Vernon “Skip” McCain 2014 Alumni Week Classic
UMES Club Football Proposal
UMES Club Football Princess Anne, Maryland
Vernon “Skip” McCain Alumni Week Classic
UMES Club Football Proposal
Honorees: Vernon “Skip” McCain and Members of UMES Football from 1947 to1979
Vernon “Skip” McCain was head football coach, head
basketball coach, and athletic director from 1948 to 1964. If
only the media had found its way to the Eastern Shore of
Maryland and the tiny village of Princess Anne, what a story
they would have uncovered.
The entire nation would have discovered a football
powerhouse who broke both racial barriers and the
competitive spirit of the teams they played. America would have recognized that
this humble, 5 foot 5 inch man had a higher winning percentage (83.3%) for a
17-year period than some of his more famous coaching contemporaries recorded
during the same era. Coach McCain’s record for his 17-year coaching career was
an astounding 105 wins, 18 losses and 7 ties. This included six undefeated
seasons--four were perfect seasons in 1949, 1950, 1952, and 1955. He was
inducted in the College Football Hall of Hall in 2006, and was awarded
American Football Coaches Association Trailblazer Award in 2013.

About the
Vernon “Skip” McCain Football Reinstatement Fund
Vernon “Skip” McCain Football Reinstatement Fund is the primary vehicle established by the
alumni to help fund and support club football program at UMES. This Fund was established in
2002 by Bryant C. Mitchell (Class of 1978) in memorial of two Hawks greats: Coach Vernon
“Skip” McCain, Coach Harold “House” Gray (Class of 1963) and one fallen Hawk, Terry
Fiddermon (Class of 1979).
