I happened to be in a local convenience store recently, and found myself perusing some magazines while I was waiting on a prescription. To my surprise, and frankly, utter disappointment, on the cover of almost every single women’s magazine, was some type of “anti-aging” directive. “Look Younger”, “Defy Aging Now”, “Get Younger Looking Hands” – essentially saying “hey ya’ old bat, smooth your face out will ya’? We’re tired of looking at it. Oh yeah, and don’t forget your hands – they’re looking pretty buggered up. And while you’re at it, why don’t you just stop aging altogether because we’re against it? Aging is bad.” Sure. No problem. Let me get on that.

Did someone figure out a way to stop time and I missed it? That would be weird – especially as I’m sort of looking forward to retirement, travel, watching my kids get old, and if I’m lucky, maybe grandkids, becoming wiser, and whatever else the next chapter holds. We are aging. And we’re supposed to fight

it why? First off, “anti” anything to me sounds like an epic battle. A war. Personally, I’d rather not be at war with something that is as a matter of fact, going to happen. So while I’d like to say I am ANTI-anti-aging, I am in fact PRO-aging. Yepper. Like a favorite pair of Levi’s – yeah, the first time you put them on, they were nice, crisp, and pretty cool. Now they are lived in. A little beat up, but SO much better.

And before I’m misunderstood, here’s my disclaimer: Everyone should do whatever they need to do to feel good about themselves – that may be exercise, volunteering, wearing whatever the hell you want with your head held high, and sure, Botox or boobs. But that desire and motivation should come from within – and should have nothing to do with this notion that God forbid, we might look like we’re getting older. C’mon. There are gals in their 20’s getting work done. Maybe it’s just me, but that seems terribly disturbing.

ENOUGH ALREADY.So with that, I felt strongly that we lead this year with a “pro-aging” message. And display it proudly on our cover. In bold print. Standing tall.

You may have noticed a new campaign we kicked off in February. We called it Love Your Lines (see later in the magazine) – fashioned after something The Today Show did called Love Your Selfie. We wanted to celebrate those facial lines we’ve worked so hard for. Every. Single. One. If you haven’t already done so, I encourage you, your friends, your moms, sisters, daughters (if they are 40 and up), to participate – we are going to carry this campaign throughout the year. Let’s send a message – we in fact, are quite happy with all that aging has to offer (okay, most of it anyway), and can’t wait to see what’s next.

Don’t Panic! Not a tummy bearing crop top but a grown up sophisticated version.

The most important part of the crop top is the top that ends at your waist and not your hipbone. A small but noticeable difference in the silhouette of the top.

You want the crop top to look modern and deliberate. It should look like a top that has been sliced at the waist. This change at the hemline will change the entire silhouette of the top.

| HOW TO WEAR THE CROP TOP - CASUAL |

We love the Tibi perforated knit 3/4 sleeve version. Modern chic very straightforward but totally updated by cropping the hemline. This top would pair easily with a high waisted trouser or slouchy boyfriend denim. To make sure it is not tummy bearing wear a tank top under the sweater for slight extra coverage.

| HOW TO WEAR A CROP TOP - DRESSY |

Timo Weiland in my opinion nailed it with this look for the season. He used luxurious knit with an updated lace paired back with a fit and flare high waisted black skirt - it’s perfect for a cocktail event. Paired with monochromatic a-line skirt make it a bit more lady like and totally wedding guest appropriate. V

Don’t ever feel like your age should keep you from rocking a braid! You’ll even notice a couple in our fashion spread. The braid is a

style you can absolutely make work day or night - and there are so many ways to pull it off.

Kevin used the Bumble & Bumble Pret-a-Powder in our model Erika’s hair before starting her style. It acts as a dry shampoo, and absorbs any oils or build-up on the scalp.

He then sprayed her hair with Bumble & Bumble’s Dry Spun Finish, to add texture. Finishing the style with Oribe’s Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray.

15 simple secrets to burn more calories1 | Talk Time = Walk TimeMake it a rule that if you’re talking, you’re walking. When the phone rings, you have to get up to answer it. So, why not take advantage of this non-active time and make it active.

If you have a meeting with a friend or co-worker, make it a walking meeting. Walking actually allows you both to think more creatively and at the same time relieve stress. Now, your conversations will be even more productive while you are burning calories.

2 | Get More Vitamin DVitamin D is crucial in helping us to maintain our bone density by regulating our calcium and phosphorus. However, in recent years, we are learning that Vitamin D also plays an integral role in our metabolic and immune functions. A simple blood test (the 25-hydroxy

vitamin D) can be performed to test whether or not you have a deficiency.

With the appropriate amounts of D, your body will get out of a fat-storage state and into a fat-burning one, which could potentially speed weight loss by up to 70 percent.

So, how do we get Vitamin D? It takes about 20 to 25 minutes of sun exposure to get your daily requirements according to Stephen Honig, MD, director of the Osteoporosis Center at the Hospital for Joint Diseases. Dr. Hoing also states Vitamin D supplements can help you get your proper daily dose, and it allows you to stay away from UV Rays which can lead to skin cancer. Fatty fish, like salmon, trout, mackerel, tuna, and eel are all good sources of vitamin D. Too much vitamin D can be toxic; however, try to stay under 4,000 IUs that includes all sources—food, sun, and supplements.

3 | Set a Timer to Increase your Workday ActivitySometimes we get so involved in our tasks we lose track of time. A very practical, but effective way to increase your daily activity is to set your cell phone alarm to go off every 30 minutes when you’re working on a project that requires you to be sitting for long periods. This will serve as a reminder for you to get up and walk around, or do a set of 10 jumping jacks during inactive tasks. These intermittent spurts of activity will also help you to perform better on the job. It will increase your creativity, alertness, and allow you to retain more information.

4 | Wear a Physical Activity Tracker Information is power and in this world of technology it has become incredibly easy to track our physical activity. Activity Trackers take the guesswork out of answering the question…Do I live an active lifestyle?

With these devices, you can easily track trends - e.g. which days you are more active than others. The bands can also serve as a motivators during the day to get you moving more. There are several good trackers on the

market right now. Here are just a few that are readily available:• Jawbone Up / BodyMedia• Garmin’s Vivo Fit • Polar’s Loop

These trackers give you data about the number of steps you’ve taken, distance you’ve traveled, stairs you’ve climbed, calories burned and overall active time in a day. Different trackers come with all different features. Some

vibrate when you’ve reached your 10,000 step goal, whereas others vibrate if you’ve been inactive for too long. With some devices you can also track how many hours you sleep and find out if your sleep was restless or sound.

Most trackers have smartphone, social networking capabilities and can connect to other applications like MyFitnessPal.

There are some fun things that come from the social networking capabilities. For most of these trackers, you can link to your friend’s and family and see their activity levels. This has resulted in some fun competitions and most certainly encouragement and support.

5 | Sleep MoreHave you ever had a sleepless night and the next day couldn’t eat enough to feel satisfied? This is a result of the hormones leptin and ghrelin. Ghrelin produced in the gastrointestinal tract stimulates appetite. Leptin on the other hand is produced in fat cells, sends the brain the signal when you are full. Sleep deprivation drives leptin levels down (satisfaction down) and causes ghrelin levels to rise (appetite up). Sleep deprivation also causes people to make poor food choices.

A study conducted at Stanford University showed participants who slept less than eight hours a night not only had lower levels of leptin and higher levels of ghrelin, but they also had a higher levels of body fat. Interestingly, the study also showed that those who slept the fewest hours per night weighed the most.

Your nightly goal should be 8 hours of non-interrupted restful sleep. The Mayo Clinic gives seven tips to get more and better quality sleep:1. Sleep Schedule: Go to bed at the

same time every night.2. Food and Drink: Don’t go to

bed hungry or overstuffed, avoid nicotine, caffeine and alcohol

3. Room: Make your room cool, dark and quiet, find the right mattress and pillow, if you share a bed make sure there is enough space

4. Bedtime Ritual: Do the same thing every night: take a warm bath, read, listen to music, avoid watching the television

5. Naps: Limit naps to about 10 to 30 minutes

6. Physical Activity: Get regular physical activity but avoid working out too close to bedtime

7. Stress: Find healthy ways to manage stress…get organized, set priorities, delegate tasks, take breaks, connect with friends and jot down what’s on your mind before bed.

6 | Feed Your MetabolismPack your diet full of foods and beverages that rev up your metabolism. For example red beans are a resistant starch. They have lots of fiber and the B vitamins in addition to the zinc which will help to boost your testosterone level, thereby increasing your energy and helping your body to build more muscle.

Other metabolism boosting foods include: raspberries, strawberries, grapefruit, broccoli, cayenne & jalapeño peppers, garlic, cinnamon, and mustard seeds. Green and Oolong tea are one of the healthiest beverages you can select. They have powerful antioxidants and nutrients that have been proven to increase your metabolism. Studies have shown Oolong tea can increase metabolic activity by as much as 10 percent and Green tea can increase fat oxidation by 17%.

7 | Laugh MoreThe International Journal of Obesity published the results of a small study where adult friends were shown funny or serious movie clips. The participants wore heart rate monitors to measure their heart rates and calories burned. This research found that laughing increased both heart rate and calorie burn by 20%. The more time spent in laughter, the greater the calorie burn. The final results showed laughing 15 minutes a day will burn 10 to 40 calories which can result in a 1 to 4 pound weight loss in a year’s time.

The coconut oil was shown to reduce participant’s waist circumference and improve the overall all health of the women in the study. Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides. Guilt-FreeMe-TimeThe title alone sounds delicious. For many of us, it also sounds unrealistic, unattainable and unnecessary. It shouldn’t. Finding time in our busy schedules for Me-Time is not only a luxury, it is vital to our emotional and physical well-being.

Busy is a loaded word these days. Many women feel pulled in all directions at once except inward. We are often the living definition of the “sandwich generation.” According to the Pew Research Center, just over 1 in every 8 Americans aged 40 to 60 is both raising a child and caring daily for a parent, in addition to between 7 to 10 million adults caring for their aging parents from a long distance. Add to that the normal everyday schedules that encompass family commitments, work, school, extracurriculars, maintaining a household…the list is endless, different for each of us, but the end result leaves us wishing there were a extra few hours in the day—maybe then we could find time for ourselves.

We don’t realize that the extra time is already there. The trick is in finding it. We all spend time each day on tasks that don’t necessarily need to be done—updating social networking profiles,

surfing the internet, watching those three reruns of Friends, folding mountains of laundry that could just as well be assigned to the kids. The world will not end if the socks aren’t sorted properly or the towels are put away messy. We can free up time if we try.

It helps to get a little creative with this idea. Most women are guilty of thinking they can do it all: remember that old commercial about the woman who can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, and never let her man forget he’s a man? (Click here if you need a reminder) So many of us have integrated that ideal into our consciousness. I am superwoman, hear me roar. No help needed. But. Help can be good, especially if it’s given and received fairly equally. Learning to accept offers of support not only frees up time, it also provides the “helper” a sense of community and closeness—we’ve all experienced this. Let your neighbor shuttle your son back and forth to karate when she tells you she’s taking her son anyway. You know you’ll repay the debt babysitting her child after school on Tuesdays. When your significant other says, “I’ll do the dishes,” (he really does sometimes), say thank you and walk away. If your mother tells you she’d love to babysit, instead of waiting to take her up on it when you have a dentist appointment, ask her for a few hours on a Saturday and resist the impulse to be productive. Don’t clean the house. Don’t catch up on paperwork that you know is due next week. Set aside a block of time just for you, and then really use it. There a million suggestions for how to use it, but it’s doubtful you need them. Given a few free hours and the mandate not to accomplish a task, we all have our own individualized, coveted activity we’d love to finally get to.

Here’s where the Guilt-Free part comes in. Overall, the equation looks like this: Me-Time = Decreased Stress Levels = Improved Physical and Mental Health.

By this point, most of us are thinking of our much needed Me-Time and what we’d love to do with it. Read a good book—cover to cover, or at least until you can’t keep your eyes open any longer. Attend a concert with a friend. Spend an entire day scrapbooking, for the sheer joy of the process, not the end result. Take yourself on an impromptu road trip, and see where you end up. It won’t matter anyway. What will matter is that you took the opportunity to take care of yourself. We are better for it—we return, whether after two hours or an entire day, refreshed, rejuvenated, and with a whole new outlook.

VM: How did City Girls Soap come about? Had you been thinking about it for years, or did it just sort of happen?

AM: It just sort of happened. I was reading O Magazine, there was a little blip about goat’s milk ice cream and at the same time we were trying to find an ice cream that our lactose intolerant daughter could eat. We bought a share of a goat herd, made ice cream and then started dreaming of a business and what else could we make.

VM: Many of us struggle with trying to determine how to turn our passion(s) into something we can actually pursue as a career. When did you realize there was a means to do this, and how did you begin?

AM: John and I have always dreamt of having a job together. We both come from a restaurant background, love urban farming and were definitely trending towards getting back to our roots. We started making cheese, John took a few weekends of intensive cheese making classes, and we gave it away to everyone we knew. We

got great responses, but starting a cheese business was extremely cost prohibitive. So… after a few weekends fueled by red wine we came up with soap as an alternative product. Same thing, researched how to make it, gave it away to everyone we knew. We started working with the MSU Product Center and our advisor, Frank Gublo. Frank and the product center helped us with labeling requirements, packaging, etc. When we received extremely positive responses back about the soap, we knew we were onto something. It’s not easy, we were both working full time, and poured a ton of our savings into it, but had a product we truly believed in.

VM: Who were some of your biggest supporters?

AM: Our families and friends have been huge believers, if you have a low self -esteem day… call your friends and family! Also our earliest cheese/soap supporter was Matt Naimi of ReCycle Here! in Detroit. He tried our soap, and gave us an avenue to start selling and the ability to talk to our customers!

VM: How did you come up with the name?

AM: The name was the easiest part. The goats live in Detroit (City) and female goats are affectionately called “Girls” ~ So City Girls Soap!

VM: What was the toughest obstacle you faced and how did you handle it?

AM: My toughest obstacle can be self- doubt. There have been many, many days, where I asked myself if we should keep going? Was it worth it? How much could we afford to invest? How much can we afford to lose? Then something happens that affirms you are on the right track and you can’t let your self -doubt take over. You have to push through and stay committed to your vision.

VM: If you had a chance to do anything differently, what would it be?

AM: I wouldn’t do anything differently! Every single hiccup, disappointment, glitch has enabled us to learn, tweak and refine our product!

VM: What type of advice would you give women when debating whether or not to take the leap in trying to turn a passion into some type of career?

LW: Hmmm…. Passion usually starts with a dream, but to turn your passion into a “product” you need to move slowly, do research, explore existing markets to see if you have a viable “product”. This doesn’t negate your dream at all, but a passion for Brussel Sprout jam probably wouldn’t go very far. You have to be prepared to be told “right now might not be the time”, but don’t give up! Just be prepared to fine tune your idea, realizing that even if you have to fine tune your idea, you are still staying true to the essential element of your dream/passion. Refining does not mean giving in! Also, listen to customer feedback. Your customers can essentially determine the long term viability of your product.

VM: What’s next on the horizon? How do you see this growing?

AM: Currently we are working on making a Goats Milk Lotion, early testing shows it to be FANTASTIC!! We are also working on moving and growing our production facility to an urban goat farm in Detroit. Our goal is to move by year’s end. When we do this we would be able to host field trips and be a Agri –Tourism, Agri – Education destination.

VM: How do you work to maintain a balance between work and home?

AM: Well right now with school and our kids being teens it’s not as difficult as when they were younger. I am pretty sure I would not have tried this when they were little. Running your own business though, you can control your schedule and make yourself available or not. Plus if the kids are having a bad day, we scoot down to the farm for some goat love.

Why is this task such a chore? You know you need to do it; you know Spring is the perfect time; and you know how much better you feel when it’s done, so why is cleaning out and organizing your closet right up there with cleaning out the garage?

Perhaps because it involves making some tough choices. Not life or death tough choices, but choices you’d rather push off another year. Maybe you believe that the primary color, padded-shoulder jacket WILL come back in style; that your favorite jeans from the 90’s WILL fit again… eventually… at some point; or maybe you will FINALLY get invited to that all-white-Diddy-esque yacht party that you had in mind when you purchased that insane white romper. Well, enough is enough. The time has come.

Instead of tackling this task singlehandedly, it’s time to bring in the big guns – or in this case, “gun”. That “gun” needs to be the one person you know who will shoot you straight (really, no pun intended). This is not the person who tells you that you look great in everything. Did you know that during economic depressions, we tend to wear darker colors? During our most recent recession we lost much of our color so to speak, and moved in the direction of solid, simple colors such as black, white and gray. And while the mood has shifted and we are beginning to see bright, bold colors coming back to the scene, shades of gray have decided to stick around and have become one of the hottest requests from homeonwers.

Gray is the new black, beige and brown. A neutral color that can set a sophisticated tone to a room, gray can be used as a foundation color that can work with brights as well as pastels. Blue grays such as Sherwin Williams Foggy Day (SW6235) is a favorite and works well with red tones such as copper and dark stained wood with a red tint to it. It can read either blue or gray.

The final trend that is on the horizon is a new pastel color palette. It is not the Easter Egg pastels we remember from days past but a more earthy pastel palette. According to Pantone.com, “Designers take a modern twist on the traditional for spring 2014 by pairing soft pastels with vivid brights to create a colorful equilibrium. Inspired by a mixture of blooming flowers, travels abroad and strong, confident women, designers use color to refresh, revive and defy conventional wisdom.” Pastels are first being seen in fashion but are quickly moving into décor. Light blues and soft grays have been the first. A great version of this color is Oystershell by Benjamin Moore (864). It is the perfect blend of blue, green and gray for a cool calming color.

Color is the background of our lives and with all of the choices available to us there is something for everyone right now. Grays, pastels - and bolds too - are all out there to experience. Choose the color that reflects the mood you want to set. V

T| TRADITIONS |A popular tradition has always been making a bouquet out of the shower gifts’ ribbons and bows and using it as a stand-in for the real one at the wedding rehearsal. It’s always lovely for a family member of the bride or groom to give something old, new, borrowed, and blue. They are still favorites of today’s brides as well. Another cute tradition to start could be passing around photos from the shower of the mother-of-the bride, or taking a snapshot with multiple generations of women.

| FOOD |Think light and easy when it comes your menu selection. Serving finger foods is a lovely way for the ladies to mingle whilst they snack keeping the atmosphere friendly and social. But whip it up a notch with some chilled soups served in your grandmother’s favorite china cups and saucers.

FIngredients:2/3 cup sliced blanched almonds (71 grams)1 cup confectioners’ sugar (117 grams)2 large egg whites, room temperature¼ cup granulated sugar (53 grams)

FillingPreheat oven to 350 degrees with rack in lower third. Place almonds in a food processor; process until as fine as possible, about 1 minute. Add confectioners’ sugar; process until combined, about 1 minute.

Pass almond mixture through a fine-mesh sieve. Transfer solids in sieve to food processor; grind and sift again, pressing down on clumps. Repeat until less than 2 tablespoons of solids remains in sieve.

Whisk egg whites and granulated sugar by hand to combine. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Increase speed to medium-high and beat 2 minutes. Then beat on high 2 minutes more.

The beaten egg whites will hold stiff, glossy peaks when you lift the whisk out of the bowl. Add

flavoring and food coloring, if desired, and beat on highest speed 30 seconds.

Add dry ingredients all at once. Fold with a spatula from bottom of bowl upward, then press flat side of spatula firmly through middle of mixture. Repeat just until batter flows like lava, 35 to 40 complete strokes.

Rest a pastry bag fitted with a 3/8-inch round tip (Ateco #804) inside a glass. Transfer batter to bag; secure top. Dab some batter remaining in bowl onto corners of 2 heavy baking sheets; line with parchment.

With piping tip 1/2 inch above sheet, pipe batter into a 3/4-inch round, then swirl tip off to one side. Repeat, spacing rounds 1 inch apart. Tap sheets firmly against counter 2 or 3 times to release air bubbles.Bake 1 sheet at a time, rotating halfway through, until risen and just set, 13 minutes. Let cool. Pipe or spread filling on flat sides of half of cookies; top with remaining half. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate.

DDEVILED HAM & PECAN TEA SANDWICHES

Makes 32 tea sandwiches

Ingredients:½ pound cooked ham, cut into 1-inch pieces½ medium onion, quartered3 large sweet gherkins½ cup pecans, toasted and cooled2 tablespoons Dijon mustard1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce¼ cup mayonnaise16 slices firm white sandwich breadGarnish: chopped parsley and pecans

Directions:Pulse all ingredients except bread in a food processor until finely chopped and combined well.

Spread ham mixture (¼ cup per sandwich) between slices of bread. Discard crusts, then cut sandwiches into triangles.

Ingredients:3 medium tomatoes (about 1 pound)1 small yellow onion, finely diced (1/2 cup)2 heaping tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro

(about 6 sprigs)2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar, white wine

vinegar, or champagne vinegarKosher salt to tasteFreshly ground black pepper to taste4 medium cucumbers, peeled, seeded, and cut into

large dice (about 3 cups)2 small jalapeño chiles, seeded and finely diced

(about 2 tablespoons)2 cloves garlic, minced1 cup vegetable broth, homemade (page 104) or

store-bought2 cups plain yogurt

Directions: 1. Set a strainer over a medium bowl. Core the tomatoes, cut them in half crosswise, and using your pinkie finger, tease the seeds out of the cavities, letting them drop into the strainer. Tap the rim of the strainer against your palm for 30 seconds, until most of the flavorful gel clinging to the seeds dissolves and drips into the bowl. Discard the seeds.

2. Finely dice the tomatoes and transfer them to the bowl with the tomato water. Add the onion, cilantro, and vinegar, and toss. Season the salsa to taste with salt and black pepper, and refrigerate it. (Salsa will keep 3 days in the refrigerator.) Place the soup bowls you intend to use in the refrigerator, too.

3. Combine the cucumbers, chiles, garlic, vegetable broth, and yogurt in a food processor, and pulse until smooth. Season to taste with salt and black pepper, and chill for at least 30 minutes and up to 3 days. Divide the soup among the chilled vintage teacups, and garnish each serving with a couple spoonfuls of the salsa.

One can’t help going to Paris without some serious expectations-- so much history, art, beauty, and sophistication. So much gathered in one place. Paris is shrouded by clichés --I will not list them all here. But, I was lucky enough to have a second look at this city and I realized that the best way to experience it is to just pretend you are part of its fabric (no fashion pun intended). Now, I’m not saying I can pull the wool over anyone’s eyes. It isn’t like I’m Audrey Hepburn strutting the streets with white gloves. The locals aren’t going to to mistake me for a fixture of the community. Talk about authentic at any age -- the women there definitely know how to pull off any look. But what I mean is that Paris can be overwhelming from an outsider’s point of view -- and rather than try to tackle every museum, every tourist attraction, and every top restaurant on Trip Advisor, it is better to just walk the streets and ‘laissez-faire’.

HOME BASE: ÎLE SAINT LOUIS

Even though it can get high tourist foot traffic during the day, Île Saint Louis is a great place to set up base. This small island in the middle of the river Seine is home to 17th century architecture, ice cream, and a great place to people watch or to just stare at the Notre Dame (which sits next door on Île de la Cité). Walking the bridge that connects Île Saint-Louis to the mainland, it is common to find a juggler or a pianist encircled by a crowd of amazed and appreciative onlookers. The downside is that there are few hotels on this island. But don’t let that stop you -- there are flats available for rent at a range of prices. If you listen to anything in this article -- please listen to this piece of advice -- stay on Ile Saint Louis!

Ok. So, you are set up in a gorge place where you could literally people watch at a café delicately eating crêpes, (you should also eat crêpes) or paint watercolors by the Seine all day long (or watch other people do watercolors by the Seine all day long). If you need more - consider checking out the following:

| RODIN MUSEUM | This museum is a must.

It is one of my favorites because it is manageable. Small, intimate, well-laid out, and has artwork and sculptures both inside and outside. Plus - it’s cool to think that Rodin actually lived there towards the end of his life. They also have those audio tours available if you are interested in more history than what is on the small, rather indescript plaques. I suppose another reason why this museum stands out to me is the fact that it is personal and allows you to focus -- which is hard to do in Paris. And a bonus? It iseEasy to get to from your home base -- take the subway and a quick walk.

| SACRÉ-CŒUR |

Traveling to this magnificent edifice is well worth the trouble and distance. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Paris is perched on the highest hill in Paris in the 18th arrondissement -- a bit of a jaunt from Ile Saint Louis, but well worth it. This beautiful church has both a historical and religious significance -- as it was built as a national penance for the rebellion of the Paris Commune and also serves as a symbol of morality.

Montmartre -- the hill that gives its name to the town -- known for this rebellious spirit -- has a very artistic vibe. It is common to see painters set up with their easels outside in the town square -- ready to sell their labors of love. There are sketch artists walking the streets -- soliciting the tourists for a chance to draw their head shot. (and then sell it to them of course).

| GARDEN TUILERIES -- JARDIN DES TUILERIES |

This garden (once the national garden of France) has had many face lifts throughout history, but it really is a wonderful place to stroll, relax, and watch people unwind. The park is sprinkled with green iron chairs that can be moved to capture the best view, the best conversation, or the best sliver of sunlight. While there, one can envision the inner workings of Catherine de Medicis’ brain (she was one of the many designers of the garden), hear the chatter and gossip of interesting people lunching, and check out the local joggers (yes, some people do actually jog in Paris). If you feel motivated and want to add to the experience, the Musée de l’Orangerie is a small museum located off of the gardens that has Monet’s Waterlilies murals. Stunning. If you get hungry -- or are even more ambitious -- the Louvre museum is at the end of the gardens. The Louvre is a lot to tackle, and in my opinion, not as memorable or meaningful as a visit to the smaller museums. However, if you still want a taste -- Café Marly (situated on the courtyard of the Louvre) has a superb Salad Niçoise -- and many other things. You will feel like royalty.

Literally meaning, George’s house. And that’s about right. The ambiance and wait staff here can be a tad rough, but please don’t let that stop you from going. It’s like you are eating at George’s house, but maybe he didn’t invite you over. Either way, the food he makes you doesn’t suffer from this same malaise. Lentils, sole meunière, hot apple tart. Please. Go here.

| BRASSERIE LIPP |

Founded in 1880, this is an establishment in Paris. Brasserie translates to ‘bar/ brewery’ in English, but in France you get a wide range of things for this. Lipp is about as far over on the fancy pants end of things as you can get. Pinkies up folks. My sister and I stopped here on a whim whilst window shopping in the area on a Sunday afternoon. It was between meals, but it appeared that many people were brunching. We sat on an enclosed front porch and were never given a white tablecloth, even though everyone else had one. (We, of course were offended by this, and thought that perhaps it was due to our attire). Despite this smugness (which we rarely encountered on this second trip to

Paris), I would still recommend going to Lipp. If only to experience their lip. Ba Dum Bump. We ordered a half bottle of red wine and some chocolate desserts. Delish. Plus, some killer people watching. It will round out your experience in Paris nicely.

| LA CIGALE RÉCAMIER |4, rue Récamier, 75007 Paris

Sophisticated. Souffles. I would leave this place until the latter part of the trip. It is a nice finishing touch. Here you can experience souffle for dinner and dessert! Amazing! A bit tough to find, but the secluded alley scene is totally worth it. We ate outside -- but the inside looked to be full of diplomats and all sorts of important French people -- again somehow dressed like they walked out of a magazine, but without trying. I recommend the lobster souffle for the savory and the Grand Marnier for dessert -- but you really can’t go wrong. Although Paris is not an inexpensive trip -- you don’t have to do much to enjoy your time there. What are you waiting for? It really is time to start planning.

Like Audrey Hepburn said, “ Paris is always a good idea”.

Kim Parker came from a musical family, who offered consistent connection with music and art. At age three, Kim’s paintings were being framed and hung by her mother. But at age 8, Kim joined the family’s musical quartet as a flutist. That first recital solidified for Kim that she had found her instrument. By age 11, Kim Parker was winning major competitions, which led to her playing principal flute at Tanglewood under the direction of Leonard Bernstein, at age 16. After graduating from Oberlin’s Conservatory of Music, Kim moved to New York but quickly realized that she was not ready to settle into a career as an orchestral flutist. Instead, she tried her hand at a variety of jobs until a friend introduced her to the fashion industry, where Kim was hired as a painter of textiles. She welcomed the renewal of creativity and the opportunity to paint again. Eventually she went out on her own, marketing her designs to various clients and building a reputation for bold florals. At the 2001 licensing show, London’s Premier Rug Manufacturer, The Rug Company, licensed her art and her career as an artist - the designer hasn’t slowed since. Her flowers now grace every surface imaginable- rugs, chinaware, home décor, clothing and bedding, as she continues to roll out new ventures, including television production and children’s publishing.

Kathy Davis had taught art for ten years when she found herself a divorced, single mom determined to launch her own greeting card business. In 1990, she began working on blending her calligraphy and painting styles into formal greetings, from a small drawing table in the bedroom of her Pennsylvania home. She launched her career when she bravely took a few of her greeting card designs (in an empty Godiva chocolate box acting as her “portfolio”) to exhibit at the National Stationary Show! Since her start, Kathy has built an extensive collection of not only 40,000 designs and messages, but to licensing her artwork for fabric, bank checks, calendars, housewares and gifts. Elsa Mora, mixed-media artist, was born the fifth child of eight, in Holguin, a province of Cuba. A blended family living in an area of great poverty, crime and drugs, she struggled to overcome her surroundings and to this day thanks creativity for her success in doing so. At age 16, Elsa learned that she had been told an incorrect date for her birthday. Her mother had changed the date by a day, to have it align with Mother’s Day! This made Elsa realize that she could be anyone she wanted, and that creativity and imagination could solve any problem, material or emotional! Escaping at age 16, which in Cuba considers one an adult, she moved to a different province of Cuba, graduated from art school and then worked a series

of jobs. After a divorce and a move to Havana, she met her current husband, a film producer, who changed her life, as she now enjoys her new role as fulltime mother and mixed-media artist in Los Angeles, California. While Elsa works in many mediums, she is most known for her work in paper cut illustrations. She has exhibited her work across the country, been featured in American Craft Magazine, has had her illustrations featured in numerous magazines and is currently illustrating a children’s book entitled, Fables de la Fontaine! V

VM: How did the Foundation begin? What was the idea behind it and what goal are you marching toward?

RWF: In 2003, Rhonda Walker visited Consortia College Preparatory Academy to speak to the 7th and 8th grade girls about the importance of making the right life choices and staying encouraged. Toward the end of her talk, one young lady raised her hand and spoke about the personal challenges she faces: “No one in my family encourages me. No one tells me I can accomplish anything. As a matter of fact, I’m told that I will not amount to anything better than what I am now.” One girl’s voice, made a life changing impact on Rhonda. Thinking that other girls may feel the same way, Rhonda realized the larger role she could play in Detroit. Following the example of community service set by her parents, later that year Rhonda launched the Rhonda Walker Foundation (RWF) with the mission to empower inner city teen girls towards becoming strong, confident, successful, and moral future leaders.

Over the next three years, our goal is to strengthen our partnerships, expand our capacity, and retool our programs. Far too many of our girls are falling between the cracks. In Michigan, 69% of 8th graders are unable to do math at grade level, and 68% do not read at grade level. It is our sincerest belief that the choices and opportunities available to adolescent girls will determine in many respects our future. It is imperative that we leverage our resources needed to prepare, empower, and protect adolescent girls.

VM: What types of programs do you have in place to help these girls succeed? How many are you able to enroll a year? How many have you reached?

RWF: The mission of RWF is accomplished through our five year intensive Girls Into Women® (GIW) program, which includes mentoring, leadership opportunities, specialized workshops, and enrichment activities.

Girls are recruited from one of four of our partner schools, all of which are located in Detroit. School liaisons identify at-risk but promising girls in 7th grade and recommend them for the program. Selected girls enter the GIW program at the end of their 7th grade year and stay with us until they graduate high-school.

Since its inception, the RWF has served hundreds of teen girls. We are proud that 100% of the teens who complete the Girls Into Women program have graduated from high school and enroll in college. When compared to the overall graduation rate of 69% for African-American girls in Detroit schools, you can see the difference supporting teen girls can make.

VM: Have you seen many changes in the teens you’ve encountered since the program’s inception in 2003? If so, how have you dealt with it?

RWF: The RWF has been 100% volunteer led. As a result, the need to serve more girls has outpaced our ability to serve. There isn’t a week that goes by that we don’t receive an email from a teen or a mother requesting information on how to join the GIW program.

VM: What do you see as some of the Foundation’s greatest successes? What would you consider to be your biggest challenges – short term and long term?

RWF: To date, our greatest success is that 100% of our girls who complete our 5-year GIW program graduate from high school and enroll in a 2 or 4 year college.

Our greatest challenge is keeping up with the growing needs of the girls and their families.

VM: What are the different ways people can get involved? Where do you need the most help?

RWF: There is always a need for additional mentors. We need committed women willing to share their time and talent with a teen girl. V
