedroom in New Jersey, literally in his bedroom.”

“I play my heart out, whether it’s a small place or a big place. Every time I sit down to play the drums, I really go for it. So when you’re seeing me, you’re getting my best on any given night. I never slack off.”

“People bring their children to these shows, and they tell me how they appreciate the experience of seeing me play live in a

smaller place than with the E Street Band. They want their young kids to see the guy who plays with Bruce Springsteen. And they get exposed to good musicians and great songs, so what could be bad?”

This offer is subject to change at any time, without notice. This offer is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: AR, CT, DC, FL, GA, MD, MS, NC, NJ, NY, SC, TX and VA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 2.08% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money (from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., or its affiliates) to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this offer. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply, and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 02/15/2019, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in AR, CT, DC, FL, GA, MD, MS, NC, NJ, NY, SC, TX and VA with an account balance of $0.01 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking or Wealth customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 03/25/2019 to 05/31/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. 1,2. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer, except the Portfolio by Wells Fargo $500 offer, available from March 25, 2019 until May 31, 2019. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed.© 2019 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. Prayers really are the answerHasn’t getting the Bible and prayer out of

schools been a great move? Now, costly police officers and ‘guardians’

replace them in most schools. Metal detec-tors greet students each day in some schools. You can visit your child’s teacher, after you go through security clearance. We may yet get armed teachers, if some have their way.

No money for competitive teacher pay; no money for supplies or texts, since most of it goes to fortify schools. Teachers face phys-ical abuse from children who disrupt learn-ing regularly for classmates. Those children receive no meaningful consequences. Visits to ‘the office’ that used to be fraught with dread are now an adventure. And, mass school killings continue on a regular basis across the nation, despite all the fruitless expense.

Maybe the Bible and prayer weren’t really such a bad idea after all? They sure gave us better outomes than all these expensive measures are producing. ‘The proof is in the pudding.’ Think about it.

Ditto about Mueller InvestigationI could not agree more. Complaints about

the costs which are well worth the findings “So far, the Mueller witch hunt has uncov-ered a coven of witches”. The Benghazzi investigations were costly and proved noth-ing. The other thing people don’t seem to grasp is that justice department has been doing the job it is supposed to be doing and they were appointed by Trump and he is not immune to criticism or investigation, no president is. Trump spends a awful amount of time tweeting and ranting about what is fair to him and not fair to him, continually repeats no collusion, that does not mean he’s not guilty of other things, that’s what we have a Dept of Justice for.  Partisan politics

aside, anyone should want a full investiga-tion completed and let the findings be decided, from the looks of things already there’s a lot to uncover.

Regarding the school voteTo the retired teacher, thank you for cor-

recting me about public school teachers actually working 188 days. The pay really equates to a start at about $30 per hour plus benefits. Hardly minimum wage. What do you do for the other 6 months while taxpay-ers are working 250 days a year for mini-mum wage? By jumping onto the bandwag-on of other communities looking for a pay increase for a few, you’ll actually be lowering the already low standard of living for the many.

Surprised at paperSurprised and annoyed to see three col-

umns of Trump bashing printed in your Rants & Raves with a lot of incorrect accusa-tions included. Sorry to see that you have joined that group. To me, Hometown News was free of all this political hatred and I am very disappointed that it is just another one in the crowd. Sad.

Editor’s note: The Rants & Raves are a platform for readers to give their opinion on topics of interest to them. These opinions are the author’s and not those of Hometown News . Thank you for reading and for sending in your opinion.

It’s line clearing timeIt’s pre-hurricane season and FPL con-

tractors are clearing lines. A much needed and appreciated service. When I once tried to make a suggestion, as I felt as a long time resident of my neighborhood, I had some

knowledge of how we are hit, I was not received as being helpful and was informed that they are contracted to clear a certain distance from the line and that was what they did.  I guess that makes sense, but every time we have a hurricane I am out of electric a very long time as it is an old neighborhood with lots of well established trees. While I understand that property owners are responsible for doing their part, I also know that older neighborhoods have older folks with limited resources. Some of the trees have been around for generations. Also, it seems like they could do a little more of an eye pleasing job. They have the equipment and man power. I am not expecting a job like an expert would do, but it wouldn’t hurt to round out the areas and make them look a bit better. But, I guess no one goes the extra mile, or inch nowadays. Thank you, Hometown News for your Rant & Rave sec-tion. I promise my next letter will be a rave.

Feels sad for ranterAfter reading this article in the March 22

issue, I am saddened for the author that he or she is suffering from an acute case of

TDS. (Trump Derangement Syndrome), perpetuated  by the inability to accept elec-tion results.

It is a shame that one fails to see the posi-tive strides that have been made in our country since the incompetent  last admin-istration.

I pray for you and others who are also afflicted to think what is best for the Ameri-can people and see the glass half full instead of half empty.

Remember what Jack Kemp said which was reiterated by Ben Carson in dealing with Mayor DeBlasio when aiding in the NYC housing crisis, “A rising tide lifts ALL ships.” (also, don’t rely on google’s para-phrased representation of this meeting, read Dr. Carson’s verbatim transcript).

In response to the investigationTo the person who wrote that President

Trump was colluding with the Russians,  HA! Mueller report is out and guess what?! No collusion! Witch hunt? Yes it was, and the President and the American people need an apology!

Happy with decision

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Sea turtle nesting season began March 1, and runs through Oct. 31. Treasure Coast beaches are among the most important nesting spots in the world for sea turtles.

Sea turtles are protected by the feder-al Endangered Species Act and the Flor-ida Marine Protection Act. Leather-backs are listed as “endangered” by the Endangered Species Act, while Logger-heads and Green turtles are “threat-ened.” It is against the law to touch or disturb nesting sea turtles, hatchlings, or their nests.

Beaches in Indian River Shores, in particular, are one of the most import-ant nesting areas in the Western Hemi-sphere. The town has regulations (Code of Ordinances 91.41 through 91.43) regarding restrictive lighting during turtle season.

Those who live near the beach are required to limit beachfront lighting, as it disorients baby sea turtles, who will crawl towards the artificial light instead of the ocean. Adult sea turtles generally avoid nesting on lighted beaches.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, 2018 was a mixed year for sea turtle nests, both in Indian River County and throughout Florida.

In Indian River County in 2018, Leatherback nests increased from 37 to 47, while Loggerhead nests decreased from 5,924 to 5,722, and Green turtle nests decreased from 2,510 to 240.

On the Treasure Coast as a whole, Leatherback nests increased from 359 to 549, while Loggerheads decreased from 22,052 to 21,660, and Greens decreased from 9,355 to 1,206.

Florida-wide, Leatherbacks increased from 663 to 949, Loggerheads decreased from 96,886 to 91,451, and Greens decreased from 53,102 to 4,545.

Beach visitors can help by taking sim-ple precautions. Most important is to pick up and remove balloons and plastic bags found on the beach, as they remind sea turtles of jelly fish, and can be dead-ly if eaten. Beach walkers should also pick up and remove fishing lines, kite string, and discarded lines from boats, all hazards to sea turtles.

Above all, take your trash with you when you leave the beach.

Several Treasure Coast organizations conduct public sea turtle watches. For most, reservations are required. The FWC recommended sea turtle watch entities are: Archie Carr National Wild-life Refuge, Vero Beach, (321) 723-3556; Disney Beach Resort at Vero Beach, (407) 939-8687; and Sebastian Inlet State Park, entrances from both Vero Beach and Melbourne Beach, (772) 338-2750.

Sea Turtle nesting season underwayBy Mike [email protected]

Photo courtesy of Indian River County Coastal Division ProgramsSea turtle nesting season has officially started in Indian River County and this morning, March 26, at about 8 a.m. this leatherback, the largest of all sea turtle species was spotted on the beach. This nest will take about 80 days to incubate. Rarely do we get to see daytime nesters, let alone leatherbacks, so this surprise was the best way to start the nesting season.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Indian River Coun-ty has launched a new public outreach campaign to discourage residents from placing plastic bags and wraps in curbside recycling bins, and to expand drop-off recycling locations for these plastics.

County officials were surprised to learn from a recent survey that nearly 70 percent of Floridians incorrectly believe that plastic bags and wraps should be placed in curbside bins for recycling.

The county is trying to expand the existing recy-cling programs for plastic bags and wraps that cur-rently include local Publix supermarkets and the school district’s 28 schools.

“Please, do not put plastic bags and wraps in your curbside recycling bins,” said Sue Flak, Recycling Education and Marketing Coordinator. “They do not get recycled at curbside. They harm recycling equip-ment and cost taxpayers more money. Instead, plastic bags and wraps should be taken to retail stores that offer drop-off programs such as Publix, or one of six county locations for recycling.”

The six locations are the Fellsmere, Gifford, Oslo, Roseland, and Winter Beach Customer Convenience Centers, and the Indian River County Landfill. Addresses and hours for each are listed at the end of this article.

While recycling of plastic bags and wraps has been available at some retail stores, the county recently added new RACK’nPak Recycle Bagging System col-lection bins to make it easier for residents to recycle properly.

Plastic film packaging is the soft, flexible polyeth-ylene packaging such as grocery, bread, produce, zip-top storage and dry cleaning bags. It’s also the wrap around many products including paper plates, nap-kins, water bottles, paper towels, bathroom tissue,

and diapers. Also accepted at the recycling locations are plastic

shipping envelopes without labels, bubble wrap, deflated air pillows, plastic cereal box liners that do not tear like paper, and any film packaging or bag that has the How2Recycle label.

The county says these materials get recycled into products such as new grocery bags, benches, shop-ping carts, and decking.

Do not include degradable/compostable bags or film packaging, pre-washed salad mix bags, frozen food bags, candy bar wrappers, chip bags, or six-pack rings.

The drop-off points collect clean, dry plastic bags and film. They ask that you remove receipts, clothes hangers, or any other items from the bags.

County recycling officials plan to measure progress in three months, and hope to find a reduction in plas-tic bags and wraps in curbside bins and increased col-lection at drop-off convenience centers.

Addresses and hours of landfill and customer con-venience centers: Landfill, 1325 74th Ave. Southwest, Vero Beach, open seven days per week, 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Customer Convenience Centers are open 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Roseland CCC, 7860 130th St., Roseland, closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Winter Beach CCC, 3955 65th St., Vero Beach, closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Gifford CCC, 4901 41st St., Vero Beach, closed Tues-day and Wednesday. Oslo CCC, 950 1st Place, Vero Beach, closed Wednesday and Thursday. Fellsmere CCC, 12510 County Road 512, Fellsmere, closed Wednesday and Thursday.

Additional drop off points include most local Pub-lix and Winn Dixie stores, Target, Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, and JC Penney.

Specific addresses for local drop off points, search-able by zip code, can be found at plasticfilmrecycling.org.

VERO BEACH — Paul Morris, a resident of Vero Beach, received the highest award from the Boy Scouts of America, the rank of Eagle Scout, on Feb. 20, 2019.

Paul, a 15-year-old sophomore at Indian River Charter High School, completed an Eagle project to fix kayak racks at the Vero Beach Marina. Paul led and managed a team of 22 workers he organized, consisting of some members of his church and his scout troop, in the reconstruction of the kayak racks. He and his team completed 195 person-hours on the project.

Materials were donated by Lowe’s Home Improvement of Vero Beach. Paul had a plaque engraved and installed at the site of the project recognizing Lowe’s for their generosity and community engagement.

Service to others is an important part of the Scout Oath: “… to help other people at all times.” Each year thousands of young men strive to achieve the coveted Eagle Scout rank by applying character, citizenship, and scouting values in their daily lives.

One of the requirements is to plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, school, or community. Through this requirement, scouts practice what they have learned and gain valu-able project management and leadership expe-rience.

Paul received a letter of recognition and thanks from the mayor of Vero Beach. Paul also

had his grandparents and uncle fly to Vero Beach from Utah to attend his ceremony, along with other friends and family.

Paul intends to serve a two year mission for his church after high school graduation. Upon completion he plans to pursue an education in the healthcare field.

VERO BEACH — Cyclists helped Ride Pov-erty out of Town during the Feb. 23 United Against Poverty A1A Centennial Challenge cycling tour along the Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway.

Starting at South Beach Park in Vero Beach, cyclists chose between a 40-mile ride with a turnaround at Sebastian Inlet Surf and Sport or a full 100 miles in honor of the Vero Beach Cen-tennial which took them to Table Beach in Mel-bourne.

Along the way, cyclists enjoyed ocean views as they peddled to raise money and awareness, to help United Against Poverty with their mis-sion to empower people living in poverty lift themselves and their families to economic self-sufficiency.

“Today we’re here with the Vero Cycling Club to Ride Poverty Out of Town,” said Anna-bel Robertson, United Against Poverty execu-tive director. “Rev. Scott Alexander has been riding bikes for United Against Poverty for a long time. He’s ridden across the country and raised more than $150,000.”

An avid cyclist, Rev. Alexander has put more than 10,000 miles on his bike, raising awareness and money for United Against Poverty as he made his way across America on three different occasions.

“I like United Against Poverty’s approach,” Rev. Alexander said. “They don’t just throw food at the poor. It’s so much more than a food bank. It’s a holistic approach to helping people lift themselves ‘UP’ and out of poverty. That’s crucial.”

“I believe in their model. I realized that rather

than riding across America with a few people, it would make more of an impact if a larger group of people from Vero Beach did a one-day ride together. That’s 100 miles for one day as opposed to 3,500 miles for a whole month,” said Rev. Alexander.

Top fundraiser Miles Conway raised more than half the day’s proceeds and was on hand to send off riders even though he was unable to participate in the ride. While training, Mr. Con-way was struck by a car, leaving his bike in ruins and him with seven broken ribs and a cracked vertebra.

“I pulled out all the stops to be the top fund-raiser for this thing,” Mr. Conway said.

To ensure a safe ride, Orchid Island Bikes provided mechanical support, and Vero Beach Amateur Radio Club members were stationed along the route for anyone needing assistance.

After the ride was concluded and bikes were returned to their racks, cyclists and United Against Poverty supporters gathered at Waldo’s for the Splash party. The cyclists chatted pool-side, comparing notes on sights seen during the early morning ride and making plans for next year’s event.

The $7,500 raised from the ride will help break the cycle of poverty by funding education programs at United Against Poverty. The pro-grams help individuals build a prosperous life for themselves, their family and their commu-nity and include crisis stabilization, education, job training and food assistance programs.

“We serve over 640 people a day at our local centers,” said Ms. Robertson. In 2018, United Against Poverty provided 214,217 services to 4,765 families in need.

The facility will house nine agency partners, a medical clinic, new educational and entrepreneurial programs and enable United Against Poverty to triple the number of clients participating in STEP and double the daily capacity of the member share grocery.

VERO BEACH — The hottest restaurant in Vero Beach may be Post & Vine. On a recent Friday evening, my wife and I decided to check out the restaurant’s vegan options, to see if they are, as rumored, among the best in town.

Post & Vine has a very hip feel, with varied, well-curated music, including Motown, jazz, and Sinatra. The décor is contemporary, yet minimalistic and uncluttered.

The highlight of the restaurant is the outdoor seating area, under a fixed structure but open on the sides and airy, with a unique vibe. Though the restaurant is on 14th Ave., it doesn’t feel like sitting outside on a busy street. The atmosphere is more like eating in a backyard garden, with modern yet casual furniture to match.

Comfortable seating around the fire pit cre-ates another area with an even more relaxed vibe.

Ample space between tables allows a sense of privacy even though the restaurant was relative-ly crowded. At no point could my companion and I hear what people were saying at nearby tables, which led to the comforting conclusion that nobody could hear our conversations.

With all of the openings around the seating area creating a lovely fresh breeze, noise seems to flow out and away instead of reverberating in the restaurant.

A huge ceiling fan that looked like an air-plane propeller wasn’t needed the night we were there, though it looked like it could cool an

enormous area. We enjoyed a natural breeze of perfect temperature.

While our meal focused on the vegan options, the Post & Vine menu includes a unique and varied selection to please all palates, including appetizers Bruschetta, Avocado

Ranch Fried Mushrooms and a Bavarian Soft Pretzel served with house made honey dijon mustard; a variety of soups and salads, and lots of sandwiches and burgers. Entrees include Tangy Garlic Skirt Steak, Marinated Chicken, and Salmon.

Even the available sides offer variety, includ-ing Roasted and Charred Brussel Sprouts, Jas-mine Rice, and Grilled Asparagus.

Post & Vine is co-owned by Sean Tuohy and Bobby Del Campo. On this night we asked Mr. Tuohy to put together his choices of vegan dish-es, and the result was exquisite.

Travis, our server, was very nice and attentive to our needs. Travis gave us sharing plates so we could each try everything.

We started with Jennie’s Black Bean Hum-mus, a puree of black beans, fresh garlic, extra virgin olive oil, lime and spices, served with grilled pita wedges, $8. We found it a refreshing change from the more common chick pea hummus. It tasted super fresh, with no unnec-essary ingredients.

Next we split the chili and the tomato lentil soup, and our only disagreement was which was better. My wife thought the chili was the best part of the meal, with “exactly the right kick,” while I was even more impressed by the soup.

The Vegan Chili was made with black beans, red kidney beans, tomatoes, roasted red and green bell peppers, roasted Poblano peppers, garlic, chipotle peppers and vegan crumbles in a rich spiced sauce, cup $7, bowl $11.

The Tomato Lentil Soup, the highlight of my meal, is a delicious vegetable-based soup with tomatoes, onion, carrot, garlic, green lentil, kale,

curry, cumin and thyme, cup $7, bowl $11.My wife and I prefer very different spice lev-

els, but our selections somehow managed to satisfy each. Janet likes everything extra spicy, while I prefer most things mild. With each dish, we were each happy with the spice level.

Our overriding impression of each appetizer was “fresh,” with each ingredient seemingly hand-selected for our order.

While those items were sufficient for a meal, we had to try the Beyond Burger, a plant-based patty, pan-seared and topped with vegan provo-lone, vegan mayo, lettuce, tomato, avocado, pickles on a pretzel bun, $13.

This was an impressive, filling burger, espe-cially compared to a generic veggie burger one finds elsewhere. The star of the show is the patty that looks and cooks like a traditional burger, with a perfect texture. The Post & Vine burger was perfectly prepared, with a generous stack of toppings.

The pretzel bun that came with the veggie burger doubled as the perfect dipping bread for the appetizers. The hummus came with grilled pita wedges, which was nice, but dipping pieces of the pretzel bun from the burger into the hummus was extraordinary. That bun worked so well with the chili and lentil soup also that I’d suggest Post & Vine offer the toasted pretzel buns as dipping bread with other appetizers.

As hard-to-satisfy vegans, we were most impressed that each dish was created with as much thought and care as the non-veggie meals on the menu. This is greatly appreciated by veg-ans and vegetarians who wish to have the same dining experience as their companions.

Post & Vine is nice for a full meal, light snacks, or just drinks, with a large and comfort-able bar area with full bar and ample wine selec-tion. My wife enjoyed a glass of the house Cab-ernet, which she said was far above average and

even better than the pricey wine she enjoys at home.

Dress ranges from fancy to very casual, and neither seemed out of place. We went at happy hour on a Friday and there was a mix of busi-ness and dating attire, plus beach casual. Many came straight from work, meeting friends to hang out by the fire pit.

Post & Vine has a comfortable dog-friendly zone. Among locals who enjoy dining with their pooch, Post & Vine is a hit. There is enough space so that the dog and non-dog areas don’t encroach upon each other.

Hours are Mon., Tues., 4-9 p.m., Wed., Thurs., 4-10 p.m., Fri., 4-11 p.m., Sat., 3-11 p.m., Sun., 3-8 p.m. Happy Hour, Mon.-Fri., 4-6 p.m.

Hometown News – VERO BEACH – www.HometownNewsTC.com Friday, March 29, 2019 17

Florida is officially a busy sports place this time of year. We have the PGA and Champions Tours here, motor-

sport racing in Daytona and Sebring, college basketball, and even ice hockey. For me though , this time of year used to turn my attention to baseball. There was a time when baseball filled my childhood and when Spring Training came around, I was in heaven.

In my teens I discovered that I could combine my two loves, baseball and golf. Thanks to the Los Angeles Dodgers and the wonderful complex known as Dodgertown in Vero Beach, I could roll into town with my sticks and my mitt and kill two birds with one stone.

By arriving early enough I could get in nine holes at Dodgertown Golf Course and then catch the afternoon game between the Dodgers and another club. I had to arrive early though, as they would close the course for parking a few hours before the ball game.

I was not the first to think of this. Baseball players from the days of Babe Ruth often spent as much of their spring playing golf as they did hitting and fielding.

In 1948, Branch Rickey and co-owner, Walter O’Malley, moved the Dodgers’ spring training operations from Pensacola to a disused 80-acre naval training base in Vero. During World War II the base served as a training facility for divebomber pilots learning to fly night missions. On the same property where pilots practiced strafing and bombing, the duo brought nearly 600 players to chase fly balls, run bases, swat mosquitoes and stay somewhat sober

during their lonely evenings. With the South still rampant with

racial prejudice, many of the black players would travel to Fort Pierce on their free time to find public courses where they could enjoy a round of golf. In 1953, O’Malley had designed, with input from players and coaches, a pitch and putt golf course around a man-made lake on the property.

Because space was limited and there were only a few holes, O’Malley decided in 1965 to build and maintain his own course, adjacent to Holman Stadium. He hired a pair of minority coaches, Jim Gilliam, a former Dodger player and Preston Gomez to design the track.

The nine-hole course opened in 1965 and was available to all the Dodger players as well as the public. Being an avid golfer, O’Malley could often be found on the links.

To aid his own game, O’Malley oversaw the design and was in charge of where the bunkers were placed. When he noticed that one of his best friends and top competitors, Dr. Jim Priestly, tended to push his tee shots to the right, O’Malley had workers put bunkers in those very spots.

Even Kay O’Malley, Walter’s wife, was often seen on the links with friends, including Leila Alston, wife of then

Dodgers’ skipper Walt Alston. The course featured nine holes, played

to a par of 36 from the back tees and measured 2,823 yards long. From the forward tees the course played 2,433 yards long and the par was 35. The course was relatively flat with elevated greens and bunkers. Pine trees lined the fairways and water came into play on only two holes.

Just past the left-field mounds (there never were any outfield walls at Holman Stadium), sat the first tee. The opening hole was a par-5, playing just 452 yards. To get to the green in two, you had to go over the lake behind the third-base stands.

With the course being right on the Dodgertown property, players could be found there pretty much any time they weren’t playing baseball. On a given day you could find Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, Roy Cam-panella, Vin Scully or many more Hall of Famers enjoying a round.

Maury Wills learned the game of golf here. Being an African-American meant that many places weren’t open to him and his fellow players. He found solace on the course and learned the game.

Sadly the end came in 2004 when the

Dodgers were sold. The new ownership found that today’s players weren’t interested in playing the quaint course, regardless of its history, and shut the doors.

Soon after, the team picked up its bats, balls and mitts and moved its operation to Arizona. The Dodgers spent 61 years in Vero Beach. The team, its players and fans were not just a part of the city’s history; they were part of the city itself.

I don’t happen by the old Dodgertown complex often, but when I do, seeing the vacant plot of land where Dodgertown Golf Course used to be makes me sad.

I think about all the great players who walked those grounds. I think of how difficult it must have been for those African-American ballplayers to find things to do in those days, and how wonderful it was that O’Malley built something for ALL of his players to enjoy.

Spring 2019 is here and the roses are in bloomHi everybody and welcome!

With everybody getting his or her yards ready for spring, the one

thing everybody wants is color. Color is one of the main elements that make your yard stand out. One of the most practical ways is through the use of roses. Roses are beautiful flowers that symbolize love and friendship. Imagine yourself entertaining your friends in a lovely alcove surrounded by colorful flowers. Roses are relatively easy to grow and are a great choice because they will often grow where other flowers won’t because of Florida’s intense summer sun. You can buy roses as either a container plant or as bare rootstock.

Roses can be successfully planted in either containers or in the ground. In either case, the plants should be in well-drained

soil in a sunny location. If you plant your treasures in the ground, be sure the soil drains well. Dig a hole about 15 – 18 inches wide and eighteen inches deep. Put a layer of gravel on the bottom of the hole. This is to allow drainage so water drains away from the root system. The same would apply if you plant your roses in a container. The next step is to prepare the soil you are going to use to plant your roses. You should use a mix of a good quality potting soil with

around half the mix-ture composed of organic matter such as mulch or peat. You can also use some bone meal with your soil mixture. Now, it’s finally time to plant your prize. Carefully remove the plant from its original con-tainer. Place the plant in your prepared hole so the top of soil layer on the plant is the same level as the sur-rounding soil. Fill the gap underneath the plant with your pre-

pared soil mixture. Now, fill the gaps around the remaining parts of the plant and pack down lightly. You are now ready to water in your newly planted rose.

OK, you finally have your roses planted and they are bursting with color, now you need to do some p e r i o d i c m a i n t e -nance to maintain that beau-ty. Since we live in such a humid climate, certain diseases such as black powdery mildew and black spot can both be a common problem. Both dis-eases are much easier to control if you pre-vent them happening in the first place. Once established, both are very difficult to get rid of. Although there are many products on the market that are used for disease control on roses, Orthenex reigns as the king. The product controls not only diseases but also controls insect infestation as well. If you are interested in an all-natural cure for fungus, how about baking soda. That’s right, baking soda. Plain ordinary baking soda added at the rate of 3 teaspoons per gallon of water. You then can add a small amount of mild dish detergent to the mix to act as a spreader

sticker. This will work as a preventive mea-sure but will not work well if an infection is

present. Be sure not to make your mix too strong as damage to your roses could

result. With all the remedies

that we have at our disposal for con-trolling rose prob-

lems, probably the best way is pre-vention. One way is to avoid watering late in the day so the leaves of the

plant do not stay wet all night. Also

it is important to have good soil drain-

age. Roses are heavy feeders

and like a good supply of food. Roses should be fed at least once a month. You can use a good quality commercial food or you can use your own mix, which should consist of 1 cup of bone meal, 1-cup cotton-seed meal, one-half cup blood meal, one-half cup fishmeal and one-half cup Epsom salts. You can spread this mix around each plant and then water in.

That’s it for this week and I hope you enjoyed it.
