LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Friends of Bishop Montgomery,

With Gratitude,

Rosemary Distaso-Libbon

President/Principal

2 • VERITAS BISHOP MONTGOMERY HIGH SCHOOL

ON THE COVER:Katie Sitter ‘12 and Nicholak Gonzalez ‘12 in Bye Bye Birdie, May 2012.

As our students live each day, my prayer is that they write a story in which they use their voices to speak for those who have no voice—for those

who do not enjoy the blessings that they do, but instead want every day for the basic necessities of life. My prayer is that each day they write a story

that is large and generous, not small and selfish.

As I walk through the buildings each day and see the students in their classrooms or in the

hallways on their way from here to there, the sight of them is always a powerful sign of God’s

power and goodness. I am reminded of how much I love them as a community but also how

much I love them as individuals. I am reminded that each day that our students come to

Bishop Montgomery, they each bring a different story, that their particular presence and the

choices they make—the story they choose to write about their lives here—contributes to who

we are as a community. I am reminded that how they live their lives, and how we help guide

them to shape their lives now, not just after they have been graduated, matters. God has plans

for each of them.

As our students live each day, my prayer is that they write a story that proclaims that they are children of God, made in His image—a story that

proclaims that God has a plan for them—a plan to give them a hope and a future.

I cannot thank each of you enough for all you do to support our students as they write the wondrous stories of their lives.

I pray for each of our students every day, our students who are “amazing grace, precious jewels, special, miraculous, unrepeatable.” And I pray for

each of you too, our friends of Bishop Montgomery. I pray for your intentions and for those who you love.

“Be encouraged, for I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Isaiah)

As our students live each day, my prayer is that they remember that we all write our stories together. We are never alone. My prayer is that they

each hear the voice of God through the many, many voices with which He speaks to them.

As our students live each day, my prayer is that they write a story of generosity, that they seek opportunities to be generous, not just with material

things, but with their spirit. My prayer is that each day they write a story that is not a generous praise of them, but instead, a glorious praise to God.

The Latin word Veritas is defined “truth.” In Roman mythology, Veritas was the god-dess of truth, a daughter of Saturn and the mother of Virtue. Veritas is also the name given to the Roman virtue of truthfulness, which was considered one of the many virtues any good Roman should have possessed. “Veritas” is included in many university mottos as well, including Yale University’s Lux et Veritas (Light and Truth). Veritas is also the motto of Harvard University, and the Dominican Order of the Roman Catholic Church. The BMHS motto is “justice, truth, honor” and the case can be made that all pursuits, if they are valid, must first be rooted in truth. We, as a school community, certainly strive to achieve that goal.

COVER STORY

By Megan Ashby-Moreau '01

The best kept secret on campus is a tiny theater located behind the gym, lovingly referred to as TMH. The size of the theater, however, in no way compares to what lies within: whole worlds, imagination brought to life, and at its very heart, a close knit family. The program the

theater houses is officially called Drama Lab. Why Drama Lab? Because we experiment in the impos-sible and we formulate masterpieces; we are the mad scientists of the performing arts. “On my first day of Theatre Arts, Mr. [Dee] Masters explained why we were called ‘Drama Lab,’” recalls Sierra Evans ‘10. “He said ‘You are not here to be perfect. You are here to learn. We experiment, we make mistakes, but we always strive for making something new.’” More than this, however, Drama Lab is a home. A home for aspiring actors, for students who want to try something different, for students who perhaps are not sure where they fit in, for students who dance, sing, juggle, play the ukulele, or want to share whatever other talents they harbor. Mr. Masters, our founder, has often said that he believes that God has given each of us talents, and that God wants us to use those talents; in doing so, we bring glory to God. We provide a home for those talents. Anyone who has been involved in our program can tell you that they fall in love with it, yours truly included.

My name is Megan Ashby-Moreau, BMHS class of 2001, Drama Lab alumnus, and currently one of the directors of our program, and this is my love letter to Drama Lab.

A Love Letter

COVER STORY

No love story can be properly told without

the history of how it came to be. So allow

me to take you back more than 15 years to

when Drama Lab first started, when I first

met the legendary Mr. Masters. BMHS did

not have an official drama program, nor

a theater of any sort for quite some time.

When a willing enough teacher was found

to put on a production, it was conducted

in the gym, once a year. This presented

many logistical problems with lighting,

acoustics, rehearsal space, and seating.

The problem was clear: our school had a

wealth of talent and little or no outlet

for it—we needed an official drama pro-

gram, an actual theater, and a leader.

Enter Mr. Dee Masters (left).

Mr. Masters was already a seasoned director. He had run the drama pro-

gram at his previous school, had himself acted in many plays, and even

ran his own production company at one point. He stepped up to the plate

and gave the Bishop community what it so desperately needed. But where

could we put a theater? The answer was not conventional…well, actually

it was, in a manner of speaking. The old convent at the top of the hill was

given to him to mold into a working theater, and believe me, it was no

easy task. One tiny room, formally the chapel, would serve as the stage

and seating area. To convert it, Mr. Masters would have to cover over

all the windows, build a stage, rig

lights (which he did using coffee

cans my own mother saved up),

paint everything, figure out how

to get actors on and off the stage

and start building up a costume

and prop collection. Everything

had to be done from scratch; he is

a magician when it comes to mak-

ing something out of less than

nothing.

And so it was my freshmen year

when I first heard his booming

voice over the PA, “This is Mr.

Masters for Drama Lab,” announc-

ing auditions for the first ever Drama

Lab production titled Java Jive. It was a variety show with one act plays,

poetry readings, acoustic guitar songs, and one awesome swing dance

number performed by two freshmen girls who would grow up to help run

the program—Ms. Melissa Rhoades-Rudder ‘01 and myself. That was

the beginning of many things. The beginning of a life-changing program;

the beginning of friendships that will last a lifetime; and for me, the be-

ginning of a calling. And it was all because one man chose to take on an

impossible task. “Mr. Masters has been one of the most influential people

in my life,” explains Erik Escobar ‘08. “He gave me something more than

just a script or role; he gave me the confidence to know that I can do

anything I want to do. I couldn’t be happier where my life is at 22. Not a

Masters would continue to do the

impossible. We started with two pro-

ductions that year and, by the time

I was a senior, we were doing four

shows a year. Today, we are proud to

be one of the only schools in the LA

area to offer that many opportunities

for students to participate in drama.

Because of this, our students are ex-

tremely diverse, ranging from football

players to ASB presidents. There was

always an opportunity for every student to be involved and

show different sides of themselves. Mr. Masters continued to run four

full-fledged productions a year for over 10 years while teaching full time

at Bishop AND teaching night school at Harbor College; he was an im-

pressive one-man circus. How he did it, I still don’t know. He wasn’t just

telling students where to stand on stage; he was building flats to look

like houses, arranging music, re-wiring entire buildings, teaching us how

to square dance, sewing costumes, doing voice and acting coaching, go-

ing to thrift shops searching for costumes, painting, sawing, teaching us

how to properly apply make-up, making flyers and tickets - all this and

more while trying to supervise

a crazy group of teenage drama

queens (and kings)…. something I

can only describe as trying to herd

feral cats during a rainstorm. He

not only did all these things on

his own for us, but he taught us

how to do them for ourselves. He

gave us an unusual, but invaluable

education. Leah Smith ‘01 recalls

those first few years: “A friend

once told me, ‘You can have fun

in a paper bag.’ Drama Lab was

our paper bag. Mr. Masters made

it fun because he gave us all the

tools we needed to do it ourselves.”

Our little program continued to grow and soon we could no longer be

contained in the tiny convent theater. It just so happened that the school

band program had dissolved the year before I was a senior, leaving free

their practice space: Thomas More Hall (TMH). It had nothing that even

resembled a theater, but it did have the space we desperately needed.

Masters didn’t bat an eye at the work that needed to be done. He simply

did what he does best - he made it work.

lot of my friends might be able to say that, but I know I can because Mr.

Masters gave me the ability to have the

drive and confidence to be able to take

my life wherever I wanted it to go and

ultimately, be happy and have fun.”

www.bmhs-la.org

Our first show in TMH was actually our first musical, an original 1940’s

production titled Our Boys. Mr. Masters pulled one more rabbit out of his

hat and wrote it for Rudder and me because he knew we were fantastic

swing dancers. He let us do all of the choreography, found a few tap

When Ms. Libbon hired me, she was enthusiastic about the fact that I

was interested in assisting with Drama Lab. She knew it was time to give

Mr. Masters some much deserved help. When I started directing, I was

overwhelmed by how much I loved it… and how much hard work it was!

I had a respect for Mr. Masters that one can only have after walking 10

steps in his shoes, and an understanding of why he did it. While it is an

exhausting amount of work, the best part of my day is walking into re-

hearsals. When I’m in the theater with my kids I catch a glimpse of myself

and my friends at 16. The camaraderie, the bonding that can only happen

after working together on a show, the silliness, the hanging out between

shows, the set painting parties, and of course, the applause. These are as-

pects that simply do not change with time.

Every show since has been done in TMH, and that former band room

transformed over time into our current theater. Masters started once

again from scratch, and before

too long, TMH was a beautiful

working theater, red curtains

and all. I didn’t get to see the

full transformation until I was

hired back as a teacher at Bish-

op right out of college. I was

blown away at how far Drama

Lab had come.

are very welcoming of others,” explains Lauren Hugo ‘13, current Drama

Lab co-president. “I have done productions with a company before, and

sometimes people can be cliquish, but the people in Drama Lab are always

excited to meet new people.” Senior Morgan West ‘13, our other Drama

Lab co-president, adds, “As a freshman, I was scared out of my mind. I

was in a cast composed of nearly all seniors and I didn't know anyone.

The seniors completely embraced me. I found it astounding how so many

people bonded and supported one another.”

And that is part of the magic of Drama Lab - that and the rush of perform-

ing. There is no greater high than listening

to an audience experience a play you have

helped create: the laughter at our jokes, the

gasps at plot twists, and the applause when

it’s all over. In a way, this is how we serve

God, by serving others. For two hours, we

give our audience an escape, a little piece

of joy and happiness in a world that can be

unforgiving and sometimes too serious. We

ourselves become invested in the story and

the characters we create, and for many of us,

nothing is so fulfilling.

dancers, let me do all of the girls’ hair, and Rudder and I both brought

in our vintage dresses for costumes. I didn’t realize it at the time, but

this show foreshadowed an important part of my career - everything I did

then, I do now for the shows I currently direct.

BISHOP MONTGOMERY HIGH SCHOOL

The cast performs in the 2010-11 production of Guys & Dolls.

Rudder and I worked together for six years co-directing shows, spliting

the season with Mr. Masters. Our shows started small, but we progres-

sively kept challenging ourselves. We started doing more classical shows

such as a The Importance of Being Earnest. Ms. Rudder directed her first seri-

ous drama The Crucible, and I inherited the yearly musical. I started with

Guys and Dolls and moved onto Bye Bye Birdie. They were two of the biggest

challenges I’ve faced, but the most fun I’ve had directing.

When I asked students, both current and past, to describe Drama Lab in

three words or less, almost all of them used “fun” and “family.” While this

is a tight-knit group, they are wholly and most enthusiastically open to

welcoming newcomers into the fold. “I feel like the people in Drama Lab

A few years ago Rudder took over our Comedy Sports Improv Team, a

sister program of Drama Lab. “The Improv Team trains students in impro-

visational comedy,” explains Rudder. ‘Through the ComedySportz high

school league, Improv Team members have the opportunity to be trained

The alumni from my genera-

tion were sad to see the con-

vent theatre go, but we also

felt pride in the fact that we

helped to build the program

into what it is today. Upon

coming back to campus to see

shows that Rudder and I have directed, Smith commented,

“It blows my mind to go see shows there now and to see a large stage,

a sound booth, multiple lights, etc. Some of those costumes I remember

helping to make 15 years ago. I feel like I'm lucky to have been a part of

blazing the trail so that future students can have more opportunities than

I did.” I feel the same way.

I sometimes look up to the old theater on

the hill and miss it, but one thing is certain,

there is something magical about TMH. It’s

the community inside those walls… the one

aspect of Drama Lab that hasn’t changed in

over 15 years. The students who make up our

program are the most open and accepting

group of kids, and the most hard working.

What is most endearing about them is how

they really care about each other. “We work

together… we just have so much respect for

each other,” explains Veronica Nestojko ‘13,

current Comedy Improv co-captain. And, it isn’t just our actors who have

this special bond with each other; it’s EVERY person who contributes to

the show - actors, tech, crew, make-up, or the person running the spot

light. “The first time I was involved in a show was when I did tech my

freshman year,” explains Tyler-Rose Veguez ‘08. “I was nervous because

I thought people would look down on me for not actually being in the

show… but I realized that there was no such stigma in Drama Lab. Every-

one was respected for whatever role they were playing.”

Evans can attest to this fact - she participated in a Drama Lab alumni

charity show two years ago and confessed that she was nervous: “I was

standing on stage with grown adults, some of whom I had never met. I

went to our first read-through and I realized that I didn’t have to worry,”

she explains. “It didn’t matter that some of these people graduated in 2001

and I graduated nine years later. They were Drama Labbers. Sure, most of

them had careers, and spouses, and what seemed a much firmer grasp on

life than I could possibly have. But, we started in the same place.”

COVER STORY

This year, Rudder “retired” from directing and I took on a production

solo. I chose Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and I have to say, I have

dearly loved all the productions I’ve done over the years, but this one has

a special place in my heart. I learned so much about myself in undertak-

ing this show alone and I could not have been prouder of my cast. As

Mr. Masters says, “We are here to learn” and Drama Lab still teaches me

lessons today, just as it did when I was a

freshmen.

wanted the small black box theatre next to the football field and the

quirky bright-eyed kids that made me better, every single day.”

These stories are just a small sampling of what our kids go on to do. We

are endlessly proud of them, whether they choose to pursue theater or

not. Because of Drama Lab, we get to see a very clear and beautiful picture

of each individual as their best self… it’s awesome. The experiences they

have in that theater, the people they meet, the skills they learn, they carry

with them their whole lives. I know I do. “I’m naturally introverted, but

Drama Lab taught me to let myself go and showed me how to be the ex-

trovert when I needed to be – which has really helped me in my business

courses, in which networking is actually part of the curriculum,” explains

Veguez, who recently graduated from USC with a degree in Business and

Cinematic Arts. “I’m a confident public speaker,

I memorize quickly, and I’m creative enough to

keep people interested when I do presentations

which, again, my business professors loved... all

skills which I developed in Drama Lab.”

If you hadn’t realized it by now, this isn’t just my love letter to Drama

Lab. It’s a 15 year romance that involves hundreds and has quite literally

changed lives. The theater itself will eventually change one day, just as we

left behind the tiny convent theater for TMH. We will (hopefully!) move

on to a newer and bigger theater. But I say with perfect confidence, that

the heart and soul of Drama Lab will never change. Mr. Masters and I will

continue pushing forward and telling those wacky drama kids to “Break

a leg!” and watching them in their greatest and, in my opinion, most en-

tertaining roles as… well, themselves.

Love Always,

Megan Ashby-Moreau ‘01

by professional comedians and compete against other schools. Like

Drama Lab, the Improv Team members are welcoming to new members

and ceaselessly supportive of each other. And also like Drama Lab, the

Improv Team teaches and develops indispensable life skills--quick think-

ing, timing, cooperation, listening, communication--but, I'm often most

impressed by the way the students apply the philosophy of improvisation

to their lives.”

Many Drama Lab alumni continue to pursue theater in some way, both

in college and professionally. Katie Laner ‘11 is currently a Theater Per-

formance Major at Chapman University. Hugo and Miramontes plan to

be involved in theater in college and, perhaps, pursue it professionally.

Jeffery Thompson ‘06 is a theater owner and performs stand-up and im-

prov in Hollywood on a weekly basis. Escobar is a writer, performer, and

working stand-up comic who has worked with artists including Louie

C.K. and Daniel Tosh. He also works as a behavioral therapist for chil-

dren with autism and volunteers at juvenile halls and low income schools

where he uses theater workshops and improv exercises to help children

in need. He attributes his career to what he learned in Drama Lab. Evans

applied to and was accepted to Boston’s Emerson College, home to one

of the top theater programs in the country. Masters, Rudder, and I all

helped her prepare, from writing recommendations to coaching her audi-

tion piece. “The kids I went up against at my Emerson audition had been

classically trained,” explains Evans. “They had vocal coaches and came

from performing arts high schools that filtered students out to be the

prototype of what Emerson supposedly looked for. But, Emerson wanted

me. With that, they wanted Masters, Moreau, Rudder, and TMH. They

I am not alone. All of the students who

pass through TMH take away much more

than an education in theater arts. Vincent

Miramontes ‘14, who recently played a

lead in Pride and Prejudice, says that with

every new character he plays he finds new

facets of himself. Mark Casino ‘04 shares,

“Drama Lab taught me not to fear the

world; to be myself fully and completely

and not be afraid of what people thought

of me.” Christopher Dippel ‘07 explains

how Drama Lab fosters well-rounded stu-

dents: “Drama Lab is an organization that

has the ability to hone the academic, social,

personal, and professional prowess of the

students. I look back at my time as a part

of Drama Lab with incredible fondness and

pride for my personal growth and as a part

of a piece of something bigger than me.”

Escobar agrees with Veguez in the ways Drama

Lab prepares students for college and beyond.

“The majority of my friends from Drama Lab are

not actors,” explains Escobar. “They are law-

yers, businessmen and women, professors, or

working in high level entertainment industry

jobs. Why? Because Drama Lab doesn’t pre-

pare students to become the next great actor; it

prepares them to become a great person. I look

back on my BMHS experience and realize it

[Drama Lab] is where I received the social skills

and education I needed to make it in wherever

I wanted to go. I am who I am because of the

support, inspiration, and love from Drama Lab

and I know hundreds of other alums would say the

same. Drama Lab gave us, and gives current stu-

dents, something more than a solid education. It

gave us hope, excitement, fun, life long memories, joy, confidence, and the

knowledge that we have the ability to make our lives whatever we want-

ed them to be. Whether it was law school, medicine, an MBA, a teaching

credential, or acting itself, Drama Lab is the reason we can take our future

anywhere we want it go, and, more importantly, taught us how to let go,

be happy, and play a mean game of Zip Zap Zop.”

In Memoriam: Jorge and FrankBMHS Mourns the Loss of Two Longtime Maintenance Staff Members

The month of October was, needless to say, a tough time for the

entire Bishop Montgomery community, as we mourned the loss

of two longtime employees who spent their lives making the

campus a safe and beautiful place. On October 6, maintenance foreman

Jorge Alvarado passed away after a short battle with cancer. Just a few

weeks later, on October 20, custodian Frank Hernandez passed away

from liver and kidney failure. Both Jorge and Frank

will be missed, but their impact on the school will

be felt forever. “With Frank and Jorge, it was al-

ways about what was good for the school,” recalls

Principal Rosemary Libbon. “They cared about

the student; they cared about the environment in

which they came to live and learn every day. They

made a difference.”

Jorge Alvarado began working at Bishop Mont-

gomery in 1997 and he served as the maintenance

foreman for the last eight years. If something need-

ed to be done on campus, Jorge was always there

to do it and do it well, whether it was fixing a light

or building a bookshelf from scratch. “When I say

Jorge always had a smile on his face, I mean AL-

WAYS,” said Casey Dunn, Director of Admissions.

“He brightened up every day and he was such a

genuinely good person with a caring heart.” Spanish teacher Alda Rodri-

guez is one of the countless teachers who is thankful for his service to the

school. “Jorge was always so hard-working and honest,” explained Ro-

driguez. ““He was always there for you when you

needed anything.”

Jorge is survived by his wife, Floridalma, son, Jorge, Jr., daughters, Jen-

nifer, Sheila, and Vania, and granddaughter, Lea. He was 51.

Frank Hernandez was one of the longest-tenured

employees in the history of Bishop Montgomery

High School when he passed away in October.

Hired in 1976, Frank worked at BMHS for an

amazing 36 years, more than half of his life. Most

of his years were spent as the maintenance fore-

man and the last few years he assisted Alvarado in

almost every building project that needed comple-

tion. There is no doubt that Frank’s impact on the

school is far-reaching, perhaps more than anyone

could possibly know.

Spanish teacher Dulcie Galdamez recalls Frank

as quiet, but quite the jokester: “I remember that

whenever I needed something done in my room, I

would ask him to fix it, but he would say, ‘Oh, I can’t fix that. It’s too dif-

ficult,’” remembers Galdamez. “and the next day I would find him fixing

whatever I asked him. Whether he was joking or not, he always found a

way to fix things.”

BMHS Assistant Principal Steve Miller perhaps worked the closest with

Frank and Jorge the last few years. “When Ms. Libbon asked me to add

overseeing facilities to my duties here I did not hesitate saying yes be-

cause of Frank and Jorge,” recalls Miller. “While working closely with

them through athletics, I knew how much [former BMHS plant manager]

Mike Murphy had relied on them and that they pretty much handled ev-

erything. Nobody here will ever realize the love

they had for the students, faculty, and staff.

Their whole goal each day was to make this

the most enjoyable place for students to come

and learn and teachers to come and teach. They

always did way more than what was asked of

them because of their love and dedication. The

halls will never be the same without these two

great gentlemen.”

Frank is survived by his father, two brothers and two sisters. He was 68

“Both Frank and Jorge had a wonderful sense of

humor—Frank was quiet and shy and Jorge was

exuberant and open,” explains Libbon. “Frank

was still and serene with that knowing smile—

Jorge was active, always moving, bouncing from

one place to another, keys jangling, always with

that wide smile. They were men who solved

problems, built things, got things done, lived to

make things better and had confidence that they could make that hap-

pen—They were men to be counted on.”

“Frank and Jorge were so important to our Bish-

op community,” continues Libbon. “I can never

say thank you enough for all the many tasks

they did—and did so quietly and gracefully.

They never sought praise, never sought glory,

never expected thanks. We were dependent on

their hard work, their care for our school, their

care for the students and our faculty and staff.

When I think of them, I think of the lines from

the Ben Harper song: ‘I can change the world/

With my own two hands/Make a better place/

With my own two hands...I’m gonna make it a

brighter place/I’m gonna make it a safer place/

With my own/With my own two hands.’ This

is what they did. This is what they did every day

at Bishop Montgomery—with such large hearts

and with such great love—Thank you, Frank.

Thank you, Jorge. We love you. We will not

forget.”

Alumnus Aaron Dotson ‘11: A Man of Many Talents

One can certainly not accuse Aaron Dotson ‘11 of wasting his time while he was a student at Bishop Montgomery. He took advantage of the

opportunities provided by the school and made the most of his high school years. This desire to try things - to branch out - has continued as he makes his way through his sophomore year at the University of Texas at Dallas. His imagination, his work ethic, and his de-sire to help people is why we will certainly hear more from Aaron in the coming years.

While at Bishop Montgomery, Dotson proved to be an all-around student

who excelled both in and out of the classroom. He played the piano for

both Music Ministry and in talent shows; he acted in several Drama Lab

productions; he won several public speaking awards through the Lions

Club of America; and he was named Homecoming King during his senior

year. Oh, and he did all this while carrying a GPA of 3.92 and graduating

Summa Cum Laude.

Dotson’s first year and a half at UT Dallas has been much like his days at

Bishop Montgomery - busy. He is a neuroscience major on the Pre-Med

track and he is minoring in music with a concentration in classical piano.

When not in class or studying, he works as a Peer Lear Team Learning

leader for General Chemistry 1. “I am basically a chemistry tutor for two

sections of eight students,” explains Dotson. “I absolutely love my job and

love teaching students.” Dotson has also found time this year to serve as

the Academic Advancement committee chairperson of his campus’ Black

Student Alliance where he organizes weekly study halls and notifies

members of scholarship and internship opportunities. Additionally, he

finds time to volunteer at various campus events.

This past June and July, Dotson was presented an opportunity to attend

the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) at the

Yale University School of Medicine. He was one of 80 undergraduates in

the program and he received invaluable experience. At the six-week long,

all-expenses paid program, Dotson spent time shadowing doctors at the

Yale New Haven Hospital, attended career development seminars, par-

ticipated in writing workshops, and had the opportunity to take Organic

Chemistry and Research Biology classes. “Participating in SMDEP really

showed me that I want to become a doctor more than anything else in the

world,” explains Dotson.

One of the biggest advantages of attending the program at Yale this sum-

mer was the networking opportunities. Dotson not only worked closely

with Yale’s faculty and medical students, but he made lifelong friends

with other students whom he expects to cross paths with profession-

ally in the future. “Because of SMDEP, I had the opportunity to network

with several prestigious medical schools around the country that I plan

to apply to in the future,” Dotson explained in an article about him in UT

Dallas’ school newspaper.

Upon his return to the UT Dallas campus following his trip to Yale, Dot-

son made it one of his priorities to spend more time working in research

labs for the remainder of his undergraduate career. “While in the pro-

gram... I found myself to be quite interested in learning more about re-

search,” he explains. Dotson also made it his goal to raise his GPA from a

3.78 so that he can become eligible to be part of the Phi Kappa Phi’s honor

society. (Note: he made the Dean’s List this past Fall with a 4.0 GPA).

Other accomplishments have come Dotson’s way since the start of the

current school year. He accepted an invitation to be part of the Golden

Key International Honor Society for his place in the top 15% of his class

at UT Dallas. He also received the UT Dallas Presidential Achievement

Scholarship in the amount of $6,000 for his academic excellence.

“Looking back over my college career thus far, I know that I have God

and Bishop Montgomery to thank for my achievements,” wrote Dotson

in an email to BMHS Spanish teacher Laura Fabbri. “Bishop truly has

prepared me for what to expect in college. It is because of the excellent

teachers/mentors... as to why I am successful today.”

With clear goals, a strong work ethic, and a desire to be successful, Dot-

son will surely continue to acheive all that he wants. “Medical school is

coming up soon and I want to make sure I am the most qualified applicant

that I can possibly be,” he explains. “I dream of attending an Ivy League

medical school and I know I can if I continue to work hard in college.”

Class of 2012 Honored

On Friday, September 14, 2012, Bishop Montgomery inducted the

newest class into the Athletic Hall of Fame, marking the sec-

ond year of Hall of Fame honors. The newest class represents

a unique cross section of athletes and eras in Bishop Montgomery’s out-

standing tradition of athletic excellence. Athletes from the 1960’s, 1970’s,

and 1980’s make up this class that represent nine different sports. “Bishop

Montgomery has produced so many fine student-athletes, and continues

to do so today,” explained Athletic Director and alumnus Kareem Mutrie

‘94. “Learning about the accomplishments of these great people, and get-

ting the chance to meet them, has been special.”

Prior to the Knights' football game against North Torrance, during a cer-

emony in the gymnasium, banners honoring the inductees were unveiled

and the honorees spoke to a crowd of family, friends, and guests, including

members of the inaugural class who came back to enjoy the festivities. At

halftime, the honorees were recognized at mid-field and presented with

their awards. “The best part is having the honorees back on campus so

that the whole community can recognize them for their accomplishments

and for representing BMHS with class and dignity,” explained Mutrie.

from Long Beach State in 1971 with

a degree in physical education and

also received her teaching credential.

In 1970, Schnell was a member of the

U.S.A. softball team that won a silver

medal at the Women’s World Cham-

pionships in Osaka, Japan and she has

traveled all over the world represent-

ing U.S.A. softball. After college, she

played professional softball for the

Orange Lionettes of the Pacific Coast

Women’s Softball League, and the Southern California Gems of the Wom-

en’s Professional Softball League. She was a teacher, coach, department

chairperson, and athletic director for 37 years at the secondary level in

Orange County schools before retiring.

campus and then dinner. The program followed and the memories began

to flow. Sr. Carol Louise Smith ‘62 started things off with a pop quiz

for her classmates. After that, BMHS alumna (and current parent) Ann

Ramirez ‘87 spoke to the class about today’s BMHS student. Finally, re-

union commitee chairperson Marvey Chapman-Mueller ‘62 put together

a memorial tribute to lost classmates as well as slideshows about events

and memories of the class. “It was an honor working with the commit-

tee and meeting all the class members,” stated Marafino. “It was truly a

special night for everyone.”

Homecoming is always a special time on campus at Bishop Mont-

gomery, but this year was made all the more special with the Class

of 1962’s 50th reunion on campus. Over 80 members of the class returned

to BMHS on Saturday, October 20th for a night of food, fun, and friends.

For many in the class, the reunion was the first time back on campus in

years. And for every member of the class, coming to the gymnasium for

the reunion was a first, as the gym was built after they had graduated

from BMHS. “Having the Class of 1962 back on campus was very spe-

cial,” explained BMHS Director of Marketing Andy Marafino. “Having

the alumni back is always a treat, but when it is a class celebrating their

50th reunion, it is even more special.”

Mission StatementThe mission of Bishop Montgomery High School is to provide quality Catho-lic education primarily to college bound students of varied academic abilities from the South Bay area.

We serve the needs of the Church and the larger community by providing in-tellectually mature persons who have learned to integrate world knowledge with Catholic beliefs and values.

Our mission is accomplished through the cooperative efforts of parents, stu-dents, and staff by providing a rigorous curriculum and a positive discipline program that challenges all students to reach their potential.

The mission is realized in a community that nourishes the faith life of the par-ents, students, and staff through prayer, worship, and service to others.

The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, racial or ethnic origin in administration or its education policies, admission policies, scholar-ships and loan program, and athletic or other school administered programs.

Endowed and Annual ScholarshipsIn the past fifteen years, the scholarship program at Bishop Montgomery High School has grown from one scholarship to over twenty-five. The tremendous growth of the program is due in large part because of the generosity of so many parents, alumni and friends who have chosen to create a lasting gift to BMHS. Endowed and annual scholarship funds are essential to ensuring an economically diverse school community, and are a critical component in BMHS’ tradi-tion of supporting financially needy students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend our school.

On Sunday, December 16, two Bishop Montgomery students, se-nior Daniel Snearl '13 and junior Amanda Cazarez '14, gradu-

ated from the Los Angeles Police Department Cadet Program at a ceremony held at USC's Galen Center. The cadet program is an 18-

week long program in which students study law enforcement and learn the val-ues of integrity and teamwork through classroom work and physical fitness. To complete the program, cadets must pass a written final exam as well as a physical fitness test.

Congratulations to Daniel and Amanda for all of their hard work and for their commitment to serving the community.

Cazarez, a junior, completed her cadet training through the program in Culver City. Like Snearl, she plans to study criminal justice at a college close to home and her ultimate goal is to work for the FBI.

Snearl, a senior, is a member of the in-augural cadet program through the Los Angeles Airport Police Department. He

plans on studying criminal justice in college (San Jose State Univer-sity is his top choice), and he hopes to one day become a police offi-cer or work for the FBI. "I really enjoy investigative work," explained Snearl when asked why he was in the cadet program.

Although she has graduated from the cadet program, Cazarez plans to stay in the pro-gram to gain more experience and learn more about law enforcement. "You can stay in the program until you are 20 [years old], which I plan to do," she explains.

Burger King Next to BMHS Closes

In early December, an institution closely

associated with Bishop Montgomery shut

down when the Burger King adjacent to

campus closed to make way for a Wendy’s

franchise. The Burger King, which had been

there for 43 years, was a popular hangout for

BMHS students as well as visiting teams and fans. “Bishop Mont-

BMHS Senior’s Eagle Scout Status Opens Doors of Opportunity

ABOVE: Senior Diallo Whitaker ‘13 (left) appears on the Jan-uary/February 2013 issue of Scouting Magazine.

When senior Diallo Whitaker ‘13 became an Eagle Scout in May 2012 it opened up oppor-

tunities for him to explore the world around him. Whitaker earned his Eagle Scout badge by

drawing plans for and building a new wooden canopy for the L.A. County Animal Shelter in

Carson. In January, Whitaker traveled to Washington, D.C. for President Obama’s inaugu-

ration after being selected as one of 35 students invited to attend the event.

This Spring, Whitaker will appear in National Geographic Channel’s series Are You Tougher

Than a Boy Scout? In the series, Whitaker and other Eagle Scouts compete against adults in a

series of competitions like white-water rafting, rappelling, and rock climbing. “The adults

are either ex-military or former boy scouts who did not earn Eagle Scout badges,” explains

Whitaker. “It was a lot of fun.” The series was filmed in Sequioa National Park this past June

and will air sometime in the spring. For more information, visit http://digital.scouting.org/

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

The boys’ cross country team, coached by Martin Haynes ‘94 and Brian

Haynes ‘89, had a solid season in 2012. The team finished 3rd overall

in the Camino Real League and several

runners turned in solid performances.

Senior Andrew Blair ‘13 (pictured) was

the Knights’ top finisher at league fi-

nals, finishing 11th (18:27.2). Sophomore

Jimmy Grove ‘15 finished 12th at league

finals (18:28.4) and was a top sopho-

more at the South Bay Cup, finishing

16th (17:36.96). Senior Michael Hadley

‘13 finished 13th at league finals (18:31.1)

and senior Robert Sonoda ‘13 finished

14th in a time of 18:40.0.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

The girls’ cross country team, under the direction of head coach Amy

Meehan ‘89, had a solid season as a team, finishing 4th in the Del Rey

League. Although the team did not qualify for CIF Prelims, one individu-

al became the most decorated

female cross country runner in

school history. Senior Dani-

elle Shanahan ‘13 was the

Del Rey League’s Most Valu-

able Runner, finishing first in

league finals. This, however,

was just the start of her ac-

complishments. After win-

ning her heat at the CIF-SS

Division IV prelims, Shanahan

moved on to the CIF Finals at

Mt. SAC where she finished

first in a time of 16:41 to be-

come the first cross country

CIF champion in school his-

tory. With her victory, Sha-

nahan qualified for the Cali-

fornia State Championships held at Woodward Park in Fresno. It was

Shanahan’s third trip to the state finals, but it proved to be her most

successful trip. Despite rainy and muddy conditions, Shanahan finished

second in a time of 18:12 on the 3.1 mile course. Her 2nd place finish is

the highest a Bishop Montgomery runner has placed at the state finals.

In early December, Shanahan ran at the Foot Locker West Region Cross

Country Championships held at Mt. SAC. She finished 13th in a time

The Knights’ resurgence continued in 2012 under third-year head coach

Ed Hodgkiss. Football (7-3 overall, 4-1 in the Del Rey League) qualified

for the CIF-SS playoffs for the 3rd year in a row, the first time in school

history the program has made three straight postseason appearances.

The Knights cruised through their non-league schedule with the only

loss coming to North Torrance. One of the highlights of the non-league

portion of the schedule was the Knights’ thrilling 24-16 win at Contre-

ras High School. With just over

2 minutes to play and trailing

16-14, senior kicker Jonathan

Kim ‘13 nailed a 52-yard field

goal to put the Knights ahead

17-16. The Knights tacked on a

late score to win 24-16. For Kim,

his kick tied the school record

for longest field goal (Tommy

Truhe ‘95 kicked a 52-yarder in

1994). Kim, who is expected to

play next year at Army, capped

a brilliant career for the Knights.

He was named 1st Team All-Del

Rey League for the third straight year and is believed to be the only foot-

ball player in school history to be named All League all four years (he

was a 2nd team selection as a freshman).

pearance at the west region championships, Shanahan capped off her

cross country season by making a verbal commitment to run at Loyola

country.

Fall Athletics Teams Have Great SuccessSix fall sports teams produce five Del Rey League MVP’s

The Knights’ opened Del Rey league play by scoring over 30 points in

three straight wins. The league opener at Mary Star, the Knights turned

in a dominating 38-0 performance. The defense held the Stars to 92 yards

of total offense in the game. Following wins against Cantwell-Sacred

Heart and Bosco Tech, the Knights met up with La Salle for a shot at the

league title. On a beautiful Homecoming night, the Knights played well,

but came up short, losing to La Salle 29-10. The Knights finished up their

regular season in style, beating Verbum Dei 42-6 to secure 2nd place in

league. In the playoffs, the Knights battled hard, but lost in the opening

round to Village Christian, 38-21.

Offensively, the Knights were led by the running of senior Michael

Turner ‘13 and junior Robbie Hou ‘14, both of whom were named 1st

Team All-Del Rey League. Hou stepped in early in the opening game of

the year when Turner suffered an ankle injury that kept him out until

league play. When Turner returned to action, the Knights proved to

Page 25: Veritas Magazine Fall/Winter 2012-13

On defense, the young Knights squad

turned in a very good season, surren-

dering only 211 points. The Knights

were led by the inspired effort of se-

nior nose tackle Kyle Kutler ‘13, a

1st Team All-Del Rey pick who often

times played banged-up, bruised, and

injured. Behind Kutler was a lineback-

ing unit made up almost entirely of

sophomores. Leading the way was

1st Team All-Del Rey League selection Jarett Balter ‘15. The defensive

backfield was also a relatively young unit for the Knights. Senior Cam-

eron Hughes ‘13 and junior Devin Johnson ‘14 led the unit and both

were named to the All-Del Rey League 2nd Team.

GIRLS’ GOLFThe girls’ golf team, coached by Ed

Miranda, got even younger in 2012,

but younger definitely meant better for

the team. Leading the way for the Lady

Knights was freshman Anna Leoncio ‘16

(pictured). Leoncio made her presence

felt right away, claiming the Del Rey

League individual title and MVP award.

At the league finals, she shot a 75 at El

Dorado GC in Long Beach to claim the

title. With her win, Leoncio qualified for

the CIF-SS Northern Division Individual

Regionals at River Ridge GC in Oxnard.

Leoncio shot an impressive 80, missing

the cut by only 2 shots. Junior Celeste Porche ‘14 also turned in a solid

season and was named to the All-Del Rey League 2nd Team.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Girls’ tennis (8-5) won their seventh straight Del Rey League team title

with a perfect 8-0 record in league. Under the guidance of first year head

coach Dan Wooten, the Lady Knights qualified for the CIF-SS Division

IV playoffs, but lost in the first round to Cajon 10-8 in a hard fought

match. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was the doubles team of

senior Megan Duffy ‘13 and sophomore Danielle Faith ‘15 (pictured).

The duo not only captured the Del Rey League Doubles title, but they

advanced to the CIF-SS Divsion IV individual tournament with their

showing at league finals. After waiting for the CIF team playoffs to fin-

ish, Duffy and Faith competed at the CIF Individual tournament where

The girls’ volleyball team (22-14) qualified for the CIF playoffs for the

31st consecutive year in the program’s illustrious history under second-

year head coach Kevin Norman. Looking to prove themselves worthy of

the program’s history, the 2012 squad had an inspiring journey through

the tough CIF-SS Division 1A playoffs. Despite finishing third in the Del

Rey League, the Lady Knights made a run in the playoffs by upsetting

several seeded teams along the way. A big reason for the team’s resur-

gence was the return from injury of junior middle blocker Ashley Mur-

ray ‘14, who missed most of the season with a stress fracture in her leg.

BMHS opened the playoffs by sweeping both Estancia and Thousand

Oaks in straight sets. In the quarter-finals, the Lady Knights had little

trouble with Anaheim Canyon to set up a showdown with league rival

and the division’s top seed in La Salle. Before a packed gym at BMHS, the

Lady Knights found themselves in a 2-games-to-1 deficit heading to the

4th set where they quickly fell behind 7-0. However, the Lady Knights

battled all the way back to win the set and force a deciding 5th game.

Once again, the Lady Knights fell behind early, 10-3, only to fight back to

get to 13-11. Unfortunately, the magic ended and they lost 22-25, 25-18,

25-21, 16-25, 15-12. All

season long, the Lady

Knights were led by

University of Alabama-

signee Bria Green ‘13

(pictured), who was the

Del Rey League MVP

and a 1st Team All-CIF

selection. Green led the

team in almost every

hitting category. Junior

Aisha King ‘14 joined

Green on the All-Del

the running game, of course, belongs to the offensive line, and no one had

a better year than senior tackle Andrew Reimer ‘13 (pictured #72), who

We would like to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” to all the

members of our community who made a financial gift to the school.

Without the support of you - our current and past parents, faculty

and staff, alumni, and friends - we would not be able to provide all

the great things we are able to offer the students of Bishop Mont-

gomery. Our current students are blessed to have a wonderful com-

munity who supports them in their desire to become young men and

women of whom we can all be proud.

Gratefully,

Andy Marafino

Director of Marketing & Public Relations

FALL/WINTER 2012-13 • 27 www.bmhs-la.org

The current school year has been one of the more exciting years in

recent memory. It seems that every time I open my email, I am getting

news of a current student or alumnus who is doing something great

and newsworthy. We are never at a loss for stories for the magazine,

the website or our BMHS Face-

book and Twitter pages.

Over the course of the next couple of months there was never a dull

moment at BMHS. Our outstanding BMHS Band competed in several

competitions around southern California and took their talents to

some of our local Catholic partner schools; we hosted “Junior High

Nights” at both a football game and a boys’ & girls’ basketball dou-

bleheader; our sports teams had a fantastic fall season as BMHS pro-

duced five league MVP’s in the six fall sports; senior cross country

runner Danielle Shanahan ‘13 won a CIF title and then went up to

Fresno and finished 2nd in the State!; and our seniors are starting to

hear from the colleges where they applied (to great success, I might

add!). There will be a crop of new BMHS alumni all over the country

next year doing great things in college.

These are, of course, just a few of the highlights so far this year; it

has been busy, but exciting, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Our students are proud to be here and proud to be a part of this great

community. We thank you - parents, alumni, friends - for being a

part of what makes Bishop Montgomery great - the people!

In September, we welcomed back

many alumni who have represent-

ed Bishop Montgomery both local-

ly, nationally, and internationally.

On September 5 at the Welcome

Mass, we honored two alumni po-

lice officers, Vince Osorio ‘87 and

Hugo Gualotuna ‘90, for their role

in rescuing students after a shoot-

ing at Gardena High School. Sever-

al other alumni police officers, including LAPD Chaplain Rev. Mike

McCullough ‘64 came back to help celebrate these two brave offi-

cers. On September 11, BMHS held “Carmelita Jeter Day” on campus.

We welcomed back United States Olympic Gold Medalist Carmelita

Jeter ‘98 (pictured with BMHS’ ASB officers) at a pep rally to honor

her for her accomplishments at the London Olympics. Our students,

faculty, and many alumni spent a special day with this special person.

Just a few days later, we inducted our newest class into the BMHS

Athletic Hall of Fame (see pages 10-11). It was so great to have our

honorees back and for our community to recognize these former stu-

dent-athletes who have always represented their Alma Mater with

class and dignity. What is amazing is that all three of these events

happened in the span of nine days - an exciting nine days!

Most recently, the BMHS boys’ basketball team has made nation-

al headlines on the court. Longtime

coach Doug Mitchell won his 500th

game at BMHS (previous page) to

open the season and, at the time of

this writing, the team is ranked in the

top-15 in the nation according to both

MaxPreps and USA Today. The remain-

der of the season is sure to be exciting

as the Knights look to capture both a

CIF and a State title. We also recently

learned that one of our own, alumnus

David Roberts ‘90, is running for Los

Angeles City Council, and alumnus

Rich Moore ‘83 has retired after serving our country for 27 years as a

SEAL in the United States Navy (page 28)!

Ways to Give Back to Your Alma Mater

Alumnus “Living” The Christmas Spirit

In an effort to build his company’s profile, Martin appeared on the December 4th episode of ABC's Shark Tank in an effort to secure an investment from the "Sharks" on the show. On Shark Tank, “contestants” pitch their product or business to a group of investors in hopes of forming a partnership. On the episode, Martin initially asked for a $150,000 in-vestment for a 30% stake in his company. Despite most of the investors declining to take part in Martin’s business, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was the one “shark” who decided to form a partnership with Martin. In the end, Cuban gave The Living Christmas Company the $150,000 for a 40% stake. “We were able to present the company as a benefit company,” explains Martin. “Mark [Cuban] saw value in what we were doing.”

For more information about Martin and his company, visit www.livingchristmas.com.

Through Martin's company, cus-tomers rent live Christmas trees, which are delivered directly to the home. “We think that having a tree that is living says something more about Christmas,” explains Martin. Following the holidays, the trees are picked up and returned to his nursery, where they continue to grow for rental (perhaps by the same family) the follow-ing year. “One of our goals is to have people value a living thing as an asset.”

BMHS alumnus Scott Martin '97 not only believes in the Christmas spirit, he lives it everyday. In fact, he is on a mission to bring that same spirit to as many people as possible through his company, The Living Christmas Company in Redondo Beach.

One of the best things about Martin’s appearance on the show is that Cuban has already funded the company as promised, something that does not typically happen after the show airs. “Mark has been really patient and cool about everything,” adds Martin. “Ben-efit companies typically do not do well on the show.”

2005 MICAH HORWOOD, US Army, re-

cently returned from a year-long tour of duty in

Afghanistan. He is stationed in Georgia. JOSH-UA JONES has been hired as the defensive backs

coach at Arkansas Tech University. Your gift to BMHS goes a long way to enhancing our campus and our programs. There are several ways you can give back to BMHS and all gifts are tax-deductible.
