The Indicative MOOD
• We’re starting with the indicative. The vast majority of sentences you use are in this MOOD.
• We will review how to form the past, present and future• Plus how to make sentences with modal verbs (tag team verbs)• And how to create sentences with subordinating conjunctions (Verb Kickers)
Verbs Can Be So Moody…• Verbs have Tenses -‐ past, present and future
• But they also have moods –
• Indicative – expresses a “real” situation in the past, present or future• Imperative – expresses an order or a request• Subjunctive – expresses wishes, probabilities or conditions which are contrary to fact*
• This can also be in the past, present or future
• *We will mostly be working with the “conditional” form of the Subjunctive mood – talking about conditions which are contrary to fact

It is common to hear the SIMPLE PAST forms of some verbs in conversation:hatten waren gaben wurden wusstedachten sagten and ALL TAG TEAM Verbs

Note -‐ Germans will usually use the present tense for actions in the near future if is stated when the actions will happen. If no time is indicated, then the future tense must be used.

The Imperative MOOD
• This is the type of sentence you use when you are commanding someone, making an order or request.
• This Mood is only expressed in the present tense
• There are 4 ways to form an imperative sentence• Du commands• Ihr commands• Sie commands• Wir commands
Du Commands – How to form the verb
• Kauf den Zucker im Supermarkt!
1. Find the Du form of the verb and remove the “st”• kaufst -‐• holst -‐• siehst• fährst
Notice with irregular verbs, you need to use the irregular form if it has an e/i change in the du form

This is like saying “Lets buy the sugar in the supermarket!
The Subjunctive MOOD
• This is used to expres wishes, probabilities and conditions that are contrary to fact.
• It can be used in the past, present or future
• We will mostly focus on the “conditional” formulation of the subjunctive, which focuses on conditions that are contrary to fact
• There is another, less common, form of the subjunctive mood which you will learn in college someday or not at all , because you will probably never work for a German newspaper. But who knows, I could be totally wrong about that.

• Most verbs can use the following structure
